1. Early-age heat exposure improved growth performance and heat tolerance in broilers

Abstract

ABSTRACT: A total of 440 one-day-old healthy male Arbor Acres broilers were equally assigned to a control group (CTL) and an early-age high-temperature exposure (EHT) group (4 replicates per group, 55 chickens per replicate). At d 3, the broilers in CTL group were reared in the normal temperature 33 ± 1°C, while the broilers in EHT group were exposed to 36 ± 1°C for 24 h. At d 43, all broilers were treated with an acute high temperature 35 ± 1°C for 5 h. The results showed that average daily gain in EHT group was decreased at d 3, but average daily gain in EHT group was increased at d 36 to 42 (P < 0.05). Plasma GLU level in EHT group was lower in broilers at d 7 or facing subsequently high temperature for 5 h (P < 0.05). The relative expression of myogenic differentiation (MyoD) gene in pectoralis major and myogenic factor 5 (Myf5) gene in biceps femoris were significantly improved at d 42 after early-age heat exposure (P < 0.05). Broilers in EHT group have a higher temperature tolerance with a lower mortality than control broilers (P < 0.05). Broilers in EHT group have a lower rectal temperature and a higher comb and ear temperature when facing subsequently acute high temperature than control broilers (P < 0.05). In addition, our study demonstrated that early-age heat exposure significantly decreased the mortality and increased the heat tolerance of broilers when facing an acute short-term heat exposures. Early-age heat exposure increased the process of myogenesis via up-regulating the MyoD and Myf5 gene expression in skeletal muscle, which accelerated average daily gain.

Abstract

A massless particle beyond the Standard Model is searched for in the two-body decay Σ+→p+invisible using (1.0087±0.0044)×1010 J/ψ events collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.097GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction B(Σ+→p+invisible) is determined to be 3.2×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for a flavor-changing neutral current process with missing energy in hyperon decays which plays an important role in constraining new physics models.

Abstract

The spin and parity of the charmed mesons Ds⁎+, D⁎0 and D⁎+ are determined for the first time to be JP=1− with significances greater than 10σ over other hypotheses of 2+ and 3−, using an e+e− collision data sample with an integrated luminosity of 3.19 fb−1 collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. Different spin-parity hypotheses are tested via a helicity amplitude analysis of the processes e+e−→Ds⁎+Ds−, D⁎0D0 and D⁎+D−, with Ds⁎+→Ds+γ, D⁎0→D0π0, and D⁎+→D+π0. The results confirm the quark model predictions.

Abstract

We search for the semi-leptonic decays Λc+→Λπ+π−e+νe and Λc+→pKS0π−e+νe in a sample of 4.5fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data collected in the center-of-mass energy region between 4.600GeV and 4.699GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits on the decay branching fractions are set to be B(Λc+→Λπ+π−e+νe)

Abstract

Sorting behaviour is a common phenomenon observed in ruminants when they are provided with a total mixed ration, which contributes to variations in the severity of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). Pelleted total mixed ration (PTMR) reduces sorting, but high-grain content increases acidosis risk. However, whether the variability in the severity of SARA exists in sheep fed the same high-grain PTMR is less understood. This study aimed to investigate SARA variability among individual sheep offered a high-grain PTMR, considering chewing activity, ruminal fermentation, bacterial communities and nutrient digestibility. Twenty ruminally cannulated male Hu sheep were individually housed in cages and fed a PTMR comprising 80% concentrate mix and 20% roughage. A 14-day adaptation period to the diet and facilities was provided before a 10-day sample collection period. Continuous monitoring of ruminal pH was conducted for 48 h, during which time chewing activity was also recorded. Ruminal fluid samples were collected for analysis of volatile fatty acid and microbial DNA extraction. Faecal samples were collected to measure nutrient digestibility. Based on their acidosis index, the sheep were classified into two groups: SARA-susceptible group (n = 6) and SARA-tolerant group (n = 6). Abstract

The stabilization of the m / n = 2/1 neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) has been carried out in EAST H-mode discharges, where m / n is the poloidal/toroidal mode number. The experimental results are reported for the first time in this paper. To facilitate the experimental study, the magnetic island (NTM) is generated by a sufficiently large amplitude of the externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). After switching off the RMP, the NTM exists due to the bootstrap current perturbation, with the magnetic island width being about 5 cm for the local equilibrium bootstrap current fraction being larger than 10%. By applying the localized ECCD later, the NTM is fully suppressed if the radial misalignment between the magnetic island and the ECCD location is sufficiently small. The stabilizing effect depends on both the radial misalignment and the applied electron cyclotron wave power. More importantly, it is found that the NTM can be avoided when applying ECCD earlier during the ramp-up phase of the RMP amplitude, if ECCD is localized around the O-point of the magnetic island, indicating an efficient way for avoiding locked modes that can lead to the major disruptions of tokamak plasmas.

Abstract

I-mode is a promising regime for future fusion reactors due to the high energy confinement and the moderate particle confinement. However, the effect of lithium, which has been widely applied for particle recycling and impurity control, on I-mode plasma is still unclear. Recently, experiments of real-time lithium powder injection on I-mode plasma have been carried out in EAST Tokamak. It was found that the confinement performance of the I-mode can be improved by the lithium powder injection, which can strongly reduce electron turbulence (ET) and then trigger ion turbulence (IT). And it was observed that the ET intensity is inversely proportional to the velocity shear, which suggests that the injection of lithium powder leads to a gradual enhancement of the shear flow, whereby the turbulence is reduced and consequently the confinement is improved. Four different regimes of I-mode have been identified in EAST. The Type I I-mode plasma is characterized by the weakly coherent mode (WCM) and the geodesic-acoustic mode (GAM). The Type II I-mode is featured as the WCM and the edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO). The Type III I-mode corresponds to the plasma with the co-existence of ETRO, GAM, and WCM. The Type IV I-mode denotes the plasma with only WCM but without ETRO and GAM. It was observed that the WCM intensity is increased with lithium powder injection by the confinement improvement/pedestal temperature increase. EAST experiments demonstrate that lithium powder injection is an effective tool for real-time control and confinement improvement of I-mode plasma.

Abstract

We search for an axion-like particle (ALP) a through the process ψ(3686)→π+π−J/ψ, J/ψ→γa, a→γγ in a data sample of (2.71±0.01)×109 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector. No significant ALP signal is observed over the expected background, and the upper limits on the branching fraction of the decay J/ψ→γa and the ALP-photon coupling constant gaγγ are set at 95% confidence level in the mass range of 0.165≤ma≤2.84GeV/c2. The limits on B(J/ψ→γa) range from 8.3×10−8 to 1.8×10−6 over the search region, and the constraints on the ALP-photon coupling are the most stringent to date for 0.165≤ma≤1.468GeV/c2.

Abstract

Significant progress has been made in magnesium-based composites during recent decades, especially for the appearance of magnesium matrix composite reinforced by nanoparticles. The nanoparticles added not only exhibit a good strengthening effect, but also maintain the initial toughness of the matrix, effectively balancing the contradiction between the strength and plasticity in the traditional magnesium matrix composites. The magnesium matrix nanocomposites with excellent mechanical properties have pushed the development of magnesium matrix composites to a new stage. However, it is very difficult to disperse the nanoparticles in metal melt especially in magnesium melt which is different from other metal melts and dangerous during the cast processing. This means that the preparation of magnesium matrix nanocomposite is extremely challenging. Further, the magnesium matrix nanocomposites possess a distinctive characteristic in deformation behavior, strengthening and toughening mechanism due to their special size effect of nanoparticles. Accordingly, this review will focus on the new preparation technologies, deformation behavior, mechanical properties and strengthening and toughening mechanisms. The potential applications, development trends and future research ideas of magnesium matrix nanocomposite are also prospected.

Abstract

Citrus trees of cv. Huangguogan, 8-, 30-, and 280-year-old (8s, 30s, and 280s, respectively), were used to explore the photosynthesis and related enzyme activity. In spring shoot leaves, net photosynthetic rate (PN) of the 280s was significantly lower than that of the 30s and 8s, but it was opposite in summer shoot leaves. PN of the summer shoots was higher than that of the spring shoots. PN was significantly positively correlated with stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and transpiration rate, but was negatively correlated with maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII photochemistry. The effect of age on variable fluorescence/minimal fluorescence was similar to that of minimal fluorescence, variable fluorescence, maximal fluorescence yield of the dark-adapted state. Fruits of the 280s had significantly lower sugar components than those of the 8s and 30s. Results showed that fruits of the 8s and 30s actively accumulated photosynthesis products, which was verified by the higher PN in the spring shoots, lower acidic invertase and neutral invertase activities, and higher sucrose phosphate synthase than that of the 280s.

Abstract

This paper presents the progress in the long—pulse operation of the electron cyclotron (EC) system and the achievements in high—electron temperature plasmas by the combined EC and lower hybrid (LH) waves heating since the EC system was built in 2015. An electron temperature of up to 12 keV with a duration over 100 s was realized by the simultaneous heating of EC and LH waves at the line-averaged density ${\bar n_{\text{e}}}$ ∼ 1.8 × 10 ^19 m ^−3 . The plasma heating effect strongly depends on the location of EC power deposition. H-mode plasmas with solely EC wave auxiliary heating have been obtained on EAST for the first time. These H-mode discharges show an enhanced confinement factor H _98(y,2) around 1.0, which is higher than the previous H-mode using LH power alone (Xu et al 2011 Nucl. Fusion 51 072001). The total heating power is very close to the threshold value for L–H transition according to the international tokamak scaling. In addition to the temperature effects inside the separatrix, higher electron temperature produced by EC wave is found to reduce the LH power loss in the scrape-off layer due to collisional absorption, which is beneficial to further increase the LH current drive efficiency. Ray-tracing/Fokker–Planck modeling results indicate that higher electron temperature can shorten the LH wave propagation on EAST in a multiple-pass regime, thus decreasing the collisional dissipation.

Abstract

Lipids are vital cellular constituents in plant, and lipid peroxidation metabolites are critical defence substances in plants. In this study, mass spectrometry along with projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to detect lipid metabolism changes in Arabidopsis thaliana in response to oligochitosan (an effective resistance elicitor for the control of plant diseases). The PLS-DA showed that lipid metabolites of Arabidopsis thaliana were influenced by oligochitosan treatment. The total content of oxylipin containing monogalactosyldiacylglycerols, oxylipin-containing digalactosyldiacylglycerols, and oxylipin-containing phosphatidylglycerols increased firstly (after 1 h), and then decreased with the increase of oligochitosan treatment duration. In contrast, the total content of monogalactosyldiacylglycerols, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, and phosphatidylglycerols decreased firstly, and then increased with the increase of oligochitosan treatment duration. The amounts of free fatty acids (C16:2, C16:3, C18:2, and C18:3) were lower after treatment with oligochitosan for 1, 3, and 6 h than in the control, while the production of volatile organic compounds such as 2-hexenal (except for 3 h) and nonanal was higher than in the control. In conclusion, lipid metabolites of Arabidopsis thaliana were influenced by oligochitosan treatment, and the synthesized lipids and oxylipin-containing lipids were remodelled and free fatty acids was metabolized to volatile organic compounds.

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) has been shown to be involved in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune responses in many mammal cells. Here, we suggest that the mTOR pathway is involved in the intestinal inflammatory responses evoked by LPS treatment in chicken embryos. The intestinal tissue from Specific pathogen free chick embryos was cultured in the presence of LPS for 2 h. Secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) concentrations, messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of cytokines, and protein levels of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), mTOR and p70 ribosomal S6 kinase (p70S6K) were determined. 15. Thickness effect on mechanical behavior of auxetic sintered metal fiber sheets

Sintered metal fiber sheets (MFSs) made by sequential-overlap method are transversely isotropic open-cell cellular materials with paper-like fiber network architectures, which exhibit auxeticity and are promising for various potential applications due to the reentrant micro-structure. The thickness effect on the out-of-plane auxeticity (negative Poisson's ratio) of MFSs samples of 2–20 mm thick subjected to in-plane tensile loading is investigated with digital image correlation technique. Furthermore, the deformation modes of fibers within MFSs during various loading stages are examined with X-ray tomography. It is found that in addition to the straightening of reentrant fibers, fiber layers with defects and joints failure induced slippage between adjacent layers leads to local shear and results in unique umbrella-like local deformation termed umbrella effect, which gradually dominates the auxeticity during tensile loading. Although remarkably increasing lateral deformation, the umbrella effect significantly diminishes the in-plane mechanical performance such as rigidity and strength. In particular, this effect is suppressed by sample thickness: the overall performance tends to stabilize with sample thickness greater than a certain value, provided that the MFS is uniform with all fibers randomly distributed. The finding facilitates wider application of auxetic MFSs with further understanding on the relationship between the thickness effect and performance. Abstract

In the present study, AZ31B magnesium matrix composites reinforced with two volume fractions (3 and 5 vol.%) of micron-SiC particles(1 μm) were fabricated by semisolid stirring assisted ultrasonic vibration method. The as-cast ingots were extruded at 350 °C with the extrusion ratio of 15:1 at a constant ram speed of 15 mm/s. The microstructure of the composites was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. Microstructure characterization of the composites showed relative uniform reinforcement distribution and significant grain refinement. The presence of 1 μm-SiC particles assisted in improving the elastic modulus and tensile strength. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the 5 vol.% SiCp/AZ31B composites were simultaneously improved.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine hepatitis B virus (HBV) subgenotypes and mutations in enhancer II, basal core promoter, and precore regions of HBV in relation to risks of liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Southeast China. A case-control study was performed, including chronic hepatitis B (CHB; n=125), LC (n=120), and HCC (n=136). HBV was genotyped by multiplex polymerase chain reaction and subgenotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism. HBV mutations were measured by DNA sequencing. HBV genotype C (68.2%) predominated and genotype B (30.2%) was the second most common. Of these, C2 (67.5%) was the most prevalent subgenotype, and B2 (30.2%) ranked second. Thirteen mutations with a frequency >5% were detected. Seven mutation patterns (C1653T, G1719T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, and G1799C) were associated with C2, and four patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were associated with B2. Six patterns (C1653T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, and G1799C) were obviously associated with LC, and 10 patterns (C1653T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, G1799C, C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were significantly associated with HCC compared with CHB. Four patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were significantly associated with HCC compared with LC. Multivariate regression analyses showed that HBV subgenotype C2 and C2-associated mutation patterns (C1653T, T1753C, A1762T, and G1764A) were independent risk factors for LC when CHB was the control, and that B2-associated mutation patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were independent risk factors for HCC when LC was the control.

In order to clear the timeliness of metal magnetic memory signal strength on the specimen surface after unloading, an artificial defect is prefabricated on the specimen surface of KMN, which is commonly used in the centrifugal compressor. Then conduct a static tension experiment on the specimen, and measure the normal magnetic field strength of artificial defect surface of the unloaded specimen periodically with EMS-2003, which is an intelligent magnetic memory tester. Furthermore, the time domain model of the magnetic memory signal is built and the attenuation law of magnetic field intensity with time is revealed. The results show that: the surface magnetic field signal value reduced with time after unloading. In other words, that is timeliness of the magnetic field signal.

Abstract

As an important part of the debt financing decision, the choice of debt maturity structure will not only affect investment and financing cost, corporate governance and liquidity risk, but also be directly related to the distribution of interests between the creditor and debtor. In fact, debt maturity structure can be regarded as an endogenous result of one social economic system in a particular development stage. Therefore, it owns important theoretical significance and application value to study the effect of institutional environments on debt maturity structure. Using theoretical analysis, this paper introduces institutional environments into the standard debt maturity model established by Holmstrom and Tirole (1998, 2000). And then, this paper constructs a theoretical model under this situation and examines the influence of institutional environment on debt maturity structure, through solving the mathematical model, theoretical derivation, comparative static analysis and numerical simulation. The theoretical research results show that, debt maturity structure is shortened with the improvement of institutional environment.

Abstract

Water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) is one of the key parts of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), the construction of which was completed by the end of 2020. The WCDA covers a 78 000-m2 area and there exist 3120 large size photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in three ponds: 8-in PMTs are used in WCDA pond No. 1 and 20-in PMTs are used in ponds No. 2 and No. 3. The front-end electronics (FEE) system based on multigain measurement technique is designed to achieve both high-precision time and charge measurements over a large dynamic range from single photon electron (S.P.E.) to 4000 P.E. (for water pond No. 1)/1800 P.E. (for water ponds No. 2 and No. 3). To achieve a high-quality clock distribution and phase alignment as well as mixed transmission of data, clock, and commands in one fiber over a long distance, an enhanced white rabbit (WR) technique is used. Testing of all the 350 FEE modules for the WCDA is presented in this article. Test results indicate that the charge resolution is better than 20% at S.P.E. and 1% at 1800/4000 P.E. and the time resolution is better than 300 ps root mean square (rms), which successfully meets the application requirement. All the FEE modules have been fabricated and installed for the LHAASO WCDA from 2018 to 2020, and the initial commissioning operation indicates that the FEEs function well.

Abstract

Citrus trees of cv. Huangguogan, 8-, 30-, and 280-year-old (8s, 30s, and 280s, respectively), were used to explore the photosynthesis and related enzyme activity. In spring shoot leaves, net photosynthetic rate (PN) of the 280s was significantly lower than that of the 30s and 8s, but it was opposite in summer shoot leaves. PN of the summer shoots was higher than that of the spring shoots. PN was significantly positively correlated with stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and transpiration rate, but was negatively correlated with maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII photochemistry. The effect of age on variable fluorescence/minimal fluorescence was similar to that of minimal fluorescence, variable fluorescence, maximal fluorescence yield of the dark-adapted state. Fruits of the 280s had significantly lower sugar components than those of the 8s and 30s. Results showed that fruits of the 8s and 30s actively accumulated photosynthesis products, which was verified by the higher PN in the spring shoots, lower acidic invertase and neutral invertase activities, and higher sucrose phosphate synthase than that of the 280s.

Abstract

Understanding the relationships among multiple ecosystem services could improve the landscape capacity to provide benefits to human society. However, the underlying mechanisms shaping ecosystem services relationships are still unclear although some studies have been conducted to explore how natural and socioeconomic factors influence the relationships among ecosystem services. In this study, the karst landscape in southwestern China, a vulnerable system with intensive human activities, was focused on, aiming to explore relationships between ecosystem services and associated social and ecological factors. The results showed that the distribution of eight individual ecosystem services were spatially heterogeneous and clustered based on the characteristics of the karst landscape. The relationships between provisioning services and regulating services, such as grain production and net primary productivity, as well as water yield and soil retention, were quite different between high karst coverage regions and low karst coverage regions. Among five ecosystem service bundles identified, ecosystem services in the urban development bundle were mainly determined by socioeconomic factors, while in the other four bundles of multifunction, grain production, habitat conservation, and carbon sequestration, ecosystem services were dominated by ecological factors. However, socioeconomic factors (i.e. population density and night-time light intensity) appeared to explain the overall ecosystem service delivery more than karst terrain. This study provided insights for sustainable ecosystem management in a vulnerable karst region through exploring social-ecological factors of the relationships among ecosystem services.

Abstract

Quasi-periodic pedestal burst instabilities (PBIs), featuring alternative turbulence suppression and bursts, have been clearly identified by various edge diagnostics during I-mode to H-mode transition in the EAST Tokamak. The radial distribution of the phase perturbation caused by PBI shows that PBI is localized in the pedestal. Prior to each PBI, a significant increase of density gradient close to the pedestal top can be clearly distinguished, then the turbulence burst is generated, accompanied by the relaxation of the density profile, and then induces an outward particle flux. The relative density perturbation caused by PBIs is about 6%–8%. Statistic analyses show that the pedestal normalized density gradient R/L n triggering the first PBI has a threshold value, mostly in the range of 22–24, suggesting that a PBI triggering instability could be driven by the density gradient. And R/L n triggering the last PBI is about 30–40 and seems to increase with the loss power and the chord-averaged density. In addition, the frequency of PBI is likely to be inversely proportional to the chord-averaged density and the loss power. These results suggest that PBIs and the density gradient prompt increase prior to PBIs can be considered as the precursor for controlling I–H transition.

Abstract

Lipids are vital cellular constituents in plant, and lipid peroxidation metabolites are critical defence substances in plants. In this study, mass spectrometry along with projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to detect lipid metabolism changes in Arabidopsis thaliana in response to oligochitosan (an effective resistance elicitor for the control of plant diseases). The PLS-DA showed that lipid metabolites of Arabidopsis thaliana were influenced by oligochitosan treatment. The total content of oxylipin containing monogalactosyldiacylglycerols, oxylipin-containing digalactosyldiacylglycerols, and oxylipin-containing phosphatidylglycerols increased firstly (after 1 h), and then decreased with the increase of oligochitosan treatment duration. In contrast, the total content of monogalactosyldiacylglycerols, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, and phosphatidylglycerols decreased firstly, and then increased with the increase of oligochitosan treatment duration. The amounts of free fatty acids (C16:2, C16:3, C18:2, and C18:3) were lower after treatment with oligochitosan for 1, 3, and 6 h than in the control, while the production of volatile organic compounds such as 2-hexenal (except for 3 h) and nonanal was higher than in the control. In conclusion, lipid metabolites of Arabidopsis thaliana were influenced by oligochitosan treatment, and the synthesized lipids and oxylipin-containing lipids were remodelled and free fatty acids was metabolized to volatile organic compounds.

Abstract

Carbon management of production planning involves multiple supply chain parties in different processes. This paper studies synergistic cooperation among supply chain parties for more effective emission reduction. Since a supply chain generally includes multiple parties, this paper focuses for simplicity on supplier, manufacturer and retailing. It studies a centralised make-to-order (MTO) production system involving a manufacturer and an internal supplier, with an objective to maximise the total profit by optimising the production lot sizes for the supplier and the manufacturer, who each operates a production line under MTO mode. The proposed model considers two carbon management scenarios of carbon cap and product sustainability under consumer green awareness, of which the impacts are deliberated with analytical solutions and numerical experiments. The result shows that the maximal profit can be achieved under carbon management constraints by adjusting the production lot size in both scenarios. Through sensitivity analysis, it is found that the carbon cap policy restricts the company profitability and that a high consumer green sensitivity can improve the profitability of green products. Therefore, the government and companies should cooperate to improve product sustainability and create greener markets. This paper contributes to the burgeoning field of carbon management in supply chain and provides theoretical guidance for adjusting production plans.

A systematic study of layered structures containing an InGaNAs/GaAs single quantum well (SQW) sandwiched between type-II AlAs/GaAs superlattices (SL) was carried out. The predominant optically detected cyclotron resonance (ODCR) peak was shown to be related to carriers with a 2D character and a cyclotron resonance effective mass.

Abstract

It has been found that aquifers containing clay particles possess a natural capacity of pollution attenuation and thereby are able to mitigate the effects of contamination. The main objective of this study was to simulate nitrate (NO3) movement and fate in porous media in presence of clay kaolin using a numerical and physical model in order to estimate the pollution attenuation capacity of kaolin. A noncommercial solute transport model known as Ground Water Key (GWK) was used to simulate NO3 concentration in an idealized physical model for this purpose. Nitrate polluted water at level 112.5 mg NO3 L−1 was introduced to the porous media of the physical model for experimental data collection and validation of numerical simulation by GWK. The results revealed that the GWK model can estimate NO3 concentration with a high level of accuracy in porous media in presence of kaolin. Nitrate concentrations in porous media and the dispersion coefficient were found to be sensitive to initial NO3 concentration. The results also revealed that kaolin can retain NO3 and thus is able to reduce NO3 pollution by approximately one-third. It is expected that the study results can be helpful in groundwater monitoring and protection.

Abstract

The first Water Cherenkov detector of the LHAASO experiment (WCDA-1) has been operating since April 2019. The data for the first year have been analyzed to test its performance by observing the Crab Nebula as a standard candle. The WCDA-1 achieves a sensitivity of 65 mCU per year, with a statistical threshold of 5 . To accomplish this, a 97.7% cosmic-ray background rejection rate around 1 TeV and 99.8% around 6 TeV with an approximate photon acceptance of 50% is achieved after applying an algorithm to separate gamma-induced showers. The angular resolution is measured using the Crab Nebula as a point source to be approximately 0.45° at 1 TeV and better than 0.2° above 6 TeV, with a pointing accuracy better than 0.05°. These values all match the design specifications. The energy resolution is found to be 33% for gamma rays around 6 TeV. The spectral energy distribution of the Crab Nebula in the range from 500 GeV to 15.8 TeV is measured and found to be in agreement with the results from other TeV gamma ray observatories.

Abstract

The process of rapid urbanization makes our planet’s natural ecosystems subject to strong interferences of different kinds of human activities, which affect the relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) supply and demand. Hence, unraveling the impact of urbanization on ESs supply and demand is urgently needed, especially in urban agglomerations. Previous case studies focused on the impact of land use change on ESs supply, and the relationship between urbanization and ESs supply and demand is still unclear. More precisely, the differences in the impact of population growth, economic development, and land use change on ES supply and demand remains unstudied. Taking the rapidly urbanized Pearl River Delta (PRD) urban agglomeration of China as an example, this study focused on four typical ESs, i.e. water yield, grain production, carbon sequestration and local recreation. The impact of urbanization on ESs supply and demand have been explored using regression analysis across regions characterized by different levels of urbanization. Furthermore, Random Forest, an algorithm based on decision tree, has been applied in order to assess the sensitivity of ESs supply and demand to urbanization. The results showed that, the total supply of various ESs decreased, while the total demand of the ESs increased, which resulted in an intensified spatial imbalance between ESs supply and demand from 2000 to 2015. In developed and developing urban areas, urbanization had no significant impact on ESs supply and demand, but urbanization had a significantly negative impact in rural areas. ESs supply and demand were most sensitive to (i) population density in developed urban areas, (ii) to population density, GDP density, and artificial land proportion in developing urban areas, and (iii) to artificial land proportion in rural areas. This study provides a basis for decision-making in the context of coordinated development of human and nature in rapidly urbanized areas.

Abstract

In the context of landscape fragmentation, a variety of ecological conservation theories have been proposed to maintain habitat connectivity. These theories focus on the connectivity of the ecological corridors in ecological space but ignore the community structure of ecological space. However, community structure is ubiquitous in ecological space. Our study predicted habitat quality of ecological patches by using an artificial neural network and species occurrence points. Then, the ecological space network (ESN) was proposed and constructed by taking large ecological patches and fragmented patches as habitat nodes. Based on island biogeography theory (TTIB) and network community detection, the ecological groups in the ESN were proposed and identified. They are considered to be collections of ecological land with close species connections. After that, the hierarchy of the ecological group was analyzed, and the existing policy was evaluated. The results show that there were 39 ecological groups in the ESN. The dendrogram of the hierarchy shows that all ecological groups can form five bigger ecological groups. The extent of the bigger groups proves that the ecological groups in the eastern part are closely connected. By analyzing the protection of ecological control lines on the linkages among ecological groups, we found that the existing policy could protect most of the ecological groups separately, but could not maintain connectivity among ecological groups, leading to habitat isolation. We believe that the concept of “ecological group” makes up for the lack of “habitat isolation” in the existing theory. The idea can understand the hierarchical structure of ecological space, which is conducive to the maintenance of ecological integrity.

Abstract

Assessing heatwave-induced human health risk is of critical importance in order to mitigate hazards caused by extreme environmental events. Air temperature or land surface temperature in previous studies was often used to characterize the severity of heatwaves, and human perception of the thermal environment was neglected as a key component in the heatwave-induced risk assessment. In order to redress this issue, in this study we applied the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) to represent human thermal comfort perception and embedded the measure within an assessment framework of heat stress-social vulnerability-human exposure. The heatwave-induced human health risk was then evaluated in Wuhan City, China across 177 blocks covering the entire city area and local risk governance measures were also explored based on risk zoning. The results showed that spatial patterns of heatwave-induced human health risk followed a decreasing trend from the city center towards the surrounding areas, with the average risk of the main urban area being 1.6 times that beyond the metropolitan development area. Through the heatwave-induced human health risk zoning, about 73.45% of the 177 blocks in Wuhan City demonstrated a positive relationship between heat stress and human exposure, and both were opposite with social vulnerability. Multiple linear regression between UTCI and the proportion of greenspace, water body and construction land indicated that, more blue or green infrastructure should be integrated within the urban fabric to help mitigate heat stress particularly in the main urban area, while in the metropolitan development area construction land dominating heat stress should be strictly regulated. Furthermore, protecting vulnerable groups such as left-behind children and elderly people should be a priority in rural areas that were generally associated with higher levels of social vulnerability. This study proposed a new heatwave-induced human health risk framework with a local evidence in Wuhan City, and further emphasized that risk zoning could be used as a basic yet important approach to facilitating more effective urban planning guidelines for risk governance.

Abstract

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with a single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) structure generally have excellent plasticity. However, its limited room temperature strength and hardness result in lower wear resistance, which hinders tribological and engineering applications. In this paper, the pack-boronizing method was used to improve the tribological properties of Al0·1CoCrFeNi HEAs with a single-phase FCC structure. The boronizing treatment was carried out at 900 °C for 2, 4, 6, and 8 h, respectively. The structure and phase formation of boronized alloys were studied. Moreover, the reciprocating sliding wear behavior of boronized alloys against Si3N4 balls in dry and deionized water was investigated. A boronized layer with a double-layer structure was formed on the HEA surface, with a total thickness of about 17.3–58.5 μm. The wear mechanism of boronized alloy was transformed from the abrasive and delamination wear to the polishing effect with increasing the boronizing time in air. In contrast, the wear mechanism of boronized alloys in the deionized water gradually changed from the two-body to three-body wear with increasing the boronizing time. Meanwhile, the wear mechanism of the Si3N4 counterface was also transformed to three-body wear gradually.

Abstract

Correlation of ecosystem services (ES) considering both the supply and demand sides remains unclear, and research on urbanization impact on the ES supply-demand budget is lacking. Taking the rapidly urbanizing Pearl River Delta (PRD) urban agglomeration of China as an example, eight ES supply, demand and the supply-demand budget of 374 watersheds were quantified using an expert-based matrix. The trade-offs and synergies of ES were then explored from both the supply and demand sides, with identifying the ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) of supply, demand, and the supply-demand budget separately. Through decoupling analysis, the urbanization impact on the ES supply-demand budget was explored. The results showed that ESs were well supplied in high-altitude areas in the PRD urban agglomeration, and that watersheds with insufficient ES supply were concentrated along the Pearl River where population density was high. It was also observed that there were significant synergistic relationships in the ES supply-demand budget. And the average decoupling index of the supply-demand budget for total ES and the three urbanization indicators increased from GDP to DN of nighttime light, and to Population density. It is an important way to identify the trade-offs and synergies between ES supply-demand budgets, and to explore the decoupling between the ES supply-demand budget and urbanization, in order to provide comprehensive decision-making support for ES management in rapidly urbanized areas.

Abstract

The acceleration of urbanization has aggravated the fragmentation of ecological patches and increased the uncertainty risk of habitat connectivity. In the context of landscape fragmentation, government need to establish sound policies that effectively protect the stepping-stones of habitat connection and realize urban ecological integration. In this study, a circuit theory model was used to identify the potential ecological corridors in the city and corresponding stepping-stone groups, with two important stepping-stone groups selected as our areas of focus. By establishing the potential linkages between stepping-stone nodes, we constructed stepping-stone networks within the potential ecological corridors and formulated four scenarios to analyze the robustness of the stepping-stone networks under different policies. The results show that there are 46 important habitats and 22 potential ecological corridors in Shenzhen, including 22 stepping-stone networks. The most important stepping-stone network in the central Shenzhen area connects 7 important habitats and contains 110 stepping-stone nodes. The most important stepping-stone network in the northeast area of Shenzhen connects 5 important habitats and contains 130 stepping-stone nodes. Comparing the robustness and form of the stepping-stone networks under the four policy scenarios, we found that the centrality of stepping-stones is of great significance for maintaining the connectivity of important habitats. For instance, there are five stepping-stone networks in Shenzhen that have not been successfully protected by existing ecological protection policies because their highly central nodes are vulnerable to threats. This study analyzed the maintenance of habitat connectivity under different ecological protection policies in the process of urbanization and discussed the significance of highly central stepping-stone nodes in maintaining habitat connectivity. With this effort, a new perspective on habitat connectivity protection under landscape fragmentation is provided, producing a reference for the formulation of urban ecological protection policy.

Abstract

This paper offers a damage identification and structural effect evaluation thought based on health monitoring system for large-scale bridge structures. By analyzing the sensitivity of response to traffic load, the concept and building method of categorized traffic are introduced, which categorizes the traffic into light class and heavy class on statistical periods, and the loading response of heavy class in the evaluation of structural response is prioritized. Th is concept of categorized traffic can be seen as a new understanding method for traffic flow loading and tr affic characteristics. And it provides a new perspective to m easure the traffic with different dim ensions, which can bring convenience to br idge structure assessm ent. Then parameter characteristics and relativity of categorized traffic are counted to set the parameters and building forms of response evaluation model of categorized traffic. This paper endeavors to tr ansfer the target of the system evaluation from safety to perform ance based on the practical application of the system and aim s to improve the monitoring sensibility and propose new insi ght for its development via real-time corresponding between response data and load data over a synchronized period.

Abstract

The glutenite reservoir is widely distributed in China and has huge potential for hydrocarbon resources exploration. However, due to the near-source sedimentation and rapid facies transition mechanism, the glutenite reservoirs have strong heterogeneity with low porosity and complex pore structures, which makes it difficult to be predicted from seismic data. In this paper, we combine the Zoeppritz-based prestack seismic inversion method with rock physics analysis of glutenite reservoirs to characterize the oil distribution. Sensitivity analysis of different fluid indicators demonstrates that Poisson's ratio is effective to distinguish oil glutenite reservoirs from dry glutenite and shale formations. Application in Mahu slope area of Junggar basin shows that the oil glutenite reservoir prediction results are consistent with well log interpretation and production data, which verifies the effectiveness and accuracy of this method and can provide a significant guidance for the further exploration of glutenite hydrocarbon reservoirs.
