1. Dataset of spatially extensive long-term quality-assured land–atmosphere interactions over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: The climate of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has experienced substantial changes in recent decades as a result of the location's susceptibility to global climate change. The changes observed across the TP are closely associated with regional land–atmosphere interactions. Current models and satellites struggle to accurately depict the interactions; therefore, critical field observations on land–atmosphere interactions outlined here provide necessary independent validation data and fine-scale process insights for constraining reanalysis products, remote sensing retrievals, and land surface model parameterizations. Scientific data sharing is crucial for the TP since in situ observations are rarely available under these harsh conditions. However, field observations are currently dispersed among individuals or groups and have not yet been integrated for comprehensive analysis. This has prevented a better understanding of the interactions, the unprecedented changes they generate, and the substantial ecological and environmental consequences they bring about. In this study, we collaborated with different agencies and organizations to present a comprehensive dataset for hourly measurements of surface energy balance components, soil hydrothermal properties, and near-surface micrometeorological conditions spanning up to 17 years (2005–2021). This dataset, derived from 12 field stations covering a variety of typical TP landscapes, provides the most extensive in situ observation data available for studying land–atmosphere interactions on the TP to date in terms of both spatial coverage and duration. Three categories of observations are provided in this dataset: meteorological gradient data (met), soil hydrothermal data (soil), and turbulent flux data (flux). To assure data quality, a set of rigorous data-processing and quality control procedures are implemented for all observation elements (e.g., wind speed and direction at different height) in this dataset. The operational workflow and procedures are individually tailored to the varied types of elements at each station, including automated error screening, manual inspection, diagnostic checking, adjustments, and quality flagging. The hourly raw data series; the quality-assured data; and supplementary information, including data integrity and the percentage of correct data on a monthly scale, are provided via the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center (https://doi.org/10.11888/Atmos.tpdc.300977, Ma et al., 2023a). With the greatest number of stations covered, the fullest collection of meteorological elements, and the longest duration of observations and recordings to date, this dataset is the most extensive hourly land–atmosphere interaction observation dataset for the TP. It will serve as the benchmark for evaluating and refining land surface models, reanalysis products, and remote sensing retrievals, as well as for characterizing fine-scale land–atmosphere interaction processes of the TP and underlying influence mechanisms.

2. Advancing understanding of lake–watershed hydrology: a fully coupled numerical model illustrated by Qinghai Lake

Abstract: Understanding the intricate hydrological interactions between lakes and their surrounding watersheds is pivotal for advancing hydrological research, optimizing water resource management, and informing climate change mitigation strategies. Yet, these complex dynamics are often insufficiently captured in existing hydrological models, such as the bi-direction surface and subsurface flow. To bridge this gap, we introduce a novel lake–watershed coupled model, an enhancement of the Simulator of Hydrological Unstructured Domains. This high-resolution, distributed model employs unstructured triangles as its fundamental hydrological computing units (HCUs), offering a physical approach to hydrological modeling. We validated our model using data from Qinghai Lake in China, spanning from 1979 to 2018. Remarkably, the model not only successfully simulated the streamflow of the Buha River, a key river within the Qinghai Lake basin, achieving a Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of 0.62 and 0.76 for daily and monthly streamflow, respectively, but also accurately reproduced the decrease–increase U-shaped curve of lake level change over the past 40 years, with an NSE of 0.71. Our model uniquely distinguishes the contributions of various components to the lake's long-term water balance, including river runoff, surface direct runoff, lateral groundwater contribution, direct evaporation, and precipitation. This work underscores the potential of our coupled model as a powerful tool for understanding and predicting hydrological processes in lake basins, thereby contributing to more effective water resource management and climate change mitigation strategies.

3. Particle phase state and aerosol liquid water greatly impact secondary aerosol formation: insights into phase transition and its role in haze events

Abstract: The particle phase state is crucial for reactive gas uptake, heterogeneous, and multiphase chemical reactions, thereby impacting secondary aerosol formation. This study provides valuable insights into the significance of particle-phase transition and aerosol liquid water (ALW) in particle mass growth during winter. Our findings reveal that particles predominantly exist in a semi-solid or solid state during clean winter days with ambient relative humidity (RH) below 30 %. However, a non-liquid to liquid phase transition occurs when the ALW mass fraction exceeds 15 % (dry mass) at transition RH thresholds of 40 %–60 %. During haze episodes, the transformation rates of sulfate and nitrate aerosols rapidly increase through phase transition and increased ALW by 48 % and 11 %, respectively, resulting in noticeable increases in secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA). The presence of abundant ALW, favored by elevated RH and higher proportion of SIA, facilitates the partitioning of water-soluble compounds from the gas to the particle phase, as well as heterogeneous and aqueous processes in liquid particles. This leads to a substantial increase in the formation of secondary organic aerosols and elevated aerosol oxidation. Consequently, the overall hygroscopicity parameters exhibit a substantial enhancement, with a mean value of 23 %. These results highlight phase transition as a key factor initiating the positive feedback loops between ALW and secondary aerosol formation during haze episodes over the North China Plain. Accurate predictions of secondary aerosol formation necessitate explicit consideration of the particle phase state in chemical transport models.

4. rSHUD v2.0: advancing the Simulator for Hydrologic Unstructured Domains and unstructured hydrological modeling in the R environment

Abstract: Hydrological modeling is a crucial component in hydrology research, particularly for projecting future scenarios. However, achieving reproducibility and automation in distributed hydrological modeling research for modeling, simulation, and analysis is challenging. This paper introduces rSHUD v2.0, an innovative, open-source toolkit developed in the R environment to enhance the deployment and analysis of the Simulator for Hydrologic Unstructured Domains (SHUD). The SHUD is an integrated surface–subsurface hydrological model that employs a finite-volume method to simulate hydrological processes at various scales. The rSHUD toolkit includes pre- and post-processing tools, facilitating reproducibility and automation in hydrological modeling. The utility of rSHUD is demonstrated through case studies of the Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory in the USA and the Waerma watershed in China. The rSHUD toolkit's ability to quickly and automatically deploy models while ensuring reproducibility has facilitated the implementation of the Global Hydrological Data Cloud (https://ghdc.ac.cn, last access: 1 September 2023), a platform for automatic data processing and model deployment. This work represents a significant advancement in hydrological modeling, with implications for future scenario projections and spatial analysis.

Abstract: Converter blown limestone powder steelmaking process has the advantages of energy saving and high efficiency to meet the needs of low carbon metallurgy. Based on a thermogravimetric-differential thermal analyzer, the effect of high CO2 partial pressure on the pyrolysis behavior of limestone at steelmaking temperatures was investigated at 20 °C/min, 30 °C/min, and 40 °C/min, the kinetic parameters of limestone pyrolysis were calculated by the improved double extrapolation method.

6. Study on the participation of blowing CO2 in steelmaking reaction of Fe-C binary alloy

Abstract: Based on the concept of green low-carbon and high-efficiency smelting, Fe-C alloys were prepared using industrial pure iron and high-purity graphite powder, and thermal experiments were carried out using a high-tem perature tube furnace, and it was found that with the increase of blowing time, the carbon content in the molten pool was reduced subsequently; The reaction rates of CO2 with (C) were 11,03 %, 12,94 %, 16,51 %, and 18,75 % at blowing flow rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40/ml·min-1, respectively; The decarburization rate increased from 0,0172 %/min to 0,0289 %/min, and the decarburization reaction rate is subsequently increased 1,68 times.

7. A new smog chamber system for atmospheric multiphase chemistry study: design and characterization

Abstract: Multiphase chemistry is an important pathway for the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) in the atmosphere. In this study, an indoor 2 m3 Teflon chamber system (Aerosol multIphase chemistry Research chamber, AIR) was developed and characterized to specifically simulate atmospheric multiphase chemistry processes. The temperature and humidity controls, diurnal variation simulation, and seed particle generation unit in this chamber system were designed to meet the needs of simulating multiphase atmospheric chemical reactions. The AIR chamber is able to accurately control temperature (2.5–31 ± 0.15 ∘C) and relative humidity (RH %–>95 % ± 0.75 %) over a relatively broad range. In addition, an RH regulation module inside the chamber was designed to simulate the diurnal variation of ambient atmospheric RH. The aerosol generation unit is able to generate pre-deliquescent seed particles with an organic coating across a wide range of phase states or morphologies. The organic coating thickness of the aerosols within the chamber can be precisely controlled through adjusting the condensation temperature, further helping to elucidate the roles of seed particles in multiphase chemical reactions. The inner walls of the AIR chamber are passivated to reduce the wall loss rates of reactive gases. Yield experiments of α-pinene ozonolysis with and without seed particles combined with a box model simulation demonstrate the high-quality performance of secondary aerosol formation simulation using the AIR chamber.

Abstract: PyRS is a Python package developed for processing remotely sensed data. It provides a user-friendly interface to handle various remote sensing tasks, including data reading, radiometric correction, image enhancement, image denoising, image segmentation, land cover classification, change detection, construction of remote sensing indices, quantitative inversion. PyRS includes a wide range of state-of-the-art algorithms and tools for processing optical data. PyRS is an open-source project that is continually updated and maintained by a group of developers. It is designed to be modular and extensible, allowing users to add new algorithms and functionality to the package. PyRS is widely used in the remote sensing community and has been applied to various applications, such as land cover mapping, crop monitoring, and disaster response. PyRS is a comprehensive and powerful Python package for processing remotely sensed data. Its user-friendly interface, broad range of functionalities, and open-source nature make it an attractive tool for researchers and practitioners in the remote sensing field. PyRS encapsulates the current mainstream remote sensing algorithms, which can greatly improve the scientific research efficiency of researchers in the field of remote sensing. The form of Python packages and the characteristics of open source make it more flexible and transparent than professional remote sensing processing software. PyRS will contribute to the progress and development of geomatics education.

Abstract: Remote sensing data is a primary means of obtaining information about the Earth's surface, widely used in various fields such as geographic information, natural resource management, urban planning, and environmental monitoring. However, due to the large volume and high complexity of remote sensing image data obtained from satellites, drones, and other equipment, efficient processing of this data and visualization of the results have become important issues. This paper presents a Cesium-based platform for visualizing multi-source remote sensing data, aimed at contributing to urban development efforts and providing additional insights for surveying education.This platform allows users to intuitively understand the spatial distribution and dynamic changes of remote sensing data. It not only integrates different types of remote sensing data into a unified 3D scene but also allows users to interact with the data according to their needs. A Cesium-based urban visualization platform was developed to display the geographic location of a specific region in Hong Kong and provide spatial measurement functions. This platform has wider applications in surveying and mapping education, as it can incorporate more remote sensing and geospatial data, allowing for increased student-teacher interaction and helping students better understand surveying and mapping concepts.Focusing on the construction of smart cities, the platform improves spatial awareness and interactivity for urban planning and management. Moreover, the platform has great potential in surveying and mapping education, providing a more immersive learning experience for students and cultivating talents in the field.

Abstract: Innovation leads the development of technology and society, so the position of innovation and entrepreneurship training to nurture innovative talents is very important. The paper explores the ‘trinity’ innovation and entrepreneurship talent training model of ‘promoting learning through competition, education through competition, and innovation through competition’, focus on high level innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, enhance the stickiness among colleges, educators, students, and social enterprises, and enable students to participate in extracurricular academic activities that are highly consistent with the needs of the industrial market. To achieve this goal, School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering of Wuhan University puts forward a ‘remote sensing +’ training model. Through the two-year practice of this model, 136 students from different schools and majors participated in the training of the ‘Remote Sensing +’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center in Wuhan University, and won three gold awards in the China's largest innovation and entrepreneurship competition. Due to the characteristics of cross-integration of remote sensing science and technology itself, it has played a supporting role in innovation education, integrating other multi-specialized knowledge, and providing more entrepreneurial and employment opportunities for students of related majors.

12. What caused the interdecadal shift in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impact on dust mass concentration over northwestern South Asia?

Abstract: Changes in large-scale circulation, especially El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), have significant impacts on dust activities over the dust source and downwind regions. However, these impacts present an interdecadal pattern, and it remains less clear which factors lead to the interdecadal variability of the ENSO impact on dust activities over northwestern South Asia, although previous studies have discussed the response of interannual dust activities over northwestern South Asia to the ENSO circle. Based on the linear regression model and MERRA-2 atmospheric aerosol reanalysis data, this study investigated the interdecadal variability of the ENSO impact on dust activities as well as the associated possible atmospheric drivers under two different warming phases over northwestern South Asia. Results indicated that the relationship between ENSO and dust column mass density (DUCMASS) experienced an obvious shift from the accelerated global warming period (1982–1996) to the warming hiatus period (2000–2014). The change in Atlantic and Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) patterns weakened the impact of ENSO on dust activities over northwestern South Asia during 1982–1996, while the change in Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) strengthened ENSO's effect when it was in phase with ENSO. Both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean SSTA patterns were modulated by the duration of ENSO events (i.e., continuing and emerging ENSO). This study provides new insights into numerical simulation involving the influence of atmospheric teleconnections on the variability of dust activities and their influence mechanisms.

14. Intricate relations among particle collision, relative motion and clustering in turbulent clouds: computational observation and theory

Abstract: Considering turbulent clouds containing small inertial particles, we investigate the effect of particle collision, in particular collision–coagulation, on particle clustering and particle relative motion. We perform direct numerical simulation (DNS) of coagulating particles in isotropic turbulent flow in the regime of small Stokes number (St=0.001–0.54) and find that, due to collision–coagulation, the radial distribution functions (RDFs) fall off dramatically at scales r∼d (where d is the particle diameter) to small but finite values, while the mean radial component of the particle relative velocity (MRV) increases sharply in magnitude. Based on a previously proposed Fokker–Planck (drift-diffusion) framework, we derive a theoretical account of the relationship among particle collision–coagulation rate, RDF and MRV. The theory includes contributions from turbulent fluctuations absent in earlier mean-field theories. We show numerically that the theory accurately accounts for the DNS results (i.e., given an accurate RDF, the theory could produce an accurate MRV). Separately, we also propose a phenomenological model that could directly predict MRV and find that it is accurate when calibrated using fourth moments of the fluid velocities. We use the model to derive a general solution of RDF. We uncover a paradox: the past empirical success of the differential version of the theory is theoretically unjustified. We see a further shape-preserving reduction of the RDF (and MRV) when the gravitational settling parameter (Sg) is of order O(1). Our results demonstrate strong coupling between RDF and MRV and imply that earlier isolated studies on either RDF or MRV have limited relevance for predicting particle collision rate.

Abstract: With increasing adoption of advanced meter infrastructure, smart sensors together with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, it is imperative to develop novel data analytics and couple the results with hydraulic modeling to improve the quality and efficiency of water services. One important task is to timely detect and localize anomaly events, which may include, but not be limited to, pipe bursts and unauthorized water usages. In this paper, a comprehensive solution framework has been developed for anomaly detection and localization by formulating and integrating data-driven analytics with hydraulic model calibration. Data analysis for anomaly detection proceeds in multiple steps including the following: (1) data pre-processing to eliminate and correct erroneous data records, (2) outlier detection by statistical process control methods and deep machine learning, and (3) system anomaly classification by correlation analysis of multiple sensor events. Classified system anomaly events are subsequently localized via hydraulic model calibration. The integrated solution framework is developed as a user-friendly and effective software tool, tested, and validated on the selected target areas in Singapore. 16. A fine-resolution soil moisture dataset for China in 2002–2018

Abstract: Soil moisture is an important parameter required for agricultural drought monitoring and climate change models. Passive microwave remote sensing technology has become an important means to quickly obtain soil moisture across large areas, but the coarse spatial resolution of microwave data imposes great limitations on the application of these data. We provide a unique soil moisture dataset (0.05∘, monthly) for China from 2002 to 2018 based on reconstruction model-based downscaling techniques using soil moisture data from different passive microwave products – including AMSR-E and AMSR2 (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System) JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Level 3 products and SMOS-IC (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity designed by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, INRA, and Centre d’Etudes Spatiales de la BIOsphère, CESBIO) products – calibrated with a consistent model in combination with ground observation data. This new fine-resolution soil moisture dataset with a high spatial resolution overcomes the multisource data time matching problem between optical and microwave data sources and eliminates the difference between the different sensor observation errors. The validation analysis indicates that the accuracy of the new dataset is satisfactory (bias: −0.057, −0.063 and −0.027 m3 m−3; unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE): 0.056, 0.036 and 0.048; correlation coefficient (R): 0.84, 0.85 and 0.89 on monthly, seasonal and annual scales, respectively). The new dataset was used to analyze the spatiotemporal patterns of soil water content across China from 2002 to 2018. In the past 17 years, China's soil moisture has shown cyclical fluctuations and a slight downward trend and can be summarized as wet in the south and dry in the north, with increases in the west and decreases in the east. The reconstructed dataset can be widely used to significantly improve hydrologic and drought monitoring and can serve as an important input for ecological and other geophysical models. 17. Phase state of secondary organic aerosol in chamber photo-oxidation of mixed precursors

Abstract: The phase behaviour of aerosol particles plays a profound role in atmospheric physicochemical processes, influencing their physical and optical properties and further impacting climate and air quality. However, understanding of the aerosol phase state is still incomplete, especially that of multicomponent particles which contain inorganic compounds and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from mixed volatile organic compound (VOC) precursors. We report measurements conducted in the Manchester Aerosol Chamber (MAC) to investigate the aerosol rebounding tendency, measured as the bounce fraction, as a surrogate of the aerosol phase state during SOA formation from photo-oxidation of biogenic (α-pinene and isoprene) and anthropogenic (o-cresol) VOCs and their binary mixtures on deliquescent ammonium sulfate seed. Aerosol phase state is dependent on relative humidity (RH) and chemical composition (key factors determining aerosol water uptake). Liquid (bounce fraction; BF < 0.2) at RH > 80 % and nonliquid behaviour (BF > 0.8) at RH < 30 % were observed, with a liquid-to-nonliquid transition with decreasing RH between 30 % and 80 %. This RH-dependent phase behaviour (RHBF=0.2,0.5,0.8) increased towards a maximum, with an increasing organic–inorganic mass ratio (MRorg/inorg) during SOA formation evolution in all investigated VOC systems. With the use of comparable initial ammonium sulfate seed concentration, the SOA production rate of the VOC systems determines the MRorg/inorg and, consequently, the change in the phase behaviour. Although less important than RH and MRorg/inorg, the SOA composition plays a second-order role, with differences in the liquid-to-nonliquid transition at moderate MRorg/inorg of ∼1 observed between biogenic-only (anthropogenic-free) and anthropogenic-containing VOC systems. Considering the combining role of the RH and chemical composition in aerosol phase state, the BF decreased monotonically with increasing hygroscopic growth factor (GF), and the BF was ∼0 when GF was larger than 1.15. The real atmospheric consequences of our results are that any processes changing ambient RH or MRorg/inorg (aerosol liquid water) will influence their phase state. Where abundant anthropogenic VOCs contribute to SOA, compositional changes in SOA may influence phase behaviour at moderate organic mass fraction (∼50 %) compared with purely biogenic SOA. Further studies are needed on more complex and realistic atmospheric mixtures.

18. A combined Terra and Aqua MODIS land surface temperature and meteorological station data product for China from 2003 to 2017

Abstract: Land surface temperature (LST) is a key variable for high temperature and drought monitoring and climate and ecological environment research. Due to the sparse distribution of ground observation stations, thermal infrared remote sensing technology has become an important means of quickly obtaining ground temperature over large areas. However, there are many missing and low-quality values in satellite-based LST data because clouds cover more than 60 % of the global surface every day. This article presents a unique LST dataset with a monthly temporal resolution for China from 2003 to 2017 that makes full use of the advantages of MODIS data and meteorological station data to overcome the defects of cloud influence via a reconstruction model. We specifically describe the reconstruction model, which uses a combination of MODIS daily data, monthly data and meteorological station data to reconstruct the LST in areas with cloud coverage and for grid cells with elevated LST error, and the data performance is then further improved by establishing a regression analysis model. The validation indicates that the new LST dataset is highly consistent with in situ observations. For the six natural subregions with different climatic conditions in China, verification using ground observation data shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) ranges from 1.24 to 1.58 ∘C, the mean absolute error (MAE) varies from 1.23 to 1.37 ∘C and the Pearson coefficient (R2) ranges from 0.93 to 0.99. The new dataset adequately captures the spatiotemporal variations in LST at annual, seasonal and monthly scales. From 2003 to 2017, the overall annual mean LST in China showed a weak increase. Moreover, the positive trend was remarkably unevenly distributed across China. The most significant warming occurred in the central and western areas of the Inner Mongolia Plateau in the Northwest Region, and the average annual temperature change is greater than 0.1 K (R>0.71, P<0.05), and a strong negative trend was observed in some parts of the Northeast Region and South China Region. Seasonally, there was significant warming in western China in winter, which was most pronounced in December. The reconstructed dataset exhibits significant improvements and can be used for the spatiotemporal evaluation of LST in high-temperature and drought-monitoring studies. 19. Exploring the inconsistent variations in atmospheric primary and secondary pollutants during the 2016 G20 summit in Hangzhou, China: implications from observations and models

Abstract: Complex aerosol and photochemical pollution (ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate, PAN) frequently occur in eastern China, and mitigation strategies to effectively alleviate both kinds of pollution are urgently needed. Although the effectiveness of powerful control measures implemented by the Chinese State Council has been comprehensively evaluated in terms of reducing atmospheric primary pollutants, the effectiveness in mitigating photochemical pollution is less assessed and therefore the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The stringent emission controls implemented from 24 August to 6 September 2016 during the summit for the Group of Twenty (G20) provide us a unique opportunity to address this issue. Surface concentrations of atmospheric O3, PAN, and their precursors including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen dioxides (NOx), in addition to the other trace gases and particulate matter, were measured at the National Reference Climatological Station (NRCS) (30.22∘ N, 120.17∘ E, 41.7 m a.s.l) in urban Hangzhou. We found significant decreases in atmospheric PAN, NOx, total VOCs, PM2.5, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) under the unfavorable meteorological conditions during G20 (DG20) relative to the adjacent period before and after G20 (BG20 and AG20), indicating that the powerful control measures were effective in reducing the pollutant emissions in Hangzhou. Unlike with the other pollutants, daily maximum 8 h average (DMA8) O3 exhibited a slight increase and then decrease from BG20 to AG20, which was mainly attributed to the variation in the solar irradiation intensity and regional transport in addition to the contribution from the implementation of stringent control measures. Results from an observation-based chemical model (OBM) indicated that acetaldehyde and methylglyoxal (MGLY) were the most important second-generation precursors of PAN, accounting for 37.3 %–51.6 % and 22.8 %–29.5 % of the total production rates including the reactions of OVOCs, propagation of other radicals, and other minor sources. Moreover, we confirmed the production of PAN and O3 was sensitive to VOCs throughout the whole period, specifically dominated by aromatics in BG20 and DG20 but by alkenes in AG20. These findings suggested that reducing emissions of aromatics, alkenes, and alkanes would mitigate photochemical pollution including PAN and O3. Source appointment results attributed the reductions of VOC source and ozone formation potentials (OFPs) during G20 to the effective emission controls on traffic (vehicle exhaust) and industrial processes (solvent utilization and industrial manufacturing). However, fuel combustion and biogenic emissions both weakened such an effect with a sizable contribution to the VOC mixing ratios (18.8 % and 20.9 %) and OFPs (25.6 % and 17.8 %), especially during the latter part of G20 (G20 II) when anthropogenic VOCs were substantially reduced. This study highlights the effectiveness of stringent emission controls in relation to traffic and industrial sources, but a coordinated program related to controlling fuel combustion and biogenic emissions is also required to address secondary pollution.

Abstract: Water vapour is an important substituent of the atmosphere but its spatial and temporal distribution is difficult to detect. Global Positioning System (GPS) water vapour tomography, which can sense three-dimensional water vapour distribution, has been developed as a research area in the field of GPS meteorology. In this paper, a new water vapour tomography method based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to overcome the ill-conditioned problem. The proposed approach does not need to perform matrix inversion, and it does not rely on excessive constraints, a priori information or external data. Experiments in Hong Kong under rainy and rainless conditions using this approach show that there is a serious ill-conditioned problem in the tomographic matrix by grayscale and condition numbers. Numerical results show that the average root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) for internal and external accuracy are 1.52∕0.94 and 10.07∕8.44 mm, respectively, with the GAMIT-estimated slant water vapour (SWV) as a reference. Comparative results of water vapour density (WVD) derived from radiosonde data reveal that the tomographic results based on GA with a total RMSE ∕ MAE of 1.43∕1.19 mm are in good agreement with that of radiosonde measurements. In comparison to the traditional least squares method, the GA can achieve a reliable tomographic result with high accuracy without the restrictions mentioned above. Furthermore, the tomographic results in a rainless scenario are better than those of a rainy scenario, and the reasons are discussed in detail in this paper.

Abstract: Abstract The object of this study was to obtain the acoustic properties of fine sandy sediments with approximately 22% clay content from the East China Sea Shelf. This study conducted the in situ acoustic measurement to measure the sound speed and attenuation, and eight sediment cores were collected and measured the wet bulk density, porosity, and mean grain size in laboratory environment. The correlations between in situ sound speed ratio and physical properties show good accordance with two empirical equations, while the in situ attenuation factor deviated the regression curves. Both the sound speed ratio and the attenuation data show the obvious change against the measurement frequency. The comparisons of the measured sound speed ratio and attenuation to the Biot‐Stoll model predictions were performed. The sound speed ratio dispersion agrees well with the model prediction, when the permeability and pore size were calculated using the extended Kozeny‐Carman's equation and the extended Hovem's equation. The attenuation data in this study accords better with the prediction curves reported for fine sediments than that for coarse sediments from the 1999 Sediment Acoustics Experiment.

22. Classification of High Density Regions in Global Ionospheric Maps With Neural Networks

Abstract: Abstract The database of Global Ionospheric Maps (GIMs) produced at Jet Propulsion Laboratory is analyzed. We define high density total electron content (TEC) regions (HDRs) in a map, following certain selection criteria. For the first time, we trained four convolutional neural networks (CNNs) corresponding to four phases of a solar cycle to classify the GIMs by the number of HDRs in each map with ∼80% accuracy on average. We compared HDR counts for GIMs across ten years to draw conclusions on how the number of HDRs in the GIMs changes throughout the solar cycle. Occurrence of HDRs during different geomagnetic activity conditions is discussed. Catalog of selected HDRs for ten years and four CNN‐based models that can be used to extend classification to other years are provided for the community to use.

Abstract: The rapid advancement of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) occultation technology in recent years has made it one of the most advanced space-based remote sensing technologies of the 21st century. GNSS radio occultation has many advantages, including all-weather operation, global coverage, high vertical resolution, high precision, long-term stability, and self-calibration. Data products from GNSS occultation sounding can greatly enhance ionospheric observations and contribute to space weather monitoring, forecasting, modeling, and research. In this study, GNSS occultation sounder (GNOS) results from a radio occultation sounding payload aboard the Fengyun 3 C (FY3-C) satellite were compared with ground-based ionosonde observations. Correlation coefficients for peak electron density (NmF2) derived from GNOS Global Position System (GPS) and Beidou navigation system (BDS) products with ionosonde data were higher than 0.9, and standard deviations were less than 20 %. Global ionospheric effects of the strong magnetic storm event in March 2015 were analyzed using GNOS results supported by ionosonde observations. The magnetic storm caused a significant disturbance in NmF2 level. Suppressed daytime and nighttime NmF2 levels indicated mainly negative storm conditions. In two longitude section zones of geomagnetic inclination between 40 and 80∘, the results of average NmF2 observed by GNOS and ground-based ionosondes showed the same basic trends during the geomagnetic storm and confirmed the negative effect of this storm event on the ionosphere. The analysis demonstrates the reliability of the GNSS radio occultation sounding instrument GNOS aboard the FY3-C satellite and confirms the utility of ionosphere products from GNOS for statistical and event-specific ionospheric physical analyses. Future FY3 series satellites and increasing numbers of Beidou navigation satellites will provide increasing GNOS occultation data on the ionosphere, which will contribute to ionosphere research and forecasting applications.

Abstract: In this paper, the Geometric Optics (GO)/Physical Optics (PO) method is improved to analyze the terahertz (THz)-wave scattering characteristics of objects with multiple small-scale grooves, where the grooves are of the same size. For the traditional GO/PO method, when the number of grooves reaches dozens or even hundreds, the existence of a large number of redundant intersection tests will be a main limitation to calculate the electromagnetic (EM) scattering in THz band. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, the scattered field from one of the grooves is computed using the GO/PO method and extended to obtain the scattered field of the other grooves according to their dimensional information. In this way, the computation load is effectively reduced. To demonstrate the validity of our method, the results are compared with those of MLFMM, traditional GO/PO method and experimental data. A good agreement is achieved. Meanwhile, the runtime of our method is compared with that of traditional GO/PO method, where the computational time is greatly saved. Furthermore, the scattering characteristics of objects with multiple small-scale grooves in THz band is studied. The simulation results show that the small-scale grooves will have a great effect on EM scattering characteristics in THz band.

Abstract: We present hourly climate data to force land surface process models and assessments over the Merced and Tuolumne watersheds in the Sierra Nevada, California, for the water year 2010–2014 period. Climate data (38 stations) include temperature and humidity (23), precipitation (13), solar radiation (8), and wind speed and direction (8), spanning an elevation range of 333 to 2987 m. Each data set contains raw data as obtained from the source (Level 0), data that are serially continuous with noise and nonphysical points removed (Level 1), and, where possible, data that are gap filled using linear interpolation or regression with a nearby station record (Level 2). All stations chosen for this data set were known or documented to be regularly maintained and components checked and calibrated during the period. Additional time-series data included are available snow water equivalent records from automated stations (8) and manual snow courses (22), as well as distributed snow depth and co-located soil moisture measurements (2–6) from four locations spanning the rain–snow transition zone in the center of the domain. Spatial data layers pertinent to snowpack modeling in this data set are basin polygons and 100 m resolution rasters of elevation, vegetation type, forest canopy cover, tree height, transmissivity, and extinction coefficient. Abstract: Accurate water-balance measurements in the seasonal, snow-dominated Sierra Nevada are important for forest and downstream water management. However, few sites in the southern Sierra offer detailed records of the spatial and temporal patterns of snowpack and soil-water storage and the fluxes affecting them, i.e., precipitation as rain and snow, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, and runoff. To explore these stores and fluxes we instrumented the Wolverton basin (2180–2750 m) in Sequoia National Park with distributed, continuous sensors. This 2006–2016 record of snow depth, soil moisture and soil temperature, and meteorological data quantifies the hydrologic inputs and storage in a mostly undeveloped catchment. Clustered sensors record lateral differences with regards to aspect and canopy cover at approximately 2250 and 2625 m in elevation, where two meteorological stations are installed. Meteorological stations record air temperature, relative humidity, radiation, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and snow depth. Abstract: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Occultation Sounder (GNOS) is one of the new-generation payloads on board the Chinese FengYun 3 (FY-3) series of operational meteorological satellites for sounding the Earth's neutral atmosphere and ionosphere. FY-3C GNOS, on board the FY-3 series C satellite launched in September 2013, was designed to acquire setting and rising radio occultation (RO) data by using GNSS signals from both the Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and the US Global Positioning System (GPS). So far, the GNOS measurements and atmospheric and ionospheric data products have been validated and evaluated and then been used for atmosphere- and ionosphere-related scientific applications.This paper reviews the FY-3C GNOS instrument, RO data processing, data quality evaluation, and preliminary research applications according to the state-of-the-art status of the FY-3C GNOS mission and related publications. The reviewed data validation and application results demonstrate that the FY-3C GNOS mission can provide accurate and precise atmospheric and ionospheric GNSS (i.e., GPS and BDS) RO profiles for numerical weather prediction (NWP), global climate monitoring (GCM), and space weather research (SWR). The performance of the FY-3C GNOS product quality evaluation and scientific applications establishes confidence that the GNOS data from the series of FY-3 satellites will provide important contributions to NWP, GCM, and SWR scientific communities.

Abstract: We strategically placed spatially distributed sensors to provide representative measures of changes in snowpack and subsurface water storage, plus the fluxes affecting these stores, in a set of nested headwater catchments. The high temporal frequency and distributed coverage make the resulting data appropriate for process studies of snow accumulation and melt, infiltration, evapotranspiration, catchment water balance, (bio)geochemistry, and other critical-zone processes. We present 8 years of hourly snow-depth, soil-moisture, and soil-temperature data, as well as 14 years of quarter-hourly streamflow and meteorological data that detail water-balance processes at Providence Creek, the upper part of which is at the current 50 % rain versus snow transition of the southern Sierra Nevada, California. Providence Creek is the long-term study cooperatively run by the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory (SSCZO) and the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station's Kings River Experimental Watersheds (KREW). The 4.6 km2 montane Providence Creek catchment spans the current lower rain–snow transition elevation of 1500–2100 m. Two meteorological stations bracket the high and low elevations of the catchment, measuring air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and snow depth, and at the higher station, snow water equivalent. Paired flumes at three subcatchments and a V-notch weir at the integrating catchment measure quarter-hourly streamflow. Measurements of meteorological and streamflow data began in 2002. Between 2008 and 2010, 50 sensor nodes were added to measure distributed snow depth, air temperature, soil temperature, and soil moisture within the top 1 m below the surface. These sensor nodes were installed to capture the lateral differences of aspect and canopy coverage. Data are available at hourly and daily intervals by water year (1 October–30 September) in nonproprietary formats from online data repositories. 31. Modeling study of impacts on surface ozone of regional transport and emissions reductions over North China Plain in summer 2015

Abstract: Tropospheric ozone (O3) has replaced PM2.5 or PM10 as the primary pollutant in the North China Plain (NCP) during summer in recent years. A comprehensive understanding of O3 production in response to the reduction of precursor emissions over the NCP is urgently demanded for effective control policy design. In this study, the air quality modeling system RAMS-CMAQ (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System–Community Multiscale Air Quality), coupled with the ISAM (Integrated Source Apportionment Method) module is applied to investigate the O3 regional transport and source contribution features during a heavy O3 pollution episode in June 2015 over the NCP. The results show that emissions sources in Shandong and Hebei were the major contributors to O3 production in the NCP. Not only the highest local contribution of O3 mass burden but also more than 30 % contribution of O3 mass burdens in Beijing and Tianjin came from the emissions sources in these two provinces, respectively. Conversely, the urban areas and most O3-polluted regions of the NCP were mainly dominated by conditions sensitive to volatile organic compounds, while both control and NOx-sensitive conditions dominated the suburban and remote areas, respectively. Then, based on the sensitivity tests, the effects of several hypothetical scenarios of emissions control on reducing the O3 pollution were compared and discussed. The results indicated that the emissions control of industry and residential sectors was the most efficient method if the emissions reduction percentage was higher than 40 %. However, when the emissions reduction percentage dropped below 30 %, the power plant sector could make significant contributions to the decrease in O3. The control strategies should be promptly adjusted based on the emissions reduction, and the modeling system can provide valuable information for precisely choosing the emissions sector combination to achieve better efficiency.

An ultra-stable oscillator with 1 s stability (Allan deviation) at the level of 10−12 was installed on the FY-3C GNOS, and thus both zero-difference and single-difference excess phase processing methods should be feasible for FY-3C GNOS observations. In this study we focus on evaluating zero-difference processing of BDS RO data vs. single-difference processing, in order to investigate the zero-difference feasibility for this new instrument, which after its launch in September 2013 started to use BDS signals from five geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites, five inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites and four medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites. We used a 3-month set of GNOS BDS RO data (October to December 2013) for the evaluation and compared atmospheric bending angle and refractivity profiles, derived from single- and zero-difference excess phase data, against co-located profiles from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses. We also compared against co-located refractivity profiles from radiosondes. The statistical evaluation against these reference data shows that the results from single- and zero-difference processing are reasonably consistent in both bias and standard deviation, clearly demonstrating the feasibility of zero differencing for GNOS BDS RO observations. The average bias (and standard deviation) of the bending angle and refractivity profiles were found to be about 0.05 to 0.2 % (and 0.7 to 1.6 %) over the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Zero differencing was found to perform slightly better, as may be expected from its lower vulnerability to noise. The validation results indicate that GNOS can provide, on top of GPS RO profiles, accurate and precise BDS RO profiles both from single- and zero-difference processing. The GNOS observations by the series of FY-3 satellites are thus expected to provide important contributions to numerical weather prediction and global climate change analysis.

33. On the role of neutral flow in field-aligned currents

Abstract: In this brief note we explore the role of the neutral atmosphere in magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling. We analyze momentum balance in the ion rest frame to form hypotheses regarding the role of neutral momentum in the lower ionosphere during geomagnetic storms. Neutral momentum that appears in the ion rest frame is likely the result of momentum imparted to ionospheric ions by solar wind flow and the resultant magnetospheric dynamics. The resulting ion-neutral collisions lead to the existence of an electric field. Horizontal electron flow balances the momentum supplied by this electric field. We suggest a possible role played by the neutral atmosphere in generating field-aligned currents due to local auroral heating. Our physical interpretation suggests that thermospheric neutral dynamics plays a complementary role to the high-latitude field-aligned currents and electric fields resulting from magnetospheric dynamics.

Abstract: The hydrological effects of the Grain for Green project (GFGP) on the Loess Plateau have been extensively debated due to the complexity of the water system and its multiple driving factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of the hydrological cycle to the GFGP measures based in a case study of the Yanhe Basin, a typical hilly–gully area on the Loess Plateau of China. First, we analyzed the land use and land cover (LULC) changes from 1990 to 2010. Then, we evaluated the effects of LULC changes and sloping land conversion on the main hydrological components in the basin using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The results indicated that cropland exhibited a decreasing trend, declining from 40.2 % of the basin area in 1990 to 17.6 % in 2010, and that the woodland and grassland areas correspondingly increased. With the land use changes from 1990 to 2010, the water yield showed a decreasing trend which was mainly due to decrease in surface runoff. In contrast, evapotranspiration (ET) showed an increasing trend over the same period, resulting in a persistent decrease in soil water. The conversion of sloping cropland to grassland or woodland exerted negative effects on water yield and soil water. Compared with the land use condition in 2010, the negative effects were most evident where cropland with a slope ≥ 15° was converted to woodland, with decreases in surface runoff and soil water of 17.1 and 6.4 %, respectively. These results suggest that the expansive reforestation on sloping land in the loess hilly–gully region decreased water yield and increased ET, resulting in reduced soil water. The results of this study can be used to support sustainable land use planning and water resource management on the Loess Plateau in China.

Abstract: In this paper, an integrated fusion framework for joint information reconstruction and resolution enhancement is proposed. In the proposed framework, an integrated variational model based on multi-source and multi-temporal remote sensing images is constructed, which is able to simultaneously achieve resolution enhancement and joint cloud and cloud shadow removal. In addition, the ground feature changes between multi-temporal scenes are comprehensively considered. Through this integrated framework, a promising cloud and cloud shadow free fused image with both high spatial and spectral resolutions is obtained. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Abstract A measurement of the t-channel single-top-quark and single-top-antiquark production cross-sections in the lepton+jets channel is presented, using 3.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015. Events are selected by requiring one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse momentum, and two jets with high transverse momentum, exactly one of which is required to be b-tagged. Using a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the discriminant distribution of a neural network, the cross-sections are determined to be σ(tq) = 156 ± 5 (stat.) ± 27 (syst.) ± 3 (lumi.) pb for single top-quark production and σ t ¯ q = 91 ± 4 $$ \sigma \left(\overline{t}q\right)=91\pm 4 $$ (stat.) ± 18 (syst.) ± 2 (lumi.) pb for single top-antiquark production, assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV. The cross-section ratio is measured to be R t = σ t q / σ t ¯ q = 1.72 ± 0.09 $$ {R}_t=\sigma (tq)/\sigma \left(\overline{t}q\right)=1.72\pm 0.09 $$ (stat.) ± 0.18 (syst.). All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Abstract: This article presents a basic and comprehensive introduction of Chinese civil justice. It gives a complete picture of Chinese civil justice, including the brief history, the court and judge system, the outline of the procedure, and the internationalization. Through the introduction, one can find that Chinese civil procedure law is a mixture of Soviet procedural concept, Chinese local culture, and western procedural concept and rules. It is still a developing procedure and experiences a process from resisting western procedural concept to gradually accepting and learning from it. It used to be a supra-inquisitorial trial model with overwhelming focus on conciliation, but is now transforming to aparty disposition trial model with preference to conciliation under the premise of voluntariness. With the globalization of economy, the international cooperation of China, especially with the BRICS countries, will also become more and more important.

Abstract: The W boson angular distribution in events with high transverse momentum jets is measured using data collected by the ATLAS experiment from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s=8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The focus is on the contributions to W+jets processes from real W emission, which is achieved by studying events where a muon is observed close to a high transverse momentum jet. At small angular separations, these contributions are expected to be large. Various theoretical models of this process are compared to the data in terms of the absolute cross-section and the angular distributions of the muon from the leptonic W decay.

39. Land surface albedo and vegetation feedbacks enhanced the millennium drought in south-east Australia

Abstract: In this study, we have examined the ability of a regional climate model (RCM) to simulate the extended drought that occurred throughout the period of 2002 through 2007 in south-east Australia. In particular, the ability to reproduce the two drought peaks in 2002 and 2006 was investigated. Overall, the RCM was found to reproduce both the temporal and the spatial structure of the drought-related precipitation anomalies quite well, despite using climatological seasonal surface characteristics such as vegetation fraction and albedo. This result concurs with previous studies that found that about two-thirds of the precipitation decline can be attributed to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Simulation experiments that allowed the vegetation fraction and albedo to vary as observed illustrated that the intensity of the drought was underestimated by about 10 % when using climatological surface characteristics. These results suggest that in terms of drought development, capturing the feedbacks related to vegetation and albedo changes may be as important as capturing the soil moisture–precipitation feedback. In order to improve our modelling of multi-year droughts, the challenge is to capture all these related surface changes simultaneously, and provide a comprehensive description of land surface–precipitation feedback during the droughts development.

Abstract: Mobile mapping systems are becoming increasingly popular as they can build 3D models of the environment rapidly by using a laser scanner that is integrated with a navigation system. 3D mobile mapping has been widely used for applications such as 3D city modelling and mapping of the scanned environments. However, accurate mapping relies on not only the scanner’s performance but also on the quality of the navigation results (accuracy and robustness) . This paper discusses the potentials of using 3D mobile mapping systems for landscape change detection, that is traditionally carried out by terrestrial laser scanners that can be accurately geo-referenced at a static location to produce highly accurate dense point clouds. Yet compared to conventional surveying using terrestrial laser scanners, several advantages of mobile mapping systems can be identified. A large area can be monitored in a relatively short period, which enables high repeat frequency monitoring without having to set-up dedicated stations. However, current mobile mapping applications are limited by the quality of navigation results, especially in different environments. The change detection ability of mobile mapping systems is therefore significantly affected by the quality of the navigation results. This paper presents some data collected for the purpose of monitoring from a mobile platform. The datasets are analysed to address current potentials and difficulties. The change detection results are also presented based on the collected dataset. Results indicate the potentials of change detection using a mobile mapping system and suggestions to enhance quality and robustness.

41. Analyzing the effect of urbanization on flood characteristics at catchment levels

Abstract: It is increasingly recognized that the land-use change, especially urbanization has influenced hydrological attributes intensely. Flood characteristics variation could likewise increase flood risks and pose higher demand on water management. The paper aims to evaluate temporal and spatial processes of urbanization affecting flood events at catchment level. The study sites were Xiaoqinhe catchment and its sub-catchments, a part of lower Yellow river basin in northern China. Historic cities Jinan and Zibo in the area have experienced dramatic urban expansion in recent decades, about 5% growth of urban build-up area annually from 1990s to 2010s, and also pressed alarm for increasing flood disasters. In the paper, a HEC-HMS model was set up to simulate flood processes for different land-use scenarios. The possible effects of urbanization on flood characteristics were checked in study catchment and its sub-catchments.

42. Confined aquifer vulnerability induced by a pumping well in a leakage area

Abstract: Due to the pollution of shallow groundwater and the rapid development of society and economy which consume more freshwater, the exploitation of confined groundwater is steadily increasing in north China. Therefore, the rapid decline of the confined groundwater head increases the risk of confined aquifer pollution by leaky recharge from shallow aquifers. In this paper, a quantitative method for assessing confined aquifer vulnerability to contamination due to pumping has been developed. This method is based on the shallow and confined groundwater flow model and the advection and dispersion in the aquitard, including sorption. The cumulative time for the pollutant concentration at the top boundary of confined aquifer exceeding the maximum allowable level is defined as the confined aquifer vulnerability index, which can be obtained by numerically solving the solute transport equation. A hypothetical example is chosen as a case study to illustrate the whole process. The results indicate that the proposed method is a practical and reasonable assessment method of confined aquifer vulnerability.

43. Analysis of baseflow index based hydrological model in Upper Wei River basin on the Loess Plateau in China

Abstract: The baseflow is the drainage from the groundwater and soil water to the streamflow. As one important source of the streamflow, the baseflow could be the main source of the streamflow in the dry season. The Wei River, located in the semi-arid region of the Loess Plateau which is overlain by deep and loose soil, is the largest tributary of the Yellow River. According to former research, most of the streamflow in the dry season in the headwater of the Yellow River is baseflow. For the whole Yellow River basin, the baseflow is an important component of the streamflow, and accounts for about 44% of the annual runoff. Physically-based distributed hydrological models can simulate the runoff components separately, and are important tools to analyse the runoff components. Given the importance of the baseflow in the dry season for drought relief to support the ecological water requirement and irrigation, especially in the Wei River, the baseflow is analysed in this study. To investigate the baseflow in the Upper Wei River basin, a semi-distributed hydrological model based on a Representative Elementary Watershed approach (THREW) is employed to investigate the runoff generation process. To compare the results, an automatic baseflow separation method proposed by Arnold is used to separate the baseflow from the daily streamflow at Beidao hydrological station in Upper Wei River basin from 2001 to 2004. Based on the hydrological modelling and the Arnold separation method, the average annual baseflow index, i.e. the ratio of baseflow to the total runoff, is estimated as in the range of 0.30–0.36. The average intra-annual monthly baseflow index represents the seasonality of the baseflow due to the seasonality of the precipitation and evapotranspiration, and is also analysed.

Abstract: A residual-based rainfall merging scheme using geographically weighted regression (GWR) has been proposed. This method is capable of simultaneously blending various satellite rainfall data with gauge measurements and could describe the non-stationary influences of geographical and terrain factors on rainfall spatial distribution. Using this new method, an experimental study on merging daily rainfall from the Climate Prediction Center Morphing dataset (CMOROH) and gauge measurements was conducted for the Ganjiang River basin, in Southeast China. We investigated the capability of the merging scheme for daily rainfall estimation under different gauge density. Results showed that under the condition of sparse gauge density the merging rainfall scheme is remarkably superior to the interpolation using just gauge data.

45. Suppression of SlNAC1 reduces heat resistance in tomato plants

Abstract: NAC (NAM, ATAF1,2, and CUC2) transcription factors play an important role in the responses of plants to various environmental stresses. To investigate the function of SlNAC1, which was found to be a member of the ATAF subfamily in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants under heat stress conditions, transgenic tomato plants were generated using an antisense technology. After a treatment at 40 °C for 48 h, in comparison with wild-type (WT) plants, the transgenic plants were severely wilted and exhibited a lower net photosynthetic rate and a maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. Moreover, the transgenic plants displayed a higher ion leakage and malondialdehyde content and a lower proline content. The content of reactive oxygen species (superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide) were higher, and activities of ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase lower in the transgenic plants than in the WT plants. The transgenic plants also exhibited a lower accumulation of the transcripts of some heat shock protein genes (Hsp70, Hsp90, sHsp17.4, and sHsp17.6). All of these results suggest that the suppression of SlNAC1 could obviously reduce heat resistance in the tomato plants, and this indicates that SlNAC1 played an important role in the thermal tolerance of the tomato plants.

Abstract: The Kuroshio, a western boundary current in the northwestern Pacific, plays a key role in regulating ocean and climate in East Asia. The evolution of the Kuroshio and its branches has been the focus of paleoceanographic studies. In this study, we applied a multiproxy (grain size, planktonic foraminiferal species, δ18O, alkenone sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity) reconstruction from sediment core CSH1, which is located at the main axis of the Tsushima Warm Current, a branch of the Kuroshio, in the northern Okinawa Trough (OT). This study, extended the paleoceanographic record of the Kuroshio to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5.1 (∼88 ka) from the far northern site in the OT. Planktonic foraminiferal species identified from this core contain warm-water species related to the Kuroshio and cold-water species related to subarctic water mass. The relative abundances of the warm-water species are high during MIS 1 and MIS 5.1, while cold-water species are high during MIS 2. An organic biomarker proxy, alkenone SST measured from core CSH1 ranges between 21 and 25 °C, with higher values during interglacials (MIS 1, 3.3, 5.1) and interstadials and lower values during glacials and Heinrich (H)/stadial events. Sea surface salinity (SSS) and the depth of the thermocline (DOT), reconstructed based on foraminifera isotopes and faunas, indicate dominant Kuroshio responses to an abrupt climate change event recorded in Greenland ice cores and in stalagmites in East China since ∼88 ka. The CSH1 SSS appears to be mainly controlled by the local river runoff and the Kuroshio, while the DOT change seems to be closely related to the strength of the Kuroshio and the latitudinal shift of the subarctic frontal zone. Our records suggest that, during MIS 1 and MIS 5.1, while global sea level was high, the Kuroshio was dominant; while during MIS 2, MIS 3 and MIS 4, with a low sea level, stronger winter Asian Monsoon (AM) and a more southerly subarctic front played important roles in governing the hydrographic characteristics in the OT. Spectral analysis of our multiproxy hydrographic records shows a dominant precessional period at ∼24 ka. Our hydrographic records, such as SST, SSS and DOT, from a site near the modern Tsushima Warm Current show regional responses corresponding mainly to the global sea level, the Kuroshio, AM and subarctic front, factors which are consistently invoked in the interpretations of other regional records from the OT.

Based on cloud computing technology and national e-government network platform, "National Natural Resources and Geospatial Database (NRGD)" project integrated and transformed natural resources and geospatial information dispersed in various sectors and regions, established logically unified and physically dispersed fundamental database and developed national integrated information database system supporting main e-government applications. Cross-sector e-government applications and services are realized to provide long-term, stable and standardized natural resources and geospatial fundamental information products and services for national egovernment and public users.

49. Overexpression of R2R3-MYB gene leads to accumulation of anthocyanin and enhanced resistance to chilling and oxidative stress

Abstract: LeAN2 encoding an anthocyanin-associated R2R3-MYB transcription factor was isolated from tomato. The expression of LeAN2 in tomato was induced by low temperature and oxidative stress. Green fluorescent protein was fused to LeAN2 and the complex was expressed transiently in onion epidermal cells. Green fluorescence was observed only in the nucleus. Overexpression of LeAN2 under the control of the CaMV35S promoter in tobacco induced expression of several anthocyanin biosynthetic genes and the content of anthocyanin was markedly higher in transgenic tobacco compared with wild type plants. Transgenic tobaccos conferred tolerance to chilling stress by maintaining a higher chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, and maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II compared to the wild type plants. Furthermore, the transgenic plants showed lower ion leakage, a lower content of reactive oxygen species, and a higher content of non-enzymatic antioxidans under the chilling stress. They also showed an enhanced resistance to the oxidative stress induced by methyl viologen based on a decreased chlorophyll content loss, lower ion leakage, and an enhanced maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II. These results indicate that overexpression of LeAN2 resulted in an increased anthocyanin accumulation and enhanced resistance to the chilling and oxidative stresses in transgenic tobacco.

Abstract: A new nonlinear robust filter is proposed in this paper to deal with the outliers of an integrated GPS/SINS navigation system. The influence of different design parameters for H∞ cubature Kalman filter is analysed. It is found that when the design parameter is smaller, the robustness of the filter is stronger. However, the design parameter is easily out of step with the Riccati equation and the filter is easy to diverge. In this respect, the singular value decomposition algorithm is employed to replace Cholesky decomposition in the robust cubature Kalman filter. On the wider conditions for design parameter, the new filter is more robust. The testing results demonstrate that the proposed filter algorithm is more reliable and effective in dealing the data sets produced by the integrated GPS/SINS system.
