An approach to supervised learning in spiking neural networks is presented using a gradient-free method combined with spike-timing-dependent plasticity for image recognition. The proposed network architecture is scalable to multiple layers, enabling the development of more complex and deeper SNN models. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by its application to the MNIST dataset, showing good learning accuracy. The proposed method provides a robust and efficient alternative to the backpropagation-based method in supervised learning.

Despite their proficiency in math tasks, the mechanisms underlying LLMs' mathematical reasoning abilities remain a subject of debate. Recent studies suggest that chain-of-thought (CoT) prompts can bolster mathematical reasoning by encouraging LLMs to employ human-like logical reasoning (System 2), enabling them to excel on the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). To assess whether LLMs genuinely possess System 2-like logical reasoning, we introduced targeted modifications to CRT problems. Our findings reveal that, despite the use of CoT prompts, mainstream LLMs, including the latest o1-preview model, continue to exhibit a significant error rate. Further analysis indicates that they predominantly rely on System 1-like intuitive reasoning and pattern matching derived from training data, rather than demonstrating mastery of mathematical thinking. This discovery challenges the prevailing notion that LLMs possess genuine logical reasoning abilities and that CoT can enhance them. Consequently, this work may temper overly optimistic projections regarding LLMs' advancement toward artificial general intelligence.

We present our optical observations and multi-wavelength analysis of the GRB\,200613A detected by \texttt{Fermi} satellite. Time-resolved spectral analysis of the prompt $\gamma$-ray emission was conducted utilizing the Bayesian block method to determine statistically optimal time bins. Based on the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), the data generally favor the Band+Blackbody (short as BB) model. We speculate that the main Band component comes from the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, while the additional BB component comes from the neutrino annihilation process. The BB component becomes significant for a low-spin, high-accretion rate black hole central engine, as evidenced by our model comparison with the data. The afterglow light curve exhibits typical power-law decay, and its behavior can be explained by the collision between the ejecta and constant interstellar medium (ISM). Model fitting yields the following parameters: $E_{K,iso} = (2.04^{+11.8}_{-1.50})\times 10^{53}$ erg, $\Gamma_0=354^{+578}_{-217}$, $p=2.09^{+0.02}_{-0.03}$, $n_{18}=(2.04^{+9.71}_{-1.87})\times 10^{2}$ cm$^{-3}$, $\theta_j=24.0^{+6.50}_{-5.54}$ degree, $\epsilon_e=1.66^{+4.09}_{-1.39})\times 10^{-1}$ and $\epsilon_B=(7.76^{+48.5}_{-5.9})\times 10^{-6}$. In addition, we employed the public Python package \texttt{Prospector} perform a spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of the host galaxy. The results suggest that the host galaxy is a massive galaxy ($\log(M_\ast / M_\odot)=11.75^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$) with moderate star formation rate ($\mbox{SFR}=22.58^{+13.63}_{-7.22} M_{\odot}$/yr). The Einstein Probe (EP) achieved its first detection and localization of a bright X-ray flare, EP240219a, on February 19, 2024, during its commissioning phase. Subsequent targeted searches triggered by the EP240219a alert identified a faint, untriggered gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the archived data of Fermi/GBM, Swift/BAT, Insight-HXMT/HE and INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS. The EP/WXT light curve reveals a long duration of approximately 160 seconds with a slow decay, whereas the Fermi/GBM light curve shows a total duration of approximately 70 seconds. The peak in the Fermi/GBM light curve occurs slightly later with respect to the peak seen in the EP/WXT light curve. Our spectral analysis shows that a single cutoff power-law model effectively describes the joint EP/WXT-Fermi/GBM spectra in general, indicating coherent broad emission typical of GRBs. The model yielded a photon index of $\sim -1.70 \pm 0.05$ and a peak energy of $\sim 257 \pm 134$ keV. After detection of GRB 240219A, long-term observations identified several candidates in optical and radio wavelengths, none of which was confirmed as the afterglow counterpart during subsequent optical and near-infrared follow-ups. The analysis of GRB 240219A classifies it as an X-ray rich GRB with a high peak energy, presenting both challenges and opportunities for studying the physical origins of X-ray flashes (XRFs), X-ray rich GRBs (XRRs), and classical GRBs (C-GRBs). Motivated by the pressing challenges in the digital twin development for biomanufacturing systems, we introduce an adjoint sensitivity analysis (SA) approach to expedite the learning of mechanistic model parameters. In this paper, we consider enzymatic stochastic reaction networks representing a multi-scale bioprocess mechanistic model that allows us to integrate disparate data from diverse production processes and leverage the information from existing macro-kinetic and genome-scale models. To support forward prediction and backward reasoning, we develop a convergent adjoint SA algorithm studying how the perturbations of model parameters and inputs (e.g., initial state) propagate through enzymatic reaction networks and impact on output trajectory predictions. This SA can provide a sample efficient and interpretable way to assess the sensitivities between inputs and outputs accounting for their causal dependencies. Biomanufacturing innovation relies on an efficient Design of Experiments (DoEs) to optimize processes and product quality. Traditional DoE methods, ignoring the underlying bioprocessing mechanisms, often suffer from a lack of interpretability and sample efficiency. This limitation motivates us to create a new optimal learning approach for digital twin model calibration. In this study, we consider the cell culture process multi-scale mechanistic model, also known as Biological System-of-Systems (Bio-SoS). This model with a modular design, composed of sub-models, allows us to integrate data across various production processes. To calibrate the Bio-SoS digital twin, we evaluate the mean squared error of model prediction and develop a computational approach to quantify the impact of parameter estimation error of individual sub-models on the prediction accuracy of digital twin, which can guide sample-efficient and interpretable DoEs., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

To support mechanism online learning and facilitate digital twin development for biomanufacturing processes, this paper develops an efficient Bayesian inference approach for partially observed enzymatic stochastic reaction network (SRN), a fundamental building block of multi-scale bioprocess mechanistic model. To tackle the critical challenges brought by the nonlinear stochastic differential equations (SDEs)-based mechanistic model with partially observed state and having measurement errors, an interpretable Bayesian updating linear noise approximation (LNA) metamodel, incorporating the structure information of the mechanistic model, is proposed to approximate the likelihood of observations. Then, an efficient posterior sampling approach is developed by utilizing the gradients of the derived likelihood to speed up the convergence of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). In this paper, we develop a general framework for multicontinuum homogenization in perforated domains. The simulations of problems in perforated domains are expensive and, in many applications, coarse-grid macroscopic models are developed. Many previous approaches include homogenization, multiscale finite element methods, and so on. In our paper, we design multicontinuum homogenization based on our recently proposed framework. In this setting, we distinguish different spatial regions in perforations based on their sizes. For example, very thin perforations are considered as one continua, while larger perforations are considered as another continua. By differentiating perforations in this way, we are able to predict flows in each of them more accurately. We present a framework by formulating cell problems for each continuum using appropriate constraints for the solution averages and their gradients. These cell problem solutions are used in a multiscale expansion and in deriving novel macroscopic systems for multicontinuum homogenization. Our proposed approaches are designed for problems without scale separation. We present numerical results for two continuum problems and demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we propose a novel multiscale model reduction strategy tailored to address the Poisson equation within heterogeneous perforated domains. The numerical simulation of this intricate problem is impeded by its multiscale characteristics, necessitating an exceptionally fine mesh to adequately capture all relevant details. To overcome the challenges inherent in the multiscale nature of the perforations, we introduce a coarse space constructed using the Constraint Energy Minimizing Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (CEM-GMsFEM). This involves constructing basis functions through a sequence of local energy minimization problems over eigenspaces containing localized information pertaining to the heterogeneities. Through our analysis, we demonstrate that the oversampling layers depend on the local eigenvalues, thereby implicating the local geometry as well. Additionally, we provide numerical examples to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

By measuring magnetizations of pristine and Ta-doped CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ single crystals, we have carried out systematic studies on the lower critical field, critical current density, and equilibrium magnetization of this kagome system. The lower critical field has been investigated in the two typical samples, and the temperature dependent lower critical field obtained in Ta-doped sample can be fitted by using the model with two $s$-wave superconducting gaps yielding the larger gap of $2\Delta_{s1}/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{c}=7.9\;(\pm1.8)$. This indicates a strong-coupling feature of the V-based superconductors. The measured magnetization hysteresis loops allow us to calculate the critical current density, which shows a very weak bulk vortex pinning. The magnetization hysteresis loops measured in these two kinds of samples can be well described by a recently proposed generalized phenomenological model, which leads to the determination of many fundamental parameters for these superconductors. Our systematic results and detailed analysis conclude that this V-based kagome system has features of strong-coupling superconductivity, relatively large Ginzburg-Landau parameter and weak vortex coupling., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Large Language Models (LLMs) have gradually become the gateway for people to acquire new knowledge. However, attackers can break the model's security protection ("jail") to access restricted information, which is called "jailbreaking." Previous studies have shown the weakness of current LLMs when confronted with such jailbreaking attacks. Nevertheless, comprehension of the intrinsic decision-making mechanism within the LLMs upon receipt of jailbreak prompts is noticeably lacking. Our research provides a psychological explanation of the jailbreak prompts. Drawing on cognitive consistency theory, we argue that the key to jailbreak is guiding the LLM to achieve cognitive coordination in an erroneous direction. Further, we propose an automatic black-box jailbreaking method based on the Foot-in-the-Door (FITD) technique. This method progressively induces the model to answer harmful questions via multi-step incremental prompts. We instantiated a prototype system to evaluate the jailbreaking effectiveness on 8 advanced LLMs, yielding an average success rate of 83.9%. This study builds a psychological perspective on the explanatory insights into the intrinsic decision-making logic of LLMs.

The prompt emission mechanism of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is still unclear, and the time-resolved spectral analysis of GRBs is a powerful tool for studying their underlying physical processes. We performed a detailed time-resolved spectral analysis of 78 bright long GRB samples detected by Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). A total of 1490 spectra were obtained and their properties were studied using a typical Band-shape model. Firstly, the parameter distribution of the time-resolved spectrum given as follows: the low-energy spectral index $\alpha \sim -0.72$, high-energy spectral index $\beta \sim -2.42$, the peak energy $E_{\rm p} \sim 221.69 \,\rm{keV}$, and the energy flux $F \sim 7.49\times 10^{-6} \rm{\, erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. More than 80\% of the bursts exhibit the hardest low-energy spectral index $\alpha_{\rm max}$ exceeding the synchrotron limit (-2/3). Secondly, the evolution patterns of $\alpha$ and $E_{\rm p}$ were statistically analyzed. The results show that for multi-pulse GRBs the intensity-tracking pattern is more common than the hard-to-soft pattern in the evolution of both $E_{\rm p}$ and $\alpha$. The hard-to-soft pattern is generally shown in single-pulse GRBs or in the initial pulse of multi-pulse GRBs. Finally, we found a significant positive correlation between $F$ and $E_{\rm p}$, with half of the samples exhibiting a positive correlation between $F$ and $\alpha$. We discussed the spectral evolution of different radiation models. The diversity of spectral evolution patterns indicates that there may be more than one radiation mechanism occurring in the gamma-ray burst radiation process, including photospheric radiation and synchrotron radiation. By measuring the dynamical and conventional magnetization relaxation of the Ba$_{0.64}$K$_{0.36}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, we found strong second peak effect on the magnetization hysteresis loops. It is found that there is a kink of magnetization at a field between the valley and maximum magnetization. Interestingly, the magnetization relaxation rate has a deep minimum at the field with the kink, indicating a diminished vortex creep. The relaxation rate at this field is clearly smaller than the so-called universal lower limit of the relaxation rate characterized by ($S_0\approx \ Gi^{1/2}(T/T_\mathrm{c}$). This diminished vortex creep is associated with the origin of the SMP effect and attributed to the strongly hindered flux motion when experiencing the transition from the quasi-ordered to disordered vortex phases., Comment: 5 figures

Dilepton production provides a unique probe of the strong electromagnetic field produced in heavy-ion collisions. To map out the behavior of its transverse momentum broadening, we present a theoretical model based on the equivalent photon approximation, and then we update it to make direct comparisons with the recent experimental measurements. We find that the model calculations can describe well, not only the average transverse momentum squared of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs in Au--Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV, but also the acoplanarity of $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ pairs in Pb--Pb collisions at$\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. At leading order in QCD coupling constant, we compute the energy loss per traveling distance of a heavy quark $dE/dz$ from elastic scattering off thermal quarks and gluons at a temperature $T$, including the thermal perturbative description of soft scatterings ($-t<-t^{\ast}$) and a perturbative QCD-based calculation for hard collisions ($-t>-t^{\ast}$). Within this soft-hard factorization model, we find that the full results of $dE/dz$ behaves a mild sensitivity to the intermediate cutoff $t^{\ast}$, supporting the validity of the soft-hard approach within the temperature region of interest. We re-derive the analytic formula for $dE/dz$ in the high-energy approximation, $E_{1}\gg m^{2}_{1}/T$, where $E_{1}$ is the injected heavy quark energy and $m_{1}$ is its mass. It is realized that the soft logarithmic contribution, $dE/dz\propto ln(-t^{\ast}/m^{2}_{D})$, arises from the $t$-channel scattering off thermal partons, while the hard logarithmic term, $dE/dz\propto ln[E_{1}T/(-t^{\ast})]$, stems from the $t$-channel scattering off thermal partons, and the one $dE/dz\propto ln(E_{1}T/m^{2}_{1})$ comes from the $s$- and $u$-channel scattering off gluons. The sum of these contributions cancels the $t^{\ast}$-dependence as observed in the full result. The mass hierarchy is observed $dE/dz(charm)>dE/dz(bottom)$. Our full results are crucial for a better description of heavy quark transport in QCD medium, in particular at low and moderate energy. We also calculate the energy loss by imposing the Einstein's relationship. Video moment retrieval (MR) and highlight detection (HD) based on natural language queries are two highly related tasks, which aim to obtain relevant moments within videos and highlight scores of each video clip. Recently, several methods have been devoted to building DETR-based networks to solve both MR and HD jointly. These methods simply add two separate task heads after multi-modal feature extraction and feature interaction, achieving good performance. Nevertheless, these approaches underutilize the reciprocal relationship between two tasks. In this paper, we propose a task-reciprocal transformer based on DETR (TR-DETR) that focuses on exploring the inherent reciprocity between MR and HD. Specifically, a local-global multi-modal alignment module is first built to align features from diverse modalities into a shared latent space. Subsequently, a visual feature refinement is designed to eliminate query-irrelevant information from visual features for modal interaction. Finally, a task cooperation module is constructed to refine the retrieval pipeline and the highlight score prediction process by utilizing the reciprocity between MR and HD. Comprehensive experiments on QVHighlights, Charades-STA and TVSum datasets demonstrate that TR-DETR outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. As the leading candidate of quantum error correction codes, surface code suffers from significant overhead, such as execution time. Reducing the circuit's execution time not only enhances its execution efficiency but also improves fidelity. However, finding the shortest execution time is NP-hard. In this work, we study the surface code mapping and scheduling problem. To reduce the execution time of a quantum circuit, we first introduce two novel metrics: Circuit Parallelism Degree and Chip Communication Capacity to quantitatively characterize quantum circuits and chips. Then, we propose a resource-adaptive mapping and scheduling method, named Ecmas, with customized initialization of chip resources for each circuit. Ecmas can dramatically reduce the execution time in both double defect and lattice surgery models. Furthermore, we provide an additional version Ecmas-ReSu for sufficient qubits, which is performance-guaranteed and more efficient. Extensive numerical tests on practical datasets show that Ecmas outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by reducing the execution time by 51.5% on average for double defect model. We consider the quantum memory assisted quantum state verification task, where an adversary prepare independent multipartite entangled states and send to the local verifiers, who then store several copies in the quantum memory and measure them collectively to make decision. We establish an exact analytic formula for optimizing two-copy state verification, where the verifiers store two copies, and give a globally optimal two-copy strategy for multi-qubit graph states involving only Bell measurements. When the verifiers can store arbitrarily many copies, we present a dimension expansion technique that designs efficient verification strategies for this case, showcasing its application to efficiently verifying GHZ-like states. These strategies become increasingly advantageous with growing memory resources, ultimately approaching the theoretical limit of efficiency. We present a study of electrical and thermal transport in Weyl semimetal WTe$_2$ down to 0.3 K. The Wiedemann-Franz law holds below 2 K and a downward deviation starts above. The deviation is more pronounced in cleaner samples, as expected in the hydrodynamic picture of electronic transport, where a fraction of electron-electron collisions conserve momentum. Phonons are the dominant heat carriers and their mean-free-path do not display a Knudsen minimum. This is presumably a consequence of weak anharmonicity, as indicated by the temperature dependence of the specific heat. Frequent momentum exchange between phonons and electrons leads to quantum oscillations of the phononic thermal conductivity. Bloch-Gr\"uneisen picture of electron-phonon scattering breaks down at low temperature when Umklapp ph-ph collisions cease to be a sink for electronic flow of momentum. Comparison with semi-metallic Sb shows that normal ph-ph collisions are amplified by anharmonicity. In this study, we investigate the impact of rotation on the thermodynamic characteristics of QCD matter using the three-flavor NJL model. We examine the temperature, quark chemical potential, and angular velocity dependencies of key thermodynamic quantities, such as the trace anomaly, specific heat, speed of sound, angular momentum, and moment of inertia. A supermassive black hole can launch a relativistic jet when it violently disrupts a star that passes too close. Such jetted tidal disruption events (TDEs) are rare and unique tools to investigate quiescent supermassive black holes, jet physics, and circumnuclear environment at high redshift. The newly discovered TDE AT2022cmc ($z\sim 1.193$) providing rich multi-band (X-ray, UV, optical, sub-millimeter, and radio) data, has been interpreted as the fourth on-axis jetted TDE. In this work, we constrain the circumnuclear medium (CNM) density profile with both closure relation (CR) test and detailed forward shock model fit with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach to the multi-band (optical, sub-millimeter, and radio) data of AT2022cmc.We find that the CNM density profile of AT2022cmc is $n\propto R^{-k}$ with $k \sim 1.68$, implying a Bondi accretion in history. Furthermore, our model fit result suggests a two-component jet in AT2022cmc, indicating a similar jet physics to well-studied jetted TDE Sw J1644+57., Comment: accepted in ApJ
