Abstract Background Lung cancer (LC) is currently the number one malignancy death rate disease in China, and its disease burden is serious. The study aimed to analyze trends of LC and its risk factor attributable disease in China from 1990 to 2019 and predict the next 41 years. Methods The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to analyze the trend of LC and its risk factor attributable incidence, deaths, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) rate in China from 1990 to 2019, collected in the Global Burden of Disease 2019. Cochran–Armitage trends examine trends in lung cancer disease burden by sex, age, and attributable risk factor groups in China from 1990 to 2019. In addition, based on data on death and DALYs rate due to LC and its risk factors between 1990 and 2019, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was developed to predict the change in the trend of burden of disease due to LC and its risk factors over the next 41 years, and the model was evaluated using the model parameters root mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error. Results From 1990 to 2019, the incidence, mortality and DALYs of LC were all increased. Among the eight risk factors associated with lung cancer, the DALYs rate and mortality rate of lung cancer risk factors for Chinese residents increased from 1990 to 2019, except for household air pollution from solid fuels and diet low in fruit, which showed a decrease; among them, the DALYs rate and mortality rate due to ambient particulate matter pollution showed the greatest increase with AAPC values of 2.880 and 3.310, respectively, while DALYs and mortality rates due to household air pollution from solid fuels showed the largest decreases, with AAPC values of −4.755 and −4.348, respectively. The results of the ARIMA model predictions show that both the mortality rate and the rate of DALYs for lung cancer are increasing yearly, and it is predicted that the rate of DALYs for lung cancer by 2060 will reach 740.095/100 000 and the mortality rate will reach 35.151/100 000. It is expected that by 2060, the top four risk factors for lung cancer in China will be, in order of DALYs rate and mortality rate, smoking, ambient particulate matter pollution, high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG), and secondhand smoke, with HFPG showing the greatest increase. Conclusions The LC burden increased from 1990 to 2019 in China, the LC burden that could be attributed to HFPG will continue to increase in the next 40 years, and will be the third most factor by 2060. Targeted interventions are warranted to facilitate the prevention of LC and improvement of health‐related quality of life patients with LC.

Abstract Background Body weight and its changes have been associated with cancer outcomes. However, the associations of short‐term peridiagnosis weight dynamics in standardized, clinically operational time frames with cancer survival remain largely unknown. This study aimed to screen for and evaluate the optimal indicator of short‐term peridiagnosis weight dynamics to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with cancer. Methods This multicentre cohort study prospectively collected data from 7460 patients pathologically diagnosed with cancer between 2013 and 2019. Body weight data were recorded 1 month before, at the time of and 1 month following diagnosis. By permuting different types (point value in kg, point height‐adjusted value in kg/m2, absolute change in kg or relative change in percentage) and time frames (prediagnosis, postdiagnosis or peridiagnosis), we generated 12 different weight‐related indicators and compared their prognostic performance using Harrell's C‐index, integrated discrimination improvement, continuous net reclassification improvement and time‐dependent C‐index. We analysed associations of peridiagnosis relative weight change (RWC) with OS using restricted cubic spine (RCS), Kaplan–Meier analysis and multivariable‐adjusted Cox regression models. Results The study enrolled 5012 males and 2448 females, with a median age of 59 years. During a median follow‐up of 37 months, 1026 deaths occurred. Peridiagnosis (1 month before diagnosis to 1 month following diagnosis) RWC showed higher prognostic performance (Harrell's C‐index = 0.601, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.583, 0.619]) than other types of indicators including body mass index (BMI), absolute weight change, absolute BMI change, prediagnosis RWC and postdiagnosis RWC in the study population (all P 10%, hazard ratio [HR] = 0.530, 95% CI = [0.413, 0.680]) and moderate (gain 5–10%, HR = 0.588, 95% CI = [0.422, 0.819]) weight gain groups were both associated with improved OS. In contrast, the moderate (loss 5–10%, HR = 1.219, 95% CI = [1.029, 1.443]) and significant (loss >10%, HR = 1.280, 95% CI = [1.095, 1.497]) weight loss groups were both associated with poorer OS. Conclusions The prognostic performance of peridiagnosis RWC is superior to other weight‐related indicators in patients with cancer. The findings underscore the importance of expanding the surveillance of body weight from at diagnosis to both past and future, and conducting it within clinically operational time frames, in order to identify and intervene with patients who are at risk of weight change‐related premature deaths.

Osimertinib, a third-generation inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase, exhibits remarkable efficacy in prolonging the survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) carrying EGFR mutations, surpassing the efficacy of first- and second-generation EGFR tyrosine kinases. Nevertheless, the emergence of osimertinib resistance is inevitable, necessitating an investigation into the underlying mechanisms. Increasing evidence has revealed that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs, long ncRNAs, and circular RNAs, play a significant role in the development and progression of lung cancer. These ncRNAs regulate essential signaling pathways, offering a novel avenue for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of osimertinib resistance. Recent studies have reported the significant impact of ncRNAs on osimertinib resistance, achieved through various mechanisms that modulate treatment sensitivity. We provide a concise overview of the functions and underlying mechanisms of extensively researched ncRNAs in the development of osimertinib resistance and emphasize their potential clinical application in EGFR-mutated NSCLC resistant to osimertinib. Finally, we discuss the obstacles that must be addressed to effectively translate ncRNA-based approaches into clinical practice.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia are the seventh leading cause of death. Studies discern the inclusion of air pollution among modifiable risk factors for dementia, while limited studies are for China. This study aims to examine the short-term association between airborne particulate matter (PM) and the hospitalizations of AD, including the economic costs in China. Methods A total of 4975 cases of AD patients hospitalized from 2017 to 2019, were collected from nine city and 411 medical institutions in Sichuan Province, China. Data on air pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were obtained from 183 air quality monitoring stations in Sichuan Province. A time series-generalized additive model was used to estimate the association between short-term exposure to PM (lag1–lag7 and moving average lag01–lag07) and AD hospital admissions (HAs), stratified by gender, age, and season. Results Positive short-term exposure to airborne PM was found for the HAs of AD. The greatest effect on the number of AD inpatients was on single-day lag1 (PM2.5:1.034 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.011, 1.058)). The association was also significant in the two-pollutant model. In the study period, 16.48% of AD HAs were attributed to the effect of PM. The total economic costs of AD attributable to PM exposure were US$ 2.56 million, including US$ 2.25 million of direct medical costs and US$ 0.31 million of indirect economic costs. Conclusions This study suggests that short-term exposure to airborne PM may increase the risk of AD HAs in Sichuan Province and result in associated economic costs.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of explicit information (EI) in the context of Processing Instruction (PI) as an alternative to traditional teaching methods. PI encompasses explicit information and structured input activity (SI). However, the effectiveness of EI has been a subject of debate. To address this question, grade-7 students were divided into three groups: the complete Processing Instruction group, the explicit information only group, and the structured input activity only group. Following pre-tests and the implementation of different teaching instructions on English passive voice, the scores of the participants were analyzed for the immediate post-test and delayed post-test. The results suggested that although EI did not accelerate the acquisition of the form-meaning connection of English passive voice, it was beneficial for final performance similar to SI. The complete Processing Instruction, however, proved to be the most effective. This study suggests a possible association between the effectiveness of EI and the relative difficulty of the target item for language learners.

Introduction: Glaucoma, a principal cause of irreversible vision loss, is characterized by intricate optic neuropathy involving significant immune mechanisms. This study seeks to elucidate the molecular and immune complexities of glaucoma, aiming to improve our understanding of its pathogenesis.Methods: Gene expression profiles from glaucoma patients were analyzed to identify immune-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Techniques used were weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) for network building, machine learning algorithms for biomarker identification, establishment of subclusters related to immune reactions, and single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) to explore hub genes’ relationships with immune cell infiltration and immune pathway activation. Validation was performed using an NMDA-induced excitotoxicity model and RT-qPCR for hub gene expression measurement.Results: The study identified 409 DEGs differentiating healthy individuals from glaucoma patients, highlighting the immune response’s significance in disease progression. Immune cell infiltration analysis revealed elevated levels of activated dendritic cells, natural killer cells, monocytes, and immature dendritic cells in glaucoma samples. Three hub genes, CD40LG, TEK, and MDK, were validated as potential diagnostic biomarkers for high-risk glaucoma patients, showing increased expression in the NMDA-induced excitotoxicity model.Discussion: The findings propose the three identified immune-related genes (IRGs) as novel diagnostic markers for glaucoma, offering new insights into the disease's pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets. The strong correlation between these IRGs and immune responses underscores the intricate role of immunity in glaucoma, suggesting a shift in the approach to its diagnosis and treatment.

Laser corneal refractive surgery is an effective way for the correction of myopia, and its long-term stability is a common concern of surgeons and patients. However, refractive regression is still one of the most common postoperative long-term complications, which has a great impact on postoperative refractive state and visual quality. Refractive regression may be related to many factors, such as the remodeling of corneal epithelium and stroma, and the imbalance between corneal biomechanics and intraocular pressure. Although enhancement surgery could be a useful way to correct refractive regression, there is a risk of corneal ectasia and other complications. Some intraocular pressure lowering medications can be used to rebuild the balance of intraocular pressure and corneal biomechanics, and to prevent postoperative refractive regression by affecting the thickness of corneal epithelium. To a certain extent, the type, the timing and the way of intraocular pressure lowering medications application may have an impact on the prevention and treatment effect of refractive regression.

To explore the size, morphology, and distribution patterns of internal pore defects in WE43 magnesium alloy formed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), as well as their impact on its mechanical properties, computer tomography (CT), metallographic microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe the material’s microstructure and the morphology of tensile test fractures. The study revealed that a large number of randomly distributed non-circular pore defects exist internally in the LPBF-formed WE43 magnesium alloy, with a defect volume fraction of 0.16%. Approximately 80% of the defects had equivalent diameters concentrated in the range of 10∼40 μm, and 56.2% of the defects had sphericity values between 0.65∼0.7 μm, with the maximum defect equivalent diameter being 122 μm. There were a few spherical pores around 20 μm in diameter in the specimens, and unfused powder particles were found in pore defects near the edges of the parts. Under the test conditions, the fusion pool structure of LPBF-formed WE43 magnesium alloy resembled a semi-elliptical shape with a height of around 66 μm, capable of fusion three layers of powder material in a single pass. Columnar grains formed at the edge of individual fusion pools, while the central area exhibited equiaxed grains. The “scale-like pattern” formed by overlapping fusion pool structures resulted in the microstructure of LPBF-formed WE43 magnesium alloy mainly consisting of fine equiaxed grains with a size of 2.5 μm and columnar grains distributed in a band-like manner.

The MC4-2 bacterium strain was isolated and purified from the Periplaneta americana intestine as a biocontrol agent with good antagonistic effect against the pathogens of a soil-borne disease called tobacco black shank. The MC4-2 strain was found to have good broad-spectrum inhibition by plate stand-off test. Based on 16S rRNA and gyrB genes, ANI analysis, and other comparative genomics methods, it was determined that the MC4-2 strain was Bacillus subtilis. The complete genome sequence showed that the genome size was 4,076,630 bp, the average GC content was 43.78%, and the total number of CDSs was 4,207. Genomic prediction analysis revealed that a total of 145 genes were annotated by the CAZy, containing mainly GH and CE enzymes that break down carbohydrates such as glucose, chitin, starch, and alginate, and a large number of enzymes involved in glycosylation were present. A total of ten secondary metabolite clusters were predicted, six clusters of which were annotated as surfactin, bacillaene, fengycin, bacillibactin, subtilosin A, and bacilysin. The present investigation found the biological control mechanism of B. subtilis MC4-2, which provides a strong theoretical basis for the best use of this strain in biological control methods and provides a reference for the subsequent development of agents of this bacterium.

The management of granulocytopenia-associated infections is challenging, and a high mortality rate is associated with traditional supportive therapies. Neutrophils—the primary defenders of the human immune system—have potent bactericidal capabilities. Here, we investigated the dynamic in vivo distribution of neutrophil transfusion and their impact on the treatment outcome of severe granulocytopenic infections. We transfused 89 Zr-labeled neutrophils in the C57BL/6 mice and observed the dynamic neutrophil distribution in mice for 24 h using the micro-positron emission tomography (Micro-PET) technique. The labeled neutrophils were predominantly retained in the lungs and spleen up to 4 h after injection and then redistributed to other organs, such as the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Neutrophil transfusion did not elicit marked inflammatory responses or organ damage in healthy host mice. Notably, allogeneic neutrophils showed rapid chemotaxis to the infected area of the host within 1 h. Tail vein infusion of approximately 10 7 neutrophils substantially bolstered host immunity, ameliorated the inflammatory state, and increased survival rates in neutrophil-depleted and infected mice. Overall, massive allogeneic neutrophil transfusion had a therapeutic effect in severe infections and can have extensive applications in the future.

BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the relationship between air pollution and hospital admissions for asthma in older adults, and to further assess the health and economic burden of asthma admissions attributable to air pollution.MethodsWe collected information on asthma cases in people over 65 years of age from nine cities in Sichuan province, as well as air pollution and meteorological data. The relationship between short-term air pollutant exposure and daily asthma hospitalizations was analyzed using the generalized additive model (GAM), and stratified by gender, age, and season. In addition, we assessed the economic burden of hospitalization for air pollution-related asthma in older adults using the cost of disease approach.ResultsThe single pollutant model showed that every 1 mg/m3 increase in CO was linked with an increase in daily hospitalizations for older adults with asthma, with relative risk values of 1.327 (95% CI: 1.116–1.577) at lag7. Each 10 μg/m3 increase in NO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5 and SO2, on asthma hospitalization, with relative risk values of 1.044 (95% CI: 1.011–1.078), 1.018 (95% CI: 1.002–1.034), 1.013 (95% CI: 1.004–1.022), 1.015 (95% CI: 1.003–1.028) and 1.13 (95% CI: 1.041–1.227), respectively. Stratified analysis shows that stronger associations between air pollution and asthma HAs among older adult in females, those aged 65–69 years, and in the warm season, although all of the differences between subgroups did not reach statistical significance. During the study period, the number of asthma hospitalizations attributable to PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 pollution was 764, 581 and 95, respectively, which resulted in a total economic cost of 6.222 million CNY, 4.73 million CNY and 0.776 million CNY, respectively.ConclusionThis study suggests that short-term exposure to air pollutants is positively associated with an increase in numbers of asthma of people over 65 years of age in Sichuan province, and short-term exposure to excessive PM and NO2 brings health and economic burden to individuals and society.

Abstract This paper investigates the effects of defects on tensile failure of additive manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy focusing particularly on the role of large pancake shaped loss of fusion (LOF) defects lying perpendicular to the build direction (BD). Time-lapse in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray micro-computed tomography during straining reveals how, when tested parallel to the BD, the LOF defects extend laterally with straining connecting to other defects and giving rise to low plasticity and an essentially brittle failure mode. When they are aligned edge-on to the straining direction, failure is characterised by a ductile cup-cone failure with significant elongation of the defects axially and extensive necking prior to failure. The soft fish-scale melt pool boundaries were also found to affect the fracture path. These results highlight the anisotropic effect of loss of fusion defects in controlling tensile ductility and the need to minimize their size and aspect ratio. In cases where these cannot be fully eliminated the component should be fabricated such that the BD is not aligned with the dominant in-service loading direction.

Abstract Chronic diabetic wounds are primarily caused by infection, inflammation, and angiogenesis-related disorders. An ideal approach for treating chronic diabetic wounds is by combining anti-infection strategies, immune microenvironment regulation, and angiogenesis promotion. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can promote the proliferation and migration of vascular endothelial cells, thereby promoting angiogenesis. However, the low stability and inability to target lesions limit its application. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil-derived exosomes (PMNExo) exhibit good delivery properties and can be used for the therapeutic delivery of VEGF. Furthermore, they retain the antibacterial ability of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). Nonetheless, low PMNExo generation impedes its therapeutic applications. In this study, we prepared exosome mimetics (EM) from PMNs using the extrusion process; as a result, exosome yield significantly improved. To increase the residence of exosomes, an extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogel, a thermosensitive material that can function as an in situ gel in vivo, was used as an exosome carrier. The active peptides in the ECM regulated the immune microenvironment of the wound. In summary, we loaded ECM with VEGF-encapsulated activated neutrophil exosome mimetics (aPMNEM) to develop VEGF–aPMNEM–ECM hybrid hydrogel for treating chronic wounds. The hydrogel accelerates the regeneration of chronic diabetic wounds. Our study provides a prospective therapy platform involving cytokines for treating different diseases. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Heterohelicenes are of increasing importance in the fields of materials science, molecular recognition, and asymmetric catalysis. However, enantioselective construction of these molecules, especially by organocatalytic methods, is challenging, and few methods are available. In this study, we synthesize enantioenriched 1-(3-indol)-quino[n]helicenes through chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed Povarov reaction followed by oxidative aromatization. The method has a broad substrate scope and offers rapid access to an array of chiral quinohelicenes with enantioselectivities up to 99%. Additionally, the photochemical and electrochemical properties of selected quinohelicenes are explored.

Abstract Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, resulting in serious cardiovascular diseases. Air pollution may cause heart rate disturbance, but there is no clear or consistent evidence that short-term exposure to air pollution leads to an increased risk of hospitalisation for symptomatic episodes of AF. This study aimed to assess the impact of short-term exposure to air pollution on inpatient numbers. Methods The inpatient records of AF cases in nine cities of the Sichuan Province, China and air pollution and meteorological data from 183 monitoring stations from 2017 to 2018 were collected. The impact of short-term exposure to air pollution on AF inpatients was evaluated using a time-stratified crossover case study design. The economic burden of AF attributable to air pollution was also estimated. Results A total of 5,958 patients with AF from 123 medical institutions were included in the analysis. Air pollutants had a significant impact on the number of patients with AF. The number increased by 2.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.006 to 1.044) and 1.8% (95% CI = 1.003–1.033) for every 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5, PM10, concentration, respectively. Moreover, the number increased by 12.7% (95% CI = 1.006 to 1.262) for every 10 µg/m3 increase of SO2 concentration. For every 0.1 μg/m3 increase in CO concentration, the number of inpatients with AF increased by 3.9% (95% CI = 1.010–1.070). People aged 65 years or older and women were more likely to be affected by air pollutants. The AF in 430 and 209 inpatients were attributable to PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. The total hospitalization expenses attributed to excessive exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 were 13.98 million CNY and 6.68 million CNY, respectively. Furthermore, the out-of-pocket expenses were 6.81 million CNY and 3.28 million CNY, respectively. Conclusions This study showed a strong correlation between air pollution and AF. Hence, there is a need to reduce air pollution to control health risks.

Abstract Background There are few studies on the effects of air pollutants on acute lower respiratory tract infections (ALRI) in children. Here, we investigated the relationship of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with the daily number of hospitalizations for ALRI in children in Sichuan Province, China, and to estimate the economic burden of disease due to exposure to air pollutants. Methods We collected records of 192,079 cases of childhood ALRI hospitalization between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018 from nine municipal/prefecture medical institutions as well as the simultaneous meteorological and air pollution data from 183 monitoring sites in Sichuan Province. A time series-generalized additive model was used to analyze exposure responses and lagged effects while assessing the economic burden caused by air pollutant exposure after controlling for long-term trends, seasonality, day of the week, and meteorological factors. Results Our single-pollutant model shows that for each 10 μg/m3 increase in air pollutant concentration (1 μg/m3 for SO2), the effect estimates of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2 for pneumonia reached their maximum at lag4, lag010, lag010, and lag07, respectively, with relative risk (RR) values of 1.0064 (95% CI, 1.0004–1.0124), 1.0168(95% CI 1.0089–1.0248), 1.0278 (95% CI 1.0157–1.0400), and 1.0378 (95% CI, 1.0072–1.0692). By contrast, the effect estimates of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2 for bronchitis all reached their maximum at lag010, with RRs of 1.0133 (95% CI 1.0025–1.0242), 1.0161(95% CI 1.0085–1.0238), 1.0135 (95% CI 1.0025–1.0247), and 1.1133(95% CI 1.0739–1.1541). Leaf spring calipers are a kind of pipe detector that installs strain gauges on the detecting arm, and the strain gauges measure the geometrical dimensions of the inner wall of the pipe by detecting the bending strain of the leaf spring and the sensors of the leaf spring caliper are set up on the detecting arm, so it has higher detecting accuracy and smaller structural dimensions. Leaf spring calipers are widely used because of their outstanding advantages, but their detection arms are worn out, and their detection accuracy increases with the detection distance. In this paper, we establish a wear model of the detection arm for the operation of the leaf spring caliper in crude oil and refined product pipelines, and according to the model, we build a wear test system for the detection arm. The wear test system of the inspection arm simulates the wear between the inspection arm made of G61500 (UNIFIED NUMBERING SYSTEM) material and the pipe made of X80 (API SPEC 5L) material. The wear pattern of the inspection arm in crude oil and refined oil pipelines is investigated by adding lubricating media with similar physical parameters to crude oil and refined oil, such as light mineral oil, SAE 5W-30 lubricant, 600XP 680 lubricant. The experimental results are analyzed to explore the wear performance of the leaf spring caliper arm, and the prediction algorithm is used to predict the wear pattern of the leaf spring after lubrication. The results show that the average error between the predicted and actual values meets the accuracy requirements, and the wear prediction model of the detection arm can be used as a correction algorithm for the wear error of the leaf spring caliper to improve the detection accuracy.

The predatory natural enemy Eocanthecona furcellata plays a crucial role in agricultural ecosystems due to its effective pest control measures and defensive venom. Predator venom contains serine protease inhibitors (SPIs), which are the primary regulators of serine protease activity and play key roles in digestion, development, innate immunity, and other physiological regulatory processes. However, the regulation mechanism of SPIs in the salivary glands of predatory natural enemies is still unknown. In this study, we sequenced the transcriptome of E. furcellata salivary gland and identified 38 SPIs genes named EfSPI1∼EfSPI38. Through gene structure, multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analysis, real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) expression profiles of different developmental stages and different tissues were analyzed. RNAi technology was used to explore the gene function of EFSPI20. The results showed that these 38 EfSPIs genes contained 8 SPI domains, which were serpin, TIL, Kunitz, Kazal, Antistasin, Pacifastin, WAP and A2M. The expression profile results showed that the expression of different types of EfSPIs genes was different at different developmental stages and different tissues. Most of the EfSPIs genes were highly expressed in the egg stage. The EfSPI20, EfSPI21, EfSPI22, and EfSPI24 genes of the Pacifastin subfamily and the EfSPI35 gene of the A2M subfamily were highly expressed in the nymphal and adult stages, which was consistent with the RT-qPCR verification results. These five genes are positively correlated with each other and have a synergistic effect on E. furcellata, and they were highly expressed in salivary glands. After interfering with the expression of the EfSPI20 gene, the survival rate and predatory amount of male and female adults were significantly decreased. Taken together, we speculated some EfSPIs may inhibit trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase, and some EfSPIs may be involved in autoimmune responses. EfSPI20 was essential for the predation and digestion of E. furcellata, and the functions of other EfSPIs were discussed. Our findings provide valuable insights into the diversity of EfSPIs in E. furcellata and the potential functions of regulating their predation, digestion and innate immunity, which may be of great significance for developing new pest control strategies.

Air injection is an effective method to eliminate flow separation and improve blade loading in compressors. In existing studies on unsteady air injection, achieving a better control effect than steady injection with lower injection consumption is a major difficulty and challenge. In this work, pulsed endwall air injection (PEAI) was carried out numerically in a highly loaded compressor cascade under different injection frequencies and injection amplitudes. The mechanism through which PEAI influences corner separation and vortical flow, especially the effect of initial injection phase on the flow field of compressor cascade, was revealed. The results showed that PEAI effectively suppressed the corner separation with lower injection mass flow rate compared with steady endwall air injection (SEAI). The time-averaged overall loss coefficient and endwall loss coefficient were reduced by 10.5% and 28.7%, respectively, under the optimal PEAI scheme. Higher injection amplitude exhibited a more effectively controlled range in the suction corner, which led to a decrease in corner separation and deterioration of the mid-span flow field. The interaction between trailing edge separation and low-momentum fluid at mid-span led to the formation of an injection vortex. When conducting PEAI, the effect of inertia was observed for flow in the injection hole, which was derived from the interactions between injection fluid at different velocities and will increase with the improvement of injection frequency. The effects of injection location and diameter of the injection hole were also investigated. The injection location of PEAI affected the flow field by changing the effect region of the injection and low-momentum fluid near the endwall. The injection hole diameter had a significant impact on the intensity of the passage vortex and mid-span flow field.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a prevalent form of malignant tumors affecting the prostate gland and is frequently diagnosed in males in Western countries. Identifying diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers is not only important for screening drug targets but also for understanding their pathways and reducing the cost of experimental verification of PCa. The objective of this study was to identify and validate promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for PCa. Methods: This study implemented a machine learning technique to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of PCa using protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. In addition, multi-database validation and literature review were performed to verify the diagnostic biomarkers. To optimize the prognosis of our results, univariate Cox regression analysis was utilized to screen survival-related genes. This study employed stepwise multivariate Cox regression analysis to develop a prognostic risk model. Finally, receiver operating characteristic analysis confirmed that these predictive biomarkers demonstrated a substantial level of sensitivity and specificity when predicting the prognostic survival of patients. Results: The hub genes were UBE2C (Ubiquitin Conjugating Enzyme E2 C), CCNB1 (Cyclin B1), TOP2A (DNA Topoisomerase II Alpha), TPX2 (TPX2 Microtubule Nucleation Factor), CENPM (Centromere Protein M), F5 (Coagulation Factor V), APOE (Apolipoprotein E), NPY (Neuropeptide Y), and TRIM36 (Tripartite Motif Containing 36). All of these hub genes were validated by multiple databases. By validation in these databases, these 10 hub genes were significantly involved in significant pathways. The risk model was constructed by a four-gene-based prognostic factor that included TOP2A, UBE2C, MYL9, and FLNA. Conclusions: The machine learning algorithm combined with PPI networks identified hub genes that can serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for PCa. This risk model will enable patients with PCa to be more accurately diagnosed and predict new drugs in clinical trials.

Abstract Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. is an important, perennial medicinal plant whose root microbiome is considered to play an important role in promoting accumulation of effective medicinal ingredients (liquiritin and glycrrhizic acid). Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of the microbial community structural composition and metabolite-plant-microbes association of G. uralensis Fisch. We collected both soil and rhizosphere samples of G. uralensis from different environmental conditions (cultivated and wild) and growth years (grown for one year and three years). Our data revealed higher species diversity in the wild group than in the cultivated group. The core rhizosphere microbiome of G. uralensis comprised 78 genera, including Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, some of which were potential plant beneficial microbes. Our results suggest that the growth of G. uralensis has a correlation with the root-associated microbiota assemblage. Integrated analysis among rhizosphere microbial taxa, plant gene expressions, and liquiritin and glycrrhizic acid accumulation showed that the liquiritin and glycrrhizic acid accumulation exhibited associations with the rhizosphere microbial composition at the genus level. The results provide valuable information to guide cultivation of G. uralensis, and potentially to harness the power of the root-associated microbiota to improve medicinal plant production.

This study was undertaken to identify oat (Avena sativa L.) varieties optimal for cultivation in the Jiuquan region, China, in 2021. A selection of 27 domestic and international oat varieties were analyzed, considering ten key agronomic traits, including plant height, stem diameter, spike length, leaf width, and yield. Employing methods such as cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and grey correlation degree, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted. The principal component analysis distilled the ten indicators to three core components. The most influential factors in the first principal component were plant height, ear length, and hay yield, while leaf length and leaf area index were the highest contributors to the second component. The stem-to-leaf ratio emerged as the principal indicator in the third component. The cluster analysis resulted in the classification of the 27 oat varieties into 3 categories. Following a comprehensive evaluation through the grey correlation degree and principal component analysis methodologies, we found that the oat varieties Sweety 1, Fuyan 1, Dingyan 2, Baler, Quebec, and Longyan 2 received the highest scores. These varieties, hence, appear to be the most suitable for cultivation and promotion in the Jiuquan region. This study thus provides invaluable insights into oat cultivation practices, offering guidance for farmers, agricultural policymakers, and future research in the field.

Abstract Aims To investigate coping strategies and identify their associated factors among Chinese clinical nurses during the early stage of coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods This study was conducted in seven designated hospitals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of the coronavirus disease 2019 in the southwest of China between 1 February and 31 March, 2020. Multiple linear regression was conducted to explore the association of different factors with the coping strategies of nurses. Results Nurses’ positive coping was associated with higher psychological capital (B = 0.185, 95% CI 0.158–0.213), social support (B = 0.292, 95% CI 0.244–0.340) and lower frustration (B = −0.065, 95% CI −0.123 to −0.007). In contrast, higher frustration (B = 0.091, 95% CI 0.044–0.139), lower performance (B = −0.054, 95% CI −0.101 to −0.007) and psychological capital (B = −0.035, 95% CI −0.055 to −0.014) were associated with negative coping.

The receptor-binding domain (RBD) and the main protease (Mpro) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) play a crucial role in the entry and replication of viral particles, and co-targeting both of them could be an attractive approach for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection by setting up a “double lock” in the viral lifecycle. However, few dual RBD/Mpro-targeting agents have been reported. Here, four novel RBD/Mpro dual-targeting peptides, termed as MRs 1-4, were discovered by an integrated virtual screening scheme combining molecular docking-based screening and molecular dynamics simulation. All of them possessed nanomolar binding affinities to both RBD and Mpro ranging from 14.4 to 39.2 nM and 22.5–40.4 nM, respectively. Further pseudovirus infection assay revealed that the four selected peptides showed >50% inhibition against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus at a concentration of 5 µM without significant cytotoxicity to host cells. This study leads to the identification of a class of dual RBD/Mpro-targeting agents, which may be developed as potential and effective SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics.

Procecidochares utilis is an obligatory parasitic insect to Eupatorium adenophorum. Both organisms have been spread to some metal mines areas. The objective of this study is to comprehend the trend of heavy metals transfer and the process of their bio-accumulation in the soil-E. adenophorum-P. utilis system and particularly their impact on the parasitic effect of P. utilis to E. adenophorum to reflect the impact of heavy metals on obligate parasitic insect and its host. Therefore, a detailed investigation was carried out at the Suzu Lead–Zinc Mine in Yunnan Province using the concentric circle's method. The results showed that the parasitic rate of P. utilis to a single plant and branch is positively correlated with distance. The metals content of the soil in E. adenophorum and P. utilis, decreased dramatically with an increase in distance away from the center of the mining area. From which is cleared that these metals could enter to E. adenophorum and P. utilis through the soil-E. adenophorum-P. utilis system which likely to affect its parasitic activities. In addition, the parasitic rate is impacted by per Zn content greatly, and the parasitic rate per plant is affected by Cd content enormously. This work could provide important basis of data for further understanding and clarifying the effects of bioaccumulation and heavy metals pollution on various aspects of the food chain. Simultaneously, it could clarify and simplify whether heavy metal contamination affects the parasitic behaviour of some obligatory parasitic insects.

ObjectivePlatelet (PLT) engages in immune and inflammatory responses, all of which are related to the prognosis of critically ill patients. Although thrombocytopenia at ICU admission contributes to in-hospital mortality, PLT is repeatedly measured during ICU hospitalization and the role of longitudinal PLT trajectory remains unclear. We aimed to identify dynamic PLT trajectory patterns and evaluate their relationships with mortality risk and thrombocytopenia.MethodsWe adopted a three-phase, multi-cohort study strategy. Firstly, longitudinal PLT trajectory patterns within the first four ICU days and their associations with 28-day survival were tested in the eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) and independently validated in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Secondly, the relationships among PLT trajectory patterns, thrombocytopenia, and 28-day mortality were explored and validated. Finally, a Mortality GRade system for ICU dynamically monitoring patients (Mortality-GRID) was developed to quantify the mortality risk based on longitudinal PLT, which was further validated in the Molecular Epidemiology of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (MEARDS) cohort.ResultsA total of 35,332 ICU patients were included from three cohorts. Trajectory analysis clustered patients into ascending (AS), stable (ST), or descending (DS) PLT patterns. DS patients with high baseline PLT decline quickly, resulting in poor prognosis. AS patients have low baseline PLT but recover quickly, favoring a better prognosis. ST patients maintain low PLT, having a moderate prognosis in between (HRSTvsAS = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.14–1.38, P = 6.15 × 10−6; HRDSvsAS = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.40–1.79, P = 1.41 × 10−13). The associations remained significant in patients without thrombocytopenia during the entire ICU hospitalization and were robust in sensitivity analyses and stratification analyses. Further, the trajectory pattern was a warning sign of thrombocytopenia, which mediated 27.2% of the effects of the PLT trajectory on 28-day mortality (HRindirect = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.06–1.17, P = 9.80 × 10−6). Mortality-GRID well predicts mortality risk, which is in high consistency with that directly estimated in MEARDS (r = 0.98, P = 1.30 × 10−23).ConclusionLongitudinal PLT trajectory is a complementary predictor to baseline PLT for patient survival, even in patients without risk of thrombocytopenia. Mortality-GRID could identify patients at high mortality risk.

In this paper 1-bit dual-polarized ultra-thin lens antennas are presented based on Huygens’ principle. The unit cell provides two-state transmission phase compensation for dual-polarized waves. By tuning state 0 away from resonance and state 1 near Huygens’ resonance, the 180° transmission phase difference between the two states is achieved. In the frequency range of 27.5–28.5 GHz, the transmission phase difference between the two states of the unit cell is 180° ± 20°, and the transmission amplitude is greater than −2 dB. Using the proposed unit cell, three ultrathin 1-bit Huygens’ metasurface antennas comprising 33 × 33 unit cells with single beams pointing separately at 0°, 15°, and 30° are designed, fabricated and measured. Simulated and measured results show that the proposed 1-bit transmitarray antenna can achieve single-beam patterns, which is useful for the development of reconfigurable transmission and digital metasurface antennas in the future.

Mangrove is a unique marine ecosystem growing in the intertidal zone of tropical and subtropical coast, with the characteristics of hypoxia tolerance, high salinity, and high humidity. In order to discover novel leading compounds with potent phytotoxicity, seven pairs of azaphilones E/Z isomers, isochromophilone H (1a/1b), sclerotiorins A and B (2a/2b and 3a/3b), ochlephilone (4a/4b), isochromophilone IV (5a/5b), isochromophilone J (6a/6b), and isochromophilone I (7a/7b), were isolated from the culture broth of the mangrove-derived fungus, the Penicillium sclerotiorum HY5, by various chromatographic methods. Among them, 1a, 1b, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6a, and 6b were new compounds. Their chemical structures and absolute configurations were elucidated based on high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (HRESIMS), 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analysis, and comparisons of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. Compounds 3, 4, and 7 exhibited potent phytotoxicity against the growth of radicle and plumule on Amaranthus retroflexus L., with EC50 values ranging from 234.87 to 320.84 μM, compared to the positive control glufosinate-ammonium, with EC50 values of 555.11 μM for radicle, and 656.04 μM for plumule. Compounds 4 and 7 also showed inhibitory effects on the growth of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medikus), with EC50 values ranging from 768.97 to 1,201.52 μM. This study provides new leading compounds for the research and development of marine-derived bioherbicides.

Some Western scholars have re-examined the concept of “Chinese medicine” and its knowledge system under the influence of global history research methods in recent years, in an attempt to understand the factors that led to the spread of Chinese medicine around the world, and what kind of Chinese medicine is constituted outside of China. Thus, researchers have studied the initial stage of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)'s entry into the western world, tracing its roots and observing new knowledge systems formed in the process of cross-cultural communication. Responding to the research of Western scholars, this paper studies the Radicis Chynae (《中国根书简》 Letters on Chinese Root), a monograph written by Andreas Vesalius, a famous European anatomist who lived in the 16th century. The author of this article examined the understanding and interpretation of Chinese medicine by the European intelligentsia from 16th to 19th century, investigated the influence of the westward spread of TCM on the scientific revolution and medical progress in Europe, and analyzed its relationship with the rise of Sinology in Europe. This article discusses the knowledge interaction between Chinese medicine and the formation of modern European medicine from the perspective of global history and cross-culture.

Rare earth element (REE) concentrations in river water reflect both local geological background and the intensity of anthropogenic activities. The increasing demand for high-tech applications is accompanied by an increase in REEs in water environments, especially in urban regions. Therefore, the dissolved REEs in a typical urban river (Yongding River) were analyzed to reveal the influence of anthropogenic inputs. It was found that the sum of dissolved REE (ΣREE) concentrations in river water were 6.27~86.26 ng L−1 (mean 31.05 ng L−1). The spatial distribution of REEs is significantly affected by both natural processes and human activities. To eliminate the effect of upstream land use on downstream measurements, this study established a 500 m buffer zone alongside the river and identified the anthropogenic origin of REEs through correlations among land use proportions within the buffer zone, the population density, and REEs. The Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized REEs revealed pronouncedly positive Gd anomalies in the range 0.30~20.16 in all river samples. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that the proportion of cultivated land was positively correlated with most of the REEs. A three-dimensional tracer system was established via Gdanth, NO3−/Na+ and Cl−/Na+ to characterize the impact of sewage treatment plants, hospitals and agricultural activities on river water. The results indicate that with the acceleration of urbanization, abnormal REEs can be considered as a sensitive indicator to assess the influence of anthropogenic activities on water ecosystems.

Nanoscaled palladium particles supported on graphitic carbon nitride (Pd0/g-C3N4) is prepared to improve the oxygen transfer in Wacker oxidation via chemical reduction method. From the analysis of FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and ICP, Pd0 particles are firmly combined with g-C3N4 layers, and sub-surface ones occupy most of the components. It is worth mentioning that graphene oxide (GO), which is completely recyclable without further pollution, can be used as a ‘solid weak acid’ taking the place of H2SO4 and CF3COOH. Under the optimization conditions, as many as 46 kinds of olefins are transferred into corresponding products with satisfactory yields, and o-methyl styrene gets the highest yield of 94%. After five times of recycling experiment, the yield of acetophenone only decreases by about 7.0% in the uniform reaction process. In virtue of former research results and molecular electrostatic potential, a possible mechanism is put forward to explain the catalytic process.

Abstract Background Postoperative epidural haematoma and wound infection can cause devastating neurological damage in spinal surgery. Closed drainage is a common method to prevent epidural haematoma, infection and related neurological impairment after lumbar decompression; however, it is not clear whether drainage can reduce postoperative complications and improve clinical efficacy. This randomized study aims to explore the role of closed drainage in reducing postoperative complications and improving the clinical efficacy of single-level lumbar discectomy. Methods A total of 420 patients with single-level lumbar disc herniation were finally included in this study (169 females and 251 males, age 50.0 ± 6.4 years). A total of 214 patients were randomly assigned to the closed drainage group, and 206 patients were assigned to the non-drainage group. The incidence of postoperative fever, symptomatic epidural haematoma, wound infection and the need for revision surgery were compared between the two groups by the chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. The visual analogue scale (VAS) and oswestry disability index (ODI) were used to evaluate the improvement of pain relief and the recovery of lumbar function. The VAS and ODI scores were compared between the two groups using t tests. Results The complications of the two groups were compared and analysed. There was only a statistically significant difference in the postoperative fever rate (p = 0.022), as the non-drainage group had a higher fever rate, but there were no significant differences in the rates of symptomatic epidural haematoma, wound infection or revision operation (p > 0.05). After concrete analysis, for the rate of fever less than 38.5 degrees, there was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.027), but there was no significant difference when the fever was greater than 38.5 degrees (p > 0.05). When comparing the VAS scores of the operation area on the first day after the operation, the pain relief in the closed drainage group was significantly better than that in the non-drainage group, with scores of 5.1 ± 0.8 and 6.0 ± 0.7, respectively (p 0.05). Conclusions For single-level lumbar discectomy, closed drainage is beneficial for reducing postoperative low-grade fever and relieving pain in the operation area in the very early postoperative stage. However, drainage does not have a significant impact on reducing the incidence of postoperative complications or improving clinical efficacy. According to the Grand Chinese Dictionary, plague is defined to be an acute infectious disease. The Chinese term “infectious disease” is not what it is commonly thought originated from Japanese. The medical nomenclature shift from the traditional “plague” to the modern “infectious disease” is completed by the medical missionaries, Chinese scholars, and the national authority, each utilising different strategies. It is a history of acceptance concerning the concept of “infectious disease” from academia to national level. The conscious use of infectious disease-related thought and terminology by Chinese officials and doctors when studying infectious disease is a scientific modernization towards the understanding of epidemics. In a sense, this evolution of medical knowledge embodies the modernization of infectious disease in China.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of explicit information (EI) in the context of Processing Instruction (PI) as an alternative to traditional teaching methods. PI encompasses explicit information and structured input activity (SI). However, the effectiveness of EI has been a subject of debate. To address this question, grade-7 students were divided into three groups: the complete Processing Instruction group, the explicit information only group, and the structured input activity only group. Following pre-tests and the implementation of different teaching instructions on English passive voice, the scores of the participants were analyzed for the immediate post-test and delayed post-test. The results suggested that although EI did not accelerate the acquisition of the form-meaning connection of English passive voice, it was beneficial for final performance similar to SI. The complete Processing Instruction, however, proved to be the most effective. This study suggests a possible association between the effectiveness of EI and the relative difficulty of the target item for language learners.

Based on listed companies issuing bonds on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2007 to 2017, this study analyzes the relationship between significant risk warnings in Chinese companies’ annual reports and corporate bond credit spreads. The main findings are as follows. First, in the Chinese market, “substantial warnings of significant risks” can significantly improve corporate bond credit spreads, reflecting the risk-warning effect; second, state-owned property rights weaken this effect, which only pertains to listed companies with poor risk management and low information quality; third, significant risk warnings increase investors’ heterogeneous beliefs, also affecting credit spreads; and fourth, through textual analysis, it is found that the corporate bond credit spread is greater when the disclosed risk factors are more pessimistic and less similar to those of the previous year. The findings of this paper help to enrich the literature on credit spreads and risk disclosure. Keywords: Risk disclosure, Risk warning, Credit spreads

Lemon peel can be used as traditional Chinese medicine. Flavonoids are the most important components in lemon peel, which can be developed as natural medicine without side effects. This study investigated the protective effect of lemon peel polyphenols (LPP) on human keratinocyte HaCaT cells under oxidative stress. The active components of LPP were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The abilities of LPP to scavenge DPPH and ABTS+ free radicals were studied for detection of antioxidation in vitro. Cell survival rates were determined by MTT assay. The antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant index of cells were determined using kit. The mRNA and protein expression of cells were determined by qPCR and western blot. The ability of LPP to scavenge DPPH and ABTS+ free radicals were stronger than those of vitamin C (Vc) at the same concentration. As expected, compared with the normal group of cells, the model group had decreased cell survival, increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), decreased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH), and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content. qPCR and western blot results indicated that the expression of Bcl-2-related X protein (Bax), caspases-3, erythroid-derived nuclear factor 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were decreased and the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) was increased in the model group, compared with the normal group. LPP treatment improved cell survival rate, reduced intracellular LDH and MDA levels, increased intracellular SOD, CAT, GSH levels, down-regulated Bax, caspases-3, Nrf2, HO-1 expression, and up-regulated Bcl-2 expression. Component analyses found that LPP contains gallic acid, neochlorogenic acid, (+)-catechin, caffeic acid, (−)-Catechin gallate, isochlorogenic acid A, rosmarinic acid, and protocatechuic acid. LPP was found to regulate the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway through 8 active substances to protect HaCaT cells against oxidative stress in vitro.

We propose a high refractive index metamaterial (HRIM)that is composed of two identical patch arrays symmetrically etched on both sides of a dielectric plate. By reducing the gap of adjacent patches and the thickness of dielectric plate, the proposed metamaterial can suppress the diamagnetic response and enhance the capacitance coupling, so that the refractive index of the metamaterial is higher than 10 in wideband from 4 to 8 GHz. Attributing to the property of high refractive index, the metamaterial can effectively improve the performance of a microstrip antenna when it is loaded as a superstrate. The measured results reveal that the antenna has an impedance bandwidth (S11 < −10 dB) of 690 MHz (12.4%) and a maximum gain of 13 dB appearing at 5.6 GHz. The 1 dB and 3 dB gain bandwidths are 380 MHz (6.7%) and 590 MHz (10.3%), respectively. Fortunately, the profile of the antenna is only 0.19λ0 (λ0is the free space wavelength at central frequency). Furthermore, the profile can be further reduced to 0.15λ0 when the radiation patch of the antenna is surrounded by another metamaterial.

To analyze the epidemiological characteristics and drug resistance of tuberculosis (TB) patients in northern China. The epidemiological characteristics of 620 patients with tuberculosis from 2014 to 2016 were analyzed, including gender, age, occupation, education, income, place of residence and time distribution. 148 strains were identified as mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, 46 of 148 strains were identified as resistant strains, and among of which 73.91% of mono-resistance rate, 17.39% of poly-resistance rate, and 8.70% of multidrug resistant rate. Most of the patients were male, farmers, and the age of between 40 and 60, primary education background, income of 5000-10000RMB/year and newly diagnosed patients. The resistance rates of the four first line anti-tuberculosis drugs ranked as S (streptomycin)＞R (rifampicin)＞H (isoniazid)＞E (ethambutol). 12 drug resistance spectrums were found, among them, mono-resistance was mainly concentrated in S (45.65%), poly-resistance was mainly concentrated in H + S (8.70%), and multidrug resistance was mainly concentrated in H + R (4.35%). Therefore, middle-aged people, male, farmers, education for elementary or junior high school, and new patients with incomes not exceeding 10000RMB/year will be the key population for prevention and control in the future and the main drug-resistant population. This is particularly relevant for controlling infection sources, community prevention and control, and drug resistance treatment.

Advances in systems biology, particularly based on the omics approaches, have resulted in a paradigm shift in both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the gut microbiome research. In line with this paradigm shift, the importance of TCM and gut microbiome in healthcare, as well as their interplay, has become clearer. Firstly, we briefly summarize the current status of three topics in this review: microbiome, TCM, and relationship of TCM and microbiome. Second, we focused on TCM's therapeutic effects and gut microbiome's mediation roles, including the relationships among diet, gut microbiome, and health care. Third, we have summarized some databases and tools to help understand the impact of TCM and gut microbiome on diagnosis and treatment at the molecular level. Finally, we introduce the effects of gut microbiome on TCM and host health, with two case studies, one on the metabolic effect of gut microbiome on TCM, and another on cancer treatment. In summary, we have reviewed the current status of the two components of healthcare: TCM and gut microbiome, as well as their concert effects. It is quite clear that as the holobiont, the maintenance of the health status of human would depend heavily on TCM, gut microbiome, and their combined effects.

The positive bias temperature instability (PBTI) reliability of buried InGaAs channel n-MOSFETs with an InP barrier layer and Al2O3 gate dielectric under medium field (2.7 MV/cm) and high field (5.0 MV/cm) are investigated in this paper. The Al2O3/InP interface of the insertion of an InP barrier layer has fewer interface and border traps compared to that of the Al2O3/InGaAs interface. The subthreshold slope, transconductance, and shift of Vg are studied by using the direct-current Id-Vg measurements under the PBTI stress. The experimental results show that the degradation of positive ΔVg under the medium field stress is mainly caused by the acceptor trap, while the donor trap under the high field stress become dominant in the subthreshold region, which leads to the negative shift in Vg. The medium field stress-induced acceptor traps are attributed by the InP barrier layer in the subthreshold region, resulting that the low leakage current can be achieved in the buried InGaAs channel n-MOSFETs with an InP barrier layer compared to the surface InGaAs channel n-MOSFETs.

A tensile-strained GeSn/SiGeSn multiple quantum well (MQW) laser wrapped in Si3N4 liner stressor is designed and characterized theoretically. A biaxial tensile strain is introduced into the GeSn/SiGeSn MQW laser by the Si3N4 liner stressor. The boosting effects of tensile strain on the threshold current density Jth and optical gain in GeSn/SiGeSn lasers are attributed to the modulation of energy band structure and carrier distribution in the GeSn wells. Tensile-strained Ge0.90Sn0.10/Si0.161Ge0.695Sn0.144 MQW laser wrapped in 500 nm Si3N4 liner stressor achieves a Jth reduction from 476 to 168 A/cm2 and a significant enhancement of optical gain, as compared to the relaxed control device without Si3N4 . The design of GeSn/SiGeSn MQW structure wrapped in Si3N4 liner stressor provides a practical way to realize high performance GeSn based mid-infrared laser.

Purpose: Although doctoral education has experienced substantial development in recent decades, it remains an elite, hence fragile, dimension of university policy and practice. This study aims to articulate perspectives to guide the next phase of strengthening and growth. Design/methodology/approach: Working from theoretical and empirical research conducted in China, including scholarship on workforce ecosystems, education design and the student experience, this study contributes a framework with qualitative insights which clarify the goals and experiences of doctoral education in ways that will render it more relevant, effective and contributing. Findings: The paper identifies areas for doctoral reform to ensure career readiness, including three distinctive outcomes and four indispensable experiences. Originality/value: This study advances a doctoral design framework which can render transparent the substance of programs and prompt program coordinators to develop and ensure career relevance.

Despite the importance of undergraduate research for student learning and development, not enough work has been done to clarify its effects in different disciplinary contexts. Using data from the China College Student Survey, this research adopts Becher and Trowler's theory of discipline classification to understand the relationship between undergraduate research and students' learning outcomes in different disciplines. It indicates that first, contributing to journals/conferences correlates with students' self-reported learning outcomes in Physics, History, and Engineering, but these relationships can be explained by process-centered activities, except in Physics. Second, early-year undergraduates' learning outcomes are relatively weakly related to conducting research with faculty in pure disciplines. By contrast, such relationships are distinct in applied disciplines. Third, in soft disciplines, participating in competitions significantly correlates with more types of students' learning outcomes than conducting research with faculty, while in hard disciplines, they both play quite important roles. It makes recommendations for future research and practice, which enrich insight into how universities can best engage undergraduates in research.

Abstract We experimentally demonstrate a highly efficient, broadband linear polarization converter functioning at terahertz frequencies. The linear polarization converter is composed of three metasurfaces and two dielectric layers interlaced with each other. The neighboring unit cells of the central metasurface layer of the linear polarization converter exhibit strong electromagnetic coupling, which increases the number of resonances and results in significant bandwidth broadening. The simulation and experimental results show that in the frequency range of 0.2 to 0.4 THz, the proposed polarization converter has a flat transmission curve and exhibits a transmission efficiency that is higher than 80%. High performance terahertz polarization conversion is desirable in many fields, such as terahertz spectroscopy, imaging, and communications.

A feasible palladium-catalyzed Wacker oxidation system has been developed, which is characterized by not adding ligand and using hydrogen peroxide as the sole oxidant. Compared with the traditional Wacker system, the described method offers a facile and environment-friendly choice using the green oxidant, and can be applied to more complex substrates.

This paper presents a wideband tunable cross-polarization converter based on a graphene metasurface with a hollow-carved “H” array in the mid-infrared regions. The converter consists of three layers: the upper layer of the insulation dielectric layer is a periodic regular hollow-carved “H” array, and the bottom layer is a metal ground plane. Simulation is carried out by applying the frequency domain solver of the CST Microwave Studio software. The numerical simulation results show that the polarization converter transforms linear light into its cross-polarization light. The polarization conversion ratio is over 90% at 2.53 THz within the range of 34.39 to 36.92 THz, whereas the FWHM bandwidth is 3.87 THz within the range of 33.8 to 37.67 THz, about 11% of the central frequency. Thus, the cross-polarization converter can be dynamically tuned over a wide frequency range by altering the Fermi-energy of graphene, without reoptimizing and refabricating nanostructures. The operating frequency band of the proposed structure can also be tuned by changing the size of $w_1$ or $\Lambda$ while keeping the polarization conversion ratios high. Moreover, strong robustness is observed under the oblique incidence. Specifically, the polarization conversion ratios can be maintained at over 90% at angles of incidence of up to $50^\circ$ . Therefore, the proposed device has potential development and application in the manipulation of light polarization in the mid-infrared regions.

The fat body, a multifunctional organ analogous to the liver and fat tissue of vertebrates, plays an important role in insect life cycles. The fat body is involved in protein storage, energy metabolism, elimination of xenobiotics, and production of immunity regulator-like proteins. However, the molecular mechanism of the fat body's physiological functions in the tephritid stem gall-forming fly, Procecidochares utilis, are still unknown. In this study, we performed transcriptome analysis of the fat body of P. utilis using Illumina sequencing technology. In total, 3.71 G of clean reads were obtained and assembled into 30,559 unigenes, with an average length of 539 bp. Among those unigenes, 21,439 (70.16%) were annotated based on sequence similarity to proteins in NCBI's non-redundant protein sequence database (Nr). Sequences were also compared to NCBI's non-redundant nucleotide sequence database (Nt), a manually curated and reviewed protein sequence database (SwissProt), and KEGG and gene ontology annotations were applied to better understand the functions of these unigenes. A comparative analysis was performed to identify unigenes related to detoxification, immunity and energy metabolism. Many unigenes involved in detoxification were identified, including 50 unigenes of putative cytochrome P450s (P450s), 18 of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), 35 of carboxylesterases (CarEs) and 26 of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Many unigenes related to immunity were identified, including 17 putative serpin genes, five peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs) and four lysozyme genes. In addition, unigenes potentially involved in energy metabolism, including 18 lipase genes, five fatty acid synthase (FAS) genes and six elongases of very long chain fatty acid (ELOVL) genes, were identified. This transcriptome improves our genetic understanding of P. utilis and the identification of a numerous transcripts in the fat body of P. utilis offer a series of valuable molecular resources for future studies on the functions of these genes.
