Abstract

Nonsuspended sediment transport (NST) refers to the sediment transport regime in which the flow turbulence is unable to support the weight of transported grains. It occurs in fluvial environments (i.e., driven by a stream of liquid) and in aeolian environments (i.e., wind-blown) and plays a key role in shaping sedimentary landscapes of planetary bodies. NST is a highly fluctuating physical process because of turbulence, surface inhomogeneities, and variations of grain size and shape and packing geometry. Furthermore, the energy of transported grains varies strongly due to variations of their flow exposure duration since their entrainment from the bed. In spite of such variability, we here propose a deterministic model that represents the entire grain motion, including grains that roll and/or slide along the bed, by a periodic saltation motion with rebound laws that describe an average rebound of a grain after colliding with the bed. The model simultaneously captures laboratory and field measurements and discrete element method (DEM)-based numerical simulations of the threshold and rate of equilibrium NST within a factor of about 2, unifying weak and intense transport conditions in oil, water, and air (oil only for threshold). The model parameters have not been adjusted to these measurements but determined from independent data sets. Recent DEM-based numerical simulations (Comola, Gaume, et al., 2019, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GL082195) suggest that equilibrium aeolian NST on Earth is insensitive to the strength of cohesive bonds between bed grains. Consistently, the model captures cohesive windblown sand and windblown snow conditions despite not explicitly accounting for cohesion.

14. Exchange Mechanism of the Suspended Sediment at the Mouth of Hangzhou Bay under Coastline Changes

Abstract

Based on FVCOM hydrodynamic numerical model and coastline topographic data in 2013, a three-dimensional numerical model of fine sediment transport in Hangzhou Bay has been established to explore the water and sediment exchange mechanism between Hangzhou Bay and the open sea at different typical sections. The results of validation with measured and satellite retrieved data show that the model can well simulate the process of water and sediment movement in Hangzhou Bay. Compared with the calculation results of the coastline topographic data of Hangzhou Bay in 1974 and 2020, the influence mechanism of shoreline change on the water and sediment exchange mechanism between Hangzhou Bay and the open sea has been studied. The results show that the sediment transport inside and outside the Hangzhou Bay is generally in the pattern of north-inflow and south-discharge. Compared with the coastline in 1974, the sediment transport from Yangshan port in the north of Hangzhou Bay and Zhoushan Islands in the middle of Hangzhou Bay increases when the coastline is pushed into the bay in 2020, while the outward sediment transport from Jintang Channel in the South decreases. The overall trend features that the sediment transport into the bay increases, with the bay mouth silting. In the three sections extending from Hangzhou Bay to the open sea, the inflowing water and sediment of the horizontal section on the north side is decreasing, while the discharged sediment from the south side and the inflowing water and discharged sediment from the vertical section at the east side are increasing.

15. The 'two-step' yielding process of the natural mud under steady and oscillatory shear stress

Abstract

The rheological properties of natural mud are closely related to nautical depth estimation, wave propagation, and morphology evolution of muddy coast. In this study, the rheological properties of the natural mud collected from Luxi Island and Zhoushan Island in China were investigated. Shear stresses in steady state or oscillatory state were imposed on mud samples directly to obtain the yielding process under tidal currents or waves. The results showed that both apparent viscosity and complex viscosity experienced two sharp declines with increasing shear stress, indicating a two-step yielding nature of natural mud. Two yield stresses, namely, static yield stress and fluidic yield stress correspond to the yielding processes of elasticity and viscosity breakdown, respectively. The static yield stress in the oscillatory shear stress tests was lower than that in the steady shear stress tests, and the fluidic yield stress of natural mud in oscillatory shear stress tests was higher than that in the steady shear stress tests. The above phenomenon was explained by the viscoelastic-oscillation theory. Furthermore, the experimental results indicated that the initial storage modulus had a closer connection to both yield stresses in comparison with mud density. This study not only provided a guideline for having a better understanding of the two-step yielding process of natural mud, but will also provide scientific support for the assessment of fluid-mud formation, sediment transport and morphology evolution, the interaction between waves or tidal currents and muddy seabed, and protection of seafloor infrastructures.

30. Foldable container in empty container repositioning in intermodal transportation network of Belt and Road Initiative: strengths and limitations.

Abstract

In 2013, the concept of the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (Belt and Road)’ was initiated by the Chinese government, which involves Asian, European and African continents and their adjacent seas. Logistics plays a core role in such a large framework of economy and trade. In recent years, China, European Union, and Southeast Asia pay much attention to the design and development of the intermodal transportation network towards both economic and environmental efficiency. In this paper, we propose an empty container repositioning model in the intermodal transportation network of Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative by considering both standard and foldable containers. In this model, empty containers are repositioned from the inland of the original area, such as China, to other areas of B&R Initiative related countries and regions, such as European Union and Southeast Asia. We develop a mixed integer linear programming model to determine the optimal repositioning of empty containers via the intermodal transportation network. An Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is developed to solve large size problems in practice and numerical experiments are conducted to show the efficiency of our proposed algorithm.
