The adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Ghana has raised a lot of public concerns and mixed feelings among some Ghanaians. Our present study, therefore, explored the current knowledge of the general public on GMOs, their perceptions, and factors that influence their understanding of GMOs. A total of 200 Ghanaians were interviewed using an online semi-structured questionnaire to solicit information on their knowledge of GMOs. The findings of the study showed that most Ghanaians (183 out of 200) are aware of GMOs. Age and level of education significantly influenced consumers' awareness of GMOs. The results also revealed that most of the participants have a medium to a high level of knowledge of GMOs; however, limited information about GMOs is available to the public. About 61% of the respondents are willing to consume GMOs when made available in Ghana. Also, the findings of the study showed that the respondents would prefer GM-labelled products. The educational level of the respondents significantly influenced their knowledge and understanding of GMOs. The study recommends that scientists and various media platforms provide a platform to address the concerns of the public on GMOs and occasionally engage them in GMO-related issues and their role in addressing food insecurity and malnutrition.

This study aimed to characterize the sputum microbiota of TB patients before and after the intensive phase of anti-TB treatment and assess changes in bacterial diversity and antibiotic resistance profiles.Methods: A total of 162 patients with TB (128 males, 34 females; age range 18– 82 years) provided sputum samples at baseline, of which 72 provided follow-up sputum after two months of intensive phase treatment. Sputum samples were cultured on standard agar plates, and distinct colonies were identified by Gram staining and bio-typing using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of the identified Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was performed using the Kirby–Bauer method according to the CLSI guidelines.Results: At baseline, 209 bacterial isolates were recovered, dominated by Gram-positive bacteria (GPB), particularly Streptococcus oralis (19.6%) and Staphylococcus aureus (13.9%). After treatment, the isolation rate significantly decreased (from 129% to 95.8%; p = 0.000002), with a shift towards Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) dominated by E. coli. High rates of antibiotic resistance were observed for both the GNB and GPB, notably to ampicillin (86.7%), tetracycline (74%), amoxicillin (70.3%), and sulfamethoxazole (63%) for GNP, and PEN (76.9%) for the GPB. 53% of S. aureus isolates were phenotypic Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 57.7% of suspected extended-spectrum Beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers were confirmed positive, predominantly carrying the blaCTX-M-1 gene.Conclusion: The observed antibiotic resistance among the identified isolates, including MRSA and ESBL, underscores the need for routine antibiotic susceptibility testing and judicious antibiotic use in Ghana. Further research is needed to explore the long-term consequences of these microbiome shifts on TB treatment outcomes and risk of secondary infections.Plain Language Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be the leading cause of adult mortality owing to a single infectious disease. The interplay between TB, diabetes, and HIV has become prominent in current TB research. However, the influence of these interactions on lung microflora, other than TB bacilli, has not been extensively explored. Notwithstanding, there is a potential interaction between these non-tuberculous bacteria and TB bacilli, which may impact disease progression and treatment outcomes of TB disease, irrespective of co-infection with HIV or comorbid diabetes. We observed antibiotic resistance among identified non-tuberculous bacteria isolated from the lungs of TB patients in Ghana, irrespective of co-infection with HIV or comorbidity with diabetes, including resistance to the commonly used drugs for treating bacterial diseases. Purpose – Adaptability and integration (ADI) are the core ingredients for environmentally sustainable construction (ESC), which preserves the ecology from unsupported human activities. However, the approach is lagging in developing countries, which has led to studying the influence of ADI on the adaptive capacity of small- and medium-scale construction organisations. Design/methodology/approach – The research employed a quantitative methodology, collecting 400 responses as a sample size. A construct of 14 influential factors concerning ADI within the Ghanaian small and medium-scale construction industry was developed. The data obtained from participants underwent analysis using SPSS version 26. The validity of the study’s findings was assessed by applying structural equation modelling (SEM) within the AMOS software. Findings – It was evident that innovation advancement and ongoing training and evaluations significantly influence ADI for adaptive capacity. Moreover, the system internally and vulnerability (SIV) and perceived need for implementation (PNI) sub-scales were the main latent components for best construction practices. Practical implications – Ghana’s small- and medium-scale construction organisations have yet to fully recognise the importance of ADI in enhancing adaptive capacity for the best ESC. However, the results indicated that ADI constructs will significantly influence implementation outcomes to ensure ESC. Originality/value – The originality of this research also resides in identifying how ADI affect small- and medium-scale construction organisation’s ability to ensure ecologically sustainable building practices.

Rapid urbanization and population growth in recent decades have placed significant pressure on urban cities to rely heavily on underground infrastructure, such as sewers and tunnels, to maintain the provision of essential services. These sewers, typically having a limited lifespan of 50 to 100 years, are prone to various forms of defects. While prior research has primarily addressed common sewer defect like crack, root intrusion, and infiltration among others, the challenge of encrustation—the formation of hard deposits within sewer systems—has received less attention. This study presents a pioneering deep-learning approach to detect encrustation in sewers by leveraging survey videos from 14 different sewers in the United Kingdom. Our work marks the first effort to develop models specifically for detecting encrustation using deep learning techniques, as previous studies have focused on other types of deposits such as settled and attached deposits. By converting the videos into sequential image frames, we subjected them to thorough analysis and several image pre-processing techniques. Our contributions include the development and comparison of different classification models using backbone CNN networks such as AlexNet, VGG16, EfficientNet, and VGG19 to classify encrustation. Notably, this study provides the first metric-based comparison of these backbone networks to identify the most effective model for encrustation detection. The results demonstrate an impressive 96 % accuracy using the deep architecture of VGG19. Beyond accuracy, this research explores the impact of data augmentation and network dropout on reducing overfitting and enhancing model performance. Additionally, we analyze the time complexities associated with training models with and without data augmentation, providing valuable insights into the efficiency of our approach.

The double burden of tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major public health challenge that demands urgent and integrated approaches. The interplay between these two chronic conditions presents unique clinical and public health management challenges, as well as social and economic implications. We explored the bidirectional relationship between TB and DM, emphasizing how DM increases susceptibility to TB and complicates its management, while TB may exacerbate glycemic control in diabetic patients. This review underscores the challenges associated with the management of both diseases, obstacles in screening TB patients for DM and TB preventive therapy for DM since inadequate glycemic control can impact treatment outcomes. Several studies have investigated the disease interplay; however, the results have been equivocal, and this may be exerting negative impacts on the disease prevention and treatment. TB-diabetes comorbidity has been linked to poor treatment outcomes whereas TB prevention in people with DM at present is a dilemma. In addition to highlighting how urgent it is to address this comorbidity, this review offers a road map for better prevention, treatment, and control of several factors underlying the TB-diabetes syndemic interaction.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on tuberculosis (TB) treatment response using bacterial clearance as a surrogate marker. Method: We compared smear microscopy, culture, and tuberculosis molecular bacterial load assay (TB-MBLA) for treatment monitoring. Following that, bacterial clearance was longitudinally monitored among TB-only (TB without DM) and TB-diabetes (TBDM) patients using TB-MBLA. Results: Ninety-three participants, including 59 TB-only and 34 TBDM patients, were enrolled. TB-only patients exhibited higher upper zone infiltrations (32/35 vs 16/22, p = 0.059) suggesting a trend towards significance, and significantly more cavitation in the same zone (16/18 vs 7/13, p = 0.028). There was a high proportion of Mycobacterium africanum (Maf) among the TBDM cohort (p = 0.0044).At baseline, TB-only patients exhibited a higher average bacterial burden (4.49 logeCFU/mL) compared to the TBDM group (3.91 logeCFU/mL) (p = 0.042). The bacterial load in the TB-only group decreased significantly during treatment but the TBDM group experienced delayed clearance throughout the intensive phase of anti-TB treatment even at day 56 (p = 0.028). The TB-only group demonstrated a shorter median time to TB-MBLA conversion to negative (57 days) compared to the TBDM group (62 days) (p = 0.022). Conclusion: These findings underscore the urgent call for understanding the interplay between diabetes and TB, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions in optimizing TB care for individuals comorbid with diabetes.

Drug-resistant (DR) tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health concern globally, complicating TB control and management efforts. West Africa has historically faced difficulty in combating DR-TB due to limited diagnostic skills, insufficient access to excellent healthcare, and ineffective healthcare systems. This has aided in the emergence and dissemination of DR Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) strains in the region. In the past, DR-TB patients faced insufficient resources, fragmented efforts, and suboptimal treatment outcomes. However, current efforts to combat DR-TB in the region are promising. These efforts include strengthening diagnostic capacities, improving access to quality healthcare services, and implementing evidence-based treatment regimens for DR-TB. Additionally, many West African National TB control programs are collaborating with international partners to scale up laboratory infrastructure, enhance surveillance systems, and promote infection control measures. Moreso, novel TB drugs and regimens, such as bedaquiline and delamanid, are being introduced to improve treatment outcomes for DR-TB cases. Despite these obstacles, there is optimism for the future of DR-TB control in West Africa. Investments are being made to improve healthcare systems, expand laboratory capacity, and support TB research and innovation. West African institutions are now supporting knowledge sharing, capacity building, and resource mobilization through collaborative initiatives such as the West African Network for TB, AIDS, and Malaria (WANETAM), the West African Health Organization (WAHO), and other regional or global partners. These efforts hold promise for improved diagnostics, optimized treatment regimens, and provide better patient outcomes in the future where drug-resistant TB in WA can be effectively controlled, reducing the burden of the disease, and improving the health outcomes of affected individuals.

Green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become popular because of their promising biological activities. However, for most of these nanoparticles, the cytotoxic effects have not been determined and their safety is not guaranteed. In a previous study, we successfully synthesized AgNPs (Cotyledon-AgNPs) using an extract of Cotyledon orbiculata, a medicinal plant traditionally used in South Africa to treat skin conditions. Cotyledon-AgNPs were shown to have significant antimicrobial and wound-healing activities. Fibroblast cells treated with extracts of C. orbiculata and Cotyledon-AgNPs demonstrated an enhanced growth rate, which is essential in wound healing. These nanoparticles therefore have promising wound-healing activities. However, the cytotoxicity of these nanoparticles is not known. In this study, the toxic effects of C. orbiculata extract and Cotyledon-AgNPs on the non-cancerous skin fibroblast (KMST-6) were determined using in vitro assays to assess oxidative stress and cell death. Both the C. orbiculata extract and the Cotyledon-AgNPs did not show any significant cytotoxic effects in these assays. Gene expression analysis was also used to assess the cytotoxic effects of Cotyledon-AgNPs at a molecular level. Of the eighty-four molecular toxicity genes analysed, only eight (FASN, SREBF1, CPT2, ASB1, HSPA1B, ABCC2, CASP9, and MKI67) were differentially expressed. These genes are mainly involved in fatty acid and mitochondrial energy metabolism. The results support the finding that Cotyledon-AgNPs have low cytotoxicity at the concentrations tested. The upregulation of genes such as FASN, SERBF1, and MKI-67 also support previous findings that Cotyledon-AgNPs can promote wound healing via cell growth and proliferation. It can therefore be concluded that Cotyledon-AgNPs are not toxic to skin fibroblast cells at the concentration that promotes wound healing. These nanoparticles could possibly be safely used for wound healing.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the deadliest and most common causes of malignancy and death in men worldwide, with a higher prevalence and mortality in developing countries specifically. Factors such as age, family history, race and certain genetic mutations are some of the factors contributing to the occurrence of PCa in men. Recent advances in technology and algorithms gave rise to the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of PCa. With the availability of medical image datasets and emerging trends in state-of-the-art machine and deep learning techniques, there has been a growth in recent related publications. Materials and Methods: In this study, we present a systematic review of PCa diagnosis with medical images using machine learning and deep learning techniques. We conducted a thorough review of the relevant studies indexed in four databases (IEEE, PubMed, Springer and ScienceDirect) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. With well-defined search terms, a total of 608 articles were identified, and 77 met the final inclusion criteria. The key elements in the included papers are presented and conclusions are drawn from them. Results: The findings show that the United States has the most research in PCa diagnosis with machine learning, Magnetic Resonance Images are the most used datasets and transfer learning is the most used method of diagnosing PCa in recent times. In addition, some available PCa datasets and some key considerations for the choice of loss function in the deep learning models are presented. The limitations and lessons learnt are discussed, and some key recommendations are made. Conclusion: The discoveries and the conclusions of this work are organized so as to enable researchers in the same domain to use this work and make crucial implementation decisions.

In this work, a new adaptive numerical method is proposed for solving nonlinear, singular, and stiff initial value problems often encountered in real life. Starting with a fixed step size, the new method’s performance can be significantly enhanced by introducing an adaptive step-size approach. The qualitative properties of the proposed method have been investigated to determine the efficiency and reliability of the method. The proposed method is of fifth-order accuracy, zero stable, L-stable, and consistent. In addition, the proposed method is convergent, and its stability properties are also shown through its Order Stars. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the performance of the method. The results obtained show that the proposed method compares favourably with existing methods.

Color is essential for the fashion and art of fabrics, with its retention being a quality measure of great significance for the brand and user. The colorfastness of some metallic fabrics has been established using absorption spectroscopy, by determining the quality and quantity of dye that bled after undergoing wash laundry processes. Two metallic fabrics (X and Y) and washing detergents (liquid and powdered) were used. The fabrics were washed using GyroWash machine set for normal (40°C) and hot (60°C) wash for durations of 60 min and 90 min. There was a repeat for a second wash. The wastewater after each wash (sample) was collected, and the absorption spectra were recorded using a double-beam spectrophotometer. The quality of dyes drained was determined using Peakfit analysis to deconvolute the absorption spectrum to reveal the presence of multiple individual wavelengths, and quantified using their relative intensity values. The identified peaks were between 200 nm and 370 nm, which lie within the UV–Vis absorption band of synthetic dyes referred to as azo dyes. The liquid soap bled more dye under the same washing conditions, with fabric Y demonstrating an inferior ability to retain its dye compared to fabric X. A higher amount of dye was drained during the hot wash, with the amount of dye that bled from both fabrics reducing after the first wash. Euclidean similarity was performed using principal component analysis to identify the spectra close to the detergent solution (reference spectrum) in Euclidean distance sense. Points from the wastewater spectra similar to the reference had shorter absolute distances, indicating less bleeding, while more dissimilar points registered longer distance, indicating more bleeding. This absorption spectroscopy technique is scientific and objective compared to the conventional subjective gray scale method. It will help textile manufacturers develop standardized testing protocols to assess the colorfastness of metallic printed fabrics, ensuring that products meet quality standards before they reach the market.

AbstractThe patriarchal power system that dominates most societies creates an inherent conflict. With the recent gender-transformative drives however, the capacity of most women has been strengthened, through access to education and paid work, enabling them to have access to and control over certain resources and power they were previously denied. This new resource and power redistribution within the household is often assumed to have the potential to create an avenue to either increase or reduce domestic conflicts. More importantly, domestic conflicts are generated within the household when a change in the function of one spouse does not lead to a corresponding change in the role of the other. Using the mixed research method approach, 400 questionnaires were administered to households in rural and urban areas in the Ashanti region of Ghana in addition to in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. This paper examined domestic conflict as a possible outcome of gender role changes in rural and urban communities in Ghana. Particularly, the paper focused on how resource and power redistribution facilitate or reduce domestic conflicts. It was found that, when both partners assist each other in their traditionally assigned roles, domestic conflicts were greatly reduced in both rural and urban spaces. However, threatened superiority of men, male insecurity, and perceived female arrogance were found to be the main challenges to gender role change.

Background: It is predicted that the population of sub-Saharan Africa will be thrice its size by the end of the 21st century. Our study compared patterns, incentives and disincentives for the uptake of contraceptives in rural and urban communities of Lagos, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This is a population-based cross-sectional study on 1445 women of reproductive ages 15–49 years using a cluster sampling technique and a pre-tested, interviewer-administered electronic questionnaire in 2020. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 26.0 and ethical approval was obtained for the study. Results: About 32.4% of the respondents were rural dwellers and 67.6% were urban residents. The overall mean age was 31.7 ± 7.8 years. In terms of pattern, slightly over half (53.3%) of all respondents had ever used family planning (FP), including modern contraceptives and slightly less than a third (30.8%) currently use FP methods in both rural and urban communities, respectively. Predominant disincentives for non-use of FP include a desire to retain fertility, lack of further need, unbearable side effects and lack of spousal support. The odds of being an urban dweller currently using a method of contraceptive method is 4.169 times higher for earners above ₦60,000, which is twice the minimum wage compared to those without income (adjusted odd's ratio: 4.169, 95% confidence interval: 1.395–12.462). Conclusion: Sustained effort is required to improve contraceptive uptake, FP service delivery and demand satisfaction for modern contraceptives to enable the achievement of demographic dividends and gains.

The movement of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) pollen as a germplasm material between oil palm-growing countries for the purposes of plant-breeding programs is common in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America. Reports of pollen contamination with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis (Foe), the causal agent of Fusarium wilt disease for oil palm, heightened the need for an operational decontamination technique for oil palm pollen prior to export. In this study, high-intensity, pulsed polychromatic light (HIPPL) and conventional UV (UV-C) were used as decontamination tools to treat Foe spores and oil palm pollen. We combined qualitative studies for HIPPL- and UV-C-treated Foe spores and quantitative studies for treated pollen. The study showed that despite UV-C and HIPPL successfully controlling Foe, oil palm pollen had reduced viability or was inviable upon exposure to various doses of UV-C and HIPPL sources. The effects of UV-C at doses of 2.5, 5, and 10 kJ/m2 and HIPPL at 10, 20, and 40 pulses were determined for oil palm pollen and Foe germination. UV-C doses of 10 kJ/m2 and 40 pulses of HIPPL showed significant reduction in germination of oil palm pollen but had no adverse effect on Foe viability. Background: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy which causes irreversible vision loss. Standard perimetry, which is essential for glaucoma diagnosis, can only detect glaucomatous visual filed loss when considerable structural damage has occurred. Contrast sensitivity is one of the visual function tests that is reduced in eyes with glaucoma. It is known to be affected in pre-perimetric stages of glaucoma. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the discriminating ability of central contrast sensitivity perimetry in eyes with and without glaucoma. Design: The study employed a cross-sectional study design. Methods: The study participants were made of two groups; eyes diagnosed with glaucoma by an ophthalmologist based on visual field test and optical coherence tomography (OCT) and age- and sex-matched controls who were declared free from glaucoma. Static contrast sensitivity (CS) was measured in the central 10° of visual field using a custom psychophysical test. Results: There were 45 eyes with glaucoma and 45 age- and sex-matched controls in this study. The static CS in the glaucoma group was significantly reduced in 9 out of the 13 tested locations in the central 10° of the visual field. The mean static CS at 5°, 10°, superior hemifield and inferior hemifield were all significantly reduced in the glaucoma patients compared to the controls. Conclusion: Static CS measurement is a sensitive approach that can be utilized to aid in the detection of glaucoma. The use of static CS can be adopted in the development of a cost-effective yet sensitive screening tool for the detection of glaucoma.

BackgroundThe epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) lineage 5 (L5) infections in Ghana revealed a significantly increased prevalence in Ewes compared to other self-reported ethnic groups. In that context, we sought to investigate the early phase of tuberculosis (TB) infection using ex vivo infection of macrophages derived from the blood of Ewe and Akan ethnic group volunteers with MTBC L4 and L5 strains.MethodsThe study participants consisted of 16 controls, among which self-reported Akan and Ewe ethnicity was equally represented, as well as 20 cured TB cases consisting of 11 Akans and 9 Ewes. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from both healthy controls and cured TB cases. CD14+ monocytes were isolated and differentiated into monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) before infection with L4 or L5 endemic strains. The bacterial load was assessed after 2 hours (uptake) as well as 3 and 7 days post-infection.ResultsWe observed a higher capacity of MDMs from Ewes to phagocytose L4 strains (p < 0.001), translating into a higher bacillary load on day 7 (p < 0.001) compared to L5, despite the higher replication rate of L5 in Ewe MDMs (fold change: 1.4 vs. 1.2, p = 0.03) among the controls. On the contrary, within macrophages from Akans, we observed a significantly higher phagocytic uptake of L5 (p < 0.001) compared to L4, also translating into a higher load on day 7 (p = 0.04). However, the replication rate of L4 in Akan MDMs was higher than that of L5 (fold change: L4 = 1.2, L4 = 1.1, p = 0.04). Although there was no significant difference in the uptake of L4 and L5 among cured TB cases, there was a higher bacterial load of both L4 (p = 0.02) and L5 (p = 0.02) on day 7 in Ewe MDMs.ConclusionOur results suggest that host ethnicity (driven by host genetic diversity), MTBC genetic diversity, and individual TB infection history are all acting together to modulate the outcome of macrophage infections by MTBC.
