Hsp70 is a key cellular system counteracting protein misfolding and aggregation, associated with stress, ageing, and disease. Hsp70 solubilises aggregates and aids protein refolding through substrate binding and release cycles regulated by co-chaperones: J-domain proteins (JDPs) and nucleotide exchange factors (NEFs). Here, we elucidate the collaborative impact of Hsp110 NEFs and different JDP classes throughout Hsp70-dependent aggregate processing. We show that Hsp110 plays a major role at initial stages of disaggregation, determining its final efficacy. The NEF catalyses the recruitment of thick Hsp70 assemblies onto aggregate surface, which modifies aggregates into smaller species more readily processed by chaperones. Hsp70 stimulation by Hsp110 is much stronger with class B than class A JDPs and requires the auxiliary interaction between class B JDP and the Hsp70 EEVD motif. Furthermore, we demonstrate for the first time that Hsp110 disrupts the JDP-Hsp70 interaction. Such destabilisation of chaperone complexes at the aggregate surface might improve disaggregation, but also lead to the inhibition above the sub-stoichiometric Hsp110 optimum. Thus, balanced interplay between the co-chaperones and Hsp70 is critical to unlock its disaggregating potential.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of three new solid fertilisers (based on Salmag®) with innovative IDHA chelate additives (Cu, Mo and Fe) on the yield, yield (grain, straw), biometric characteristics and chemical composition (total N, Ca, Mg and Cu, Mo, and Fe) of spring wheat and soil properties in the pot experiment. The nitrogen dose in all fertilised plots was 140 mg kg−1 of soil (60% before sowing, 40% at tillering). Before sowing, uniform fertilisation with phosphorus (60 mg kg−1 of soil) and potassium (60 mg kg−1 of soil) were also applied. At the stem elongation stage, nitrogen fertilisers, especially Salmag® with Cu, promoted an increase, and Salmag® with Mo and Fe promoted a decrease in leaf greenness at other growth stages of spring wheat. All nitrogen fertilisers had a positive effect on height (especially Salmag® and Salmag® with Mo) and yield (especially Salmag® with Cu and Mo) of spring wheat grain and straw. The effect on grain yield was stronger, while Salmag® with Fe was slightly weaker than pure Salmag®. All applied nitrogen fertilisers increased total N in grain and straw and Ca and Mg in spring wheat straw. Nitrogen fertilisers enriched with micronutrients generally had a weaker effect than Salmag® on the content of total N in grain (in contrast to straw) and Ca and Mg. The addition of Cu, Mo, and especially Fe chelates increased the content of chelated elements in spring wheat, especially in straw. The pH value of the soil after harvest of spring wheat was slightly higher after the application of Salmag® and lower in the soil fertilised with Salmag® with Mo and Salmag® with Fe than in the control. Salmag® and Salmag® with Cu showed a significant increase in soil Mg and all nitrogen fertilisers (especially Salmag® with Fe) in soil Ca content after spring wheat harvest. Salmag® with Cu caused the greatest increase in soil Cu content. The new fertilisers with Mo chelate and especially with Cu chelate showed a significant effect on yield formation and quality of spring wheat.

In the context of a circular economy, special attention should be paid to the rational management of biodegradable waste. Currently, a potentially valuable waste material, rich in ingredients available to plants, is digestate, obtained as a by-product in agricultural biogas plants. The presented study aimed to determine the impact of digestate (DIG) from an agricultural biogas plant on soil reaction (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), sorption properties (SBC, HAC, CEC, BS), and chemical composition of soil. The research was based on a pot experiment in which increasing doses of liquid (LD) and solid (SD) forms of DIG were used in corn cultivation, balanced in terms of the amount of N introduced into the soil. The composition of DIG varied and depended on the LD or SD form. The LD was characterized by a lower pH value and higher EC compared to the SD form. The LD contained much less TC, fewer macroelements, and fewer trace elements. The application of LD significantly increased in the soil the content of TC, Ntot, available K, P, Fe, and Mn, and exchangeable cations K+. The SD significantly increased the content of available P, Mg, and Mn and exchangeable cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the soil. Both forms of digestate increased the total content of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, and Ni) in the soil. However, they did not pose a threat to the environment concerning their legally permissible levels.

The aim of the study was to determine the feasibility of using maize biomass for the phyto-stabilisation of iron-contaminated soils under conditions involving the application of humic acids (HAs). The biomass yield content of maize trace elements was analysed. In the absence of HAs, the first dose of Fe-stimulated plant biomass growth was compared to the absence of Fe contamination. The highest soil Fe contamination resulted in a very large reduction in maize biomass yield, with a maximum of 93%. The addition of HAs had a positive effect on plant biomass, with a maximum of 53%, and reduced the negative effect of Fe. There was an almost linear increase in maize biomass yield with increasing doses of HAs. Analogous changes were observed in dry matter content in maize. Soil treatment with Fe caused a significant increase in its content in maize biomass, with a maximum increase of three times in the series without HAs. There was also a decrease in Co, Cr and Cd content (by 17%, 21% and 44%, respectively) and an increase in Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn accumulation (by 32%, 63%, 75%, 97% and 203%, respectively). The application of HAs to the soil reduced the content of this trace element and its growth in the biomass of this plant under the influence of Fe contamination. They had a similar effect on other trace elements contained in the maize biomass. HAs contributed to a decrease in the level of most of the tested trace elements (except Ni and Pb) in the maize biomass. The reduction ranged from 11% (Cr and Mn) to 72% (Cd). The accumulation of Ni and Pb in the maize biomass was higher in the objects with HAs application than in the series without their addition. Humic acid application is a promising method for the reduction of the effects of soil Fe contamination on plants.

Combustion of woody biomass in professional bioheating plants to generate heat and reduce the dust emissions from this process results in the formation of a huge mass of woody biomass ash (WBA). Due to WBA’s rich chemical composition and the assumptions of the circular economy, this mineral material should be used for environmental purposes to recover valuable macro- and micronutrients. The basis of the research was a pot experiment designed to assess the effect of six doses of WBA (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 g pot−1) on the growth, development, yield, and chemical composition of corn. Each pot contained 9 kg of soil. Observations show that the use of increasing doses of WBA had a positive effect on the height of corn plants, increasing its yield by 7 to 10% but reducing the dry matter content by 0.47 to 1.37% and the leaf greenness index (SPAD). Moreover, WBA application (T1–T5 treatments) had a positive effect on the content of macroelements (N, K, Mg, Ca, and Na) in corn biomass. A significant increase in the content of K (54%), Mg (38%), Ca (43%), and Na (19%) was observed. However, at the same time, a significant increase in the content of heavy metals—Ni, Cd, and Pb—was observed. Different results were obtained for P, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Co, whose content in corn decreased after WBA application to soil. The obtained results indicate the possibility of using WBA in an environmentally friendly way. However, due to the great diversity of this material in terms of the content of undesirable heavy metals, it is necessary to optimize its dosage and monitor its chemical composition. Considering the growing number of bioheating plants in our country in recent years and the resulting increase in the amount of WBA produced, it is necessary to develop a rational and environmentally friendly method for managing them in the future. The results of our research may provide partial indications of such solutions.

The following research hypotheses were established in this study: the applied urea and ammonium nitrate solution with potassium thiosulfate (UAN-KTS) has a positive effect on the chemical composition of spring wheat, spring rape and maize; fertilization with nitrogen, potassium and sulfur increases their contents in the usable parts of plants; the forms of applied fertilizers reduce the antagonistic effect of nitrogen and potassium on the content of other elements in plants. Two doses of nitrogen (N 1—optimal dose of nitrogen for a plant species; N 2—25% lower dose of nitrogen) and different ratios of N:K:S elements (N:K:S—without K and S; N:K1:S1—a narrowed ratio; N:K2:S2—the optimal ratio; N:K3:S3—an expanded ratio) were applied. The experiment was carried out on two soils of different quality. The improved soil quality resulted in a significant increase in the calcium (as opposed to magnesium) content of the three crops, in the nitrogen and sulfate–sulfur (VI) content of spring wheat grain and spring rapeseed, and in the phosphorus content of spring rapeseed and maize aerial parts. Reducing the dose (N 2) had a negative effect on the nitrogen content of spring wheat and on the sulfate–sulfur (VI) content of spring rape, maize and especially spring wheat. Increasing the N:K:S ratio had a small but usually antagonistic effect on the nitrogen content of all plant species, but a synergistic one on the potassium content of spring wheat, maize and partly of spring rape, and especially on the content of sulfate–sulfur (VI) in the crops. The effect of type of soil and fertilizers with different N:K:S ratios on the content of other macronutrients was related to plant species. The new fertilizer with the N:K2:S2 ratio had the greatest effect on the content of the tested macronutrients in spring wheat, spring rape and maize. In order to confirm the obtained relationships, it seems justified to carry out field experiments and studies with other plant species.

In the cultivation of crops in recent times, in addition to taking care of the balanced supply of nutrients to plants and the protection of soil resources, it is also important to take into account the non-productive factor by implementing production systems based on balanced fertilisation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of soil kind and the application of a new fertiliser based on a urea and ammonium nitrate solution with potassium thiosulphate (UAN-KTS) on the yielding and biometric characteristics of spring wheat, spring rape, and maize to determine the optimal N:K:S ratio. An increase in the soil kind increased the weight of 1000 spring rape seeds, the yield of maize fresh matter, a reduction in the height of spring wheat and maize plants, a reduction in the yield of spring wheat grains and straw, and the yield of the fresh and dry matter of spring rape straw. A higher nitrogen dose promoted the growth of spring rape at the later growing stage and maize and had a positive effect on the yield of spring wheat grains and straw, spring rape seeds and straw, and the above-ground parts of maize. The application of potassium fertilisers caused a significant increase in the spring rape plant height, an increase in the yield of spring wheat grains and straw and spring rape seeds and straw, the above-ground parts of maize, a reduction in the plant height at the beginning of the spring wheat growing period, and a reduction in the weight of 1000 spring rape seeds (only on the soil with rich quality). The fertiliser with the N:K2:S2 ratio had a particularly favourable effect on the yielding of spring wheat. In the cultivation of maize, the same effect was most often obtained under the influence of fertiliser in the ratio of N:K1:S1 on the weaker soil fertilised at the same time as a higher dose of nitrogen (N 1) and N:K2:S2 (in other cases). In the case of spring rape, generally, fertiliser with N:K1:S1 was the strongest, although, in some objects, a higher yield was achieved under the influence of N:K2:S2. The existence of statistically confirmed correlations (expressed as the percentage of the variability observed) between the soil kind and the fertilisers applied and the yielding and biometric characteristics of the plants were observed.

An interesting feedstock for energy purposes is plant biomass due to its renewability, widespread availability and relatively low cost. One plant with a high and versatile use potential is maize. Plants used for energy production can be grown in polluted areas, e.g., with iron. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of humic acids (HAs) on the yield, calorific value and other energy parameters and chemical composition of maize biomass applied as a phytostabiliser on iron-contaminated soil. The soil was contaminated with iron at 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg kg−1. The HAs were added to the soil in the following amounts: 0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 g kg−1 of soil. Soil contamination with iron had relatively little effect on the heat of combustion and calorific value of biomass and very strongly reduced plant height (42%), dry matter yield (95%) and energy production of maize biomass (90%), the SPAD index at the fifth leaf unfolded stage (44%) (as opposed to the stem elongation stage), sodium, magnesium and phosphorus contents, and increased calcium, potassium and nitrogen contents of maize. The application of HAs to the soil had a positive and very large effect on both the height and biomass parameters studied, resulting in an increase in plant height (22%), dry matter yield (67%) and energy production from maize biomass (62%). Changes in the heat of combustion and calorific value of the biomass were minimal but positive. HAs contributed to a decrease in the value of the SPAD index during the stem elongation phase of maize and in the content of all macronutrients in maize biomass as a result of a reduction in the effect of iron on macronutrient content and to a significant increase in maize dry matter yield in plots with their application. The application of HAs appears to be an effective adjunct in the phytostabilisation of iron-contaminated soils by growing crops for energy purposes.

Because COVID-19 has been recognised as one of the most important pandemics in the history of humankind, in recent years many scientists have investigated the effect of the disease on various aspects of mental and physical human health. This article presents a literature review regarding the effect of SARS CoV-2 infection on the symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment of diabetes. It discusses the effect of infection with virus SARS-CoV-2 on the course of type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as the frequency of occurrence of the disease in patients affected by COVID-19. Moreover, it presents information on the pharmacotherapy and way of providing services by doctors during the pandemic. According to the literature, infection with virus SARS CoV-2 causes a general inflammation of the organisms and numerous metabolic and hormonal disturbances, and therefore affects the course of diabetes. It may lead not only to serious metabolic complications in the course of early diabetes, but also to the development of the disease. It was determined that infection with COVID-19 in diabetes patients (mainly type 2) increases the risk of complications (such as acute respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and death).

Introduction: The percentage of the population struggling with the problem of obesity has been steadily increasing in recent years, both among adults and children. Obesity is a chronic disease resulting from a positive energy balance, which does not tend to disappear spontaneously. The etiology of obesity is multidimensional, it is caused by genetic, environmental and behavioral factors. As a result, excessive amounts of adipose tissue are deposited in the body, which leads to an increased risk of various systemic diseases, including cancers of the digestive system. Aim of the study: This review aims to show the relationship between overweight and obesity and the increased incidence of gastrointestinal cancers. Materials and methods: An analysis of previous works present in the PubMed database was performed, using the following keywords: obesity, overweight, obesity and cancer, cancer. Results: The results of the presented publications show the presence of a positive correlation between overweight and obesity, especially abdominal and the occurrence of gastrointestinal cancers.

Introduction and aim of the study: Botulinum toxin, produced by anaerobic bacteria of the Clostridium botulinum family, is one of the most potent organic compounds known to man. Despite its toxicity, it has found widespread use in medicine. From applications in aesthetic medicine, through the treatment of various disease entities, botulinum toxin has become an extremely valuable tool in the hands of doctors. The aim of this study is to review the latest research on the use of botulinum in medicine, with an emphasis on its safety and effectiveness. Methodology: The review work is mainly based on articles searched in the Pubmed and Google Scholar databases in the years 2016-2023. The study was conducted by reviewing keywords such as "botulin", "botulin toxin", "botulin treatment", "botulin aesthetic". Current state of knowledge: Botulinum is used in the treatment of such disease entities as hyperhidrosis, cervical dystonia, migraines, neurogenic bladder, as well as in the treatment of scars and wrinkles. The use of botulinum in medicine is safe, provided that it is used by qualified specialists and in appropriate doses. An area that requires further research is the impact of long-term botulinum therapy on the antibodies produced against the toxin. Additionally, an important area for further research is patient monitoring, appropriate dose adjustment and frequency of administration, which in turn can increase the effectiveness of treatment. Summary: Botulinum toxin is an effective tool in medicine, which has many applications. However, as with any drug, it requires appropriate use and understanding of potential side effects. Further research and education are key to fully exploiting its potential and assessing the risk associated with long-term use.

Introduction and purpose: High Flow Nasal Therapy is quite new respiratory support method, although recently it became more popular – especially during COVID-19 pandemic. Physiological mechanisms as well as main applications were observed and described in several randomized controlled trias and metaanalisys. The purpose of this review is to present fundamental studies and indicate applications of this method. Brief description of the state of knowladge: Breathing mixture with a maximum flow 60l/min needs to be heated and humidified to protect the airways from dryness. Optimal humidity improves mucocilary clearance, reduces inflammation of the airways and energy expenditure, especially in acute respiratory failure. High flow nasal therapy may imrpove the mechanics of breathing also by washout of nasopharyngeal dead space and generating positive airway pressure during exhalation, which keeps airways open and prevents the alveoli from collapsing. High flow therapy can be use in many different applications but at Intensive Care Unit the most important are: acute hypoxemia, during extubation or rest breaks from NIV. It is important to monitor the patient and predict the need for intubation on time. There are physiological states that we shoud focus on: respiratory rate, dyspnea or work of breathing, but it is good to know ROX index which can be helpful to assess the success of the therapy. Summary (conlcusions): High flow nasal therapy is a simple and safety respiratory support method that can be applicable at Intensive Care Units. It can lower the intubation numbers and help during NIV rest breaks. High flow nasal therapy is a very promising method for all patients with respiratory failure but it is important to monitor the patient and not delay the intubation.

Introduction and objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition characterized by progressive damage to the joint cartilage and bone. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has gained increasing interest as a potential therapeutic approach for relieving symptoms and improving joint function. The aim of this article is to present the current knowledge regarding the PRP preparation method, mechanisms of action, and treatment outcomes in OA based on scientific literature and recent research. Materials and methods: A review of scientific literature available on Google Scholar, PubMed, and Via Medica journal database was conducted using relevant keywords. State of knowledge: Platelet-rich plasma is obtained from the patient's own blood using differential centrifugation method, resulting in a concentration of platelets (PLT) that is 300-700% higher compared to the baseline. PLTs release various biologically active substances, including growth factors, which stimulate tissue repair and regeneration processes. Numerous studies have shown that PRP administration in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip joints leads to pain reduction and improved joint function. The therapeutic effect yields long-lasting results, lasting up to 12 months after the completion of the treatment. Conclusions: The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of osteoarthritis presents a promising alternative to conventional therapies. However, further research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of PRP on a larger sample size and assess the long-term effects of this therapy. Knowledge regarding dosage, treatment protocols, and the duration of therapy remains limited.

Modafinil is used to treat narcolepsy with cataplexy and is also being extensively studied to find new therapeutic uses. In recent years, there have been reports suggesting the potential benefits of modafinil in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses such as depression and bipolar depression. In the case of depression, modafinil can be used as an adjuvant or as monotherapy in patients who do not respond sufficiently to antidepressants. Studies have shown that modafinil improves symptoms of depression, reduces fatigue and improves cognitive function. There are also reports of a beneficial effect of modafinil in the treatment of seasonal depression. For bipolar depression, modafinil can be used as an adjunct therapy during the depressive phase, particularly in patients experiencing slowness, lethargy and loss of pleasure. Studies suggest that modafinil may improve depressive symptoms without inducing manic episodes. There are also data indicating modafinil's potential efficacy in treating negative symptoms and improving cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia. In conclusion, modafinil appears to be a promising drug in aiding the treatment of various psychiatric illnesses.

Depression, a widespread psychological malady affecting countless individuals across the globe, often proves stubborn against existing treatment modalities, necessitating exploration into new options. The spotlight has increasingly been cast on psilocybin, thanks to its promising therapeutic capacities for a spectrum of mental health disorders, notably including depression. This article dissects the operational mechanisms of psilocybin, referencing germane clinical trials, and weighing the prospective risks and rewards related to its usage. Pooled findings from an array of clinical studies hint at the possibility of psilocybin furnishing swift and lasting advantages for managing depression and similar disorders. Trial participants who underwent a combined regimen of psilocybin and psychotherapy recorded enduring alleviation in their anxiety and depressive symptoms. Psilocybin has been observed to trigger modifications in neural activity, predominantly in the brain's default mode network (DMN) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). These alterations have been correlated with a decrease in self-oriented cognitive processes, an uptick in positive emotional states, and the facilitation of neuroplasticity. When compared with standard antidepressant medications, the symptomatic improvements seen with psilocybin were largely equivalent. Preclinical investigations have also underlined psilocybin's potential in augmenting neural plasticity and neurogenesis, thus hinting at its possible utility in the fields of neurosurgery and neurooncology.

Zeolites, a group of minerals with unique properties, have been known for more than 250 years. However, it was the development of methods for hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites and their large-scale industrial applications (oil processing, agriculture, production of detergents and building materials, water treatment processes, etc.) that made them one of the most important materials of the 20th century, with great practical and research significance. The orderly, homogeneous crystalline and porous structure of zeolites, their susceptibility to various modifications, and their useful physicochemical properties contribute to the continuous expansion of their practical applications in both large-volume processes (ion exchange, adsorption, separation of mixture components, catalysis) and specialized ones (sensors). The following review of the knowledge available in the literature on zeolites aims to present the most important information on the properties, synthesis methods, and selected applications of this group of aluminosilicates. Special attention is given to the use of zeolites in agriculture and environmental protection.

Soil contaminated with petroleum substances is classified as hazardous, i.e., particularly harmful to the proper functioning of environmental ecosystems. It is therefore necessary to take measures to restore the homeostasis and ecological potential of degraded areas. The study aim was to determine the impact of bentonite, compost, and calcium oxide (CaO) on trace element content in the maize grown on diesel oil (DO)-contaminated soil. Increasing doses of the petroleum substance increased the accumulation of chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and cadmium (Cd) in maize. The largest increases were found for Cu (by 76%), Co (by 73%), and Pb (by 42%). All soil amendments proved useful for in situ stabilization of anthropogenically transformed soils. Bentonite reduced Cr (by 94%), Cu (by 84%), and Mn content (by 53%), while compost reduced the contents of Cu (by 75%), Mn (by 44%), and iron (Fe—by 29%) in maize. CaO significantly reduced the levels of Cr (by 94%), Cu (by 84%), Ni (by 66%), Mn (by 32%), Co (by 72%), zinc (Zn—by 30%), and Cd (by 22%) in maize. The effects of compost and bentonite on maize chemical composition were smaller than that achieved with CaO, and the direction of changes in elements content depended on the DO dose and the element type.

This research concerned the possibilities of the natural management of ash, which is a waste product obtained in the process of burning wood chips in a bio-heating plant. The basis of the research was a pot experiment, which was carried out in a greenhouse of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. This experiment dealt with the influence of increasing doses of wood biomass ash added to soil on selected soil properties. The soil used for the pot experiment was taken from the arable layer (0–25 cm) of the soil. It was characterized by acidic reaction, low salinity, and an average content of total carbon (TC). The test plant was corn. Soil analysis after plant harvest showed an increase in pH and a significant improvement of soil sorption properties, without causing an excessive increase in soil salinity. In addition, a significant increase in the content of available K, P, and Mg was observed, which at the highest dose of WBA reached: 121.9; 109.3, and 41.33 mg kg−1 of soil, respectively. The content of trace metals: iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), chrome (Cr), and nickel (Ni) in the soil was quite varied but did not exceed the permissible values for agricultural soils. The content of available forms of these trace metals at the highest dose of WBA was, respectively, 1004, 129.9, 8.70, 2.08, 5.54, 0.195, 1.47, 0.97, and 1.92 kg−1 of soil. The results confirmed the significant fertilizing potential of wood biomass ash.

Application of mineral fertilisers can entail an increase in trace element content in the soil. In consequence, their elevated uptake by plants and transfer to further trophic chain links may occur. The aim of the research reported here was to determine the usefulness of the tested organic materials, such as humic acids, for reduction of the content of trace elements in two soils fertilised with excessive doses of nitrogen fertilisers. Soil type had a considerable effect on soil trace element content. The content of most trace elements (cadmium, lead, chromium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and iron) was higher in loamy sand than in sand. Among the tested fertilisers, a higher content of most soil trace elements was found after the application of ammonium nitrate. Urea fertilisation led to a decrease in the content of cadmium, chromium, copper, and zinc in both soils; cobalt, manganese, and nickel in sand; and an increase in concentration of cobalt and manganese in loamy sand, relative to the subjects fertilised with ammonium nitrate. Urea ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) decreased the content of chromium, cadmium, copper, nickel, and zinc in both soils; lead in the sand; and cobalt in the loamy sand, while raising the content of lead in the loamy sand, relative to the subjects fertilised with ammonium nitrate. The impact of urea and UAN on the remaining trace element content in the soils was comparable to that effected by ammonium nitrate. The effect of humic acids on trace element content in the soil tended to be beneficial, as they reduced the soil concentrations of these elements compared to the control subject (without their application). However, it should be emphasised that their effect depended on nitrogen fertiliser form and soil type. Humic acids can effectively reduce the uptake of trace elements by some plant species.

The study was conducted to determine the influence of fluorine soil contamination (100, 200 and 300 mg kg−1 of soil) on the levels of exogenous amino acids (ExAAs) and endogenous amino acids (EnAAs) in the above-ground parts of winter oilseed rape and spring triticale grain. Fluorine soil contamination had a much more pronounced influence on the content of the tested amino acids in spring triticale grain than in the above-ground parts of winter oilseed rape. Soil contamination with fluorine had the greatest influence on leucine (Leu), arginine (Arg) and lysine (Lys), alanine (Ala), glycine (Gly) and glutamic acid (Glu), increasing their content, and on tyrosine (Tyr), methionine (Met) and aspartic acid (Asp), decreasing their concentration in the winter oilseed rape above-ground parts. Under the influence of fluorine soil contamination, an increase in the content of Arg, phenylalanine (Phe), histidine (His), Leu, Tyr, Gly, serine (Ser), Asp and especially, proline (Pro) and Glu, and a decrease in the level of Met and cysteine (Cys) in spring triticale grain have been confirmed. The highest fluorine contamination (300 mg kg−1 of soil) had the most favourable influence on the total amino acid content in the spring triticale. The lowest fluorine dose (100 mg kg−1 of soil) had the same effect in winter oilseed rape. Spring triticale protein had a higher nutritive value than that of winter oilseed rape. Fluorine soil contamination caused a gradual increase in the nutritive value of protein in spring triticale grain (in contrast to rape).

The green economy is a form of economic progress. It promotes environmentally sustainable, low-carbon, and inclusive development. It ensures environmental sustainability and preserves the conditions for social progress. The current model of resource management is not sustainable and puts pressure on the environment. The proposed steps toward a green economy are intended to benefit both the environment, the economy, and society. The aim of the study was to assess the spatial differentiation of the relationship between the green economy and the zero waste concept of Eastern Poland’s municipalities. The assessment was performed using a synthetic measure. The choice of variables was determined by the availability of data in the Bank of Local Data of the Central Statistical Office (BDL GUS) for the years 2010–2020 in spatial terms (709) municipalities of Eastern Poland. The synthetic measure of green economy ranged from 0.28 to 0.56 in 2010 and from 0.28 to 0.59 in 2020; and for the waste management measure, from 0.19 to 0.55 in 2010 and 0.32 to 0.53 in 2020. Spatially, the essence of the green economy or zero waste stems from the desire to reduce the burden on the environment by creating attractive conditions for living and business activities. The development of the green economy is to shape the aspect of the environment, while ensuring economic security and quality of life.

This article presents the results of a study on the effect of fluorine pollution of soil, including soil amendments, on the concentration of sodium and sulphur in six species of crops. The experiment consisted of six pot trials performed in a greenhouse. Two factors were taken into consideration: (I) Increasing doses of fluorine (0, 20, 40, and 60 mg F kg−1 of soil for narrow-leaf lupine and 0, 100, 200, and 300 mg F kg−1 of soil for yellow lupine, winter oilseed rape, spring triticale, black radish, and phacelia) and (II) neutralizing substances (lime–1 HAC, charcoal and loam–3% relative to the soil mass). The highest sodium content was in t roots of winter oilseed rape, and the lowest was in the grain of spring triticale. Large differences were detected in the Na content between the analyzed organs of phacelia. The roots of this plant contained 16-fold more sodium than aerial parts. The highest average content of sulphur was in yellow lupine aerial parts, and the lowest was in spring triticale aerial biomass. The increasingly severe soil pollution with fluorine, in most cases, led to a decline in the sodium and sulphur content in the analyzed crops. The highest degree of soil contamination with fluorine had the strongest negative effect in this regard. The content of the analyzed macronutrients concerned the species and organs of a crop, the dose of the tested xenobiotic, and the substance applied to soil for the inactivation of fluorine. A decrease in the sodium content in most of the tested crops could be attributed to the fact that fluorine ‘reacts’, i.e., binds sodium into compounds that are hardly soluble in water, thereby limiting sodium phytovailability.

W literaturze przedmiotu od lat toczy się dyskusja na temat zasadności przyznawania jednostkom samorządu terytorialnego (JST) udziałów w podatkach centralnych jako źródła dochodu i zaliczania ich do dochodów własnych tych jednostek. Mimo że władze samorządowe są zwolennikami tego typu źródeł dochodów, dostrzegają problem w zasadach ich podziału. W przypadku polskiego podatku dochodowego od osób fizycznych (PIT) środki przyznawane są jednostkom według miejsca zamieszkania podatników, co sprawia, że wiele osób korzystających z lokalnych dóbr i usług publicznych jednej jednostki, płaci podatek dochodowy przydzielany innej jednostce. Dotyczy to zwłaszcza dużych miast. W artykule scharakteryzowano udział w PIT jako źródło dochodów gmin w Polsce oraz oszacowano wielkość środków, jakie tracą gminy na skutek przyjętego sposobu podziału tych dochodów pomiędzy jednostkami. Podmiotem badań były miasta wojewódzkie, a ich zakres czasowy obejmował lata 2016 i 2011. Dane wykorzystane do oszacowania wielkości utraconych potencjalnych dochodów miast pochodzą z zasobów Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego oraz Ministerstwa Finansów. Dokonane szacunki potwierdzają, że utracone potencjalne dochody z analizowanego źródła miałyby dość istotne znaczenie fiskalne dla miast wojewódzkich. Stanowiłyby one nieco ponad 3% dochodów własnych i blisko 8% dochodów z tytułu udziału w PIT.

Abstract The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has performed the first measurement at $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ s=13TeV of the $$\rho $$ ρ parameter, the real to imaginary ratio of the nuclear elastic scattering amplitude at $$t=0$$ t=0 , obtaining the following results: $$\rho = 0.09 \pm 0.01$$ ρ=0.09±0.01 and $$\rho = 0.10 \pm 0.01$$ ρ=0.10±0.01 , depending on different physics assumptions and mathematical modelling. The unprecedented precision of the $$\rho $$ ρ measurement, combined with the TOTEM total cross-section measurements in an energy range larger than $$10\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ 10TeV (from 2.76 to $$13\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ 13TeV ), has implied the exclusion of all the models classified and published by COMPETE. The $$\rho $$ ρ results obtained by TOTEM are compatible with the predictions, from other theoretical models both in the Regge-like framework and in the QCD framework, of a crossing-odd colourless 3-gluon compound state exchange in the t-channel of the proton–proton elastic scattering. On the contrary, if shown that the crossing-odd 3-gluon compound state t-channel exchange is not of importance for the description of elastic scattering, the $$\rho $$ ρ value determined by TOTEM would represent a first evidence of a slowing down of the total cross-section growth at higher energies. The very low-|t| reach allowed also to determine the absolute normalisation using the Coulomb amplitude for the first time at the LHC and obtain a new total proton–proton cross-section measurement $$\sigma _{\mathrm{tot}} = (110.3 \pm 3.5)\,\mathrm{mb}$$ σtot=(110.3±3.5)mb , completely independent from the previous TOTEM determination. Combining the two TOTEM results yields $$\sigma _{\mathrm{tot}} = (110.5 \pm 2.4)\,\mathrm{mb}$$ σtot=(110.5±2.4)mb .

Abstract The TOTEM collaboration has measured the proton–proton total cross section at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\hbox {TeV}$$ s=13TeV with a luminosity-independent method. Using dedicated $$\beta ^{*}=90~\hbox {m}$$ β∗=90m beam optics, the Roman Pots were inserted very close to the beam. The inelastic scattering rate has been measured by the T1 and T2 telescopes during the same LHC fill. After applying the optical theorem the total proton–proton cross section is $$\sigma _\mathrm{tot}=(110.6~\pm ~3.4$$ σtot=(110.6±3.4 ) mb, well in agreement with the extrapolation from lower energies. This method also allows one to derive the luminosity-independent elastic and inelastic cross sections: $$\sigma _\mathrm{el}=(31.0~\pm ~1.7)~\hbox {mb}$$ σel=(31.0±1.7)mb and $$\sigma _\mathrm{inel}=(79.5~\pm ~1.8)~\hbox {mb}$$ σinel=(79.5±1.8)mb .

Among the large group of xenobiotics released into the environment, petroleum derivatives are particularly dangerous, especially given continuing industrial development and the rising demand for fuel. As increasing amounts of fly ash and sewage sludge are released, it becomes necessary to explore new methods of reusing these types of waste as reclamation agents or nutrient sources. The present study examined how soil contamination with Eco-Diesel oil (0; 10; 20 cm3 kg−1 soil) affected the trace-element content in the aerial parts of maize. Coal and sludge ashes were used as reclamation agents. Our study revealed that diesel oil strongly affected the trace-element content in the aerial parts of maize. In the non-amended group, Eco-Diesel oil contamination led to higher accumulation of the trace elements in maize (with the exception of Pb and Ni), with Cu and Mn content increasing the most. The ashes incorporated into the soil performed inconsistently as a reclamation agent. Overall, the amendment reduced Mn and Fe in the aerial parts of maize while increasing average Cd and Cu levels. No significant effect was noted for the other elements.

This study has been carried out in order to determine the effect of increasingly intensive fertilization with potassium, applied in combination with nitrogen, on the content of trace elements in soil after the harvest of maize (Zea mays L.). The soil content of trace elements depended on the fertilization with potassium and nitrogen. Potassium fertilization had a stronger effect on the content of trace elements in the pots fertilized with the lower nitrogen dose (130 mg N kg−1 of soil). The increasing doses of potassium led to a higher soil content of zinc (Zn), and especially of nickel (Ni). The impact of potassium fertilization on the content of the remaining trace elements in the soil was less unambiguous, and depended on the dose of potassium and nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization resulted in a higher soil content of manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd), as well as a decreased soil content of lead (Pb). It needs to be underlined that changes in the soil content of Ni, Cd, and Pb, effected by nitrogen fertilization, were larger than in the cases of the other trace elements. The influence of potassium and nitrogen fertilization did not result in exceeding the current threshold amounts of trace elements set for agriculturally used soil. An increase in the contents of some trace elements in soil is beneficial from an agricultural point of view. Some of these elements are necessary for the correct growth and development of arable plants.

Abstract The process pp → pℓ + ℓ −p(*), with ℓ + ℓ − a muon or an electron pair produced at midrapidity with mass larger than 110 GeV, has been observed for the first time at the LHC in pp collisions at s=13 $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV. One of the two scattered protons is measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (CT-PPS), which operated for the first time in 2016. The second proton either remains intact or is excited and then dissociates into a low-mass state p*, which is undetected. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb−1 collected during standard, high-luminosity LHC operation. A total of 12 μ + μ − and 8 e+e− pairs with m(ℓ + ℓ −) > 110 GeV, and matching forward proton kinematics, are observed, with expected backgrounds of 1.49 ± 0.07 (stat) ± 0.53 (syst) and 2.36 ± 0.09 (stat) ± 0.47 (syst), respectively. This corresponds to an excess of more than five standard deviations over the expected background. The present result constitutes the first observation of proton-tagged γγ collisions at the electroweak scale. This measurement also demonstrates that CT-PPS performs according to the design specifications.

Pollution of the natural environment with fluorine compounds makes the continuous monitoring of the content of this element necessary, not only in the air, water and soil, but also in food. A high level of fluorine contamination of soils can affect quality of the obtained yields, affecting the amino acid composition of protein. It often becomes a cause of reducing nutrition and feed value of agricultural yields. In the undertaken studies, the influence of fluorine application to the soil on the amino acid content in proteins accumulated in the above-ground parts (aerial) of Zea mays L. and Lupinus luteus L. was studied. The lowest and medium doses of fluorine had a significant positive effect on the content of exogenous and endogenous amino acids in the protein of the aerial mass of maize, for which the increase of sum of all amino acids was 7% and 8%, respectively, in relation to controls. The above-ground parts of yellow lupine were characterised by a much higher content of the tested amino acids than maize. The subsequent influence of soil contamination with fluorine on the amino acid content in yellow lupine did not have the same effect as in the main plant, and the influence of fluorine was somewhat limited. With respect to yellow lupine, it was demonstrated that the lowest fluorine dose (100 mg F kg−1 of soil), did not have a beneficial influence on the sum of all amino acids. The medium and highest doses of fluorine depressed in a small degree the content of the sum of these compounds in the dry mass of yellow lupine.

The study has been undertaken in order to determine the influence of different substances (manure, clay, charcoal, zeolite and calcium oxide) on soil pH, hydrolytic acidity, total exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity, the base saturation of soil contaminated with cobalt (0, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 mg·kg−1 of soil). The analysed properties of soil proved to be dependent on the cobalt contamination and the kind of substances. In the series without substances soil contamination with the highest doses of cobalt raised the soil’s hydrolytic acidity but depressed its pH, total exchangeable bases and base saturation. Among the substances applied to soil in order to neutralize the effect of contamination with cobalt, calcium oxide had the strongest influence on the soil’s properties. In the series with calcium oxide application the hydrolytic acidity was decreased and other soil properties were increased. Manure addition to soil had positive but weaker effect on analysed soil properties.

The research aimed to determine the influence of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in doses of 0 (control), 25, 50, 100 and 150 mg Cr.kg−1 of soil as well as compost, zeolite and CaO additives on the content of heavy metals in the spring oilseed rape (Brassica napus var. oleifera) and yellow lupine (Lupinus luteus L.). The contents of heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu) in plants, were determined using the method of spectrophotometry. All of the investigated element contents in the tested plants differed significantly in the case of applying amendments to the soil, as well as increasing concentrations of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). In the series without additives in soils containing Cr(III) and Cr(VI), rapeseed was characterized by a higher average content of Cr than yellow lupine. Compost most noticeably limited the negative effect of chromium. Cr(VI) modified the contents of trace elements in the tested plants more significantly than Cr(III).

This research was conducted to study the impact of potassium and nitrogen fertilizers on the trace element content of maize (Zea mays L.). Higher doses of potassium fertilizer led to a linear increase in cadmium, lead, nickel, zinc, and manganese content, and to lower Fe:Zn and Fe:Mn ratios. Moreover, cobalt level increased in maize upon the lower doses and decreased upon the higher doses of potassium. The impact of potassium fertilizer on the levels of other elements (iron and chromium) in maize was determined by the fertilizer dose and, in particular, by the supply of additional nitrogen. Potassium fertilization led to a higher bioconcentration (BCFactor) of most of the trace elements in the aerial parts of maize. Nitrogen fertilization led to increased contents of manganese and iron, increased Fe:Zn and Fe:Mn ratios, and decreased contents of cadmium, lead, nickel, and cobalt in maize. Compared with potassium, nitrogen fertilization produced less consistent changes in bioconcentration factors for trace elements in the aerial parts of maize.
