In this paper, we present a novel polylactic-acid/flax-composite substrate and the implementation of a demonstrator: a microcontroller board based on commercial design. The substrate is developed for printed circuit board (PCB) applications. The pre-preg is biodegradable, reinforced, and flame-retarded. The novel material was developed to counter the increasing amount of e-waste and to improve the sustainability of the microelectronics sector. The motivation was to present a working circuit in commercial complexity that can be implemented on a rigid substrate made of natural, bio-based materials with a structure very similar to the widely used Flame Retardant Class 4 (FR4) substrate at an early technological readiness level (2–3). The circuit design is based on the Arduino Nano open-source microcontroller board design so that the demonstration could be programmable and easy to fit into education, IoT applications, and embedded designs. During the work, the design was optimized at the level of layout. The copper-clad pre-preg was then prepared and processed with subtractive printed wiring technology and through hole plating. The traditional surface mounting methodology was applied for assembly. The resulting yield of PCB production was around 50%. Signal analysis was successful with analogue data acquisition (voltage) and low-frequency (4 kHz) tests, indistinguishable from sample FR4 boards. Eventually, the samples were subjected to highly accelerated stress test (HAST). HAST tests revealed limitations compared to traditional FR4 printed circuit materials. After six cycles, the weight loss was around 30% in the case of PLA/Flax, and as three-point bending tests showed, the possible ultimate strength (25 MPa at a flexural state) was reduced by 80%. Finally, the sustainability aspect was assessed, where we found that ∼95 vol% and ∼90 wt% of the traditional substrate can be substituted, significantly easing the load of waste on the environment. The High Efficiency and Resolution Multi Element Spectrograph, HERMES, is a facility-class optical spectrograph for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). It is designed primarily for Galactic Archaeology, the first major attempt to create a detailed understanding of galaxy formation and evolution by studying the history of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The goal of the GALAH survey is to reconstruct the mass assembly history of the Milky Way through a detailed chemical abundance study of one million stars. The spectrograph is based at the AAT and is fed by the existing 2dF robotic fiber positioning system. The spectrograph uses volume phase holographic gratings to achieve a spectral resolving power of 28,000 in standard mode and also provides a high-resolution mode ranging between 40,000 and 50,000 using a slit mask. The GALAH survey requires an SNR greater than 100 for a star brightness of V ?= 14 in an exposure time of one hour. The total spectral coverage of the four channels is about 100 nm between 370 and 1000 nm for up to 392 simultaneous targets within the 2-degree field of view. HERMES has been commissioned over three runs, during bright time in October, November, and December 2013, in parallel with the beginning of the GALAH pilot survey, which started in November 2013. We present the first-light results from the commissioning run and the beginning of the GALAH survey, including performance results such as throughput and resolution, as well as instrument reliability., Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures. Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
PRAXIS is a second generation instrument that follows on from GNOSIS, which was the first instrument using fibre Bragg gratings for OH background suppression. The Bragg gratings reflect the NIR OH lines while being transparent to light between the lines. This gives a much higher signal-noise ratio at low resolution but also at higher resolutions by removing the scattered wings of the OH lines. The specifications call for high throughput and very low thermal and detector noise so that PRAXIS will remain sky noise limited. The optical train is made of fore-optics, an IFU, a fibre bundle, the Bragg grating unit, a second fibre bundle and a spectrograph. GNOSIS used the pre-existing IRIS2 spectrograph while PRAXIS will use a new spectrograph specifically designed for the fibre Bragg grating OH suppression and optimised for 1470 nm to 1700 nm (it can also be used in the 1090 nm to 1260 nm band by changing the grating and refocussing). This results in a significantly higher transmission due to high efficiency coatings, a VPH grating at low incident angle and low absorption glasses. The detector noise will also be lower. Throughout the PRAXIS design special care was taken at every step along the optical path to reduce thermal emission or stop it leaking into the system. This made the spectrograph design challenging because practical constraints required that the detector and the spectrograph enclosures be physically separate by air at ambient temperature. At present, the instrument uses the GNOSIS fibre Bragg grating OH suppression unit. We intend to soon use a new OH suppression unit based on multicore fibre Bragg gratings which will allow increased field of view per fibre. Theoretical calculations show that the gain in interline sky background signal-noise ratio over GNOSIS may very well be as high as 9 with the GNOSIS OH suppression unit and 17 with the multicore fibre OH suppression unit., Comment: SPIE conference proceedings 9151

Objectives: In the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, development of insulin resistance triggers an increase in pancreatic β-cell insulin secretion capacity and β-cell number. Failure of this compensatory mechanism is caused by a dedifferentiation of β-cells, which leads to insufficient insulin secretion and diabetic hyperglycemia. The β-cell factors that normally protect against dedifferentiation remain poorly defined. Here, through a systems biology approach, we identify the transcription factor Klf6 as a regulator of β-cell adaptation to metabolic stress. Methods: We used a β-cell specific Klf6 knockout mouse model to investigate whether Klf6 may be a potential regulator of β-cell adaptation to a metabolic stress. Results: We show that inactivation of Klf6 in β-cells blunts their proliferation induced by the insulin resistance of pregnancy, high-fat high-sucrose feeding, and insulin receptor antagonism. Transcriptomic analysis showed that Klf6 controls the expression of β-cell proliferation genes and, in the presence of insulin resistance, it prevents the down-expression of genes controlling mature β-cell identity and the induction of disallowed genes that impair insulin secretion. Its expression also limits the transdifferentiation of β-cells into α-cells. Conclusion: Our study identifies a new transcription factor that protects β-cells against dedifferentiation, and which may be targeted to prevent diabetes development. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes, Insulin resistance, β-Cell proliferation, Dedifferentiation, Transdifferentiation

Not a day goes by without the issue of global warming and the depletion of the planet’s resources being addressed in the media. And it is clear that the societal and environmental challenges posed are of considerable magnitude because we all must drastically reduce our carbon footprint. At the same time, the amount of data exchanged around the world is constantly increasing. Do we need to be reminded once again of the extent to which our global data infrastructures have made it possible, and are still making it possible, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic with all the necessary strength?

This paper presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a compact narrowband tunable impedance-matching network. A prototype was fabricated in hybrid technology using coplanar waveguide transmission lines and surface-mounted components. The network consists of a II-structure with tunable components made of varactors in series with inductors. Simulations and measurements are in good agreement. A new measurement methodology suitable for tunable impedance-matching networks is proposed. The results show that complex impedances with magnitudes varying from 6 [OMEGA] to 1 k[OMEGA] can be matched at 1 GHz and tuned in a 50% bandwidth. In addition, nonlinear measurements were done to fully characterize the network. The l-dB compression point is reached at an input power of 20 dBm, while the input power for the third-order intermodulation intercept point is 21.3 dBm for a 1-kHz offset between the two input frequencies.

International audience; This paper introduces a novel approach for the assessment electromagnetic susceptibility of coaxial cables. In this work, a numerical model of the bulk current injection (BCI) fixture is considered. This fixture injects a current on the shield of the cable in order to produce electromagnetic interferences (EMI) and to extract the shielding features. An efficient and simple model is provided to avoid expensive prototyping steps. In addition, while the noise limits the interpretation of experimental data, the numerical modelling enables the consideration of a clear electromagnetic environment. Numerical and experimental results are compared for a sample of coaxial cable.

Simulations are used for a microstrip line that apply both the classical model of London and the bipolaron model. The agreement observed reveals that both models can be used up to T=0.98 T(sub c), but with different values of lambda(0). An accurate analytical expression of the external, internal and kinetic inductances of superconducting lines has been derived. Comparison of the modeled results and experimental data on a microstrip line is given.

International audience; Interactions between electromagnetic (EM) fields or currents and living cells constitute a recurrent subject of interest for several decades, and their effects have been profusely discussed [1], especially for the frequency bands currently encountered in everyday life of humans. In a more restrictive domain, large number of studies have been done, focused on EM modelling of a bacteria medium, in order to predict the EM field penetration and inner induced currents in living microorganisms. Relevant information to be collected deals with level and frequency of the EM signal that may affect the development of the considered cells. The former because non-thermal effects are nowadays suspected to exist, altering cell's metabolism, the latter because it is well known that the spectral response of the living cell impedance exhibits some dispersion in relation with cell membrane behaviour and shield effects [2]. It appears that these parameters may be strongly sensitive to shape, dimensions and orientation of bacterial cells in relation to the applied electric field orientation. The present paper aims to examine this problem and brings a streamlined lighting. This is done through the elaboration of a simplified equivalent electric circuit, supported by a prior COMSOL TM analysis and a stochastic approach. Analysis: The bacterium selected to test our approach is Escherichia coli DH5α. A first model, suitable for the required level of resolution, may be a 2±1 µm long and 0.5±0.2 µm wide cylinder filled with physiological fluid and surrounded by a dielectric membrane of thickness 50 nm. The medium is considered also as a physiological fluid. Figure 1 shows the COMSOL TM model, with possible orientations for the external applied electric field, assuming that the field is provided through the application of an AC voltage between two plane parallel electrodes. A simplified equivalent circuit, similar to those explicited in the literature [2], can then be extracted from COMSOL TM computation, where capacitance and resistor values depend on size and orientation (Figure 2). Next, the equivalent circuit for the overall medium, containing the suspended bacterial cells, is deduced, taking into account the concentration and the orientation of bacteria, as well as the electrodes/medium interface. Results: As an example of interesting result, Figure 3 shows the admittance of a bacterium longitudinally oriented with the electric field. It reveals the well-known shield effect at lower frequencies. The final paper will relate other relevant parameters as inner current in the microorganism. Variations according to the size and orientation of bacteria will be detailed for both uniform and non-uniform media, supported by a stochastic analysis.

The French Institute for Public Health Surveillance set up two communities based surveys which provide both Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The first one, the ANRS-Coquelicot survey, studied in 2011-2013 drug users (DUs) who attend specialized structures in health care and risk reduction. The second survey, Prevagay, concerned men who have sex with men (MSM) who attended Paris gay venues in 2009. Persons recruited for both surveys were invited to collect a fingerprick whole blood sample on filter paper, and to respond to a behavioral questionnaire. This questionnaire was anonymous and administered by interviewers for DUs, and self-completed for MSM. Blood samples were screened for the presence of HBs Ag using the Monolisa HBs Ag ULTRA (Biorad®) assay. Among the 647 DUs and the 876 MSM investigated in Paris and included in the analysis, 15 DUs and 12 MSM were diagnosed HBs Ag-positive, representing HBs Ag seroprevalence of 2.1% (IC95% [1.0-4.2]) and 1.4%,respectively. In these two specific populations, different in terms of socio-demographic profiles, and both at risk of HBV transmission, due to their drug use practices or their sexual behaviors, HBs Ag seroprevalence was closeto the one observed in the general population., L’Institut de veille sanitaire a mené deux études de séroprévalence de l’antigène HBs (AgHBs) en populations spécifiques.

- Abstract
ULTIMATE is an instrument concept under development at the AAO, for the Subaru Telescope, which will have the unique combination of ground layer adaptive optics feeding multiple deployable integral field units. This will allow ULTIMATE to probe unexplored parameter space, enabling science cases such as the evolution of galaxies at z ∼ 0.5 to 1.5, and the dark matter content of the inner part of our Galaxy. ULTIMATE will use Starbugs to position between 7 and 13 IFUs over a 14 x 8 arcmin field-of-view, provided by a new wide-field corrector. All Starbugs can be positioned simultaneously, to an accuracy of better than 5 milli-arcsec within the typical slew-time of the telescope, allowing for very efficient re-configuration between observations. The IFUs will feed either the near-infrared nuMOIRCS or the visible/ near-infrared PFS spectrographs, or both. Future possible upgrades include the possibility of purpose built spectrographs and incorporating OH suppression using fibre Bragg gratings. We describe the science case and resulting design requirements, the baseline instrument concept, and the expected performance of the instrument.
