Abstract Background To evaluate the changes of retinal and choroidal microvascular including the superficial retinal capillary plexus (SCP), deep retinal capillary plexus (DCP), choriocapillaris (CC), and central retinal thickness (CRT) in high myopic eyes after the implantable collamer lens with a central hole (ICL V4c) implantation using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods This retrospective study included 30 eyes of 30 patients (14 males and 16 females) who underwent ICL V4c implantation in Tianjin Aier Eye Hospital from October 2022 to May 2023. Uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), spherical equivalent (SE), axial length (AL), and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) were measured and assessed before surgery, and 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery. OCTA was used to image and measure several key indicators: the foveal avascular zone (FAZ), vascular density (VD) of the SCP and DCP, blood flow density (BD) of the CC, and CRT. All measurement data were obtained utilizing the instrument’s proprietary software, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Results UDVA were significant improvements at the 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after ICL V4c implantation surgery. BDVA, FAZ, and CRT maintained stable, however, IOP was higher at 1 week and 3 months post-operation compared to 1-month post-operation. The statistically significant difference was identified within the S3, S7, and S9 of SCP at each time point before and after the surgery (P 1 = 0.004; P 2 = 0.014; P 3 = 0.037). However, paired analyses showed that there was a significant decrease in VD of S3 at 1 week after ICL V4c implantation surgery (P 0.05), and the increase in VD of the S7 region at 1 month after ICL V4c implantation, which is significant compared to 1 week post-surgery, but not compared to preoperative levels. An overall comparison of the BD of the CC (2 mm) at each time point showed a statistically significant difference (P = 0.029). Conclusion ICL V4c implantation offers a safe and efficient therapy to the high myopic patients. However, the retinal and choroidal microvascular changes need to be paid attention to in post-ICL implantation patients.

Abstract Background 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) recently received much attention due to its potential application in many fields such as medicine, nutrition and agriculture. Metabolic engineering is an efficient strategy to improve microbial production of 5-ALA. Results In this study, an ALA production strain of Escherichia coli was constructed by rational metabolic engineering and stepwise improvement. A metabolic strategy to produce ALA directly from glucose in this recombinant E. coli via both C4 and C5 pathways was applied herein. The expression of a modified hemA RS gene and rational metabolic engineering by gene knockouts significantly improved ALA production from 765.9 to 2056.1 mg/L. Next, we tried to improve ALA production by RGMS-directed evolution of eamA gene. After RGMS, the ALA yield of strain A2-ASK reached 2471.3 mg/L in flask. Then, we aimed to improve the oxidation resistance of cells by overexpressing sodB and katE genes and ALA yield reached 2703.8 mg/L. A final attempt is to replace original promoter of hemB gene in genome with a weaker one to decrease its expression. After 24 h cultivation, a high ALA yield of 19.02 g/L was achieved by 108-ASK in a 5 L fermenter. Conclusions These results suggested that an industrially competitive strain can be efficiently developed by metabolic engineering based on combined rational modification and optimization of gene expression.

AIM: To analysis of research hotspots and trends on the application of premium intraocular lens (PIOLs) in the past 2 decades. METHODS: The literature search was performed on the Web of Science and included PIOLs studies published between January 2000 and December 2022. The retrieved literature was collated and analyzed by R-tool's Bibliometrix package, CitNetExplorer, CiteSpace and other software. RESULTS: A total of 1801 articles about PIOLs were obtained, most of which were published in Spain and the United States. The organization that published the most articles was the University of Valencia in Spain. Alió JL, and Montés-Micó R, from Spain were the most influential authors in this field. The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Journal of Refractive Surgery were the core journals for this field; the top 10 cited articles mainly focus on postoperative satisfaction with multifocal intraocular lens (IOLs) and postoperative results of toric IOLs. Through the keyword analysis, we found that trifocal IOLs, astigmatism and extended depth of focus (EDoF) IOLs are the most discussed topics at present, and the importance of astigmatism and the clinical application of the new generation of PIOLs are the emerging research trends. CONCLUSION: Bibliometric analysis can effectively help to identify multilevel concerns in PIOLs research and the prevailing research trends in the realm of PIOLs encompass the adoption of EDoF IOLs, trifocal IOLs, and their respective Toric models.

Benefits from the powerful local modeling capability of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), remote-sensing image change detection (CD) has made significant progress. In recent years, the rise of transformers has further driven improvements in global feature extraction for bitemporal remote-sensing images. Some prior efforts have tried to integrate CNN and transformer, but they suffer from the limitation of inefficiently aggregating local features and contextual information. Besides, they struggle to refine change boundaries and exhibit inferior performance in detecting multiscale and subtle changes. To tackle these interrelated problems, we propose a difference-enhanced pyramid pooling dynamic sparse attention network (DPDANet) for CD, which integrates the potential of CNN and pyramid pooling dynamic sparse attention (PDSA) mechanism. Specifically, a pretrained EfficientNetV2-S network is first used to extract multilevel local fine-grained features. Then, a global semantic enhancement network based on well-designed PDSA mechanism is proposed to extract rich global contextual information. The proposed difference enhancement module combines long short-term memory and deformable convolution to emphasize relevant and irrelevant changes, capturing precise boundary details of the changing region. A decoder is then employed for step-by-step upsampling of encoded features, with skip connections between local multiscale features and globally enhanced features. Expensive experiments on four public CD datasets demonstrate that DPDANet outperforms state-of-the-art methods by reducing missed detections and false detections and achieving more accurate boundaries of the changing area.

Bartter syndrome (BS, OMIM #601678) is a rare inherited salt-losing tubulopathy characterized by hypokalemia metabolic alkalosis with secondary renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation. As reported, BS type 1 is generally presented prenatal and neonatal period, and symptoms usually appear before and after birth or in infancy, accompanied by severe salt loss, whilst kidney function remains mostly normal. In this study, we report a case of BS type 1 with childhood onset and proteinuria and renal impairment. The child was born preterm due to hyperamniotic fluid, but there were no apparent symptoms after birth until the age of 3 when the child began to present with polydipsia, polyuria and increased nocturnal uria. At the age of 5, she had elevated serum creatinine level and proteinuria. After admission, she was diagnosed with chronic tubulointerstitial disease and stage 2 chronic kidney disease(CKD). According to the chloride clearance test, the abnormal function of medullary thick ascending limb Henle′s loop, was confirmed and BS type 1 was diagnosed by gene sequencing. After active management of complications, kidney function of the child improved. In the long-term follow-up, the urinary protein amount of the child still increased, eGFR slowly decreased, and the child was currently in the CKD2 stage. Children with prenatal BS may not present typical clinical manifestations immediately after birth until the onset of relevant clinical symptoms in childhood. BS type 1 patients may have renal impairment, which needs to be identified in time. Clinical differentiation diagnosis between BS and Gitelman syndrome can be made by chloride clearance tests. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to improve prognosis.

The nonlinear mechanical properties of ballasted tracks along railways result in complex dynamics of the vehicle–track systems. Employing localized characterization of ballast and a simplified model might underestimate the vehicle–track system’s dynamical responses and safety. This paper presents a new dynamical stiffness model of railway ballast by incorporating the ballast’s time-varying, nonlinear viscoelastic, and elastoplastic properties. The new nonlinear stiffness model is a versatile tool that comprehensively characterizes the ballast characteristics of displacement-dependent stiffness, frequency-dependent stiffness, hysteresis, and time/space-varying features. These features, widely reported in previous experimental research, can now be effectively understood. Conventionally, to characterize time/space-varying characteristics of ballast along the track, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been used as the most efficient approach to survey railway networks quickly and to infer track dynamical properties. Aiming to improve the present technique for characterizing time/space-varying properties of ballast stiffness by using a GPR signal, the adaptive optimal kernel time–frequency representation (AOKTFR) method is used to process a typical GPR signal from a railway ballast scanning. It is found that the results of AOKTFR exhibit a clear time-varying pattern and precise frequency modulation. In contrast, the conventional time–frequency methods failed to give a clear time-varying pattern. The results illustrate that AOKTFR is a practical approach for processing the time-varying nonlinear signal of GPR and correlating it with the time-varying nonlinear stiffness of ballast.

We propose a compound control framework to improve the path tracking accuracy of a four-wheel independent steering and driving (4WISD) vehicle in complex environments. The framework consists of a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based auxiliary controller and a dual-layer controller. Samples in the 4WISD vehicle control framework have the issues of skewness and sparsity, which makes it difficult for the DRL to converge. We propose a group intelligent experience replay (GER) mechanism that non-dominantly sorts the samples in the experience buffer, which facilitates within-group and between-group collaboration to achieve a balance between exploration and exploitation. To address the generalization problem in the complex nonlinear dynamics of 4WISD vehicles, we propose an actor-critic architecture based on the method of two-stream information bottleneck (TIB). The TIB method is used to remove redundant information and extract high-dimensional features from the samples, thereby reducing generalization errors. To alleviate the overfitting of DRL to known data caused by IB, the reverse information bottleneck (RIB) alters the optimization objective of IB, preserving the discriminative features that are highly correlated with actions and improving the generalization ability of DRL. The proposed method significantly improves the convergence and generalization capabilities of DRL, while effectively enhancing the path tracking accuracy of 4WISD vehicles in high-speed, large-curvature, and complex environments.

Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the main diseases that causes blindness in humans, and the number of cases is increasing yearly. However, effective treatments are unavailable, and arbutin (ARB) has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects in other age-related diseases. However, whether ARB can be used to treat dry AMD remains unknown. To explore the therapeutic potential and molecular mechanism of arbutin in the treatment of dry AMD. MTT assays, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production assays, flow cytometry assays, qPCR and western blotting were used to assess the impact of ARB on human RPECs induced by H2O2. A transcriptome sequencing assay was used to further explore how ARB acts on human RPECs treated with H2O2. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) assays were used to observe the impact of ARB on mouse retina induced by sodium iodate. ARB counteracted the H2O2-induced reduction in human RPECs viability, ARB reversed H2O2-induced cellular ROS production by increasing the expression of antioxidant-related genes and proteins, ARB also reversed H2O2-induced cell apoptosis by altering the expression of apoptosis-related genes and proteins. Transcriptome sequencing and western blotting showed that ARB reduced ERK1/2 and P-38 phosphorylation to prevent H2O2-induced oxidation damage. The in vivo experiments demonstrated that ARB protected against retinal morphology injury in mice, increased serum T-AOC levels and increased antioxidant oxidase gene expression levels in the mouse retina induced by sodium iodate. We concluded that ARB reversed the H2O2-induced decrease in human RPECs viability through the inhibition of ROS production and apoptosis. The ERK1/2 and P38 MAPK signaling pathways may mediate this process. ARB maintained retinal morphology, increased serum T-AOC level and improved the expression of antioxidant oxidase genes in mice.

Abstract As of 2021, over 2.8 million small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedures have been performed in China. However, knowledge regarding the selection of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formula for post-SMILE cataract patients remains limited. This study included 52 eyes of 26 myopic patients from northern China who underwent SMILE at Tianjin Eye Hospital from September 2022 to February 2023 to investigate the suitability of multiple IOL calculation formulas in post-SMILE patients using a theoretical surgical model. We compared the postoperative results obtained from three artificial intelligence (AI)-based formulas and six conventional formulas provided by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). These formulas were applied to calculate IOL power using both total keratometry (TK) and keratometry (K) values, and the results were compared to the preoperative results obtained from the Barrett Universal II (BUII) formula for the SMILE patients. Among the evaluated formulas, the results obtained from the Emmetropia Verifying Optical 2.0 Formula with TK (EVO-TK) (0.40 ± 0.29 D, range 0–1.23 D), Barrett True K with K formula (BTK-K, 0.41 ± 0.26 D, range 0.01–1.19 D), and Masket with K formula (Masket-K, 0.44 ± 0.33 D, range 0.02–1.39 D) demonstrated the closest proximity to BUII. Abstract Background As the two most prevalent refractive surgeries in China, there is a substantial number of patients who have undergone Femtosecond Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) procedures. However, there is still limited knowledge regarding the selection of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas for these patients with a history of FS-LASIK or SMILE. Methods A total of 100 eyes from 50 postoperative refractive surgery patients were included in this prospective cohort study, with 25 individuals (50 eyes) having undergone FS-LASIK and 25 individuals (50 eyes) having undergone SMILE. We utilized a theoretical surgical model to simulate the IOL implantation process in postoperative FS-LASIK and SMILE patients. Subsequently, we performed comprehensive biological measurements both before and after the surgeries, encompassing demographic information, corneal biometric parameters, and axial length. Various formulas, including the Barrett Universal II (BUII) formula, as a baseline, were employed to calculate IOL power for the patients. Results The Barrett True K (BTK) formula, demonstrated an mean absolute error (AE) within 0.5 D for both FS-LASIK and SMILE groups (0.28 ± 0.25 D and 0.36 ± 0.24 D, respectively). Notably, the FS-LASIK group showed 82% of results differing by less than 0.25 D compared to preoperative BUII results. The Barrett True K No History (BTKNH) formula, which also incorporates measured posterior corneal curvature, performed similarly to BTK in both groups. Additionally, the Masket formula, relying on refractive changes based on empirical experience, displayed promising potential for IOL calculations in SMILE patients compared with BTK (p = 0.411). Conclusion The study reveals the accuracy and stability of the BTK and BTKNH formulas for IOL power calculations in myopic FS-LASIK/SMILE patients. Moreover, the Masket formula shows encouraging results in SMILE patients. These findings contribute to enhancing the predictability and success of IOL power calculations in patients with a history of refractive surgery, providing valuable insights for clinical practice. Further research and larger sample sizes are warranted to validate and optimize the identified formulas for better patient outcomes.

Summary: Objective: The aim of this study was to compare perioperative outcomes of patients with low rectal cancer after stoma-site approach single-port laparoscopic Miles procedure or conventional multi-port laparoscopic Miles procedure, as well as to evaluate the safety and efficacy of stoma-site approach single-port laparoscopic surgery in low rectal cancer. Methods: Between September 2020 and September 2021, 51 low rectal cancer patients scheduled for Miles procedure at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College were randomly assigned to the single-port laparoscopic surgery group (SPLS) and the multi-port laparoscopic surgery (MPLS) group. The perioperative outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: In this study, 25 patients underwent SPLS and 26 underwent MPLS. All patients completed the study, and there were no perioperative deaths in either group. Observation indicators such as intraoperative bleeding (39 mL vs. 41 mL), number of lymph nodes (20.12 ± 3.29 vs. 21.84 ± 3.74), average hospital stay (7.15 ± 1.52 vs. 7.64 ± 1.66), and time to flatulence (2.5d vs. 2.5d) showed no significant differences between the SPLS and MPLS groups (p > 0.05). Abstract Background Arginase-1 (ARG1) promotes collagen synthesis and cell proliferation. ARG1 is highly expressed in various tumour cells. The mechanisms of ARG1 in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated cataracts were studied herein. Methods C57BL/6 mice, a human lens epithelial cell line (HLEC-SRA01/04), and human lens capsule samples were used in this study. The right lens anterior capsule of the mouse eye was punctured through the central cornea with a 26-gauge hypodermic needle. Human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) were transfected with ARG1-targeted (siARG1) or negative control siRNA (siNC). For gene overexpression, HLECs were transfected with a plasmid bearing the ARG1 coding sequence or an empty vector. Medium containing 0.2% serum with or without transforming growth factor beta-2 (TGF-β2) was added for 6 or 24 h to detect mRNA or protein, respectively. The expression of related genes was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT–qPCR), western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining. Transwell assays and wound healing assays were used to determine cell migration. Cell proliferation, superoxide levels, nitric oxide (NO) levels, and arginase activity were estimated using Cell Counting Kit-8 assays, a superoxide assay kit, an NO assay kit, and an arginase activity kit. Results ARG1, alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin, and Ki67 expression increased after lens capsular injury, while zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) expression decreased. Fibronectin and collagen type I alpha1 chain (collagen 1A1) expression increased, and cell migration increased significantly in ARG1-overexpressing HLECs compared with those transfected with an empty vector after TGF-β2 treatment. These effects were reversed by ARG1 knockdown. The arginase-related pathway plays an important role in EMT. mRNAs of enzymes of the arginase-related pathway were highly expressed after ARG1 overexpression. ARG1 knockdown suppressed these expression changes. Numidargistat (CB-1158) dihydrochloride (CB-1158), an ARG1 inhibitor, suppressed TGF-β2-induced anterior subcapsular cataract (ASC) by reducing the proliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and decreasing fibronectin, α-SMA, collagen 1A1, and vimentin expression. Compared with that in nonanterior subcapsular cataract (non-ASC) patients, the expression of ARG1, collagen 1A1, vimentin, fibronectin, and Ki67 was markedly increased in ASC patients. Conclusions ARG1 can regulate EMT in EMT-associated cataracts. Based on the pathogenesis of ASC, these findings are expected to provide new therapeutic strategies for patients. Graphical abstract

Results A metabolic strategy to produce ALA directly from glucose in this recombinant E. coli via the C5 pathway was applied herein. The rational metabolic engineering by gene knockouts significantly improved ALA production from 662.3 to 1601.7 mg/L. In addition, we managed to synergistically produce ALA via the C4 pathway in recombinant strain. The expression of a modified hemA gene, encoding an ALA synthase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides, improved ALA production from 1601.7 to 2099.7 mg/L. After 24 h cultivation, a yield of 0.210 g ALA per g glucose was achieved by constructed E. coli D5:FYABD-RSA. Conclusion Our study revealed that an industrially competitive strain can be efficiently developed by metabolic engineering based on combined rational modification and optimization of gene expression.

BackgroundChronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common sports injury disease and characterized by limited mobility, perceived instability and muscle weakness, combined treatment of hip-knee-ankle is a common rehabilitation method. Tuina, as a traditional Chinese manual therapy, is usually used for CAI, but many of them only focus on the local ankle joint rather than the combination of hip and knee joint. Therefore, we have designed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the effects of Tuina base on the concept of hip-knee-ankle conjugation on the stability and balance of lower limbs and ankle function in patients with CAI.MethodsWe have designed a randomized controlled trial. A total of 72 participants with CAI will be randomly divided into functional training groups and hip-knee-ankle Tuina combined with functional training group in a 1:1 ratio. Participants in control group will receive 8 sessions of functional training (30 min per session, twice a week for 4 weeks). Participants in intervention group will receive 8 sessions of Tuina combined with functional training (twice a week for 4 weeks). The primary outcomes include the Y-Balance Test (YBT) and Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT). The Secondary outcomes include the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) and ankle range of motion (ROM). The outcome assessments will be conducted before the first intervention and after the last intervention.DiscussionThe aim of this study is to explore a safe and effective manipulation program and serve as reference for clinical treatment of CAI and expect to provide the necessary theoretical and practical support to our future research.Clinical Trial RegistrationChinese Clinical Trail Registry ChiCTR2300068274.

Phylogenetic methods have long been used in biology and more recently have been extended to other fields—for example, linguistics and technology—to study evolutionary histories. Galaxies also have an evolutionary history and fall within this broad phylogenetic framework. Under the hypothesis that chemical abundances can be used as a proxy for the interstellar medium’s DNA, phylogenetic methods allow us to reconstruct hierarchical similarities and differences among stars—essentially, a tree of evolutionary relationships and thus history. In this work, we apply phylogenetic methods to a simulated disk galaxy obtained with a chemodynamical code to test the approach. We found that at least 100 stellar particles are required to reliably portray the evolutionary history of a selected stellar population in this simulation, and that the overall evolutionary history is reliably preserved when the typical uncertainties in the chemical abundances are smaller than 0.08 dex. The results show that the shapes of the trees are strongly affected by the age–metallicity relation, as well as the star formation history of the galaxy. We found that regions with low star formation rates produce shorter trees than regions with high star formation rates. Our analysis demonstrates that phylogenetic methods can shed light on the process of galaxy evolution.

Quantifying vehicle-bridge interaction mechanism is critical for bridge safety design, transportation weight control, condition assessments in maintenance, and structural health monitoring. In this paper, the stochastic non-stationary characteristics of a bridge under vehicle-bridge interaction are investigated. The response of the bridge under the loading of vehicles is, respectively, depicted in Fourier spectrum, spectrogram, and Hilbert spectrum. Both Fourier spectrum and spectrogram exhibit some cluster bands. The Hilbert spectrum exhibits time-varying frequencies in the proximity of low bridge natural modes, which suggests possible non-linear and non-stationary characteristics. The stochastic and non-stationary properties are further characterized by using bispectrum and recurrence analysis, and the weak nonlinear properties are characterized by using nonlinear invariants. The free-decay response of bridge (vehicle left the bridge) exhibits linear properties, which is correlated with the natural modes of bridge, whereas the bridge vibrations under moving vehicle exhibit complicated stochastic non-stationary and non-linear properties. These provide the insights into the conventional modal analysis-based approaches for heavy vehicle-loaded bridge condition assessments and structural health monitoring.

Abstract Background Hydroxyl acid is an important platform chemical that covers many industrial applications due to its dual functional modules. At present, the traditional technology for hydroxyl acid production mainly adopts the petroleum route with benzene, cyclohexane, butadiene and other non-renewable resources as raw materials which violates the development law of green chemistry. Conversely, it is well-known that biotechnology and bioengineering techniques possess several advantages over chemical methods, such as moderate reaction conditions, high chemical selectivity, and environmental-friendly. However, compared with chemical engineering, there are still some major obstacles in the industrial application of biotechnology. The critical issue of the competitiveness between bioengineering and chemical engineering is products titer and volume productivity. Therefore, based on the importance of hydroxyl acids in many fields, exploring a clean, practical and environmental-friendly preparation process of the hydroxyl acids is the core purpose of this study. Results To obtain high-purity hydroxyl acid, a microbiological regulation for its bioproduction by Gluconobacter oxydans was constructed. In the study, we found a critical point of chain length determine the end-products. Gluconobacter oxydans catalyzed diols with chain length ≤ 4, forming hydroxyl acids, and converting 1,5-pentylene glycol and 1,6-hexylene glycol to diacids. Based on this principle, we successfully synthesized 75.3 g/L glycolic acid, 83.2 g/L 3-hydroxypropionic acid, and 94.3 g/L 4-hydroxybutyric acid within 48 h. Furthermore, we directionally controlled the products of C5/C6 diols by adjusting pH, resulting in 102.3 g/L 5‑hydroxyvaleric acid and 48.8 g/L 6-hydroxycaproic acid instead of diacids. Combining pH regulation and cell-recycling technology in sealed-oxygen supply bioreactor, we prepared 271.4 g 5‑hydroxyvaleric acid and 129.4 g 6-hydroxycaproic acid in 6 rounds. Conclusions In this study, a green scheme of employing G. oxydans as biocatalyst for superior-quality hydroxyl acids (C2–C6) production is raised up. The proposed strategy commendably demonstrated a novel technology with simple pH regulation for high-value production of hydroxyl acids via green bioprocess developments.

Abstract Background Apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1-interacting protein 1 (AIP1) participates in inflammatory neovascularization induction. NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to an imbalance in nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and NLR family pyrin domain containing 6 (NLRP6) expression. The mechanisms of AIP1, NOX4, ROS and inflammasomes in corneal neovascularization were studied herein. Methods C57BL/6 and AIP1-knockout mice were used in this study. The alkali burn procedure was performed on the right eye. Adenovirus encoding AIP1 plus green fluorescence protein (GFP) (Ad-AIP1-GFP) or GFP alone was injected into the right anterior chamber, GLX351322 was applied as a NOX4 inhibitor, and then corneal neovascularization was scored. The expression of related genes was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. 2′,7′-Dichlorofluorescin diacetate staining was used to determine the ROS levels. Results The expression of AIP1 was decreased, while that of cleaved interleukin-1β (clv-IL-1β) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFa) was increased after alkali burn injury. NOX4 expression was increased, the imbalance in NLRP3/NLRP6 was exacerbated, and corneal neovascularization was increased significantly in AIP1-knockout mice compared with those in C57BL/6 mice after alkali burns. These effects were reversed by AIP1 overexpression. NLRP3/NLRP6 expression was imbalanced after alkali burns. GLX351322 reversed the imbalance in NLRP3/NLRP6 by reducing the ROS levels. This treatment also reduced the expression of clv-IL-1β and VEGFa, suppressing neovascularization. Conclusions AIP1 and NOX4 can regulate corneal inflammation and neovascularization after alkali burn injury. Based on the pathogenesis of corneal neovascularization, these findings are expected to provide new therapeutic strategies for patients. Plain English summary Corneal alkali burn injury is a common type of ocular injury that is difficult to treat in the clinic. The cornea is a clear and avascular tissue. Corneal neovascularization after alkali burn injury is a serious complication; it not only seriously affects the patient’s vision but also is the main reason for failed corneal transplantation. Corneal neovascularization affects approximately 1.4 million patients a year. We show for the first time that AIP1 and NOX4 can regulate corneal inflammation and neovascularization after alkali burns. The expression of AIP1 was decreased, while that of clv-IL-1β and VEGFa was increased after alkali burns. We tried to elucidate the specific molecular mechanisms by which AIP1 regulates corneal neovascularization. NOX4 activation was due to decreased AIP1 expression in murine corneas with alkali burns. NOX4 expression was increased, the imbalance in NLRP3/NLRP6 was exacerbated, and corneal neovascularization was increased significantly in AIP1-knockout mice compared with those in C57BL/6 mice after alkali burns. These effects were reversed by AIP1 overexpression. Additionally, NLRP3/NLRP6 expression was unbalanced, with NLRP3 activation and NLRP6 suppression in the corneal alkali burn murine model. Eye drops containing GLX351322, a NOX4 inhibitor, reversed the imbalance in NLRP3/NLRP6 by reducing ROS expression. This treatment also reduced the expression of clv-IL-1β and VEGFa, reducing neovascularization. Therefore, we provide new gene therapeutic strategies for patients. With the development of neovascularization therapy, we believe that in addition to corneal transplantation, new drug or gene therapies can achieve better results. Video Abstract

Abstract Background An accurate timescale of evolutionary history is essential to testing hypotheses about the influence of historical events and processes, and the timescale for evolution is increasingly derived from analysis of DNA sequences. But variation in the rate of molecular evolution complicates the inference of time from DNA. Evidence is growing for numerous factors, such as life history and habitat, that are linked both to the molecular processes of mutation and fixation and to rates of macroevolutionary diversification. However, the most widely used methods rely on idealised models of rate variation, such as the uncorrelated and autocorrelated clocks, and molecular dating methods are rarely tested against complex models of rate change. One relationship that is not accounted for in molecular dating is the potential for interaction between molecular substitution rates and speciation, a relationship that has been supported by empirical studies in a growing number of taxa. If these relationships are as widespread as current evidence suggests, they may have a significant influence on molecular dates. Results We simulate phylogenies and molecular sequences under three different realistic rate variation models—one in which speciation rates and substitution rates both vary but are unlinked, one in which they covary continuously and one punctuated model in which molecular change is concentrated in speciation events, using empirical case studies to parameterise realistic simulations. We test three commonly used “relaxed clock” molecular dating methods against these realistic simulations to explore the degree of error in molecular dates under each model. We find average divergence time inference errors ranging from 12% of node age for the unlinked model when reconstructed under an uncorrelated rate prior using BEAST 2, to up to 91% when sequences evolved under the punctuated model are reconstructed under an autocorrelated prior using PAML. Conclusions We demonstrate the potential for substantial errors in molecular dates when both speciation rates and substitution rates vary between lineages. This study highlights the need for tests of molecular dating methods against realistic models of rate variation generated from empirical parameters and known relationships.

The authors demonstrate compact spectral light-field imaging by using a transversely dispersive metalens array and a monochrome imaging sensor. They show that 4D images can be obtained in a single shot, and demonstrate discrimination of visually indistinguishable objects.

This work aimed at developing a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for sensitive and accurate detection of ascorbic acid (AA) based on oxidase-mimicking activity of CoOOH nanoflake. CoOOH nanoflake with oxidase-like activity was prepared by using CoCl2 as precursor, NaClO as oxidant through a sonication method. The as-synthesized CoOOH nanoflake was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. Control experiments were used to demonstrate the feasibility for constructing the radiometric fluorescent sensor using the as-synthesized CoOOH nanoflake. Single-factor experiments were conducted to optimized the optimal concentration of CoOOH nanoflake and incubation time for AA detection. The results showed that the as-synthesized CoOOH nanoflakes exhibited typical hexagonal plate shape, and other characterization results also were consistent with those in previous works. The optimal concentration of CoOOH nanoflake was 39.1 μmol/L, and the optimal incubation time was 25 min. Under the optimal conditions, it was found that F428/F568 linearly correlated with AA concentration from 0.5 to 10.0 μmol/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9965. The regression equation was y=0.79416x+0.37917 (R2=0.9965) with a limit of detection of 303 nmol/L (RSN=3). The recoveries from fruit juice beverage samples spiked with varying concentrations of AA were in the range of 88.0%~115.9%, and analytical results of the sensor were correlated well with those of national standard method of China. These results indicated that the ratiometric fluorescent sensor had excellent selectivity and accuracy for AA detection, creating a new avenue for rapid detection of AA.

Corticosteroids have for some time been used as first-line drugs for the topical treatment of noninfectious uveitis, but poor ocular bioavailability and the rapid clearance of eye drops necessitate frequent dosing, reducing patient compliance. In this study, we used an acid-sensitive stearoxyl-ketal-dexamethasone pro-drug microcrystals (SKD MCs), which is consistently safe and effective in the control of uveitis inflammation in rats. We used a rat model of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) to evaluate the effects of SKD MCs in terms of clinical manifestations, molecular biology, pathological histology, and visual electrophysiology compared to dexamethasone sodium phosphate injection or phosphate-buffered saline. SKD MCs significantly reduced inflammation in EAU, improved the ability to suppress inflammatory cytokines and to protect retinal function, and significantly reduced retinal microglia activation, with no increase in intraocular pressure throughout the treatment. Our results indicate that the SKD MCs formulation holds promise as a new strategy for the treatment of noninfectious uveitis and potentially other ocular inflammatory diseases.

With the advent of the 5G era, radio frequency identification (RFID) has been widely applied in various fields as one of the key technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) to realize the Internet of Everything (IoE). In recent years, RFID-based motion sensing has emerged as an important research area with great potential for development. In this paper, an RFID backscatter sport motion sensing scheme is proposed, which effectively solves the multi-classification problem by using the received signal strength (RSS) of the backscattered RFID and the error correcting output coding (ECOC)-based support vector machine (SVM). We conduct extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, in which the signal intensities of different types of action poses are collected and the SVM is used as the classification algorithm to achieve high classification accuracies.

It well known that vehicle detection is an important component of the field of object detection. However, the environment of vehicle detection is particularly sophisticated in practical processes. It is comparatively difficult to detect vehicles of various scales in traffic scene images, because the vehicles partially obscured by green belts, roadblocks or other vehicles, as well as influence of some low illumination weather. In this paper, we present a model based on Faster R–CNN with NAS optimization and feature enrichment to realize the effective detection of multi-scale vehicle targets in traffic scenes. First, we proposed a Retinex-based image adaptive correction algorithm (RIAC) to enhance the traffic images in the dataset to reduce the influence of shadow and illumination, and improve the image quality. Second, in order to improve the feature expression of the backbone network, we conducted Neural Architecture Search (NAS) on the backbone network used for feature extraction of Faster R–CNN to generate the optimal cross-layer connection to extract multi-layer features more effectively. Third, we used the object Feature Enrichment that combines the multi-layer feature information and the context information of the last layer after cross-layer connection to enrich the information of vehicle targets, and improve the robustness of the model for challenging targets such as small scale and severe occlusion. In the implementation of the model, K-means clustering algorithm was used to select the suitable anchor size for our dataset to improve the convergence speed of the model. Our model has been trained and tested on the UN-DETRAC dataset, and the obtained results indicate that our method has art-of-state detection performance.

Abstract China has made great efforts to alleviate poverty in rural ethnic minority areas and targeted achieving the poverty-alleviation task by the end of 2020. Aba, Ganzi, and Liangshan, three of the poorest ethnic prefectures in Sichuan Province, Southwest China, have all implemented “Internet+” tactics since 2013, which have had the positive effect of increasing family revenues by improving communication infrastructure and encouraging the large-scale use of e-commerce. This paper aims to comprehensively investigate whether “Internet+” tactics play a key role in poverty alleviation in Sichuan’s rural ethnic minority areas and to propose further measures to enhance the efficiency of e-commerce practice. To this end, we conduct an analysis using the framework of classic growth theory and use panel data from 2000 to 2018 to examine the relationship between Communication Infrastructure Investment (CII) and a set of poverty-alleviation indicators, including local GDP growth rate (LGGR), local government revenue (LGR), and per-capita income of residents (PCIR). The results indicate that strengthening CII improves the PCIR and local economic growth, playing a key role in poverty alleviation. However, the stimulation of CII on LGGR and LGR wanes as time passes. More financial and technical actions will be needed to improve the efficiency and quality of current strategies for sustainable development in those areas.

The real-time monitoring and driving force research of soil salinization in semi-arid grassland are of great significance for regional and local ecological environment protection, management, and sustainable development. We selected a typical “mine-town-agriculture-pastureland-industry” interlaced ecologically fragile area as the study area. Based on the method of SI (Salinization Index)-Brightness feature space, we constructed a new spectral index named Semi-Arid Steppe Salinization Index (SASSI), which is more suitable for soil salinization remote sensing monitoring in semi-arid steppe. The geodetector method was used to analyze the driving forces of the temporal-spatial changes of soil salinization. The results indicated that: (1) SASSI presented a high correlation with soil surface salt content (R2 = 0.7698), and made full use of multi-dimensional remote sensing information. SASSI can reflect the salinization status of surface soil. The indicator calculation was simple and easy to obtain, which was conducive to the quantitative analysis and monitoring of salinization. (2) The driving factors affecting the spatial distribution and change of soil salinization were water, surface mines, town, agriculture, industry, road network, and elevation. The salinized areas were mainly distributed around the wetlands of the Xilin River Basin, mining landscapes, and town landscapes. (3) The total area of salinized soil in the study area increased from 32.03 km2 in 2002 to 150.46 km2 in 2017. The area of salinized soil increased rapidly from 2005 to 2014, but the growth rate slowed down after 2014. The salinized soil was mainly located in the salt marsh wetland in 2002, however had spread to the whole study area in 2017. This study provides references for remote sensing monitoring of soil salinization and the impact of land use, topography and other natural factors on soil salinization in the semi-arid steppe.

PurposeFungal keratitis is a sight-threatening corneal infection caused by fungal pathogens, and the pathogenic mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine whether NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis contributes to Candida albicans (C. albicans) keratitis and explore the underlying mechanism.MethodsAn in vivo mouse model of C. albicans keratitis and an in vitro culture model of human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) challenged with heat-killed C. albicans (HKCA) were established in this study. The degree of corneal infection was evaluated by clinical scoring. Gene expression was assessed using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blot analysis or immunofluorescence staining was performed to evaluate protein expression. TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining was performed to examine the pyroptotic cell death. A lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay was performed to assess cytotoxicity.ResultsCompared with the mock-infected group, we observed that the mRNA levels of NLRP3, caspase-1 (CASP1), interleukin (IL)−1β and gasdermin-D (GSDMD) in C. albicans-infected mice cornea was significantly increased. Our data also demonstrated that the protein expression of NLRP3 and the pyroptosis-related markers apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), cleaved CASP1, N-GSDMD, cleaved IL-1β and cleaved IL-18 as well as pyroptotic cell death were dramatically elevated in the mouse model of C. albicans keratitis. More importantly, NLRP3 knockdown markedly alleviated pyroptosis and consequently reduced corneal inflammatory reaction in C. albicans keratitis. In vitro, the presence of activated NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptotic cell death were validated in HCECs exposed to HKCA. Furthermore, the potassium (K+) channel inhibitor glyburide decreased LDH release and suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis in HCECs exposed to HKCA.ConclusionIn conclusion, the current study revealed for the first time that NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis occur in C. albicans-infected mouse corneas and HCECs. Moreover, NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis signaling is involved in the disease severity of C. albicans keratitis. Therefore, This NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent pathway may be an attractive target for the treatment of fungal keratitis.

Object detection models based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) have achieved state-of-the-art performance by heavily rely on large-scale training samples. They are insufficient when used in specific applications, such as the detection of military objects, as in these instances, a large number of samples is hard to obtain. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes the use of Gabor-CNN for object detection based on a small number of samples. First of all, a feature extraction convolution kernel library composed of multi-shape Gabor and color Gabor is constructed, and the optimal Gabor convolution kernel group is obtained by means of training and screening, which is convolved with the input image to obtain feature information of objects with strong auxiliary function. Then, the k-means clustering algorithm is adopted to construct several different sizes of anchor boxes, which improves the quality of the regional proposals. We call this regional proposal process the Gabor-assisted Region Proposal Network (Gabor-assisted RPN). Finally, the Deeply-Utilized Feature Pyramid Network (DU-FPN) method is proposed to strengthen the feature expression of objects in the image. A bottom-up and a top-down feature pyramid is constructed in ResNet-50 and feature information of objects is deeply utilized through the transverse connection and integration of features at various scales. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper achieves better results than the state-of-art contrast models on data sets with small samples in terms of accuracy and recall rate, and thus has a strong application prospect.

Abstract Background To analyze the related factors of visual acuity after phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 42 patients (51 eyes) with CRF (failure, uremia) on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis and 40 patients (50 eyes) without CRF as a control group. Each individual underwent physical and laboratory examinations including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), slit lamp examination, intraocular pressure, corneal endothelial cell count, fundus examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for macular examination. The patients with abnormal platelet, liver and kidney function, coagulation function received treatment accordingly to reduce the perioperative risk. All patients underwent phacoemulsification with IOL implantation. Follow-up examinations were performed at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery and included BCVA, slit lamp examination, noncontact IOP, dilated fundus examination and OCT of the macula. Results In control group the preoperative RBC, HB, Cr, and urea values were not associated with the pre- or postoperative BCVA. Abstract Background Butyric acid is a platform chemical material, the production of which has been greatly stimulated by the diverse range of downstream applications in many industries. In particular, higher quality butyric acid used in food and medicine, is more dependent on microbiological production methods. Hence, the bio-oxidation of butanol to butyric acid has been identified as a promising method with good potential economic and environmental benefits. However, both butanol and butyric acid are usually intensively toxic to most microorganisms as well as the bio-oxidation pathway. To develop a green, efficient and competitive microbiological method is the primary work to overcome the bottleneck of butyric acid industry. Result A combined bioprocess was designed with alternative whole-cell catalysis for butyric acid bio-conversion from butanol by Gluconobacter oxydans in a sealed-oxygen supply bioreactor (SOS). In the operation system, the escape of volatile substrates and toxic chemicals to cells can be avoided by the use of a sealed bioreactor, combined with the rejuvenation of cells by supplying energy co-factors. Finally, during a one-batch whole-cell catalysis, the utilization rate of substrate increased from 56.6 to 96.0% by the simple skill. Additionally, the techno-practical bioprocess can realize the purpose of cell-recycling technology through the rejuvenation effect of co-factor. Finally, we obtained 135.3 g/L butyric acid and 216.7 g/L sorbose during a 60-h whole-cell catalysis. This techno-practical technology provides a promising approach to promote the industrial production of butyric acid with more competitiveness. Conclusion The techno-practical biotechnology has powerfully promoted the process of butyric acid production by microorganisms, especially makes up for the lack of aerobic fermentation in the industry, and surmounts the shortcomings of traditional anaerobic fermentation. At the same time, this technically practical system provides a promising approach for the promotion of the industrial production of butyric acid in a more competitive manner.

Abstract Background The critical issue in the competitiveness between bioengineering and chemical engineering is the products titer and the volume productivity. The most direct and effective approach usually employs high-density biocatalyst, while the weakened mass transfer and evoked foam problem accompany ultrahigh-density biocatalyst loading and substrate/product titer. In high-density obligate aerobic bioconversion, oxygen as electron acceptor is a speed-limiting step in bioprocesses, but sufficient oxygen supply will lead to the foaming which results in a significant reduction in oxygen utilization and the use of additional defoamers. In this study, we designed a novel sealed-oxygen supply (SOS) biotechnology to resolve the formidable barrier of oxygen transferring rate (OTR), for bio-based fuels and chemical production process. Results Based on systemic analysis of whole-cell catalysis in Gluconobacter oxydans, a novel sealed-oxygen supply technology was smartly designed and experimentally performed for biocatalytic oxidation of alcohols, sugars and so on. By a simple operation skill of automatic online supply of oxygen in a sealed stirring tank bioreactor of SOS, OTR barrier and foaming problem was resolved with great ease. We finally obtained ultrahigh-titer products of xylonic acid (XA), 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HPA), and erythrulose at 588.4 g/L, 69.4 g/L, and 364.7 g/L, respectively. Moreover, the volume productivity of three chemical products was improved by 150–250% compared with normal biotechnology. This SOS technology provides a promising approach to promote bioengineering competitiveness and advantages over chemical engineering. Conclusion SOS technology was demonstrated as an economic and universally applicable approach to bio-based fuels and chemicals production by whole-cell catalysis. The novel technology greatly promotes the competitiveness of bioengineering for chemical engineering, and provides a promising platform for the green and environmental use of biofuels.

In order to solve the problem of model accuracy reduction caused by the difficulty of obtaining specific training samples or the insufficient number of samples in the application of existing object detection and recognition model based on deep learning, this article proposes a conditional generative adversarial network model (VSA-CGAN), which integrates the self-attention mechanism of visual perception to optimize the inference of object attention feature maps, so as to learn the global information of the image and the detailed features of the object. It is designed to add conditional features in the generator and the discriminator, associate the specific dimensions of the data with the semantic features, and explicitly indicate the model to generate the corresponding object signature category information, so as to generate the feature representation of the image which is more suitable for the distribution of the original data. The model in this article has completed numerical experiments on several general standard data sets, and compared with several mainstream generative adversarial network models in image data augmentation performance. The experimental results show that the generation model in this article has excellent object simulation ability and strong application prospects.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been widely applied in the assessment of railway ballast conditions (fouling, moisture) by using the spectrum of the tested GPR signal. However, the drawbacks of the low time-frequency resolution and mode mixing prevent the traditional spectrum methods from a wide application. This paper uses the advanced time-frequency analysis of GPR signal based on optimized variational mode decomposition to extract the features of ballast. The new approach overperforms the conventional frequency spectrum methods of GPR signal processing by giving a clear and quantitative assessment of ballast signals. Experimental results of GPR with dry and wet fouled ballasts demonstrate that, by comparison with the feature extraction method of conventional spectrum methods such as spectrogram and wavelet, the feature extraction method based on the optimized VMD has much better separability and quantitative identification capability.

Airborne hyperspectral imaging plays an increasingly important role in environmental monitoring. However, due to the limitations of the acquisition conditions, there are uneven radiation and chromatic aberrations in the mosaic data. Accurate preprocessing of the original data is the premise of qualitative and quantitative remote sensing. In this study, we proposed a comprehensive radiation distortion correction method that integrates radiation attenuation difference correction, topographic correction, and multi-strip images consistency adjustment (RA-TOC-CA). First, the radiation attenuation equation was constructed by combining the viewing geometry, terrain, and the elevation difference between the UAV and the ground to eliminate the radiation attenuation difference of pixels acquired at the different instantaneous field of view (IFOV). Second, an improved kernel-driven BRDF model was built combining terrain information and illumination-viewing (flight attitude and sensor IFOV) geometry to eliminate the radiation unevenness and BRDF distortion caused by topography. Third, adjusting the reflectance of multi-strip images according to the homonymous points’ reflectance of adjacent strips should be equal, eliminating the radiation differences between multiple strips. Based on multi-strip airborne hyperspectral images collected in the Shaanxi province of China, the correction results of the RA-TOC-CA method were compared with those of the SCS+C and Minnaert+SCS methods regarding various evaluation criteria. The results showed that SCS+C and Minnaert+SCS can reduce the topographic effect but cannot eliminate the reflectance difference at the edges of adjacent images, and SCS+C overcorrects the reflectance. RA-TOC-CA weakened the topographic effects and brightness gradient, which was physically stable and generalizable. Compared with previous studies, RA-TOC-CA provided a complete radiation distortion correction method for airborne hyperspectral images and had a solid theoretical basis. This study introduces an effective method for radiation distortion correction of airborne hyperspectral images and provides technical support for large-scale applications of hyperspectral images.

Lithium-ion batteries are being increasingly used as the main energy storage devices in modern mobile applications, including modern spacecrafts, satellites, and electric vehicles, in which consistent and severe vibrations exist. As the lithium-ion battery market share grows, so must our understanding of the effect of mechanical vibrations and shocks on the electrical performance and mechanical properties of such batteries. Only a few recent studies investigated the effect of vibrations on the degradation and fatigue of battery cell materials as well as the effect of vibrations on the battery pack structure. This review focused on the recent progress in determining the effect of dynamic loads and vibrations on lithium-ion batteries to advance the understanding of lithium-ion battery systems. Theoretical, computational, and experimental studies conducted in both academia and industry in the past few years are reviewed herein. Although the effect of dynamic loads and random vibrations on the mechanical behavior of battery pack structures has been investigated and the correlation between vibration and the battery cell electrical performance has been determined to support the development of more robust electrical systems, it is still necessary to clarify the mechanical degradation mechanisms that affect the electrical performance and safety of battery cells.

The importance of the vibration and dynamics of electric vehicle drivetrains has increased because of noise and durability concerns. In this study, the important dynamic responses of drivetrains, including the dynamic mesh force acting at the gear teeth, dynamic loads acting at the bearings, and torsional fluctuation of the tire or load under major vibration excitations, such as motor torque fluctuation excitation and spiral bevel gear mesh excitation, were investigated. The results demonstrate that at a lower motor speed, dynamic responses such as the dynamic mesh force, dynamic bearing loads, and dynamic torsional displacement of the tire or load under motor torque fluctuation are dominant. At a higher motor speed, however, the dynamic responses under the gear mesh excitation are dominant. In addition, increasing the pinion-motor torsional compliance is an effective approach for suppressing the dynamic responses of drivetrains under motor torque fluctuation.

This study evaluated the safety of a modified method to implant an intraocular lens (IOL) into the capsular bag immediately after capsulorhexis with a whole or partial nucleus to protect the posterior capsule (PC) during phacoemulsification in a series of 12 Morgagnian cataracts. For 3 cases of hypermature cataracts with smaller and rigid nuclei, after a complete capsulorhexis, an IOL was directly inserted into the capsular bag, which protected the PC during the subsequent phacoemulsification process in the iris plate. For the other 9 cases with larger and softer nuclei, after the nucleus was partially emulsified, the IOL was inserted into the bag. Even with an obvious surge for some cases, the surgeries were uneventful in all 12 cases, with no PC rent or vitreous loss. IOL implantation into the capsular bag with a whole or partial nucleus can provide effective protection for the PC for hypermature cataract during phacoemulsification.

Interval prediction of wind power, which features the upper and lower limits of wind power at a given confidence level, plays a significant role in accurate prediction and stability of the power grid integrated with wind power. However, the conventional methods of interval prediction are commonly based on a hypothetic probability distribution function, which neglects the correlations among various variables, leading to decreased prediction accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, we improve the multi-objective interval prediction based on the conditional copula function, through which we can fully utilize the correlations among variables to improve prediction accuracy without an assumed probability distribution function. We use the multi-objective optimization method of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) to obtain the optimal solution set. The particular best solution is weighted by the prediction interval average width (PIAW) and prediction interval coverage probability (PICP) to pick the optimized solution in practical examples. Finally, we apply the proposed method to three wind power plants in different Chinese cities as examples for validation and obtain higher prediction accuracy compared with other methods, i.e., relevance vector machine (RVM), artificial neural network (ANN), and particle swarm optimization kernel extreme learning machine (PSO-KELM). These results demonstrate the superiority and practicability of this method in interval prediction of wind power.

Spatial alignment is a key feature in the design of the straddle-type monorail system (STM), which greatly affects the dynamic characteristics of the STM system. Considering the shear and torsional deformation of the track beam, a new coupling dynamic model of the STM system is established to investigate the dynamic characteristics under spatial alignment. The running safety and the vibration stability of the STM system under different spatial alignments are studied, and the optimal distance between the slope-changing point and the straight-slowing point is determined. Results show that the running safety and vibration stability indices increase when the curve radius decreases and the longitudinal slope gradient soars, and the vibration response of the vehicle is more obvious when the slope-changing points coincide with the transition curve of the track beam compared with that the straight-slowing points do not coincide with the slope-changing points. From the view of running safety and vibration stability, the slope-changing points should not coincide with the transition curve of the track beam, especially with the straight-slowing points. The proposed method can be adopted in the safety design and vibration control of the STM system.

The dynamics of spiral bevel gears have gained increasing importance due to concerns relating to noise and durability. This is because the mesh force acting on the gear teeth is amplified under dynamic conditions, potentially reducing the fatigue life of the gears. Furthermore, a sizable dynamic force can be transmitted to the housing, inducing structure-born gear whine. The elasticity of the bearings can influence the dynamics of spiral bevel gears. In this article, the finite element formulation of a spiral bevel geared rotor dynamic system is applied to investigate the influence of bearing elasticity on the dynamics of spiral bevel gears. The designs and configurations of rear axles are modeled and analyzed for real-world applications, to gain an enhanced practical understanding of the effect of bearing stiffness on spiral bevel gear dynamics.

Abstract Because of the uncertainty and randomness of wind speed, wind power has characteristics such as nonlinearity and multiple frequencies. Accurate prediction of wind power is one effective means of improving wind power integration. Because the traditional single model cannot fully characterize the fluctuating characteristics of wind power, scholars have attempted to build other prediction models based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) or ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to tackle this problem. However, the prediction accuracy of these models is affected by modal aliasing and illusive components. Aimed at these defects, this paper proposes a multi-frequency combination prediction model based on variational mode decomposition (VMD). We use a back propagation neural network (BPNN), autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) to predict high, intermediate, and low frequency components, respectively. Based on the predicted values of each component, the BPNN is applied to combine them into a final wind power prediction value. Finally, the prediction performance of the single prediction models (ARMA, BPNN, LS-SVM) and the decomposition prediction models (EMD and EEMD) are used to compare with the proposed VMD model according to the evaluation indices such as average absolute error, mean square error, and root mean square error to validate its feasibility and accuracy. The results show that the prediction accuracy of the proposed VMD model is higher.

Abstract Background To evaluate the results and complications of phacoemulsification with hydrodelineation and ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD)-assisted hydrodissection for posterior polar cataract (PPC). Methods Medical records of 24 eyes from 17 patients with clinical diagnosis of PPC, who underwent phacoemulsification with hydrodelineation and OVD-assisted hydrodissection, were retrospectively reviewed. Results The incidence of posterior capsule rupture (PCR) was 16.67% (4/24): 2 cases occurred during epinucleus removal, and 2 cases occurred during OVD removal after the implantation of the intraocular lens into the bag. No nucleus piece or lens materials dropped into the vitreous during cataract surgery, and no obvious postoperative complications were found during follow-up. All patients had improved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) 1 month postoperatively. Conclusion OVD-assisted hydrodissection could be an effective technique in phacoemulsification to reduce the incidence of PCR and achieve satisfactory postoperative outcomes.

Abstract Background The recent advancement in the management of chronic renal failure (CRF) has significantly increased the longevity of the patients, which increase the incidence of severe vitreoretinopathy. The vitrectomy is highly risky in this particular group of patients due to their systemic comorbidity. The timing surgical intervention is usually delayed because of the systemic conditions. This study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of 25-guage vitrectomy for severe vitreoretinopathy in the CRF patients. Methods In this retrospective study, 16 eyes of 16 CRF patients with severe vitreoretinopathy were undergone 25-guage vitrectomy in the department of Ophthalmology of the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University from February 2015 to April 2017. The visual outcome, complications and perioperative medical management were documented and analyzed. Results The best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)of fourteen eyes were lower than 20/200 preoperatively. Surgery duration ranged from 28 to 72 min, with a mean of 48.4 ± 13.6 min. During the surgery, 12 eyes were diagnosed with DR, while two them were complicated with tractional retinal detachment and one with branch retinal vein occlusion. Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are one important category of additives in plastics, which are ubiquitous products of e-waste recycling areas, where PAEs are released to the environment intensively and higher exposure level is expected for the employees. This study investigated human exposure levels of PAEs in an e-waste recycling area (Ziya Circular Economy Park (ZCEP) in Tianjin, China) with intending to explore the impacts of residence spatial variation and dismantling manipulation mode. We collected 157 urine samples from three sites around ZCEP with different distances from the core dismantling site and urinary phthalate metabolites (mPAEs) concentrations were measured and were compared among these three sites. The exposure levels of PAEs exhibited spatial variation according to the distance from the core dismantling site, and urinary median ∑mPAEs concentrations (389 ng/mL) of the employees in ZCEP were significantly higher than those of residents in Ziya town (285 ng/mL) and the downtown of Jinghai district (207 ng/mL) (p 0.05). Besides, there was no correlation between exposure levels of different PAEs and their physicochemical parameters like the logKow (p > 0.05). RNA silencing pathways control eukaryotic gene expression transcriptionally or posttranscriptionally in a sequence-specific manner. In RNA silencing, the production of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) gives rise to various classes of 20–24 nucleotide (nt) small RNAs (smRNAs). In Arabidopsis thaliana, smRNAs are often derived from long dsRNA molecules synthesized by one of the six genomically encoded RNA-dependent RNA Polymerase (RDR) proteins. However, the full complement of the RDR-dependent smRNAs and functions that these proteins and their RNA-binding cofactors play in plant RNA silencing has not been fully uncovered. To address this gap, we performed a global genomic analysis of all six RDRs and two of their cofactors to find new substrates for RDRs and targets of the resulting RDR-derived siRNAs to uncover new functions for these proteins in plants. Based on these analyses, we identified substrates for the three RDRγ clade proteins (RDR3–5), which had not been well-characterized previously. We also identified new substrates for the other three RDRs (RDR1, RDR2, and RDR6) as well as the RDR2 cofactor RNA-directed DNA methylation 12 (RDM12) and the RDR6 cofactor suppressor of gene silencing 3 (SGS3). These findings revealed that the target substrates of SGS3 are not limited to those solely utilized by RDR6, but that this protein seems to be a more general cofactor for the RDR family of proteins. Additionally, we found that RDR6 and SGS3 are involved in the production of smRNAs that target transcripts related to abiotic stresses, including water deprivation, salt stress, and ABA response, and as expected the levels of these mRNAs are increased in rdr6 and sgs3 mutant plants. Correspondingly, plants that lack these proteins (rdr6 and sgs3 mutants) are hypersensitive to ABA treatment, tolerant to high levels of PEG8000, and have a higher survival rate under salt treatment in comparison to wild-type plants. In total, our analyses have provided an extremely data-rich resource for uncovering new functions of RDR-dependent RNA silencing in plants, while also revealing a previously unexplored link between the RDR6/SGS3-dependent pathway and plant abiotic stress responses.
