14. A Multi-Input Noninterruptive MPPT Technique Based on FCPV Method for Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting

Abstract

This article presents a multi-input piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) with the multi-input series synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (MIS-SSHI) rectifier and noninterruptive maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. The proposed MPPT solution tracks the vibration states of multiple piezoelectric transducers (PZTs) using the fractional cumulative peak voltages method, ensuring the maximum power output for the MIS-SSHI rectifier. In addition, the proposed method captures the peak working voltages of multiple PZTs for MPPT without interrupting the energy harvesting process for open-circuit voltage detection. To validate the effectiveness of this multi-input PEH, an experimental platform is built for performance evaluation. The experiment results confirm the feasibility of the proposed MPPT solution for multi-input rectifiers, achieving a peak MPPT efficiency of up to 98%.

16. A Self-Powered BF and S-SSHI Hybrid Rectifier for Multi-PZTs Energy Harvesting

Abstract

A single vibration source equipped with multiple piezoelectric transducers (multi-PZTs) is a promising solution to harvest more power in real-life scenarios. However, few studies focus on the rectifiers for multi-PZTs energy harvesting, especially in hybrid rectifiers. In this article, a self-powered bias flip and series-synchronized switch harvesting on inductor hybrid rectifier is proposed for multi-PZTs energy harvesting. The proposed rectifier can handle the arbitrary inductor access conflictions issue between multi-PZTs and simultaneously extract energy from multi-PZTs with a shared inductor. Besides, a continuous maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method is adopted to relieve the load dependence of rectification performance without interrupting the energy extraction process. An experimental platform is built to evaluate the electrical performance of the proposed rectifier circuits. Experimental results show the implemented circuit can extract a peak power of 964.5 μW from two PZTs under an excitation of 30.5 Hz and has a MPPT efficiency of up to 97.3%. Compared with a multi-input standard energy harvesting rectifier, the proposed rectifier circuit can achieve a 484% power improvement.

21. A Novel Rectifier-Less Synchronous Electric Charge Extraction and Inversion Interface Circuit for PE Energy Harvesters

Abstract

A novel rectifier-less synchronous electric charge extraction and inversion (ReL-SECEI) interface circuit for Piezoelectric energy harvesters is proposed in this article. At the peak voltages of the Piezoelectric Transducer (PZT), a portion of electric charges is inverted on the clamped capacitance Cp, so that the PZT is automatically regulated at a higher output voltage state to improve extracted energy from the PZT. In addition, the self-powered implementation of the ReL-SECEI circuit is presented. It reduces the number of components by optimizing the positive and negative synchronous switches. The rectifier-less and simplified designs reduce the internal power loss and, hence, improve the energy harvesting efficiency. The ReL-SECEI circuit is verified by the experiment, the harvested power is load-dependent and the peak output power is obtained with the optimum load, which reaches 4.2 times that of the standard energy harvesting circuit.

Abstract

In this work, a self-powered tunable unipolar synchronized electric charge extraction (STU-SECE) interface circuit is proposed to harvest the maximum available power from the piezoelectric transducer which meets the condition of strong enough coupling (k 2Q ≥ π/2). It reveals the constraint equations about the parameters of modified electromechanical coupling coefficient, vibration angular frequency and tuning parameter should satisfy when STU-SECE harvests the maximum available power, and demonstrates how to use resistances to set the tuning parameter to control the charge extraction phase of the circuit. Simulation results show that STU-SECE can basically achieve the theoretical optimum in harvested power from the transducer. Experimental results show that the maximum harvested and output power of STU-SECE are increased by 11% and 7% compared to unipolar synchronized electric charge extraction (U-SECE), and are increased by 108% and 157% compared to SECE under the same conditions, which verify the effectiveness of the proposed STU-SECE circuit and the constraint equations.
