Abstract

An attempt is made to show that the combination of data with models leads to a sequence of conventionally ill-posed problems which can be treated in a systematic and practical way by control-theory techniques. The illustrative approach is to exploit the very great mathematical simplifications which result when the methods of finite dimensional vector spaces are used, thus reducing a lot of difficult mathematics to classical least squares. The immediate motivation for this study comes from ocean acoustic tomography.

Abstract

Aspiration of foreign bodies is a common cause of respiratory distress in children between the age of 6 months and 3 years. The diagnosis of radiopaque foreign bodies is easy when the whole respiratory tract is depicted. Nonopaque foreign bodies need a more differentiated diagnostic approach. The first step should be plain films in inspiration and expiration. The performance of additional chest radiographs, fluoroscopy and if need be CT or nuclear scans depends on the result of the plain films. The chest radiograph may reveal a variety of findings, the commonest of which is unilateral air trapping. Rarely, atelectasis, recurrent pneumonia at the same localisation and inspiratory obstruction are found. Combinations of the above-mentioned findings are possible. Abstract

Spurred by the sustained operation and new development of satellite and in-situ observing systems, global ocean state estimation efforts that gear towards climate applications have flourished in the past decade. A hierarchy of estimation methods is being used to routinely synthesize various observations with global ocean models. Many of the estimation products are available through public data servers. There have been an increasingly large number of applications of these products for a wide range of research topics in physical oceanography as well as other disciplines. These studies often provide important feedback to the observing systems. This white paper describes the approaches used by the estimation systems in synthesizing observations and model dynamics, highlights the applications of their products for climate research, and addresses the challenges ahead in relation to the observing systems. Further applications to study climate variability using ENSEMBLE state estimation products are described by a white paper by Stammer et al. (2010).

Abstract

Analyzing ocean variability, understanding its importance for the climate system, and quantifying its socio-economic impacts are among the primarymotivations for obtaining ongoing global ocean observations. There are several possible approaches to address these tasks. One with much potential for future ocean information services and for climate predictionsis called ocean synthesis, and is concerned with merging all available ocean observations with the dynamics embedded in an ocean circulation model to obtain estimates of the changing ocean that are more accurate than either system alone can provide. The field of ocean synthesis has matured over the last decade. Several global ocean syntheses exist today and can be used toinvestigate key scientific questions, such as changes in sea level, heat content, or transports. This CWP summarizes climate variability as seen by several ocean syntheses, describes similarities and differences in these solutions and uses results to highlight developments necessary over the next decade to improve ocean products and services. It appears that multi-model ensemble approaches can be useful to obtain better estimates of the ocean. To make full use of such a system, though, one needs detailed errorinformation not only about data and models, but also about the estimated states. Results show that estimates tend to cluster around methodologies and therefore are not necessarily independent from each other. Results also reveal the impact of a historically under-sampled ocean on estimates of inter-decadal variability in the ocean. To improve future estimates, we need not only to sustain the existing observing system but to extend it to include full-depth ARGO-type measurements, enhanced information about boundary currents and transports through key regions, and to keep all important satellitesensors flying indefinitely, including altimetry, gravimetry and ice thickness, microwave SST observations, wind stress measurements and oceancolor. This document reports on recent advances in the development of the adjoint code generator OpenAD/F. We give an overview of the software design, and we discuss case studies that illustrate the feasibility of adjoint code generation. Our main target application is the MIT General Circulation Model - a numerical model designed for study of the atmosphere, ocean, and climate.

Abstract

Spectral properties of whitecaps are of importance for color ocean remote sensing and aerosol optical thickness probing from satellite-based instruments. They also influence planetary albedo and climate. In particular, whitecaps may affect the response of the climate system to changes in greenhouse gases and other atmospheric constituents. Several experimental measurements of whitecap spectral reflectance have been performed both in the surf zone and in the open ocean, which indicate that oceanic foam cannot be considered as a gray body (e.g., for satellite remote sensing techniques). This paper is devoted to the interpretation of experiments performed in terms of the radiative transfer theory. Only the case of a semi-infinite foam is studied in detail. However, results can be easily extended to the case of finite foamed media having large optical thickness. The model introduced is capable of explaining main features observed, like a sharp decrease of the foam spectral reflectance in the infrared as compared with the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum and a high correlation of the foam reflectance R and the water absorption coefficient a. A simple method to retrieve the spectral dependence of a from the spectral foam reflectance R is proposed.

Abstract

The possibility of using topography in a state estimation context as a control parameter is explored in a linear barotropic shallow water model. Along with its adjoint, the model is used to systematically assess the influence of the depth field on the modeled circulation in a steady-state. Sensitivity of the flow field to the topography is greater in a partially blocked zonal channel than in a subtropical gyre. Hypothetical surface elevations are used to represent the types of data actually available. In neither case can all the details of the topography be recovered, showing that the relationship between topography and elevation does not have a unique inverse, and that many details of the topography are irrelevant to the particular physics under consideration.
