We present a comparative study of turbulence transport in two optimized stellarator configurations: Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and a recent design called Quasi-Symmetric Turbulence Konzept (QSTK). Using global gyrokinetic simulations with the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC), we explore the role of zonal flows (ZFs) in suppressing electrostatic Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) driven turbulence in both configurations. The simulations reveal that ZFs significantly reduce ion heat transport in both W7-X and QSTK, with a more pronounced impact on the latter configuration, as suggested by the apparently higher linear threshold ("critical") gradients for ITG modes. The study also highlights that, while both stellarators exhibit similar mode structures, the reduced ITG growth rates in QSTK contribute to the better performance regarding turbulence suppression, particularly at larger temperature gradients. The results support the notion that linear stability measures, in combination with nonlinear stabilization by zonal flows, can play an important role in the suppression of nonlinear heat fluxes., Comment: 13 pages, 8 Figures

The stellarator is a type of fusion energy device that - if properly designed - could provide clean, safe, and abundant energy to the grid. To generate this energy, a stellarator must keep a hot mixture of charged particles (known as a plasma) sufficiently confined by using a fully shaped magnetic field. If this is achieved, the heat from fusion reactions within the plasma can be harvested as energy. We present a novel method for designing reactor-relevant stellarator magnetic fields, which combine several key physical properties. These include plasma stability, excellent confinement of the fast moving particles generated by fusion reactions, and reduction of the turbulence that is known to limit the performance of the most advanced stellarator experiment in the world, Wendelstein 7-X., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Integrating turbulence into stellarator optimization is shown by targeting the onset for the ion-temperature-gradient mode, highlighting effects of parallel connection length, local magnetic shear, and flux surface expansion. The result is a compact quasihelically symmetric stellarator configuration, admitting a set of uncomplicated coils, with significantly reduced turbulent heat fluxes compared to a known stellarator. The new configuration combines low values of neoclassical transport, good alpha particle confinement, and Mercier stability at a plasma beta of almost 2$\%$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Phys. Rev. We present a stellarator configuration optimized for a large threshold (``critical gradient'') for the onset of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven mode, which achieves the largest critical gradient we have seen in any stellarator. Above this threshold, gyrokinetic simulations show that the configuration has low turbulence levels over an experimentally relevant range of the drive strength. The applied optimization seeks to maximize the drift curvature, leading to enhanced local-shear stabilization of toroidal ITG modes, and the associated turbulence. These benefits are combined with excellent quasisymmetry, yielding low neoclassical transport and vanishingly small alpha particle losses. We present a modified gyrokinetic theory to predict the critical gradient that determines the linear onset of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode in stellarator plasmas. A coarse-graining technique is applied to the drift curvature, entering the standard gyrokinetic equations, around local minima. Thanks to its simplicity, this novel formalism yields an estimate for the critical gradient with a computational cost low enough for application to stellarator optimization. On comparing against a gyrokinetic solver, our results show good agreement for an assortment of stellarator designs. Insight gained here into the physics of the onset of the ITG driven instability enables us to devise a compact configuration, similar to the Wendelstein 7-X device, but with almost twice the ITG linear critical gradient, an improved nonlinear critical gradient, and reduced ITG mode transport above the nonlinear critical gradient., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. The first experimental campaigns have proven that, due to the optimization of the magnetic configuration with respect to neoclassical transport, the contribution of turbulence is essential to understand and predict the total particle and energy transport in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). This has spurred much work on gyrokinetic modelling for the interpretation of the available experimental results and for the preparation of the next campaigns. At the same time, new stellarator gyrokinetic codes have just been or are being developed. It is therefore desirable to have a sufficiently complete, documented and verified set of gyrokinetic simulations in W7-X geometry against which new codes or upgrades of existing codes can be tested and benchmarked. This paper attemps to provide such a set of simulations in the form of a comprehensive benchmark between the recently developed code stella and the well-established code GENE. The benchmark consists of electrostatic gyrokinetic simulations in W7-X magnetic geometry and includes different flux tubes, linear ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) and trapped-electron-mode (TEM)} stability analyses, computation of linear zonal flow responses and calculation of ITG-driven heat fluxes.

A first-principles method to calculate the critical temperature gradient for the onset of the ion-temperature-gradient mode (ITG) in linear gyrokinetics is presented. We find that conventional notions of the connection length previously invoked in tokamak research should be revised and replaced by a generalized correlation length to explain this onset in stellarators. Simple numerical experiments and gyrokinetic theory show that localized "spikes" in shear, a hallmark of stellarator geometry, are generally insufficient to constrain the parallel correlation length of the mode. ITG modes that localize within bad drift curvature wells that have a critical gradient set by peak drift curvature are also observed. A case study of nearly helical stellarators of increasing field period demonstrates that the critical gradient can indeed be controlled by manipulating magnetic geometry, but underscores the need for a general framework to evaluate the critical gradient. We conclude that average curvature and global shear set the correlation length of resonant ITG modes near the absolute critical gradient, the physics of which is included through direct solution of the gyrokinetic equation. Our method, which handles general geometry and is more efficient than conventional gyrokinetic solvers, could be applied to future studies of stellarator ITG turbulence optimization., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. In stellarators, zonal flow activity depends sensitively on geometry of the three dimensional magnetic field, via an interplay of mechanisms that is not fully understood. In this work, we investigate this by studying three magnetic configurations of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. We find that variation in linear zonal flow damping is accompanied by variation in nonlinear drive, and identify key geometric features that control these effects. Background: Promising results for mammary carcinoma treatment with photodynamic therapy (PDT) presuppose a careful selection of irradiation light wavelength. Methods: 4T1 tumors implanted in NOD-SCID mice were treated with Metvix-PDT under 625 nm, 660 nm and their combination light, for a fixed radiant exposure. The therapeutic outcome was assessed through Monte Carlo based computational simulations along with a preliminary in vivo study, where fluorescence, size and temperature measurements were conducted. Results: The light source combination protocol presents great potential, since it results in high cytotoxic products levels and reduced treatment times; while the in vivo findings, regarding the harvested tumor mass, also support this hypothesis. The irradiation with 625 nm beam alone presented better results for most of the in vivo measured parameters. The mouse treated with only the 660 nm light source had the highest un-photobleached photosensitizer (PS) signal, the lowest body temperature, the heaviest harvested tumor and the lowest estimated concentration of PDT cytotoxic products. Conclusions: The use of 625 nm irradiation light matches the PS excitation band but is preferable only for treatment of superficial tumors. For deeper laying masses, the simultaneous use of longer wavelengths enhances the therapeutic outcome due to their increased penetration depth., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Continuous technology scaling and the introduction of advanced technology nodes in Integrated Circuit (IC) fabrication is constantly exposing new manufacturability issues. One such issue, stemming from complex interaction between design and process, is the problem of design hotspots. Such hotspots are known to vary from design to design and, ideally, should be predicted early and corrected in the design stage itself, as opposed to relying on the foundry to develop process fixes for every hotspot, which would be intractable. In the past, various efforts have been made to address this issue by using a known database of hotspots as the source of information. The majority of these efforts use either Machine Learning (ML) or Pattern Matching (PM) techniques to identify and predict hotspots in new incoming designs. However, almost all of them suffer from high false-alarm rates, mainly because they are oblivious to the root causes of hotspots. In this work, we seek to address this limitation by using a novel database enhancement approach through synthetic pattern generation based on carefully crafted Design of Experiments (DOEs). Effectiveness of the proposed method against the state-of-the-art is evaluated on a 45nm process using industry-standard tools and designs.

We study the effect of turbulent transport in different magnetic configurations of the Weldenstein 7-X stellarator. In particular, we performed direct numerical simulations with the global gyrokinetic code GENE-3D, modeling the behavior of Ion Temperature Gradient turbulence in the Standard, High-Mirror, and Low-Mirror configurations of W7-X. We found that the Low-Mirror configuration produces more transport than both the High-Mirror and the Standard configurations. By comparison with radially local simulations, we have demonstrated the importance of performing global nonlinear simulations to predict the turbulent fluxes quantitatively.

In fusion devices, the geometry of the confining magnetic field has a significant impact on the instabilities that drive turbulent heat loss. This is especially true of stellarators, where the "trapped electron mode" (TEM) is stabilised if specific optimisation criteria are satisfied, as in the Wendelstein 7-X experiment (W7-X). Here we find, by numerical simulation, that W7-X indeed has low TEM-driven transport, and also benefits from stabilisation of the ion-temperature-gradient mode, giving theoretical support for the existence of enhanced confinement regimes at finite density gradients.

Flux tube simulations of plasma turbulence in stellarators and tokamaks typically employ coordinates which are aligned with the magnetic field lines. Anisotropic turbulent fluctuations can be represented in such field-aligned coordinates very efficiently, but the resulting non-trivial boundary conditions involve all three spatial directions, and must be handled with care. The standard "twist-and-shift" formulation of the boundary conditions [Beer, Cowley, Hammett \textit{Phys. Plasmas} \textbf{2}, 2687 (1995)] was derived assuming axisymmetry and is widely used because it is efficient, as long as the global magnetic shear is not too small. A generalization of this formulation is presented, appropriate for studies of non-axisymmetric, stellarator-symmetric configurations, as well as for axisymmetric configurations with small global shear. The key idea is to replace the "twist" of the standard approach (which accounts only for global shear) with the integrated local shear. This generalization allows one significantly more freedom when choosing the extent of the simulation domain in each direction, without losing the natural efficiency of field-line-following coordinates. It also corrects errors associated with naive application of axisymmetric boundary conditions to non-axisymmetric configurations. Simulations of stellarator turbulence that employ the generalized boundary conditions require much less resolution than simulations that use the (incorrect, axisymmetric) boundary conditions. We also demonstrate the surprising result that (at least in some cases) an easily implemented but manifestly incorrect formulation of the boundary conditions does {\it not} change important predicted quantities, such as the turbulent heat flux.

In the complex 3D magnetic fields of stellarators, ion-temperature-gradient turbulence is shown to have two distinct saturation regimes, as revealed by petascale numerical simulations, and explained by a simple turbulence theory. The first regime is marked by strong zonal flows, and matches previous observations in tokamaks. The newly observed second regime, in contrast, exhibits small- scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence, negligible zonal flows, and, surprisingly, a weaker heat flux scaling. Within the setup of continuous-time semimartingale financial markets, we show that a multiprior Gilboa-Schmeidler minimax expected utility maximizer forms a portfolio consisting only of the riskless asset if and only if among the investor's priors there exists a probability measure under which all admissible wealth processes are supermartingales. Furthermore, we show that under a certain attainability condition (which is always valid in finite or complete markets) this is also equivalent to the existence of an equivalent (local) martingale measure among the investor's priors. As an example, we generalize a no betting result due to Dow and Werlang.

With the advent of neoclassically optimised stellarators, optimising stellarators for turbulent transport is an important next step. The reduction of ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence has been achieved via shaping of the magnetic field, and the reduction of trapped-electron mode (TEM) turbulence is adressed in the present paper. Recent analytical and numerical findings suggest TEMs are stabilised when a large fraction of trapped particles experiences favourable bounce-averaged curvature. This is the case for example in Wendelstein 7-X [C.D. Beidler $\textit{et al}$ Fusion Technology $\bf{17}$, 148 (1990)] and other Helias-type stellarators. Using this knowledge, a proxy function was designed to estimate the TEM dynamics, allowing optimal configurations for TEM stability to be determined with the STELLOPT [D.A. Spong $\textit{et al}$ Nucl. Fusion $\bf{41}$, 711 (2001)] code without extensive turbulence simulations. A first proof-of-principle optimised equilibrium stemming from the TEM-dominated stellarator experiment HSX [F.S.B. Anderson $\textit{et al}$, Fusion Technol. $\bf{27}$, 273 (1995)] is presented for which a reduction of the linear growth rates is achieved over a broad range of the operational parameter space. As an important consequence of this property, the turbulent heat flux levels are reduced compared with the initial configuration.

Turbulence induced by the ion temperature gradient (ITG) is investigated in the helical and axisymmetric plasma states of a reversed field pinch device by means of gyrokinetic calculations. The two magnetic configurations are systematically compared, both linearly and nonlinearly, in order to evaluate the impact of the geometry on the instability and its ensuing transport, as well as on the production of zonal flows. Despite its enhanced confinement, the high-current helical state demonstrates a lower ITG stability threshold compared to the axisymmetric state, and ITG turbulence is expected to become an important contributor to the total heat transport., Comment: 8 pages, to appear in Phys. The turbulence observed in the scrape-off-layer of a tokamak is often characterized by intermittent events of bursty nature, a feature which raises concerns about the prediction of heat loads on the physical boundaries of the device. It appears thus necessary to delve into the statistical properties of turbulent physical fields such as density, electrostatic potential and temperature, focusing on the mathematical expression of tails of the probability distribution functions. The method followed here is to generate statistical information from time-traces of the plasma density stemming from Braginskii-type fluid simulations, and check this against a first-principles theoretical model. The analysis of the numerical simulations indicates that the probability distribution function of the intermittent process contains strong exponential tails, as predicted by the analytical theory., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures
