Stereotype threat ,Psychology ,Social psychology - Abstract
According to stereotype threat theory, the possibility of confirming a negative group stereotype evokes feelings of threat, leading people to underperform in domains where they are stereotyped as lacking ability. This theory has immense theoretical and practical implications. However, many studies supporting it include small samples and varying operational definitions of “stereotype threat”. We address the first challenge by leveraging a network of psychology labs to recruit a large Black student sample (Nanticipated = 2700) from multiple US sites (Nanticipated = 27). We address the second challenge by identifying three threat-increasing and three threat-decreasing procedures that could plausibly affect performance and use an adaptive Bayesian design to determine which operationalization yields the strongest evidence for underperformance. This project should advance our knowledge of a scientifically and socially important topic: the conditions under which stereotype threat affects performance among current Black students in the United States.

Plasmas 18 056120) and ASDEX Upgrade (Dunne et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 59 14017). This so-called relative shift has an impact on the pedestal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability and hence on the pedestal height (Osborne et al 2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 063018). The present work studies the effect of the relative shift on pedestal stability of JET ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) baseline low triangularity (δ) unseeded plasmas, and similar JET-C discharges. As shown in this paper, the increase of the pedestal relative shift is correlated with the reduction of the normalized pressure gradient, therefore playing a strong role in pedestal stability. Furthermore, JET-ILW tends to have a larger relative shift compared to JET carbon wall (JET-C), suggesting a possible role of the plasma facing materials in affecting the density profile location. Experimental results are then compared with stability analysis performed in terms of the peeling-ballooning model and with pedestal predictive model EUROPED (Saarelma et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion). Stability analysis is consistent with the experimental findings, showing an improvement of the pedestal stability, when the relative shift is reduced. This has been ascribed mainly to the increase of the edge bootstrap current, and to minor effects related to the increase of the pedestal pressure gradient and narrowing of the pedestal pressure width. Pedestal predictive model EUROPED shows a qualitative agreement with experiment, especially for low values of the relative shift. EURATOM 633053 Swedish Energy Agency 40146-1

The dependence of plasma transport and confinement on the main hydrogenic ion isotope mass is of fundamental importance for understanding turbulent transport and, therefore, for accurate extrapolations of confinement from present tokamak experiments, which typically use a single hydrogen isotope, to burning plasmas such as ITER, which will operate in deuterium-tritium mixtures. Knowledge of the dependence of plasma properties and edge transport barrier formation on main ion species is critical in view of the initial, low-activation phase of ITER operations in hydrogen or helium and of its implications on the subsequent operation in deuterium-tritium. The favourable scaling of global energy confinement time with isotope mass, which has been observed in many tokamak experiments, remains largely unexplained theoretically. Moreover, the mass scaling observed in experiments varies depending on the plasma edge conditions. In preparation for upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak with the ITER-like Be/W Wall (JET-ILW), a thorough experimental investigation of isotope effects in hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas is being carried out, in order to provide stringent tests of plasma energy, particle and momentum transport models. Recent hydrogen and deuterium isotope experiments in JET-ILW on L-H power threshold, L-mode and H-mode confinement are reviewed and discussed in the context of past and more recent isotope experiments in tokamak plasmas, highlighting common elements as well as contrasting observations that have been reported. The experimental findings are discussed in the context of fundamental aspects of plasma transport models.

Erosion of plasma-facing materials and successive transport and redeposition of eroded material are crucial processes determining the lifetime of plasma-facing components and the trapped tritium inventory in redeposited material layers. Erosion and deposition in the JET divertor were studied during the second JET ITER-like wall campaign ILW-2 in 2013-2014 by using a poloidal row of specially prepared divertor marker tiles including the tungsten bulk tile 5. The marker tiles were analyzed using elastic backscattering with 3-4.5 MeV incident protons and nuclear reaction analysis using 0.8-4.5 MeV 3He ions before and after the campaign. The erosion/deposition pattern observed during ILW-2 is qualitatively comparable to the first campaign ILW-1 in 2011-2012: deposits consist mainly of beryllium with 5-20 at.% of carbon and oxygen and small amounts of Ni and W. The highest deposition with deposited layer thicknesses up to 30 μm per campaign is still observed on the upper and horizontal parts of the inner divertor. Outer divertor tiles 5, 6, 7 and 8 are net W erosion areas. The observed D inventory is roughly comparable to the inventory observed during ILW-1. The results obtained during ILW-2 therefore confirm the positive results observed in ILW-1 with respect to reduced material deposition and hydrogen isotopes retention in the divertor.

Post mortem analyses of JET ITER-Like-Wall tiles and passive diagnostics have been completed after each of the first two campaigns (ILW-1 and ILW-2). They show that the global fuel inventory is still dominated by co-deposition; hence plasma parameters and sputtering processes affecting material migration influence the distribution of retained fuel. In particular, differences between results from the two campaigns may be attributed to a greater proportion of pulses run with strike points in the divertor corners, and having about 300 discharges in hydrogen at the end of ILW-2. Recessed and remote areas can contribute to fuel retention due to the larger areas involved, e.g. recessed main chamber walls, gaps in castellated Be main chamber tiles and material migration to remote divertor areas. The fuel retention and material migration due to the bulk W Tile 5 during ILW-1 are presented. Overall these tiles account for only a small percentage of the global accountancy for ILW-1.

© 2017 Technical University of Denmark. We demonstrate the measurement of a 2D MeV-range ion velocity distribution function by velocity-space tomography at JET. Deuterium ions were accelerated into the MeV-range by third harmonic ion cyclotron resonance heating. We made measurements with three neutron emission spectrometers and a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer detecting the γ-rays released in two reactions. The tomographic inversion based on these five spectra is in excellent agreement with numerical simulations with the ASCOT-RFOF and the SPOT-RFOF codes. The length of the measured fast-ion tail corroborates the prediction that very few particles are accelerated above 2 MeV due to the weak wave-particle interaction at higher energies.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES (Bio-Energy - Production of other biomass-derived fuels (incl. Production from wastes)) ,Bioenergy - Abstract
This report is an addition to the original RELB scope. It’s aim is to provide an indication of the land potentially available for future bioenergy crop cultivation. This report identifies 1.0-1.8 Mha of land potentially available for conversion to bioenergy, of which the two largest contributors are utilising the area of surplus arable crops (314,000-494,000 ha) and improved utilisation of grassland (350,000-700,000 ha).The range in values represents the uncertainty around figures, with the lower value representing a more conservative view of the potential area that could become available, whilst the higher area represents the potential area available for conversion if the market drivers are sufficient to convert all identified available land to bioenergy production. The report categorises potential areas based on whether they could be made available in the short, medium or longterm

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES (Bio-Energy - Production of other biomass-derived fuels (incl. Production from wastes)) ,Bioenergy - Abstract
ETI analysis suggests that the UK needs to plant 30 kha/yr of bioenergy crops and Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) until the mid-2050’s to deliver the required level of feedstock to meet the UK’s 2050 greenhouse gas targets cost-effectively. Of the area of bioenergy crops planted, this study assumes that 50% of the area will be SRF, 25% SRC and 25% Miscanthus. The significant increase in bioenergy crop area planted will require an increase in the number of people employed in the bioenergy crop sector from current levels, as well as an increase in the supply chain (market for end products, machinery available for planting/harvesting etc.) to support this increased area. This work focused on identifying, and quantifying the types of jobs required to support a UK bioenergy sector, understanding what skills are needed, where the current skills gaps are, whether there are any barriers to job development, and identifying the timescales of jobs / skills development needed to meet ETI’s targets. The scope of the work covers the UK and considers job creation in relation to the production of SRF, SRC and Miscanthus, with additional implications for achieving the UK Afforestation targets also considered. Job creation up to the point of first processing is included e.g. transport off farm, but any jobs after that initial journey off farm, e.g. processing, are not included. Ancillary jobs (such as administration roles, finance and marketing within companies in the bioenergy feedstock sector) are also excluded

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES (Bio-Energy - Production of other biomass-derived fuels (incl. Production from wastes)) ,Bioenergy - Abstract
This report has identified that between 1.0-1.8 Mha of land is potentially available for conversion to bioenergy, of which the two largest contributors are by utilizing the surplus area of arable crops by sending surplus production for first generation (1G) bioenergy processing as demand dictates (314,000-494,000 ha) and improved utilization of grassland (350,000-700,000 ha).The range in values represents the uncertainty around figures, with the lower value representing the most likely land area to be converted, whilst the higher area represents the potential area available for conversion if the market drivers are sufficient to convert all identified spared land to bioenergy production.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES (Bio-Energy - Production of other biomass-derived fuels (incl. Production from wastes)) ,Bioenergy - Abstract
This deliverable is an addition to the original RELB scope. The aim for this second additional piece of work was to identify the jobs impact that increasing UK bioenergy production to 1.2Mha by 2055 could bring. The report found that, due to the seasonal nature of bioenergy crop planting, management and harvesting, the majority of job opportunities will be part-time, but are complimentary to the seasonal demands of other roles in the agricultural and forestry sectors, particularly arable farming. However, the UK is not currently in a position to deliver the required planting rate of 30 kha/yr –The total planted area of Miscanthus and SRC Willow has remained at around 10 kha in recent years with a limited number of players in the market. Investment is needed in the production of plant breeding materials, including research into new establishment techniques to reduce costs. Investment is also needed in training and specialised equipment for planting and harvesting

Objectives: To explore women's attitudes and practices related to douching. Methods: We conducted focus groups between July and December 1999 with 34 black and 27 white women enrolled in a managed care plan in Memphis, Tennessee. Participants were at least 18 years of age and had douched at some time in their lives. Five groups were held with black women and five with white women. Results: The focus groups identified 13 themes that fell in four broad categories: general perceptions about feminine hygiene, douching behavior, factors perpetuating douching, and health information. Each of these categories is briefly discussed with supporting evidence. Conclusions: First, women have deeply-rooted beliefs about the critical role of douching in making them feel clean. Second, douching generally starts at a young age and is reinforced by family, friends, and the media. Third, douching is a very difficult behavior to change; any efforts to influence this behavior must consider women's beliefs and the media marketing efforts that promote douching. Finally, simplistic interventions that only provide risk information about douching are not likely to result in behavior change.

Earth Resources And Remote Sensing - Abstract
Computer assisted interpretation of small scale aerial imagery was found to be a cost effective and accurate method of mapping complex vegetation patterns if high resolution information is desired. This type of technique is suited for problems such as monitoring changes in species composition due to environmental factors and is a feasible method of monitoring and mapping large areas of wetlands. The technique has the added advantage of being in a computer compatible form which can be transformed into any georeference system of interest.

Earth Resources And Remote Sensing - Abstract
Land cover information from a 10 by 30 km test site in eastern Wisconsin extracted using 70 mm positive LANDSAT transparencies in an additive color viewer at a scale of 1:500,000 was compared with land cover information extracted using LANDSAT 9 x 9 inch positive transparencies at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Color infrared photography (NASA RB-57) at a scale of 1:60,000 provided ground truth for each land cover type. Interpretations were made for four land cover classes: 1) forest-brushland; (2) structures-barren land; (3) surface water; and (4) agricultural-open land. Statistical comparisons showed that neither method for the extraction of this data was clearly superior.

Requirements to control the large decrease in serum calcium (Ca) due to parturition and to increase the feed intake soon after parturition have been well accepted in dairy cows. This study was aimed to investigate the feed intake affected by serum Ca concentration with difructose anhydride (DFA) III supplement in dairy cows soon after parturition. Fourteen transition Holstein cows were divided into DFA and control (CONT) groups within 1 to 5 parity variations in each group. Measurement schedule for an individual cow was from 14 d before parturition to 7 d following parturition. The cows in DFA group were supplied 0.2 kg/head/d of DFA III feed containing 40 g of pure DFA III while the cows in CONT group received no DFA III. Other feeding procedures were the same for all cows in both groups. At parturition (d 0), serum Ca concentration sharply declined in both groups (p<0.05). Time interval for recovery from decreased serum Ca to its normal range (>9.0 mg/dL) tended to be faster in DFA group (12 h) than in the CONT group (48 h), but the differences were not significant. Active ruminal contraction was observed in DFA group at following parturition of d 1 (p<0.05), d 3 (p<0.05), and d 5 (p<0.01). Dry matter (DM) intake did not differ between the groups. However, positive correlations were observed between serum Ca concentration and ruminal contraction (p<0.001), and between ruminal contraction and DM intake (p<0.001) during following parturition. According to multiple regression analysis (R2 = 0.824, p<0.001), the DM intake was positively affected by serum Ca concentration and ruminal contraction. These results suggest that feed intake soon after parturition in dairy cows can be increased by improvement of serum Ca concentration and active ruminal contraction, but DFA III supplementation in this study did not improve the lower serum Ca concentration due to parturition. - Abstract
Fertilizer nitrogen (N) accounts for the majority of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with intensive wheat production, and the form of fertilizer N affects these emissions. Differences in manufacturing emissions (as represented in the current carbon accounting methodologies) tend to favour urea, even when using the best available manufacturing technologies (BAT), whereas differences in fertilizer N efficiency and emissions of ammonia tend to favour ammonium nitrate (AN). To resolve these differences, data from 47 experiments in two large UK studies conducted from 1982 to 1987 and from 2003 to 2005 were reanalysed, showing that on average urea efficiency was 0·9 of AN (although mean ammonia emissions in 10 subsidiary experiments indicated an efficiency difference of 0·2); treating urea with a urease inhibitor (TU; AGROTAIN®, active ingredient N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (n-BTPT)) brought its efficiency almost in line with AN; however, a significantly greater mean optimum N amount for TU (+0·1 of AN) was not fully explained. A standard response function relating wheat yield to applied AN was modified for degrees of relative inefficiency, thus enabling yields and GHG intensities (kg CO2e/tonne (t) grain) to be calculated using a PAS2050 compatible model for GHG emissions for any N amount of any N form. With AN manufactured by average European technology (AET), the estimated GHG intensity of wheat producing 8 t/ha was 451 kg/t; whereas with urea or TU made by AET it was 0.87–0.99 or 0.84–0.86 of this respectively. Using BAT for fertilizer manufacture, the grain's GHG intensity with AN and TU was 368 kg/t, but was 1·03–1·17 of this with untreated urea. The range of effects on GHG intensities arose mainly from remaining uncertainties in the inefficiencies of the N forms. Generally, economic margins and GHG intensities were not much affected by adjustments in N use for relative inefficiencies or different prices of urea-based fertilizers compared with AN. Overall, TU appeared to provide the best combination of economic performance and GHG intensity, unless the price for N as TU exceeded that for N as AN. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IMMUNOGLOBULINS ,GENES ,CHEMICAL structure - Abstract
To formulate a ‘logic’ for how a single immunoglobulin variable region gene generates antibodies with different antigen specificity and polyreactivity, we analysed chimeric antibodies produced in transgenic mice carrying the germ-line human V3–23 gene, multiple diversity (D) and joining (J) gene segments. Hybridomas producing antibodies encoded by the V3–23 gene in combination with different mouse V
κ genes were obtained by fusion of splenocytes from transgenic mice. All antibodies had human μ-chains and mouse light chains, were multimeric in structure and expressed the human V3–23 gene. Nucleotide sequence analyses of genes encoding the heavy and light chains of 12 antibodies in relation to antigen specificity highlighted the importance of heavy chain variable region CDR3 in determining reactivity with different antigens. However, the results also suggest that non-CDR3 sequences intrinsic to the V3–23 gene itself may be involved in, or determine, the binding of the chimeric antibodies to some of the antigens tested in the current study.
