Landscapes have been shaped and reshaped by humans to meet the changing needs of shifting subsistence strategies and demographic patterns. In the Mediterranean region, a widespread subsistence strategy that has left a major imprint is pastoralism, often tied with transhumance. Pastoralism and the associated tensions between pastoralists and settled agriculturalists have political and legal dimensions which are sometimes overlooked in mainstream accounts of national “patrimony”. The rapid transformations of subsistence strategies witnessed in the twentieth century have changed pastoral landscapes in diverse ways. This paper focusses on the central Mediterranean archipelago of Malta to explore how the values and management of such landscapes require holistic assessment, taking into account the intangible practices and embedded legal rights and obligations that maintained these systems. While in Malta pastoralism has practically disappeared, its physical imprint persists in the form of a network of droveways, which was once a carefully regulated form of commons. Burgeoning demographic growth is erasing large tracts of the historic environment. Against this backdrop of contestation, this paper draws on interdisciplinary approaches to interrogate the shifting legal and historical narratives through which pastoral landscapes have been managed, in the process revealing how dominant epistemological and legal frameworks are also implicated in the erasure of these landscapes.

Critical thinking is considered one of the most significant competencies that employees need to develop in order for them to contribute to an organisation’s success and productivity. The lack of professional development opportunities aimed at enhancing the critical thinking capacity of employees might be deleterious for organisations seeking to capitalise on this competence as a means of remaining innovative. By means of a conceptual case study of Thinkerly – a business-to-business (B2B) firm offering critical thinking training solutions in Malta – this article considers the firm’s business idea, target customer segment, and competitive external business environment. The hypothetical business proposal analyses the internal and external factors affecting the firm’s performance and evaluates the positioning, strategy and competitive advantage of the bespoke training firm. The primary objective of the conceptual case study is to indicate the main considerations a B2B company needs to take when developing critical thinking training in a specific context. To illustrate how any such proposal is likely to have its limitations, two of the models utilised in the design of Thinkerly’s proposal are subjected to critique.

We herein present an overview of the upcoming 5th edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours focussing on lymphoid neoplasms. Myeloid and histiocytic neoplasms will be presented in a separate accompanying article. Besides listing the entities of the classification, we highlight and explain changes from the revised 4th edition. These include reorganization of entities by a hierarchical system as is adopted throughout the 5th edition of the WHO classification of tumours of all organ systems, modification of nomenclature for some entities, revision of diagnostic criteria or subtypes, deletion of certain entities, and introduction of new entities, as well as inclusion of tumour-like lesions, mesenchymal lesions specific to lymph node and spleen, and germline predisposition syndromes associated with the lymphoid neoplasms.

In macromolecular crystallography, higher flux, smaller beams, and faster detectors open the door to experiments with very large numbers of very small samples that can reveal polymorphs and dynamics but require re-engineering of approaches to the clustering of images both at synchrotrons and XFELs (X-ray free electron lasers). The need for the management of orders of magnitude more images and limitations of file systems favor a transition from simple one-file-per-image systems such as CBF to image container systems such as HDF5. This further increases the load on computers and networks and requires a re-examination of the presentation of metadata. In this paper, we discuss three important components of this problem-improved approaches to the clustering of images to better support experiments on polymorphs and dynamics, recent and upcoming changes in metadata for Eiger images, and software to rapidly validate images in the revised Eiger format.

Introduction A decreased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) level has been found in heart failure (HF). There are no reports assessing IGF-2 in HF, although in vitro research has shown that IGF-2 stimulates cardiomyocyte proliferation more than IGF-1. The study aim was to compare the IGF-1 and IGF-2 concentrations depending on HF exacerbation and annual survival. Material and methods Among 75 patients hospitalized due to newly diagnosed or exacerbated HF, the following evaluations were performed: anthropometric measurements, basic laboratory tests, heart echocardiography, and IGF-1 and IGF-2 concentrations. The annual survival was assessed. The participants were divided into NYHA II and NYHA III/IV groups. They did not differ in age, gender, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or triglycerides, but differed in echocardiographic parameters, BNP, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Nine (12%) patients died during the 12-month follow-up. Results There were no differences in IGF-1 between NYHA groups and depending on the BMI, carbohydrate metabolism disorders and annual survival. A significantly lower IGF-2 concentration was found in NYHA III/IV vs. NYHA II: 583.71 (162.35) vs. 676.08 (172.09), p = 0.02, and in those who died: 501.47 (172.89) vs. 645.31 (166.17) nmol/l, p = 0.04. There was a positive correlation between IGF-2 and TC: r = 0.28, p = 0.015 and LDL: r = 0.29, p = 0.011 in the whole group and among patients with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2: respectively for TC (r = 0.31, p = 0.014) and LDL (r = 0.28, p = 0.028). No IGF-1 correlation was found. Conclusions Reduced IGF-2 concentration is a better marker of patients with more advanced HF and a higher 1-year death risk than low IGF-1. Its secretion may depend on the cholesterol concentration.

Abstract Although epidemiologic research has demonstrated significant differences in incidence and outcomes of sepsis according to sex, their underlying biological mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we studied the influence of hormonal status by comparing in vivo cardiac performances measured by MRI in non-ovariectomized and ovariectomized septic female rats. Control and ovariectomized rats were randomly allocated to the following groups: sham, sepsis and sepsis plus landiolol. Sepsis was induced by caecum ligation and punction (CLP). Landiolol, a short-acting selective β1-adrenergic blocker improving the in vivo cardiac performance of septic male rats was perfused continuously after sepsis induction. Cardiac MRI was carried out 18 h after induction of sepsis to assess in vivo cardiac function. Capillary permeability was evaluated by Evans Blue administration and measurement of its tissue extravasation. Variation in myocardial gene and protein expression was also assessed by qPCR and western-blot in the left ventricular tissue. Sepsis reduced indexed stroke volume, cardiac index and indexed end-diastolic volume compared to sham group in ovariectomized females whereas it had no effect in control females. This was associated with an overexpression of JAK2 expression and STAT3 phosphorylation on Ser727 site, and an inhibition of the adrenergic pathways in OVR females. Landiolol increased the indexed stroke volume by reversing the indexed end-diastolic volume reduction after sepsis in ovariectomized females, while it decreased indexed stroke volume and cardiac index in control. This was supported by an overexpression of genes involved in calcium influx in OVR females while an inactivation of the β-adrenergic and a calcium efflux pathway was observed in control females. Sepsis decreased in vivo cardiac performances in ovariectomized females but not in control females, presumably associated with a more pronounced inflammation, inhibition of the adrenergic pathway and calcium efflux defects. Administration of landiolol prevents this cardiac dysfunction in ovariectomized females with a probable activation of calcium influx, while it has deleterious effects in control females in which calcium efflux pathways were down-regulated.

This study integrates social cognitive and cognitive dissonance theories to examine the influence of abusive supervision on public servants. By employing Hayes' Process macro and investigating a cohort of 468 US public servants, we found that abusive supervision is positively related to turnover intention via psychological distress. Notably, the adverse impact of abusive supervision is more pronounced among subordinates with a strong person-organization fit. Given the prevailing retention challenges in the public sector, our research offers novel insights into retaining well-matched personnel through the cultivation of positive workplace social connections. This article considers the influence that assessment exerts on poetry education. By means of research conducted in a post-16 educational context in Malta, it shows that teachers' and students' practices in the poetry lesson are determined by the kind of examinations that candidates sit for. When the mode of assessment is constituted solely by the traditional essay test that excludes students' personal response, their engagement with poetry might be impaired and teachers' role becomes highly pronounced. The article demonstrates how assessment plays a key role in governing teachers' and students' practices in the classroom. However, it is also argued that other factors are equally responsible for their approach to poetry.

The contemporary geopolitical environment and strategic uncertainty shaped by asymmetric and hybrid threats urge the future development of hands-on training in realistic environments. Training in immersive, virtual environments is a promising approach. Immersive training can support training for contexts that are otherwise hard to access, dangerous, or have high costs. This paper discusses the challenges for virtual reality training in the CBRN (chemical, biological, radioactive, nuclear) domain. Based on initial considerations and a literature review, we conducted a survey and three workshops to gather requirements for CBRN training in virtual environments. We structured the gathered insights into four overarching themes—the future of CBRN training, ethical and safety requirements, evaluation and feedback, and tangible objects and tools. We provide insights on these four themes and discuss recommendations.

ABSTRACT The role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of Shigella flexneri remains largely unknown. To understand the impact of the gut microbiota on S. flexneri virulence, we examined the effect of interspecies interactions with Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a prominent member of the gut microbiota, on S. flexneri invasion. When grown in B. thetaiotaomicron-conditioned medium, S. flexneri showed reduced invasion of human epithelial cells. This decrease in invasiveness of S. flexneri resulted from a reduction in the level of the S. flexneri master virulence regulator VirF. Reduction of VirF corresponded with a decrease in expression of a secondary virulence regulator, virB, as well as expression of S. flexneri virulence genes required for invasion, intracellular motility, and spread. Repression of S. flexneri virulence factors by B. thetaiotaomicron-conditioned medium was not caused by either a secreted metabolite or secreted protein but rather was due to the presence of B. thetaiotaomicron outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) in the conditioned medium. The addition of purified B. thetaiotaomicron OMVs to S. flexneri growth medium recapitulated the inhibitory effects of B. thetaiotaomicron-conditioned medium on invasion, virulence gene expression, and virulence protein levels. Total lipids extracted from either B. thetaiotaomicron cells or B. thetaiotaomicron OMVs also recapitulated the effects of B. thetaiotaomicron-conditioned medium on expression of the S. flexneri virulence factor IpaC, indicating that B. thetaiotaomicron OMV lipids, rather than a cargo contained in the vesicles, are the active factor responsible for the inhibition of S. flexneri virulence. IMPORTANCE Shigella flexneri is the causative agent of bacillary dysentery in humans. Shigella spp. are one of the leading causes of diarrheal morbidity and mortality, especially among children in low- and middle-income countries. The rise of antimicrobial resistance combined with the lack of an effective vaccine for Shigella heightens the importance of studies aimed at better understanding previously uncharacterized aspects of Shigella pathogenesis. Here, we show that conditioned growth medium from the commensal bacterium Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron represses the invasion of S. flexneri. This repression is due to the presence of B. thetaiotaomicron outer membrane vesicles. These findings establish a role for interspecies interactions with a prominent member of the gut microbiota in modulating the virulence of S. flexneri and identify a novel function of outer membrane vesicles in interbacterial signaling between members of the gut microbiota and an enteric pathogen.

Olympic-style sliding-seat rowing is a sport that has been extensively researched, with studies investigating aspects related to the physiology, biomechanics, kinematics, and the performance of rowers. In contrast, studies on the more classic form of fixed-seat rowing are sparse. The aim of this study is to address this lacuna by analysing for the first time the specific kinematics of fixed-seat rowing as practised by able-bodied athletes, thus (i) documenting how this technique is performed in a manner that is replicable by others and (ii) showing how this technique compares and contrasts with the more standard sliding-seat technique. Fixed-seat rowing was replicated in a biomechanics laboratory where experienced fixed-seat rowers, marked with reflective markers following the modified Helen–Hayes model, were asked to row in a manner that mimics rowing on a fixed-seat boat. The findings from this study, complimented with data gathered through the observation of athletes rowing on water, were compared to sliding-seat ergometer rowing and other control experiments. The results show that, in fixed-seat rowing, there is more forward and backward thoracic movement than in sliding-seat rowing (75–77° vs. 44–52°, p < 0.0005). Tilting of the upper body stems was noted to result from rotations around the pelvis, as in sliding-seat rowing, rather than from spinal movements. The results also confirmed knee flexion in fixed-seat rowing with a range of motion of 30–35°. This is less pronounced than in standard-seat rowing, but not insignificant. These findings provide a biomechanical explanation as to why fixed-seat rowers do not have an increased risk of back injuries when compared with their sliding-seat counterparts. They also provide athletes, coaches, and related personnel with precise and detailed information of how fixed-seat rowing is performed so that they may formulate better and more specific evidence-based training programs to meliorate technique and performance.

# Background Consideration of psychological factors towards exercise participation is important, especially when placed within a cultural context. # Objective The aim of this study was to translate the Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale and Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 to Maltese and undertake psychometric testing. # Methods Maltese-speaking participants (n = 170) aged 18 to 69 years were recruited. 72% completed both questionnaires twice within an 8-to 48-hour period. Reliability was calculated using the Spearman correlation, intraclass correlation coefficient, and Bland–Altman plots. Convergent construct validity was tested using Spearman correlation between theoretical variables. # Results In total 155 participants completed the questionnaires at both time points. The test/re-test reliability of the two questionnaires was >0.7 for all analyses. Correlations for validity were statistically significant (p < 0.05). # Conclusion The translated tools have similar psychometric properties to the original version; the authors recommend that health care professionals and physical activity practitioners use these tools when examining population-level physical activity behaviour among Maltese-speaking individuals.
