Classical homogeneous nucleation theory is extended to nonisothermal conditions through simultaneous cluster mass and energy balances. The transient nucleation of water vapor following a sudden increase in saturation ratio is studied by numerically solving the coupled mass and energy balance equations. The ultimate steady state nucleation rate, considering nonisothermal effects, is found to be lower than the corresponding isothermal rate, with the discrepancy increasing as the pressure of the background gas decreases. After the decay of the initial temperature transients, subcritical clusters in the vicinity of the critical cluster are found to have temperatures elevated with respect to that of the background gas. The efficient exchange of gases between roots and their environment is one of the biggest challenges in bioreactor design for transformed root cultures. Gas-phase reactors can alleviate this problem as well as provide a new tool for studying the biological response of roots and other differentiated tissues to changes in the gas phase composition. In our comparison of liquid- and gas-phase reactors, roots grown in liquid (shake flasks or bubble column reactors) are shown to be under hypoxic stress. Roots grown in a gas-phase reactor (nutrient mist), while not hypoxic, produced 50% less biomass. These results suggest that the response of the tissues to gas phase composition are complex and need further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have recently gained significant attention in various fields, including chemical and biomedical applications, due to their exceptional properties. However, separating MNPs from solution via magnetophoresis is challenging when MNPs are smaller than 50 nm as Brownian forces become on the order of the magnetic forces. In this study, we successfully separated small MNPs (5-30 nm) by utilizing high magnetic fields and gradients generated by economical permanent magnets. In situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to investigate the time-dependent concentration changes in the ferrofluid, and the results validated that only the 30 nm particles experienced particle aggregation or agglomeration, indicating that dipole-dipole interactions did not play a discernable role in the separation process for particles smaller than ∼15 nm. However, numerical simulations have provided further validation that in the absence of particle-particle interactions, even MNPs with diameters less than 15 nm exhibited magnetophoresis that effectively counteracted the effects of Brownian motion.

We follow the nucleation of n-alcohols, n-propanol through n-pentanol, in two sets of supersonic nozzles having differing linear expansion rates. Combining the data from static pressure trace measurements with small-angle X-ray scattering we report the experimental nucleation rates and critical cluster sizes. For n-propanol, position resolved measurements clearly confirm that coagulation of the 2-10 nm size (radius) droplets occurs on the time scale of the experiment but that the effect of coagulation on the results is minimal. Under the conditions of the current experiments, our results suggest that alcohols have critical clusters that range from the dimer (n-pentanol) to the hexamer (n-propanol). We then compare the experimental results with classical nucleation theory (CNT), the Girshick-Chiu variant of CNT (GC), and the mean field kinetic nucleation theory (MKNT). Both CNT and MKNT underestimate the nucleation rates by up to 5 and 7 orders of magnitude, respectively, while GC theory predicts rates within 2 orders of magnitude. Correspondingly, the critical cluster size for all alcohols is overpredicted by factors of 2-9 with agreement improving with increasing chain length. An interesting byproduct of our experiments is that we find that the coagulation rate is enhanced by a factor of 3 over the value one would calculate for the free molecule regime.

We study the internal structure of nanometer-sized D2O-nonane aerosol droplets formed in supersonic nozzle expansions using a variety of experimental techniques including small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). By fitting the SAXS spectra to a wide range of droplet structure models, we find that the experimental results are inconsistent with mixed droplets that form aqueous core-organic shell structures, but are quite consistent with spherically asymmetric lens-on-sphere structures. The structure that agrees best with the SAXS data and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy measurements is that of a nonane lens on a sphere of D2O with a contact angle in the range of 40°-120°.

We follow the vapor-liquid phase transition of N(2) in a cryogenic supersonic nozzle apparatus using static pressure measurements. Under our operating conditions, condensation always occurs well below the triple point. Mean field kinetic nucleation theory (MKNT) does a better job of predicting the conditions corresponding to the estimated maximum nucleation rates, J(max) = 10(17±1) cm(-3) s(-1), than two variants of classical nucleation theory. Combining the current results with the nucleation pulse chamber measurements of Iland et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 130, 114508-1 (2009)], we use nucleation theorems to estimate the critical cluster properties. Both the theories overestimate the size of the critical cluster, but MKNT does a good job of estimating the excess internal energy of the clusters.

We have measured pressures p and temperatures T corresponding to the maximum nucleation rate of argon in a cryogenic supersonic nozzle apparatus where the estimated nucleation rates are J=10(17+/-1) cm(-3) s(-1). As T increases from 34 to 53 K, p increases from 0.47 to 8 kPa. Under these conditions, classical nucleation theory predicts nucleation rates of 11-13 orders of magnitude lower than the observed rates while mean field kinetic nucleation theory predicts the observed rates within 1 order of magnitude. The current data set appears consistent with the measurements of Iland et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 154506 (2007)] in the cryogenic nucleation pulse chamber. Combining the two data sets suggests that classical nucleation theory fails because it overestimates both the critical cluster size and the excess internal energy of the critical clusters.

To better characterize the development and growth of hairy roots in a mist-fed root bed, a single root aerosol reactor was developed. Growth kinetics studies were conducted on hairy roots of Artemisia annua as a function of the mist cycle, carrier gas, and nutrient compositions. Sustained rapid growth was only observed when conditioned medium was fed to the roots. The presence of 1% CO(2) in the carrier gas did not enhance the growth kinetics but it did prevent necrosis of the tissue at the highest mist cycle., (Copyright 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.)
