Background: Mold exposure is a common environmental issue that can adversely affect health, particularly among older adults. The impact of mold exposure on anxiety symptoms in this population has not been extensively studied. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between mold exposure and anxiety symptoms in older adults, considering the mediating role of cognitive function and the moderating effects of open window ventilation and multivitamin supplementation. Methods: Data from the eighth wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) was utilized, including 11,021 participants aged 65 and older. Logistic regression models and moderated mediation analysis were employed to explore these relationships. Understanding phytoplankton dynamics is crucial for assessing water ecosystem health. However, traditional in-situ investigations often fall short of capturing the spatial-temporal variations of phytoplankton community structure and biomass on large scales. This study introduces a novel approach that harnesses the power of machine learning models coupled with Sentinel-2 satellite data to predict phytoplankton shifting and chlorophyll-a (Chla) in three large shallow lakes in central China from 2016 to 2021. We employed an array of machine learning algorithms, including the extreme gradient boosting method (XGBoost), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) to retrieve Chla and phytoplankton groups clustered by hierarchical cluster analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity index (HCA). The influences of environmental factors, including meteorology and nutrients, on phytoplankton dynamics were then explored. Our results identified four distinct phytoplankton groups, each exhibiting unique structural characteristics according to the HCA. The RF and XGBoost, utilizing top-of-atmosphere reflectance, provided the most accurate estimations of phytoplankton shifting and Chla, respectively. The red edge-red ratio emerged as a key variable in both models, underlining the significance of red edge bands in phytoplankton monitoring. We mapped spatial-temporal patterns of phytoplankton group occurrence and average Chla concentration across the three lakes. Our findings indicated that eutrophication extended periods of cyanobacteria domination and algal blooms, particularly in bays and nearshore areas. Redundancy analysis and classification and regression tree model highlighted temperature as a significant driver of phytoplankton shifting, while nutrient levels exhibited stronger influences on Chla. Our study underscores the potential of integrating machine learning models with Sentinel-2 data to enhance the monitoring and prediction of phytoplankton dynamics in shallow lakes. This approach offers valuable insights for the early detection of algal blooms and informed management strategies, contributing to the preservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract Background HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) exhibits different characteristics from HPV-negative tumors in terms of tumor development, clinical features, treatment response, and prognosis. Layilin (LAYN), which contains homology with C-type lectins, plays a critical role in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. However, the prognostic value of LAYN and the relationship between LAYN and immune infiltration levels in HPV-related HNSCC patients still require a comprehensive understanding. Herein, we aimed to assess the prognostic value of LAYN and to investigate its underlying immunological function in HPV-related HNSCC. Methods Through various bioinformatics methods, we analyzed the data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER) and Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) databases to explore the potential underlying oncogenic impression of LAYN, including the relevance of LAYN to survival outcomes, clinicopathological factors, immune cell infiltration, and immune marker sets in HPV-related HNSCC. To study the thermal cracking susceptibility of laser-welded CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys, stainless steel and aluminum alloy plates were each used as backing for welding. The microstructure of the weld and morphology of the fracture were examined. In addition, the chemical compositions of the fractures, the interfacial tension between the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy and liquid aluminum alloy, and the linear expansion coefficient of the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy were determined. The results show that when stainless steel is used as the base plate, no cracking is apparent in the weld, and the microstructure is made up of dendrites and equiaxed crystals. Conversely, when an aluminum alloy plate is adopted, solidification cracks are seen at the center of the weld, and the microstructure consists of bright polygonal dendrites scattered in a dark gray matrix. In the later stage of solidification, the contact angle between the Al-dominated low-melt liquid metal and the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy is about 14.6°, which is distributed in the form of a liquid film between the dendrite of the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy weld, and the linear expansion coefficient of the high-entropy alloy is 23 × 10−6-25 × 10−6 K−1 in the temperature range of 900–1100 K, which is higher than the thermal expansion coefficient of austenitic stainless steel in this range, and the solidification temperature range is 1000–1400K. Therefore, thermal cracks tend to occur during the solidification process.

Objective Current studies lack a comprehensive understanding of the environmental factors influencing type 2 diabetes, hindering an in-depth grasp of the overall etiology. To address this gap, we utilized network science tools to highlight research trends, knowledge structures, and intricate relationships among factors, offering a new perspective for a profound understanding of the etiology. Methods The Web of Science database was employed to retrieve documents relevant to environmental risk factors in type 2 diabetes from 2012 to 2024. Bibliometric analysis using Microsoft Excel and OriginPro provided a detailed scientific production profile, including articles, journals, countries, and authors. Co-occurrence analysis was employed to determine the collaboration state and knowledge structures, utilizing social network tools such as Gephi, Tableau, and R Studio. Additionally, theme evolutionary analysis was conducted using SciMAT to offer insights into research trends. Results The publications and themes related to environmental factors in type 2 diabetes have consistently risen, shaping a well-established research domain. Lifestyle environmental factors, particularly diet and nutrition, stand out as the most represented and rapidly growing topics. Key focal hotspots include sedentary and digital behavior, PM 2.5 , ethnicity and socioeconomic status, traffic and greenspace, and depression. The theme evolutionary analysis revealed three distinct paths: (1) oxidative stress–air pollutants–PM 2.5 –air pollutants; (2) calcium–metabolic syndrome–cardiovascular disease; and (3) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)–persistent organic pollutants (POPs)–obesity. Conclusions Digital behavior signifies a novel approach for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. The influence of PM 2.5 and calcium on oxidative stress and abnormal vascular contraction is intricately linked to microvascular diabetes complications. The transition from PCBs and POPs to obesity underscores the disruption of endocrine function by chemicals, elevating the risk of diabetes. Future studies should explore the connections between environmental factors, microvascular complications, and long-term outcomes in diabetes.

Abstract Plant‐derived exosomes (PEs) possess an array of therapeutic properties, including antitumor, antiviral, and anti‐inflammatory capabilities. They are also implicated in defensive responses to pathogenic attacks. Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) regeneration represents a global medical challenge, with appropriate research concentration on three pivotal domains: neural regeneration promotion, inflammation inhibition, and innovation and application of regenerative scaffolds. Unfortunately, the utilization of PE in SCI therapy remains unexplored. Herein, we isolated PE from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Lycium barbarum L. and discovered their inflammatory inhibition and neuronal differentiation promotion capabilities. Compared with exosomes derived from ectomesenchymal stem cells (EMSCs), PE demonstrated a substantial enhancement in neural differentiation. We encapsulated isoliquiritigenin (ISL)‐loaded plant‐derived exosomes (ISL@PE) from L. barbarum L. within a 3D‐printed bionic scaffold. The intricate construct modulated the inflammatory response following SCI, facilitating the restoration of damaged axons and culminating in ameliorated neurological function. This pioneering investigation proposes a novel potential route for insoluble drug delivery via plant exosomes, as well as SCI repair. This paper presents a stepped electromagnetic bandgap(EBG) hosted on the T-shaped stepped stub with an inverted H-shaped slot etched on the ground to enhance bandwidth and improve isolation for a compact UWB-MIMO antenna developed from our previous design. The characteristic mode analysis is used to offer physical insight into the operation phenomena taking place in the evolution of antenna. The proposed antenna has a compact size of $27\times 22\times 0.8$ mm and realize bandwidth from 3.07 GHz to 11.1 GHz, keeping the isolation more than 20 dB. Key parameters evaluating the antenna performance like radiation pattern, gain, radiation efficiency above 75% and envelope correlation coefficient below 0.05 are investigated. The simulated and measured results agree well, testifying the proposed MIMO antenna is a suitable candidate for UWB applications.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate whether dexmedetomidine (DEX) can relieve postoperative pain and reduce stress reaction after laparoscopic uterine fibroids (UF) surgery. Methods: This randomized controlled study included 100 patients age range of 40–60 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 1–2 grade, admitted for laparoscopic UF surgery from January 2020 to October 2023. The patients were randomly allocated to the DEX group (n = 50) and non-DEX group (n = 50). The visual analogue scale (VAS), Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) score, anesthesia time, spontaneous breathing recovery time, consciousness recovery time, extubation time, and recovery room time were recorded. Results: The VAS of the DEX group was smaller than that of the non-DEX group at half an hour, but there was no significant difference in VAS at 1 h, 12 h and 24 h. Dex group has a RASS value closer to zero than non-DEX group at half an hour. There was no significant difference in RASS at 1 h, 12 h, or 24 h. There were differences in spontaneous breathing recovery time, consciousness recovery time, extubation time, recovery room time, chills and nausea between the two groups. Conclusion: Application of DEX in perioperative period can relieve postoperative pain, reduce stress reaction after laparoscopic UF surgery. S32750 dual-phase stainless steel (DSS) wires were prepared by cold drawing with a strain of ε = 0~3.6. The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of these DSS wires at different strains were investigated. Specifically, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of a S32750 DSS wire at a strain of ε = 3.6 reached 1771 MPa and 1952 MPa, respectively. The microstructure of the wire was transformed into a heterogeneous microstructure, which consisted of ferrite fiber grains and a nanofibrous grain structure consisting of austenite and strain-induced martensite nanofiber grains. A sub-grain structure was observed inside the ferrite fiber. The austenitic phase followed the evolutionary steps of stacking faults, twinning, ε-martensite, α-martensite, and, finally, austenite, before transitioning into a nanofibrous grain structure. This nanofibrous grain structure significantly contributed to the strength compared with the relatively coarse ferrite phase.

Objective When considering proposals to improve diets, it is important to understand how factors like price and income can affect saturated fat (SF) intake and demand. In this study, we examine and estimate the influence of price and income on intake across 160 countries, by age and sex, and derive sensitivity measures (price elasticities) that vary by age, sex and world region.Design We econometrically estimate intake responsiveness to income and prices across countries, accounting for differences by world region, age and sex. Intake data by age, sex and country were obtained from the 2018 Global Dietary Database. These data were then linked to global price data for select food groups from the World Bank International Comparison Programme and income data from the World Development Indicators Databank (World Bank).Results Intake differences due to price were highly significant, with a 1% increase in price associated with a lower SF intake (% energy/d) of about 4.3 percentage points. We also find significant differences across regions. In high-income countries, median (age 40) intake reductions were 1.4, 0.8 and 0.2 percentage points, given a 1% increase in the price of meat, dairy, and oils and fats, respectively. Price elasticities varied with age but not sex. Intake differences due to income were insignificant when regional binary variables were included in the analysis.Conclusion The results of this study show heterogeneous associations among prices and intake within and across countries. Policymakers should consider these heterogeneous effects as they address global nutrition and health challenges.

HRB500 steel reinforced ultra-high performance concrete beams with different section sizes were tested to study size effect on shear performance. The experimental phenomena and results of ultra-high performance concrete beams were analyzed. The size effect on ductility, shear crack strength, and shear strength of beams was investigated. Besides, the applicability of the current specification formulas was compared on the basis of the obtained test data. The results show that the failure modes of beams with different cross-sectional size were all shear-compression failure. The stress redistribution capacity, deflection, stiffness, and main shear crack characteristic parameters of the beams were positively correlated with the section size. Furthermore, the displacement ductility coefficient, shear crack strength, and shear strength of beams decreased with the increase of cross-sectional dimensions, and there was an obvious size effect. Through comparison and analysis, the predicted values of the shear bearing capacity formula proposed by Chen Baochun were better.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether dexmedetomidine can reduce the circulatory response in laparoscopic uterine fibroids (UF) surgery. Our purpose was to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on the circulatory response in laparoscopic UF surgery. Methods: This was a randomized controlled study of 214 patients age range of 40–60 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 1–2 grade, undergoing elective laparoscopic UF surgery at Fuxing Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2020 to October 2023. Patients were randomly allocated to the non-dexmedetomidine group (Group1) and dexmedetomidine group (Group2). The mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were measured: when entering the operation room (MAP1, HR1), immediately at the time of local pituitrin injection (MAP2, HR2), and at 5 minutes after injection of pituitrin (MAP3, HR3). The medications and dosages (propofol, urapidil hydrochloride, fluid) used during the operation were recorded as well as the recovery (drowsiness, chills, nausea, vomiting, dysphoria) after the operation. Total mean time from the beginning of the operation to pituitrin injection (Time1) and recovery time after peaking blood pressure with pituitrin injection (Time2) were also recorded. Results: There were no significant differences in age, height, weight, size and number of UFs, and the location of uterine fibroids between the two groups. There were no differences between the groups for MAP1, MAP2, HR1, HR2, HR3, and Time1 (all p > 0.05), but the dexmedetomidine group was smaller in MAP3 (p = 0.041) and Time2 (p = 0.000) than the non-dexmedetomidine group. There were significant differences in MAP3-MAP1 (p = 0.025), propofol (p = 0.011), and urapidil hydrochloride (p = 0.000) between the two groups. The dexmedetomidine group was smaller in chills (p = 0.002), nausea (p = 0.000), vomiting (p = 0.04), and dysphoria (p = 0.024) than the non-dexmedetomidine group. Conclusions: Dexmedetomidine maintains a stable hemodynamic response and is beneficial to postoperative recovery in laparoscopic UF surgery. Utilizing online gradient pressure liquid extraction (OGPLE) coupled with a high-performance liquid chromatography antioxidant analysis system, we examined the antioxidative active components present in both the aerial parts and roots of dandelion. By optimizing the chromatographic conditions, we identified the ferric reducing–antioxidant power system as the most suitable for online antioxidant reactions in dandelion. Compared to offline ultrasonic extraction, the OGPLE method demonstrated superior efficiency in extracting chemical components with varying polarities from the samples. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed twelve compounds within the dandelion samples, with nine demonstrating considerable antioxidant efficacy. Of these, the aerial parts and roots of dandelion contained nine and four antioxidant constituents, respectively. Additionally, molecular docking studies were carried out to investigate the interaction between these nine antioxidants and four proteins associated with oxidative stress (glutathione peroxidase, inducible nitric oxide synthase, superoxide dismutase, and xanthine oxidase). The nine antioxidant compounds displayed notable binding affinities below −5.0 kcal/mol with the selected proteins, suggesting potential receptor–ligand interactions. These findings contribute to enhancing our understanding of dandelion and provide a comprehensive methodology for screening the natural antioxidant components from herbs.

Nowadays, magnetic materials are also drawing considerable attention in the development of innovative energy converters such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), where the introduction of magnetic materials at the triboelectric interface not only significantly enhances the energy harvesting efficiency but also promotes TENG entry into the era of intelligence and multifunction. In this review, we begin from the basic operating principle of TENGs and then summarize the recent progress in applications of magnetic materials in the design of TENG magnetic materials by categorizing them into soft ferrites and amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys. While highlighting key role of magnetic materials in and future opportunities for improving their performance in energy conversion, we also discuss the most promising choices available today and describe emerging approaches to create even better magnetic TENGs and TENG-based sensors as far as intelligence and multifunctionality are concerned. In addition, the paper also discusses the integration of magnetic TENGs as a power source for third-party sensors and briefly explains the self-powered applications in a wide range of related fields. Finally, the paper discusses the challenges and prospects of magnetic TENGs.

In advancing the transition of the energy sector toward heightened sustainability and environmental friendliness, biopolymers have emerged as key elements in the construction of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to their renewable sources and excellent biodegradability. The development of these TENG devices is of significant importance to the next generation of renewable and sustainable energy technologies based on carbon-neutral materials. This paper introduces the working principles, material sources, and wide-ranging applications of biopolymer-based triboelectric nanogenerators (BP-TENGs). It focuses on the various categories of biopolymers, ranging from natural sources to microbial and chemical synthesis, showcasing their significant potential in enhancing TENG performance and expanding their application scope, while emphasizing their notable advantages in biocompatibility and environmental sustainability. To gain deeper insights into future trends, we discuss the practical applications of BP-TENG in different fields, categorizing them into energy harvesting, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. Finally, the paper reveals the shortcomings, challenges, and possible solutions of BP-TENG, aiming to promote the advancement and application of biopolymer-based TENG technology. We hope this review will inspire the further development of BP-TENG towards more efficient energy conversion and broader applications.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to significantly impact the global population, thus countermeasure platforms that enable rapid development of therapeutics against variants of SARS-CoV-2 are essential. We report use of a phage display human antibody library approach to rapidly identify neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against SARS-CoV-2. We demonstrate the binding and neutralization capability of two nAbs, STI-2020 and STI-5041, against the SARS-CoV-2 WA-1 strain as well as the Alpha and Beta variants. STI-2020 and STI-5041 were protective when administered intravenously or intranasally in the golden (Syrian) hamster model of COVID-19 challenged with the WA-1 strain or Beta variant. The ability to administer nAbs intravenously and intranasally may have important therapeutic implications and Phase 1 healthy subjects clinical trials are ongoing.

Aromatherapy is a natural treatment method that uses essential oils (EOs) extracted from aromatic plants; EOs and their components exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, with a special focus on their implementation toward mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to identify the scientific output and activity related to aromatherapy in anxiety, depression, and insomnia through bibliometric approaches. In this bibliometric study, we utilized CiteSpace and VOSviewer to evaluate the Web of Science Core Collection publications and to build visualizing maps to analyze the research progress on this topic between 2001 and 2021. A total of 1159 original and review articles in English, published in 578 different peer-reviewed journals by 260 authors, were identified. In the recent two decades, there was a steady increase in the number of published articles, especially in the following five years. All publications were distributed among 88 countries/regions. The United States had the most publications, with 188 (16.22%) articles, followed by China [131 (11.30%)], Brazil [110 (9.49%)], and Japan [85 (7.33%)]. Most studies were published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, and Physiology & Behavior was the most cited journal. Hritcu L was the top published scientist and Gupta SC was the most frequently co-cited. The knowledge base of this field research mainly included the related efficacy of aromatherapy/EOs, application status, and biochemical mechanism. And the keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed that the topics “oxidative stress,” “chemical composition,” “systematic review,” and “sleep quality” were research frontiers. In conclusion, this comprehensive bibliometric study provides an updated perspective on research hotspots of aromatherapy in anxiety or depression and developmental tendencies of natural remedies for mental health. In addition, this study could also provide valuable information for research teams, practitioners, and decision-makers when designing and implementing natural treatment methods for mental health-promoting interventions for individuals with mood disorders.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic, and recurring inflammatory skin disease. Physalis alkekengi L. var. franchetii (Mast) Makino (PAF), a traditional Chinese medicine, is primarily used for the clinical treatment of AD. In this study, a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced AD BALB/c mouse model was established, and a comprehensive pharmacological method was used to determine the pharmacological effects and molecular mechanisms of PAF in the treatment of AD. The results indicated that both PAF gel (PAFG) and PAFG+MF (mometasone furoate) attenuated the severity of AD and reduced the infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells in the skin. Serum metabolomics showed that PAFG combined with MF administration exerted a synergistic effect by remodeling metabolic disorders in mice. In addition, PAFG also alleviated the side effects of thymic atrophy and growth inhibition induced by MF. Network pharmacology predicted that the active ingredients of PAF were flavonoids and exerted therapeutic effects through anti-inflammatory effects. Finally, immunohistochemical analysis confirmed that PAFG inhibited the inflammatory response through the ERβ/HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway. Our results revealed that PAF can be used as a natural-source drug with good development prospects for the clinical treatment of AD.

Array-designed triboelectric nanogenerators (AD-TENGs) have firmly established themselves as state-of-the-art technologies for adeptly converting mechanical interactions into electrical signals. Central to the AD-TENG’s prowess is its inherent modularity and the multifaceted, grid-like design that pave the way to robust and adaptable detection platforms for wearables and real-time health monitoring systems. In this review, we aim to elucidate the quintessential role of array design in AD-TENGs for healthcare detection, emphasizing its ability to heighten sensitivity, spatial resolution, and dynamic monitoring while ensuring redundancy and simultaneous multi-detection. We begin from the fundamental aspects, such as working principles and design basis, then venture into methodologies for optimizing AD-TENGs that ensure the capture of intricate physiological changes, from nuanced muscle movements to sensitive electronic skin. After this, our exploration extends to the possible cutting-edge electronic systems that are built with specific advantages in filtering noise, magnifying signal-to-noise ratios, and interpreting complex real-time datasets on the basis of AD-TENGs. Culminating our discourse, we highlight the challenges and prospective pathways in the evolution of array-designed AD-TENGs, stressing the necessity to refine their sensitivity, adaptability, and reliability to perfectly align with the exacting demands of contemporary healthcare diagnostics.

In the constantly evolving field of medical diagnostics, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) stand out as a groundbreaking innovation for simultaneously harnessing mechanical energy from micromovements and sensing stimuli from both the human body and the ambient environment. This advancement diminishes the dependence of biosensors on external power sources and paves the way for the application of TENGs in self-powered medical devices, especially in the realm of point-of-care diagnostics. In this review, we delve into the functionality of TENGs in point-of-care diagnostics. First, from the basic principle of how TENGs effectively transform subtle physical movements into electrical energy, thereby promoting the development of self-powered biosensors and medical devices that are particularly advantageous for real-time biological monitoring. Then, the adaptable design of TENGs that facilitate customization to meet individual patient needs is introduced, with a focus on their biocompatibility and safety in medical applications. Our in-depth analysis also covers TENG-based biosensor designs moving toward exceptional sensitivity and specificity in biomarker detection, for accurate and efficient diagnoses. Challenges and future prospects such as the integration of TENGs into wearable and implantable devices are also discussed. We aim for this review to illuminate the burgeoning field of TENG-based intelligent devices for continuous, real-time health monitoring; and to inspire further innovation in this captivating area of research that is in line with patient-centered healthcare.

BackgroundIn light of the potentially detrimental effects of central fat and decreased muscle mass on cognitive function, it would be beneficial to learn more about the mediating mechanisms underpinning the association between the two. The purpose of this study is to determine the association between waist-to-calf circumstance ratio (WCR) and cognitive function, as well as to investigate whether physical performance and social activity mediate the relationship between WCR and cognitive function among older Chinese adults.MethodsAn analysis of 9,652 older Chinese adults was conducted during the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a self-reported scale were used to measure cognitive function, physical performance, and social activity, respectively. Multiple linear regression and mediation analyses were conducted.ResultsThe findings suggest that a high WCR had a significant negative association with cognitive function (B = −0.535, 95% CI: −0.754, −0.317). Mediation analysis revealed that a high WCR influenced old adults' cognitive function in three ways: first, through the partial mediating effect of physical performance (B = −0.270; 95% CI: −0.340, −0.203); second, through the partial mediating effect of social activity (B = −0.035; 95% CI: −0.055, −0.017); and third, through the serial mediating effects of physical performance and social activity (B = −0.021, 95% CI: −0.029, −0.015).ConclusionThe study results suggest the adverse impact of a high WCR on older adults' cognitive function, and the possible mechanisms of physical performance and social activity by which the association takes place. Multidimensional health and social interventions aimed at improving physical, social, and cognitive functioning among older adults with sarcopenic obesity are recommended.

BackgroundGiven the potentially negative effects of hearing loss on mental health and cognitive function, it is critical to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. This study aimed to investigate the moderating effects of social relationships, including their components in the role of depressive symptoms as a mediator between hearing loss and cognitive impairment.MethodsCross-sectional analyses were conducted with 8,094 Chinese older adults (aged ≥65 years) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey in 2018. Simple mediation analysis and moderated mediation analysis were conducted to examine the roles of depressive symptoms and social relationships in the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment.ResultsThere is a significant correlation between hearing loss, depressive symptoms, social relationships, and cognitive function. Depressive symptoms partially mediated the association between hearing loss and cognitive function [standardized regression B-coefficient (B) = −0.114; 95% confidence interval (CI): (−0.158, −0.076)]. Social relationships moderated the effect of hearing loss on cognitive function through both path b (depressive symptoms - cognitive function) [B = 0.021; 95% CI: (0.008, 0.034)], and path c’ (hearing loss-cognitive function) [B = 0.597; 95% CI: (0.463, 0.730)]. Furthermore, social activities and social networks moderated both the direct and indirect effects of moderated mediation. However, there appeared to be no moderated effect of social support for both the direct and indirect paths.ConclusionSocial relationships moderated both the direct and indirect effects of depressive symptoms on the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. These findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in Chinese older adults. It might be worthwhile to recommend multidimensional health and social interventions aimed at improving mental health and social inclusion among older adults with hearing loss.

Energy storage devices such as supercapacitors (SCs), if equipped with built-in energy harvesters such as piezoelectric nanogenerators, will continuously power wearable electronics and become important enablers of the future Internet of Things. As wearable gadgets become flexible, energy items that can be fabricated with greater compliance will be crucial, and designing them with sustainable and flexible strategies for future use will be important. In this review, flexible supercapacitors designed with built-in nanogenerators, mainly piezoelectric nanogenerators, are discussed in terms of their operational principles, device configuration, and material selection, with a focus on their application in flexible wearable electronics. While the structural design and materials selection are highlighted, the current shortcomings and challenges in the emerging field of nanogenerators that can be integrated into flexible supercapacitors are also discussed to make wearable devices more comfortable and sustainable. We hope this work may provide references, future directions, and new perspectives for the development of electrochemical power sources that can charge themselves by harvesting mechanical energy from the ambient environment.

The rapid development of smart devices and electronic products puts forward higher requirements for power supply components. As a promising solution, hybrid energy harvesters that are based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (HEHTNG) show advantages of both high energy harvesting efficiency and multifunctionality. Aiming to systematically elaborate the latest research progress of a HEHTNG, this review starts by introducing its working principle with a focus on the combination of triboelectric nanogenerators with various other energy harvesters, such as piezoelectric nanogenerators, thermoelectric/pyroelectric nanogenerators, solar cells, and electromagnetic nanogenerators. While the performance improvement and integration strategies of HEHTNG toward environmental energy harvesting are emphasized, the latest applications of HEHTNGs as multifunctional sensors in human health detection are also illustrated. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and prospects of HEHTNGs, hoping that this work can provide a clear direction for the future development of intelligent energy harvesting systems for the Internet of Things.

ObjectiveRelevant research focusing on young adults with Unipolar Depression (UD) and Bipolar Depression (BD) is limited. The current research aims to investigate childhood trauma and personality traits in young adults with UD and BD.MethodsTwo hundred and thirty-five patients in a first depressive episode (diagnosed UD and BD), 16–25 years old, were recruited from Second Xiangya Hospital. And 79 healthy controls (HC) were recruited from the community to form the comparison group. Patients' childhood trauma was measured by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and personality was measured by Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI). The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare depression, anxiety, CTQ, and EPI scores between the HC (n = 79), UD (n = 131), and BD (n = 104) groups. Factors independently associated with mood disorders and BD were determined using binary logistic regression analyses.ResultsCompared with HC, mood disorders had more severe anxiety and depression symptoms, and higher CTQ. Emotional abuse (OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.08–2.01), emotional neglect (OR = 1.24; 95% CI = 1.05–1.46), and neuroticism (OR = 1.25; 95% CI = 1.16–1.35) were associated with significantly increased odds of mood disorders. Whereas, higher extraversion scores were a protective factor for mood disorders. Compared with UD, BD had more severe anxiety symptoms, and higher CTQ, than extraversion and neuroticism personality scores. Anxiety (OR = 1.06; 95% CI = 1.02–1.08) and extraversion (OR = 1.05; 95% CI = 1.03–1.09) were associated with significantly increased odds of BD.ConclusionInterventions to prevent childhood trauma may improve young adults' mental health. Using childhood trauma and personality to anticipate BD and UD creates more accurate treatment for young adults with first depression.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between academic stress, school bullying and self-harm behaviors among Chinese middle school students and to further explore the impact of anxiety and depression on this relationship.MethodsThe students (aged 12–16 years) in a middle school in Changsha city were invited to respond to a questionnaire through an online platform. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were used to assess the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. The experience of being bullied, academic stress, and self-harm behaviors were assessed using several questions on the basis of previous studies.ResultsA total of 1,313 middle school students completed the study, and 3.40% and 4.10% of them reported suicide attempts (SAs) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that anxiety symptoms (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.18–1.28; OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.19–1.31), depressive symptoms (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.16–1.25; OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.20–1.31), school bullying (OR = 3.8, 95% CI: 2.11–6.89; OR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.39–5.47), and academic stress (OR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.27–3.80; OR = 3.80, 95% CI: 1.20–7.25) were common factors of NSSI and SAs. In addition, depressive symptoms showed a mediating effect on the association of school bullying and academic stress with SAs or NSSI, and anxiety symptoms showed a mediating effect on the association of school bullying and academic stress with NSSI only.ConclusionAppropriate strategies are needed to reduce academic pressure and prevent school bullying. Meanwhile, negative emotions such as depression and anxiety should be evaluated and intervened in to prevent self-harm behaviors among middle school students.

With the regular development of the global epidemic, the global port shipping supply is tight. The problem of port congestion, soaring freight rates, and hard-to-find container space has emerged. This paper proposes a new joint berth-quay crane allocation model, namely E-B&QC, by taking the minimum of the time in the port of the ship, the cost of extra transportation distance for collector trucks in the land area of the port, and the cost of extra waiting time for ships. Then, the deficiencies of the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) are considered in solving the E-B&QC model, and the SSA is improved based on the three-dimensional Cat chaos mapping and quantum computing theory. Chaotic Quantum Sparrow Search Algorithm (CQSSA) is proposed, population individual coding rules are formulated, also E-B&QC model solving algorithm is established. Finally, a new berth-crane allocation optimization method, namely, E-B&QC-CQSSA, is proposed. Subsequently, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed allocation model and solution algorithm are tested according to the actual data of a small river port in the south and a medium-sized river port in the north. Simulation examples show that the E-B&QC model can develop different high-quality solutions for container ports under different working conditions, and the more complex the actual situation of the port, the more significant the optimization effect. The proposed CQSSA for E-B&QC model can obtain a better solution.

Influenza virus-induced pneumonia (IVP) is a high morbidity and contagiousness pulmonary infectious disease caused by invasion of the influenza virus into the lower respiratory tract. Currently, the treatment of IVP is mainly based on an anti-influenza virus infection strategy, which includes the use of anti-influenza vaccines and drugs. However, the clinical use of these treatment options is limited as the influenza virus has a high level of variability and drug resistance may occur. Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) for the treatment of IVP have unique advantages, a variety of precise curative effects and have been widely used in clinical practice in China both historically and in the present day. However, there are only few literature reviews on the prevention and treatment of IVP using TCMs. Therefore, we conducted a review of relevant literature from the past 10 years and a comprehensive analysis of various databases containing reports on TCMs used for IVP prevention and treatment to provide basic data for future research and development of drugs against IVP. Herein, we summarize research progress on the pathogenesis of IVP, the TCMs effective in prevention or treatment of IVP, their underlying molecular mechanisms and active components. Overall, we provide a theoretical basis for the clinical use of TCM in the prevention and treatment of IVP. Furthermore, we provide a reference for the development of new multi-component, multi-target, low-toxicity drugs, which is of great academic and clinical significance.

Miniaturized four-dimensional (4D) micro/nanorobots denote a forerunning technique associated with interdisciplinary applications, such as in embeddable labs-on-chip, metamaterials, tissue engineering, cell manipulation, and tiny robotics. With emerging smart interactive materials, static micro/nanoscale architectures have upgraded to the fourth dimension, evincing time-dependent shape/property mutation. Molecular-level 4D robotics promises complex sensing, self-adaption, transformation, and responsiveness to stimuli for highly valued functionalities. To precisely control 4D behaviors, current-laser-induced photochemical additive manufacturing, such as digital light projection, stereolithography, and two-photon polymerization, is pursuing high-freeform shape-reconfigurable capacities and high-resolution spatiotemporal programming strategies, which challenge multi-field sciences while offering new opportunities. Herein, this review summarizes the recent development of micro/nano 4D laser photochemical manufacturing, incorporating active materials and shape-programming strategies to provide an envisioning of these miniaturized 4D micro/nanorobots. A comparison with other chemical/physical fabricated micro/nanorobots further explains the advantages and potential usage of laser-synthesized micro/nanorobots.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of pre- and post-treatment furosemide on reducing intravascular absorption syndrome in complex hysteroscopic leiomyoma surgery. Methods: This randomized controlled study enrolled 62 patients who underwent hysteroscopic leiomyoma surgery in Fuxing Hospital, Capital Medical University. Patients were randomly allocated to pre- and post-treatment furosemide groups. Information on patient age, body mass index, sum of the three diameters of the uterus, sum of diameter of submucosal myoma, and intimal thickness were recorded. The mean arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded at entry to the operating room, after anesthesia induction, at the end of operation, and after laryngeal mask pulled out. The duration of anesthesia, recovery time after withdrawal of anesthetic drug, amount of sufentanil, amount of propofol, amount of uterine perfusion fluid, the amount of perfusion fluid flowing out, the actual amount of fluid intake, the proportion of pulmonary diffuse B-line in perioperative period, and uterine perfusion pressure during operation were also recorded, together with postoperative adverse reactions (drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, chills). Results: No significant differences were observed between the pre- and post-treatment groups in terms of patient age, body mass index, sum of the three diameters of the uterus, sum of diameter of submucosal myoma, and intimal thickness. The mean arterial pressure and heart rate at the four different time points were not significantly different between the two groups, nor were there any significant differences in the duration of anesthesia, the amount of sufentanil, the amount of propofol, the amount of intrauterine perfusion fluid, the amount of perfusion fluid flowing out, the actual amount of fluid intake, the intrauterine perfusion pressure, or the incidence of postoperative drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. However, pre-treatment with furosemide was associated with a significantly reduced recovery time (p = 0.037) and incidence of postoperative chills (p = 0.032) compared to the post-treatment group. Furosemide significantly reduces the number of B-lines. Conclusions: Furosemide preconditioning can reduce the recovery time and occurrence of postoperative chills, both of which are conducive to better postoperative recovery. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have revolutionized energy harvesting and active sensing, holding tremendous potential in personalized healthcare, sustainable diagnoses, and green energy applications. In these scenarios, conductive polymers play a vital role in enhancing the performance of both TENG and TENG-based biosensors, enabling the development of flexible, wearable, and highly sensitive diagnostic devices. This review summarizes the impact of conductive polymers on TENG-based sensors, focusing on their contributions to triboelectric properties, sensitivity, detection limits, and wearability. We discuss various strategies for incorporating conductive polymers into TENG-based biosensors, promoting the creation of innovative and customizable devices tailored for specific healthcare applications. Additionally, we consider the potential of integrating TENG-based sensors with energy storage devices, signal conditioning circuits, and wireless communication modules, ultimately leading to the development of advanced, self-powered diagnostic systems. Finally, we outline the challenges and future directions in developing TENGs that integrate conducting polymers for personalized healthcare, emphasizing the need to improve biocompatibility, stability, and device integration for practical applications.

Background: Uterinecavernous hemangioma can cause persistent vaginal bleeding or massive hemorrhage and can lead to severe pregnancy complications. Case: A 23-year old woman with cutaneous hemangiomas presented for caesarean delivery of her second child nine days after successful delivery, she was admitted with severe postpartum hemorrhage and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A hysterectomy was performed as a result. The diagnosis of cavernous uterine hemangioma was made only on histopathological examination. In addition, an atypically extended period of refractory fibrinolytic hyperactivity developed after hysterectomy. Such extensive hyperfibrinolysis has not previously been reported in conjunction with hysterectomy. Conclusion: This case underscores the importance of cavernous uterine hemangioma as one of the causes of refractory uterine bleeding at the time of operation delivery. The definitive diagnosis can be made only on histological examination. Changes in the coagulation mechanism should be monitored closely during postpartum, and clinicians should be aware of the possibility of fibrinolytic hyperactivity.

Abstract Background Arterial stiffness is an independent cardiovascular risk factor. However, the association between sodium/potassium intake and vascular stiffness was inconsistent. Therefore, a large community-based cross-sectional study was performed to try and achieve more definitive conclusion. Methods Urinary sodium, potassium, and creatinine levels were tested in spot urine samples during physical examinations of each recruited participant. The 24-h estimated urinary sodium excretion (eUNaE) and estimated urinary potassium excretion (eUKE) levels were determined using the Kawasaki formula (used as a surrogate for intake). Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaques were measured using ultrasound. Results In 13,523 subjects aged 18–80 years, the relationships between carotid plaques and IMT with eUNaE, eUKE and their ratios were analyzed. Overall, 30.2% of participants were diagnosed with carotid artery plaques. The ratio of estimated sodium vs. potassium excretion (Na/K ratio) of the individuals with carotid artery plaques was significantly higher than that of participants without plaque (2.14 ± 0.73 vs. 2.09 ± 0.61, P

Background: Bovine mammary fibrosis is characteristic of chronic in injury in response to diverse pathogens. Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) is a frequent cause of mastitis in bovine and is prone to persistent infection. Diverse studies have shown MMPs/TIMPs and uPA system as a potent target for the treatment of fibrosis. However, pathogenesis of S. aureus-induced mammary fibrosis has not been completely defined. Methods: BMFBs treated with heat-inactivated S. aureus (105, 106, and 108 CFU/mL) for 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. Total RNA and protein were isolated from the treatments and controls of BMFBs samples. MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, MMP-13, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, COL Ⅰ, uPA, uPAR and PAI-1 gene and protein expression were examined by RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis. Gelatin zymography assay was performed to assess the levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 enzyme secreted. Results: BMFBs treated with heat-inactivated S. aureus increased mRNA and protein expression levels of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9 and MMP-13, and heat-inactivated S. aureus induced TIMP-1, TIMP-2 and COL Ⅰ expression. There was a clear activation of MMP-2 in the presence of heat-inactivated S. aureus in the conditioned medium from the BMFBs, whereas MMP-9 was no significantly altered. Moreover, uPA system was activated in BMFBs to S. aureus. Conclusion: Activation of the uPA system together with its impact on the MMPs levels could play a significant role in S. aureus-induced BMFBs with mechanism of ECM metabolism, MMPs/TIMPs and uPA system could participate in bovine mammary fibrosis.

There has been an increasing demand for bioengineered blood vessels for utilization in both regenerative medicine and drug screening. However, the availability of a true bioengineered vascular graft remains limited. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting presents a potential approach for fabricating blood vessels or vascularized tissue constructs of various architectures and sizes for transplantation and regeneration. In this review, we summarize the basic biology of different blood vessels, as well as 3D bioprinting approaches and bioink designs that have been applied to fabricate vascular and vascularized tissue constructs, with a focus on small-diameter blood vessels.

Abstract Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a relatively rare subtype of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. To identify molecular biomarkers in MCL, we performed immunohistochemistry tissue arrays using biopsies from 64 MCL patients diagnosed in West China Hospital from 2012 to 2016. TP53 mutation status in those patients was also examined by sequencing. The sequencing results showed TP53 mutations were highly heterogeneous in MCL. We identified four novel TP53 mutations in MCL: P151R, G199R, V218E, and G325R. The MCL patients with TP53 mutations had inferior progression-free survival (PFS, p = 0.002) and overall survival (OS, p = 0.011). Tissue array results showed the expression of p53, Sox11, or Pax5 alone did not correlate with the patient PFS and OS. However, the MCL patients with triple-positive expression of p53/Sox11/Pax5 had inferior PFS (p = 0.008) and OS (p = 0.002). Such risk stratification was independent to the mantle cell lymphoma international prognostic index (MIPI), Ki-67 value, and TP53 mutation status of the patients. The triple-positive patients might represent a subtype of high-risk MCL. Our findings might indicate a novel way to stratify MCL and predict patients’ prognosis.

BackgroundHashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) frequently occurs among autoimmune diseases and may simultaneously appear with thyroid cancer. However, it is difficult to diagnose HT at an early stage just by clinical symptoms. Thus, it is urgent to integrate multiple clinical and laboratory factors for the early diagnosis and risk prediction of HT.MethodsWe recruited 1,303 participants, including 866 non-HT controls and 437 diagnosed HT patients. 44 HT patients also had thyroid cancer. Firstly, we compared the difference in thyroid goiter degrees between controls and patients. Secondly, we collected 15 factors and analyzed their significant differences between controls and HT patients, including age, body mass index, gender, history of diabetes, degrees of thyroid goiter, UIC, 25-(OH)D, FT3, FT4, TSH, TAG, TC, FPG, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Thirdly, logistic regression analysis demonstrated the risk factors for HT. For machine learning modeling of HT and thyroid cancer, we conducted the establishment and evaluation of six models in training and test sets.ResultsThe degrees of thyroid goiter were significantly different among controls, HT patients without cancer (HT-C), and HT patients with thyroid cancer (HT+C). Most factors had significant differences between controls and patients. Logistic regression analysis confirmed diabetes, UIC, FT3, and TSH as important risk factors for HT. The AUC scores of XGBoost, LR, SVM, and MLP models indicated appropriate predictive power for HT. The features were arranged by their importance, among which, 25-(OH)D, FT4, and TSH were the top three high-ranking factors.ConclusionsWe firstly analyzed comprehensive factors of HT patients. The proposed machine learning modeling, combined with multiple factors, are efficient for thyroid diagnosis. These discoveries will extensively promote precise diagnosis, personalized therapies, and reduce unnecessary cost for thyroid diseases.

Today, pool boiling heat transfer (HT) plays an important role in many industries and engineering systems. This study investigates the effect of factors such as cross-sectional area and the number of Fe nanoparticles (NPs) on pool boiling HT of water/Fe nanofluid (NF) in a microchannel. This research is performed using the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. For this research, quantities such as maximum density, velocity, temperature, heat flux (HF) and phase change time are investigated. The results indicate that increasing the number of NPs reduces the phase-change duration. Adding the NPs to the base fluid improves the pool boiling HT. By reducing the cross-sectional area of the microchannel from 0.25 μm2 to 0.09 μm2, the HF increases, and as a result, the pool boiling HT occurs at a higher rate. So, reducing the cross-sectional area decreases the phase-change duration from 0.33 to 0.30 ns. NPs due to the increase in HT surface, increase in effective thermal conductivity and uniformity of temperature changes in the base fluid leads to a very large increase in the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Finally, it is expected that using these simulations, optimization of water/Fe NF behavior to enhance the pool boiling HT in micro-scale (microchannels) and nanoscale applications is done.

Ginsenoside Rc (GRc), an active component isolated from ginseng, has been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, the potential mechanism of its effect on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is not reported. The present study established the RA model by injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant in the hind paw. GRc was administrated by gavage daily. The results showed that GRc ameliorated the swelling rate of both hind paws and reduced the arthritis score in rats. Meanwhile, GRc inhibited cartilage damage and inflammatory cell infiltration in the joint tissue. Furthermore, GRc significantly decreased the concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the joint tissue of rats. Additionally, GRc downregulated the NF-κB signaling pathway. In conclusion, these findings show that GRc remarkably reduced cartilage damage and inflammatory response in the RA rat model by inhibiting of NF-κB signaling pathway.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are characterized by progressive degeneration and necrosis of neurons, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease and others. There are no existing therapies that correct the progression of these diseases, and current therapies provide merely symptomatic relief. The use of polysaccharides has received significant attention due to extensive biological activities and application prospects. Previous studies suggest that the polysaccharides as a candidate participate in neuronal protection and protect against NDs. In this review, we demonstrate that various polysaccharides mediate NDs, and share several common mechanisms characterized by autophagy, apoptosis, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction in PD and AD. Furthermore, this review reveals potential role of polysaccharides in vitro and in vivo models of NDs, and highlights the contributions of polysaccharides and prospects of their mechanism studies for the treatment of NDs. Finally, we suggest some remaining questions for the field and areas for new development.

BackgroundOAS gene family plays an important role in antiviral process, but its role in pancreatic cancer has not yet been studied.MethodsWe analyzed the expression, prognostic value and biological function of the OAS gene family in human pancreatic cancer through comprehensive bioinformatic analysis and cellular level validation.ResultsOAS family was highly expressed in pancreatic cancer, and this high expression significantly affected the clinical stage and prognosis of the tumor. OAS gene family was closely related to the immune infiltration of pancreatic cancer, especially neutrophils and dendritic cells, and many immune-related factors and pathways are enriched in the tumor, such as type I interferon signaling pathway and NOD-like receptor signaling pathway.ConclusionTaken together, high expression of OAS family is closely related to poor prognosis of pancreatic cancer. OAS gene family may serve as the biomarker and even therapeutic target of pancreatic cancer.

AIM: To detect the visual dysfunction, and investigate the changes of Tau and its phosphorylated Ser396/Ser404 forms in retinas and optic nerves in traumatic optic neuropathy(TON)model rats by using FVEP technique.METHODS: Totally 30 SD rats were conducted FVEP electrode implantation. One week later, all rates were implemented TON operation with the optic nerve of left eye crushed and the optic nerve of right eye exposed(sham-operated). FVEP detections were performed respectively in these TON model rats at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28d post crush, with 5 rats tested at each time point. After FVEP tests were taken, rats were sacrificed and then retinas and optic nerves of left eyes were separated for detecting the expression levels of Tau and pTau-Ser396/404 by Western Blot.RESULTS: Typical FVEP waves were observed in the sham-operated eyes. Compared to the sham group, the N2 waves were significantly delayed and the amplitude of N2-P2 were greatly reduced at each time point in the operation eyes. However, the differences of N2 wave and the amplitude reduction of N2-P2 were not significant at each time point after crush. The contents of total Tau protein in retinas of TON rats sharply decreased at 1d post crush, briefly recovered at 7d post crush, and remained a slightly lower level than normal condition till 28d. The changes of pTau-Ser396/404 were consistent with the changes of total Tau in retains and the Ser396 was the main phosphorylation site. However, the total Tau contents in optic nerves of TON rats increased gradually, and peaked at the 14d post crush and remained till 28d. The changes of pTau-Ser396/404 were similar to the changes of total Tau in optic nerves, which peaked at 7d post crush. However, Ser404 was the main phosphorylation site of Tau in optic nerves.CONCLUSION: The related indexes of N2 and P2 waves in FVEP can be used to detect the visual dysfunction in TON rats. After TON, the content changes of total Tau in retinas and optic nerves were much different while the changes of pTau-Ser396/404 followed the alterations of total Tau in the two locations. However, the main phosphorylation site of Tau was differnet according to the locations.

Abstract Aim To investigate the relationship of small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) to carotid artery intima-media thickness (CA-IMT) and carotid plaque (CAP) in Chinese general population, and to evaluate whether sdLDL-C could be an independent risk factor for individuals with subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 729 subjects were randomly collected from consecutive individuals from April 2019 to April 2020 for an annual health checkup. CA-IMT > 1.0 mm was defined as abnormal IMT. Plaque stability was measured by ultrasound examination based on the property of the echo. And sdLDL-C levels were detected by LipoPrint system. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with CA-IMT and carotid plaque. The growing demand for sustainable and efficient energy harvesting and storage technologies has spurred interest in the integration of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with supercapacitors (SCs). This combination offers a promising solution for powering Internet of Things (IoT) devices and other low−power applications by utilizing ambient mechanical energy. Cellular materials, featuring unique structural characteristics such as high surface−to−volume ratios, mechanical compliance, and customizable properties, have emerged as essential components in this integration, enabling the improved performance and efficiency of TENG−SC systems. In this paper, we discuss the key role of cellular materials in enhancing TENG−SC systems’ performance through their influence on contact area, mechanical compliance, weight, and energy absorption. We highlight the benefits of cellular materials, including increased charge generation, optimized energy conversion efficiency, and adaptability to various mechanical sources. Furthermore, we explore the potential for lightweight, low−cost, and customizable cellular materials to expand the applicability of TENG−SC systems in wearable and portable devices. Finally, we examine the dual effect of cellular materials’ damping and energy absorption properties, emphasizing their potential to protect TENGs from damage and increase overall system efficiency. This comprehensive overview of the role of cellular materials in the integration of TENG−SC aims to provide insights into the development of next−generation sustainable energy harvesting and storage solutions for IoT and other low−power applications.

The ever-growing interest in wearable electronic devices has unleashed a strong demand for sustainable and flexible power sources that are represented by the combination of flexible energy harvesting with storage devices/technologies. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), which harvest mechanical energy and charge their matching supercapacitors (SCs), may form a distributed power system with flexibility to tap their potential applications in powering wearable electronic devices. This review aims to cover the recent progress in the integration of TENG with flexible SC in terms of operation principle, material selection, device configuration and power management, with an accent on the application scenario in flexible wearable electronics. Further, the current shortcomings, challenges and new prospects for future developments in the emerging field of integrated flexible TENG-SCs for self-powered wearable electronics are discussed.

Piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (P-TENGs) have emerged as promising technologies for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, with potential applications in self-powered wearable and environmental monitoring devices. Modular design in P-TENGs, characterized by the flexible assembly and customization of device components, enables the development of sustainable and versatile chemical sensors. In this review, we focus on the role of modularity in P-TENG-based chemical sensing, discussing how it enhances design flexibility, sensing versatility, scalability, and integration with other technologies. We explore the various strategies for functionalizing P-TENGs with specific recognition elements, facilitating selective and sensitive detection of target chemicals such as gases, biochemicals, or biomolecules. Furthermore, we examine the integration of modular P-TENGs with energy storage devices, signal conditioning circuits, and wireless communication modules, highlighting the potential for creating advanced, self-powered sensing systems. Finally, we address the challenges and future directions in the development of modular P-TENG-based chemical sensors (PCS and TCS), emphasizing the importance of improving selectivity, stability, and reproducibility for practical applications.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered considerable interest as a promising technology for energy harvesting and stimulus sensing. While TENGs facilitate the generation of electricity from micro-motions, the modular design of TENG-based modular sensing systems (TMSs) also offers significant potential for powering biosensors and other medical devices, thus reducing dependence on external power sources and enabling biological processes to be monitored in real time. Moreover, TENGs can be customised and personalized to address individual patient needs while ensuring biocompatibility and safety, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and security of diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we concentrate on recent advancements in the modular design of TMSs for clinical applications with an emphasis on their potential for personalised real-time diagnosis. We also examine the design and fabrication of TMSs, their sensitivity and specificity, and their capabilities of detecting biomarkers for disease diagnosis and monitoring. Furthermore, we investigate the application of TENGs to energy harvesting and real-time monitoring in wearable and implantable medical devices, underscore the promising prospects of personalised and modular TMSs in advancing real-time diagnosis for clinical applications, and offer insights into the future direction of this burgeoning field.

Smart responsive materials can react to external stimuli via a reversible mechanism and can be directly combined with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to deliver various intelligent applications, such as sensors, actuators, robots, artificial muscles, and controlled drug delivery. Not only that, mechanical energy in the reversible response of innovative materials can be scavenged and transformed into decipherable electrical signals. Because of the high dependence of amplitude and frequency on environmental stimuli, self-powered intelligent systems may be thus built and present an immediate response to stress, electrical current, temperature, magnetic field, or even chemical compounds. This review summarizes the recent research progress of smart TENGs based on stimulus-response materials. After briefly introducing the working principle of TENG, we discuss the implementation of smart materials in TENGs with a classification of several sub-groups: shape-memory alloy, piezoelectric materials, magneto-rheological, and electro-rheological materials. While we focus on their design strategy and function collaboration, applications in robots, clinical treatment, and sensors are described in detail to show the versatility and promising future of smart TNEGs. In the end, challenges and outlooks in this field are highlighted, with an aim to promote the integration of varied advanced intelligent technologies into compact, diverse functional packages in a self-powered mode.

Triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted extensive attention in energy harvesting due to its light weight, low cost, high flexibility, and diversity of function. However, deterioration in terms of mechanical durability and electrical stability of the triboelectric interface during operation, which are the results of material abrasion, severely limits their practical applications. In this paper, a durable triboelectric nanogenerator inspired by a ball mill was designed by using metal balls in hollow drums as carriers for charge generation and transfer. Composite nanofibers were deposited onto the balls, increasing the triboelectrification with the interdigital electrodes in the inner surface of the drum for higher output and electrostatic repulsion to each other for lower wear. Such a rolling design cannot only increase mechanical durability and maintenance convenience, where the filler can be easily replaced and recycled but also collect wind power with the decreased wearing of materials and sound efficiency in comparison with the typical rotation TENG. In addition, the short circuit current shows a strong linear relationship with the rotation speed in a wide range, which can be used to detect wind speed, thus showing potential applications in distributed energy conversion and self-powered environmental monitoring systems.
