The ignition and extinction characteristics of perchlorate-based electrically controlled solid propellants (ECSPs) that can achieve multiple ignition and produce controllable thrusts were investigated. We examined the multiple-ignition and combustion behaviors of ECSPs and identified the basic ignition-model parameters for these materials. Single-frame photography and a schlieren imaging system were used to determine the ignition, combustion, and extinction properties of two different ECSP formulations at various voltages, pressures, and initial temperatures. The results revealed that increasing the voltage, pressure, and initial temperature reduced the ignition delay; whereas increasing the number of ignitions decreased the ignition delay and ignition energy but increased the extinction delay and smoldering time. Furthermore, under the same experimental conditions, the voltage, pressure, and initial temperature produced a larger effect on a nonmetallic ECSP than on an ECSP containing 5% aluminum (Al) powder. The nonmetallic ECSP exhibited a longer ignition delay, higher ignition energy, and better extinguishing performance than the Al-containing ECSP. Moreover, four distinct stages of the ECSP ignition process were identified. The findings of this study demonstrated that the electrical energy consumed during condensed phase heating plays a critical role in propellant ignition.

Purposes: Braided and laser-cut stents both are efficacious and safe for coiling intracranial aneurysms. The study aimed to compare outcomes following braided stent-assisted coil embolization versus laser engraved stent-assisted coil embolization in 266 patients who were diagnosed with unruptured intracranial aneurysms of different types and locations. Methods: Patients with unruptured complex intracranial aneurysms underwent braided (BSE cohort, n = 125) or laser engraved (LSE cohort, n = 141) stent-assisted embolization. Results: The deployment success rate was higher for patients of the LSE cohort than those of the BSE cohort (140 [99%] vs. 117 [94%], p = 0.0142). Seventy-one (fifty-seven percentages) and 73 (52%) were coil embolization procedure success rates of the BSE and the LSE cohorts. Periprocedural intracranial hemorrhage was higher in patients of the BSE cohort than those of the LSE cohort (8 [6%] vs. 1 [1%], p = 0.0142). Four (three percentages) patients from the LSE cohort and 3 (2%) patients from the BSE cohort had in-stent thrombosis during embolization. Permanent morbidities were higher in patients of the LSE cohort than those of the BSE cohort (8 [6%] vs. 1 [1%], p = 0.0389). Higher successful procedures (76% vs. 68%) and fewer postprocedural intracranial hemorrhage (0% vs. 5%) and mortality (0% vs. 5%) were reported for patients of the BSE cohort in posterior circulation aneurysmal location than those of the LSE cohort. Laser engraved stent has fewer problems with deployment and may have better periprocedural and follow-up outcomes after embolization. Conclusions: Braided stent-assisted embolization should be preferred when the aneurysm is present in the posterior circulation.

This cohort study sought to investigate the effects of phthalates exposure during pregnancy on offspring asthma and its association with placental stress and inflammatory factor mRNA expression levels. A total of 3474 pregnant women from the China Ma'anshan birth cohort participated in this study. Seven phthalate metabolites were detected in urine samples during pregnancy by solid phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Placenta stress and inflammation mRNA expression were assessed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Early pregnancy may be the critical period when phthalates exposure increases the risk of asthma in infants and young children, and there is a certain gender difference in the risk of asthma in infants and young children. Moreover, through the placenta stress and inflammatory factor associated with infant asthma found anti-inflammatory factor of interleukin-10 (IL-10) mRNA expression will reduce the risk of 36-month-old male infant asthma. The expression of interleukin-4(IL-4) and macrophage (M2) biomarker cluster of differentiation 206(CD206) mRNA reduced the risk of asthma in 18-month-old female infants. Placental stress and inflammatory response were analyzed using mediating effects. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) showed a complete mediating effect between mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) exposure in early pregnancy and asthma in 12-month-old males, and IL-10 also showed a complete mediating effect between mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) exposure in early and late pregnancy and asthma in 36-month-old males. In summary, exposure to phthalates during pregnancy may contribute to the development of asthma in infants, which may be associated with placental stress and inflammation.

In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze the serum of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to explore the screening value of Raman spectroscopy in patients with early RA. 216 patients were included in the study. Fasting venous blood was collected for routine biochemical detection, and the remaining samples were tested by serum Raman spectroscopy. Support vector machine (SVM) was used for model building and training. The area under the curve (AUC) values of the model were as follows: (1) healthy group vs early RA group: 0.860, (2) healthy group vs non-early RA group: 0.903, (3) early RA group vs non-early RA group: 0.918. This study shows that serum Raman spectroscopy has a good ability to screen RA and can be staged according to the course of the disease, which can provide new ideas and technical support for the diagnosis or screening of early RA. In this study, starting from the elastic optical network, the layered and function isolated service-oriented architecture (SOA) is introduced, so as to propose an elastic optical network SOA for cloud computing, and further study the resource mapping of optical network. Linear mapping model, random routing mapping algorithm, load balancing mapping algorithm and link separation mapping algorithm are introduced respectively, and the resource utilization effect of different mapping algorithms for the proposed optical network is compared. During the experiment, firstly, the elastic optical network is tested. It is found that the node utilization and spectrum utilization of the underlying optical fiber level network are significantly improved. Within the average service time of 0.312 s∼0.416 s, the corresponding node utilization and spectrum utilization are 90% and 80% respectively. In the resource mapping experiment, load balancing algorithm and link separation algorithm can effectively improve the mapping success rate of services. Among them, the link separation mapping algorithm can improve the spectrum resource utilization of optical network by 15.6%. The elastic optical network SOA proposed in this study is helpful to improve the use of network resources.

Studies on the impact of Se levels in different pregnancy periods on placental function are limited. This cohort study sought to investigate the levels of the trace element Se and to assess their effects on placental oxidative stress (OS) and mRNA expression of inflammatory genes during pregnancy. The study population consisted of 2519 pregnant women from the Ma’anshan birth cohort. Se levels were measured in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy and in cord blood using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Placental stress and mRNA expression of inflammatory genes were assessed using RT-PCR. A statistically significant negative association was noted between Se levels in the second trimester of pregnancy and mRNA expression of placental HO-1(β = −0.009, p < .01), HIF1α (β = −0.005, p = .010), GRP78 (β = −0.011, p < .001), CRP (β = −.007, p = .033) and CD68 (β = −0.006, p = .019). A negative association was noted between Se levels in cord blood and mRNA expression of placental HO-1 (β = −0.007, p = .004), HIF1α (β = −0.006, p = .005) and GRP78 (β = −0.009, p = .004). We found that prenatal Se status was associated with placental stress and mRNA expression of inflammatory genes. Se deficiency during pregnancy, especially in the second trimester, leads to the production of OS and an increase in inflammatory mediators, affecting the growth and development of the fetus. Monitoring of pregnant women’s nutritional status is necessary to prevent nutritional imbalances and deficiencies in important micronutrients in the fetal.

Prenatal phthalate exposure has been associated with placental inflammatory factors and infant allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the results are inconclusive. We designed a population-based cohort study to examine the effects of placental inflammatory biomarkers on the sex-dependent associations between maternal phthalate exposure and infant AR.A total of 2,348 pregnant women from Ma'anshan, Anhui Province, China, who were screened before antenatal visits and met the inclusion criteria, were included in the present study. We assessed AR in their offspring aged 36 months with a questionnaire. Quantitative PCR was performed to measure placental inflammatory factor mRNAs. The independent samplesChildhood AR may be related to education and family monthly income (The associations of maternal MEHHP and MEOHP levels with fetal AR in males were significant. Placental HO-1 was a fractional mediator in the associations between MEHHP and AR. Thus, the placenta should be further investigated as a potential mediator of maternal exposure-induced disease risk in children.

Spiral waves occur in various types of excitable media and their dynamics determine the spatial excitation patterns. An important type of spiral wave dynamics is drift, as it can control the position of a spiral wave or eliminate a spiral wave by forcing it to the boundary. In theoretical and experimental studies of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, it was shown that the most direct way to induce the controlled drift of spiral waves is by application of an external electric field. Mathematically such drift occurs due to the onset of additional gradient terms in the Laplacian operator describing excitable media. However, this approach does not work for cardiac excitable tissue, where an external electric field does not result in gradient terms. In this paper, we propose a method of how to induce a directed linear drift of spiral waves in cardiac tissue, which can be realized as an optical feedback control in tissue where photosensitive ion channels are expressed. We illustrate our method by using the FitzHugh-Nagumo model for cardiac tissue and the generic model of photosensitive ion channels. We show that our method works for continuous and discrete light sources and can effectively move spiral waves in cardiac tissue, or eliminate them by collisions with the boundary or with another spiral wave. We finally implement our method by using a biophysically motivated photosensitive ion channel model included to the Luo-Rudy model for cardiac cells and show that the proposed feedback control also induces directed linear drift of spiral waves in a wide range of light intensities.

High blood glucose has been noted in case reports of acute thallium poisoning, however, effects of low-level exposure of thallium on risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has not been explored yet.We aimed to explore the association of serum thallium concentration (STC) in early pregnancy and risk of GDM.Data of 3013 women from the Ma'anshan birth cohort study (MABC), China was used. STC was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Multivariate logistic regression was performed to the association of STC and risk of GDM. Stratified analysis was carried out according to maternal age and pre-pregnancy BMI.We documented 383 incident GDM (12.7%). The STC ranged from 0.011 to 0.232 μg/L with a median of 0.062 μg/L. Women with advanced age and higher pre-pregnancy BMI tended to have higher level of STC. Individuals in GDM-group have higher level of STC than that in non-GDM group (P = 0.007). Maternal STC in early pregnancy was associated with risk of GDM, but the association attenuated to non-significance after adjusted for pre-pregnancy BMI. In the advanced age (30 years) group, STC was significantly associated with risk of GDM in a dose-response manner (P for trend0.05). Compared with the Quintile 1, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval, CI) of Quintile 2, Quintile 3, Quintile 4, and Quintile 5 were 1.48 (0.62-3.53), 2.70 (1.21-6.03), 2.85 (1.29-6.31), 2.30 (1.05-5.05) in the most adjusted model (including pre-pregnancy BMI).Our study was the first study to demonstrate an association of maternal STC in early pregnancy and risk of GDM, and the association was partly mediated by pre-pregnancy BMI. This association exhibited as an age-dependent manner. Our study highlights even very low-level of thallium exposure could already pose a threat to human's health.

Purpose: Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) RMRP has been confirmed to be associated with multiple tumor progression. However, the molecular regulatory mechanism of RMRP in human glioma was rarely elucidated.Methods: The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to measure the expression levels of RMRP, microRNA-466 (miR-466) and CXCR4 in glioma tissues and cells. The ELISA-BrdU assay and flow cytometry analysis was used to perform the cell proliferation, apoptotic rate, cell cycle assay in human glioma cell lines A172 and U251 cells. The starBase v2.0 or TargetScan was used to predict the potential interactions among RMRP, miR-466 and CXCR4, and the luciferase reporter assay was performed to validate the relationship among these molecules. The western blot was used to determine the expression levels of protein associated with cell cycle and CXCR4.Results: The levels of RMRP, CXCR4 were highly expressed, but miR-466 was decreased in glioma tissues and cells. And miR-466 was verified as a direct target of RMRP and directly regulated CXCR4. RMRP expression or miR-466 inhibitor promote cell proliferation and G1/S cell cycle transition but reduced apoptotic rate in A172 and U251 cells, while RMRP promote G1/S cell cycle transition through regulating CDK4 pathway, not CDK2 pathway. And that, the introduction of CXCR4 partly counteracted these impacts. In addition, RMRP silencing and miR-466 mimic impeded xenograft tumor growth in vivo.Conclusion: RMRP enhanced glioma progression, partially through miR-466/CXCR4 pathway. The molecular regulation mechanism based on RMRP/miR-466/CXCR4 might contribute to the diagnosis of glioma and provide the effective therapeutic targets for its treatment.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare but fatal clinical syndrome frequently complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute tubular necrosis. Renal thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a specific pathological feature of childhood HLH and few cases have been reported among infants. The present study presents a rare case of HLH with TMA in an infant. A 15-month-old infant with a week-long history of fever was admitted to hospital. The infant presented with AKI and subsequently a reduction in platelet and hemoglobin levels. TMA was diagnosed by kidney biopsy and the clinical, laboratory and bone marrow biopsy findings met the criteria of HLH. Due to a progressive increase in serum creatinine levels, hemodialysis was initiated on the second day following admission. Dexamethasone was administered to treat both the fever and HLH. The patient's body temperature returned to a normal range and platelet and hemoglobin levels were stable after 14 days of admission. Renal function stabilized on day 21. The results of genetic testing did not identify any disease-related variations. Childhood HLH is a severe condition and mortality can be reduced by early diagnosis and correct treatment. For patients with HLH and AKI, the possible role of TMA should be considered. Renal biopsy can help to identify the cause of AKI and can be performed when the patient's condition is stable.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease associated with aging. Bupleurum smithii Wolff. is a Chinese folk medicine used to reduce fever and inflammation. Regarding the key role of neuroinflammation in AD pathogenesis, it was speculated that B. smithii may be the source of compounds that treat AD through anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of saikogenin F, a natural active ingredient from B. smithii, on cognition impairment and neuroinflammation in AD mice induced by amyloid β (Aβ). The AD mice model was established by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of Aβ, and different doses of saikogenin F (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg) were intragastrically administrated once daily. Results of behavioral experiments, including the novel object recognition (NOR) test, Y-maze test, and Morris water maze (MWZ) test, showed that saikogenin F could ameliorate Aβ-induced cognition impairment in AD mice. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results showed that tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in hippocampal tissue increased after Aβ injection, while saikogenin F could significantly reduce the concentrations of these inflammatory factors. Western blotting results revealed that the Aβ-induced reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase subunits protein expression in mice hippocampus was remarkably downregulated by saikogenin F. Results of Iba-1 immunohistochemical staining showed that saikogenin F could effectively inhibit Aβ-induced activation of microglia in vivo. These results suggested that saikogenin F could relieve Aβ-induced cognitive impairment via inhibiting neuroinflammation and microglial activation. These effects may be achieved by inhibiting the expression of the NADPH oxidase subunits gp91phox and p47phox.

Life threatening cardiac arrhythmias result from abnormal propagation of nonlinear electrical excitation waves in the heart. Finding the locations of the sources of these waves remains a challenging problem. This is mainly due to the low spatial resolution of electrode recordings of these waves. Also, these recordings are subjected to noise. In this paper, we develop a different approach: the AFV-DT method based on an averaged flow velocity (AFV) technique adopted from the analysis of optical flows and the determinant-trace (DT) method used for vector field analysis of dynamical systems. This method can find the location and determine all important types of sources found in excitable media such as focal activity, spiral waves, and waves rotating around obstacles. We test this method on in silico data of various wave excitation patterns obtained using the Luo-Rudy model for cardiac tissue. We show that the method works well for data with low spatial resolutions (up to 8×8) and is stable against noise. Finally, we apply it to two clinical cases and show that it can correctly identify the arrhythmia type and location. We discuss further steps on the development and improvement of this approach. © 2021 American Physical Society. To explore the changes in bone height of the maxillary sinus floor at different sinus ridge heights after transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) with the simultaneous implantation of short implants.A total of 74 Bicon short implants were implanted into 37 patients during the same period of maxillary sinus elevation. The residual bone height (RBH)4 mm group has 43 sites, and the RBH≥4 mm group has 31 sites. After 5 years of follow-up observation, the implant survival rate and the change in bone height achieved in the maxillary sinus over time were measured and analyzed via clinical examination and X-ray imaging.In the 74 implantation sites, the elevation height of the sinus floor was (6.64±1.32) mm and the bone height of the sinus floor was (3.35±1.29) mm 5 years after loading. No statistical difference was observed in the bone resorption of the implant neck between the RBH4 mm and RBH≥4 mm groups. Meanwhile, a statistical difference was noted in the bone height obtained in the maxillary sinus between the two groups.When RBH in the maxillary posterior tooth area was4 mm, the simultaneous implantation of Bicon short implants with tSFE can achieve a high implant survival rate and bone gain in the maxillary sinus, but does not increase the absorption of the alveolar ridge bone.目的 研究上颌后牙区不同窦嵴距时，采用经牙槽嵴顶上颌窦底提升植骨并同期植入短种植体术后，种植体周围骨高度随时间的变化情况。方法 对37例患者进行经牙槽嵴顶上颌窦底提升植骨并同期植入共74枚Bicon短种植体，其中剩余牙槽骨高度（RBH）4 mm组43个位点，RBH≥4 mm组31个位点。随访5年后，通过临床检查和X线片测量分析不同窦嵴距时，种植体周围骨高度随时间的变化情况。结果 74个种植位点术后窦底提升高度（6.64±1.32）mm，修复负载5年后上颌窦内获得骨高度为（3.35±1.29）mm；RBH4 mm组和RBH≥4 mm组之间的种植体颈部骨吸收量的差异无统计学意义，而上颌窦内获得骨高度及种植体顶部骨高度的差异有统计学意义。结论 上颌后牙区RBH4 mm时，采用经牙槽嵴顶上颌窦底提升同期植入Bicon短种植体的术式可获得较高的种植体存留率及上颌窦内骨增加量，同时并不会增加牙槽嵴顶骨吸收量。.

Steroid-dependent (SD)/frequently relapsing (FR) nephrotic syndrome (NS) follows a relapsing and remitting course. It is also characterized by proteinuria and edema, which can significantly affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of a single dose of rituximab (RTX) as well as the impact of RTX on HRQOL in children with SDFRNS.Sixteen children with SDFRNS were enrolled in the study. Each patient was administered a single intravenous dose of RTX (375 mg/m2). Effectiveness was defined as remission of proteinuria. The side effects of RTX were monitored. HRQOL was assessed using PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales.All the patients completed the study. Three SDNS patients and three FRNS patients discontinued treatment over 1 to 3.25 years of follow-up. Additionally, three SDNS patients and three FRNS patients experienced 1 to 2 relapses. The mean relapse-free period was 79.0 ± 77.6 days. The mean dosages of prednisolone and other immunosuppressants required were significantly lower (P.05,.001) six months after treatment with RTX compared with six months before treatment. Relapse rate was significantly reduced (P.001) after treatment with RTX. Skin rash, hypotension, and fever were observed in one child. Total health score and physical, emotional, and school functioning were significantly higher six months after treatment with RTX (P.001).A single dose of RTX is effective and safe for children with SDFRNS and can improve HRQOL, especially physical, emotional, and school functioning.

Background The potential maternal and neonatal thyrotoxicity associated with exposure to arsenic during pregnancy is very limited and unclear. Objectives This study aimed to examine the associations between arsenic exposure levels in maternal and cord serum and maternal and neonatal thyroid hormone parameters in a prospective birth cohort study. Methods The study including 2089 mother-neonate pairs was based upon Ma’an Shan birth cohort study in China. The exposure variables including maternal serum arsenic levels in the first, second and third trimester and average arsenic exposure level during pregnancy and cord serum arsenic level. Maternal serum TSH and FT4 levels in the first, second and third trimester and cord serum TSH and FT4 levels were determined using the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay with Cobas Elecsys 411. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between arsenic exposure variables during pregnancy and maternal thyroid hormone parameters, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine associations between arsenic exposure during pregnancy and neonatal thyroid hormone parameters. Bayesian kernal machine regression (BKMR) analyses based on a kernel function were also used to examine the effects of exposure to metal mixtures (arsenic, mercury, cadmium and selenium). Results The geometric means of arsenic exposure levels across 3 trimesters were 1.74 μg/L, 1.81 μg/L and 1.99 μg/L, respectively, and 1.90 μg/L in cord serum; the geometric means of maternal FT4 levels across 3 trimesters were 16.91 pmol/L, 11.91 pmol/L and 13.16 pmol/L, respectively, and 16.10 pmol/L in cord serum; the geometric means of maternal TSH levels across 3 trimesters were 1.27 μIU/mL, 2.32 μIU/mL and 2.08 μIU/mL, respectively, and 8.47 μIU/mL in cord serum. Maternal serum arsenic levels in the first, seond, third trimester and average arsenic exposure level during pregnancy were all not associated with maternal thyroid hormone parameters after adjustment for all the covariates, the adjusted β (95% CI) were −0.002 (−0.10 to 0.09), 0.05 (−0.05 to 0.16), −0.09 (−0.17 to 0.003) and −0.05 (−0.22 to 0.11) for maternal FT4, respectively; and −0.005 (−0.04 to 0.03), −0.003 (−0.04 to 0.03), −0.004 (−0.03 to 0.02) and −0.01 (−0.06 to 0.04) for maternal lnTSH, respectively. Maternal serum arsenic levels in the first, second trimester and average arsenic exposure level during pregnancy were all inversely associated with neonatal FT4 level after adjustment for all the confounders, the adjusted β (95% CI) were −0.19 (−0.31 to −0.07), −0.14 (−0.26 to −0.01), −0.22 (−0.42 to −0.02), respectively; and cord serum arsenic level was positively related with neonatal TSH level, the adjusted β (95% CI) were 0.04 (0.001 to 0.08). The adverse joint toxic effect of the four metals in maternal serum in the first trimester and in cord serum on neonatal thyroid hormone parameters were also found. Conclusions In this study, exposure to low levels of arsenic during pregnancy could directly affect neonatal thyroid hormone parameters without being mediated by maternal effect of exposure, and maternal serum arsenic levels in the first, second trimester and average arsenic exposure level during pregnancy and cord serum arsenic level may be risk factors affecting neonatal thyroid hormones. These findings indicate that neonates are more sensitive to the thyrotoxicity of arsenic exposure even at low levels. In addition, the adverse joint toxic effect of metal mixtures is also worthy of attention.

The relationship between prenatal arsenic exposure at low levels and poor development in children, especially in regard to neurodevelopment, has aroused several concerns, but the conclusions have been inconsistent. It still remains unclear whether such adverse effect is associated with a specific profile of the developing brain in early life. To investigate the association between arsenic exposure in utero and children’s development and behaviour, we performed a large prospective birth cohort study including 2315 mother-infant pairs in Anhui Province, China. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire of China (ASQ-C) was used to assess the status of children’s development and behaviour at 6 months postpartum, and the levels of arsenic were determined in umbilical cord serum samples. Odds ratios for suspected developmental delay (SDD) in each domain of the ASQ-C clusters were estimated using logistic regression models. Compared with low arsenic levels group, medium and high arsenic levels were significantly associated with the increased risks of SDD in the personal-social domain among infants aged 6 months after adjustment for all potential confounders (OR = 1.33, 95% CI (1.01, 1.75) and OR = 1.47, 95% CI (1.08, 2.00), respectively). Sex stratification analysis demonstrated that this association was stronger in females. The sensitivity analyses also showed that high cord serum arsenic levels were associated with a 1.80-fold (95% CIs (1.12, 2.90)) higher risk of a more severe developmental delay in the personal-social domain among six-month-old females. Our results suggest that low-level arsenic exposure in utero could have an adverse domain-specific effect on children’s development at 6 months of age, particularly among females. Further studies are warranted to support the findings and explore the mechanism of these domain-and sex-specific associations. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common obstetric complication with adverse effects on both mothers and their children. Previous studies revealed the link between Arsenic (As) exposure and incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM), but the data on the association between maternal As exposure and GDM is scarce. We examined this association among a population-based birth cohort. As concentrations were determined at multiple time points during pregnancy by ICP-MS. The association between As levels and GDM prevalence was examined using logistic regression model after adjustment for confounders. A total of 419 (12.85%) women were diagnosed with GDM. The incidences of GDM gradually increased with increasing quartiles of As levels with significant trend. As levels were associated with the GDM (95%CI: 1.29-2.43) at only the 4th quartile in the first trimester. After adjustment for maternal age, prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), monthly income, gestational age and parity, the association remains significant (95%CI: 1.22-2.38). Stratified analyses showed the associations were largely limited to normal maternal age (95%CI: 1.19-3.04) and normal weight women (95%CI: 1.18-2.66). Our study showed an association between As and GDM in a birth cohort and explored first trimester may be the critical period for As associated GDM. This association was universal in the general pregnant population of normal age and of normal weight.

Cobalt (Co) is an essential trace element and has been suggested to be involved in blood pressure regulation, but few studies have focused on serum Co status during pregnancy and the risks of pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome (PIH). The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the association between serum Co levels during pregnancy and the risks of PIH, and to explore how the maternal Co status contributes to the incidence of PIH. 3260 non-hypertensive women before pregnancy with singleton births in Ma'anShan birth cohort study (MABC) were recruited with the assessment of maternal Co concentrations, additionally, the levels of 7 inflammatory factors and 3 stress factors in placentas were also determined. Relative risks (RRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] for the risks of PIH were assessed and the relationships between 10 factors and maternal Co status during pregnancy were evaluated as well. A total of 194 (5.95%) women were diagnosed with PIH. The concentrations of Co varied from the first trimester to the second trimester, and maternal serum Co concentrations during pregnancy were negatively associated with the incidence of PIH in a linear fashion. There was a clear trend in RRs according to decreasing exposure to Co levels in the second trimester (RRa=1.80, 95% CI (1.26, 2.56); RRb=1.73, 95% CI (1.21, 2.46) and RRc=1.43, 95% CI (1.02, 2.04) when low Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders; and RRa=1.29, 95% CI (0.88, 1.88); RRb=1.28, 95% CI (0.87, 1.87) and RRc=1.25, 95% CI (0.86, 1.82) when medium Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders). In addition, the trend for the first trimester was nearly identifical to those for the second trimester (RRa=1.35, 95% CI (0.94, 1.93); RRb=1.33, 95% CI (0.93, 1.91); RRc=1.22, 95%CI (0.86, 1.73) when low Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders; and RRa=1.10, 95% CI (0.76, 1.60); RRb=1.13, 95% CI (0.77, 1.64) and RRc=1.12, 95% CI (0.77, 1.63) before and after adjustment for confounders). Interestingly, Co concentrations in the second trimester were also inversely associated with the levels of some inflammatory factors and all three stress factors in placentas. This prospective study suggested that lower maternal serum Co concentration in the second trimester may associate with the incidence of PIH in Chinese population. Additionally, the maternal Co concentrations in the second trimester could reduce inflammatory and oxidative damage to the placenta. Further evidence is needed to support the findings and assess the mechanisms underlying the association.

C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) acts mainly in a local, paracrine fashion to regulate vascular tone and cell proliferation. Although several in vivo studies have demonstrated that CNP exerts an inhibitory effect on mesangial matrix generation, a limited number of reports exist about the anti-extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation effect of CNP and its underlying mechanisms in mesangial cells (MCs) in vitro. In this study, human MCs were incubated in serum-containing medium in the absence or presence of CNP (0, 10 and 100 pM) for 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. CNP administration significantly suppresses MCs proliferation and collagen (Col)-IV expression in a time- and dose-dependent manner. In addition, the study presented herein was designed as a first demonstration of the regulative effects of CNP on the metabolisms of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in MCs in vitro, and found that: (1) CNP administration significantly decreased the secretion and expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the cultured MCs; (2) the secretion and expression of TIMP-1 progressively elevated after treatment with CNP for 24 and 48 h, whereas declined at later time point; (3) CNP expression was negatively correlated with MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression; (4) the balance of MMPs/TIMPs was shifted toward the reduction in MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity and/or the increment in TIMP-1 expression, which could not account for the down-regulation of Col-IV expression in CNP-treated MCs. In conclusion, CNP suppresses mesangial proliferation and ECM expression via a MMPs/TIMPs-independent pathway in vitro.
