Pulse shape discriminating scintillator materials in many cases allow the user to identify two basic kinds of pulses arising from two kinds of particles: neutrons and gammas. An uncomplicated solution for building a classifier consists of a two-component mixture model learned from a collection of pulses from neutrons and gammas at a range of energies. Depending on the conditions of data gathered to be classified, multiple classes of events besides neutrons and gammas may occur, most notably pileup events. All these kinds of events are anomalous and, in cases where the class of the particle is in doubt, it is preferable to remove them from the analysis. This study compares the performance of several machine learning and analytical methods for using the scores from the two-component model to identify anomalous events and in particular to remove pileup events. We present a long-term multi-wavelength light curve of Galactic black hole candidate GRS 1758-258 by combining previously published and archival data from GRANAT, ROSAT, CGRO, RXTE, SAX, ASCA, EXOSAT, and the VLA. In addition we include first spectral results from the balloon-borne Gamma-ray Arcminute Telescope Imaging System (GRATIS). In light of divergent analyses of the 1991-1993 ROSAT observations, we have re-analyzed these data; we find the soft X-rays track the hard X-rays, and that the fits require no black-body component-- indicating that GRS 1758-258 did not go to the high state in 1993. We offer an interpretation based on the ADAF model for a system with mdot \ltsim mdot_crit. We find the 1990-1993 coeval hard and soft X-ray observations support the ADAF predictions. We discuss a new way to constrain black-hole mass with spectral data and the ADAF theory, and apply this technique to GRS 1758-258 to find M_1 \gtsim 8--9 M_sol at an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc. Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we have imaged a complete, flux-limited sample of Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey BL Lacertae objects in order to study the properties of BL Lac host galaxies and to use quantitative methods to determine the richness of their galaxy cluster environments.

New observations of the very red quasar or BL Lac object PKS 1413 + 135 are presented. Optical imaging and spectroscopy confirm the claim that the host galaxy to this BL Lac is a spiral, and H-band imaging shows the point source centered in the galaxy to within 0.1 arcsec. A reanalysis of Einstein X-ray data finds evidence for an extremely large column density in this source. While the astrometric evidence supports the hypothesis that PKS 1413 + 135 is the very unusual case of a BL Lac object in a spiral galaxy, a highly extincted nuclear source would produce other observable features in this galaxy that are not observed: narrow emission-line region and large thermal IR flux. Their absence argues for this source being background to the spiral.

Optical CCD imaging at the position of a bright X-ray point source just off the visible disk of the nearby irregular galaxy M82 constrain it to be an X-ray binary with a 0.2-4 keV X-ray luminosity of not less than 9 x 10 exp 38 ergs/sec. Assuming that the X-ray emission is due to a single object, then by asumming an Eddington limit appropriate for pure electron scattering, this luminosity requires a minimum primary mass of not less than 15 solar masses; thus, this X-ray source is a black hole candidate. If the brightest optical object detected inside the X-ray error circle at B about 22.2 is the secondary to the X-ray emitter, it is most likely an early type star making this system the most luminous massive X-ray binary system known.

Using a complete, X-ray selected sample of BL Lacertae Objects (XBLs), we find that V sub e/V sub a = 0.34 +/- 0.06 implying that the cosmological evolution of this type of AGN is 'negative'; i.e., fewer or less luminous BL Lacs in the past compared to the current epoch. In the process of deriving this result, the selection criteria and observational properties of XBLs are described.
