We present two routes of millifluidic-based synthesis of solid core-solid shell particles with submillimeter size. These particles, which behave as mechanical resonators, are key components of targeted three-dimensional locally resonant acoustic metamaterials working in the ultrasonic frequency range. The first route involves the encapsulation of a solid core into a liquid shell, which is then in-line solidified through gelation. The second route involves two successive coflows followed by two solidifications triggered by UV irradiation and complexation, respectively. Original solutions to several practical issues are presented. We report on the direct experimental observation of laser-induced flows in isotropic liquids that scatter light. We use a droplet microemulsion in the two-phase regime, which behaves like a binary mixture. Close to its critical consolute line, the microemulsion undergoes large refractive index fluctuations that scatter light. The radiation pressure of a laser beam is focused onto the soft interface between the two phases of the microemulsion and induces a cylindrical liquid jet that continuously emits droplets. We demonstrate that this dripping phenomenon takes place as a consequence of a steady flow induced by the transfer of linear momentum from the optical field to the liquid due to light scattering. We first show that the cylindrical jet guides light as a step-index liquid optical fiber whose core diameter is self-adapted to the light itself. Then, by modelling the light-induced flow as a low-Reynolds-number, parallel flow, we predict the dependence of the dripping flow rate on the thermophysical properties of the microemulsion and the laser beam power. The optical index constants of CO[sub 2] at critical density are measured by terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS–THz) in the frequency range 0.1–1.5 THz. Since supercritical CO[sub 2] is usually presented as a “universal” solvent, we systematically study the refractive index variations in the vicinity of its critical point along the critical isochore by scanning temperature from 295 to 308 K to explore the liquid, the gas, and the supercritical states. Density changes with temperature result in refractive index variations that are found to fit the Lorenz–Lorentz relationship in the THz frequency range. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. The propagation of coherent longitudinal and transverse waves in random distributions of spherical scatterers embedded in an elastic matrix is studied. The investigated frequency range is the vicinity of the resonance frequencies of the translational and rotational motion of the spheres forced by the waves, where strong dispersion and attenuation are predicted. A technique for making samples made of layers of carbide tungsten beads embedded in epoxy resin is presented, which allows control of the scatterers distribution, induce short-range positional correlations, and minimize the anisotropy of samples. Comparison between phase velocity and attenuation measurements and a model based on multiple scattering theory (MST) shows that bulk effective properties accurately described by MST are obtained from three beads layers. Besides, short-range correlations amplify the effect of mechanical resonances on the propagation of longitudinal and transverse coherent waves. As a practical consequence, the use of short-range positional correlations may be used to enhance the attenuation of elastic waves by disordered, locally resonant, elastic metamaterials, and MST globally correctly predicts the effect of short-range positional order on their effective properties., (© 2024 Acoustical Society of America.)

We present a thorough procedure for measuring the rheological properties of soft, highly attenuating, visco-elastic materials at ultrasonic frequencies. The material chosen for this illustration is a crosslinked Polyurethane (PU) elastomer (Sika UR3440 type), which is widely used in the field of underwater acoustics. We determine its complex longitudinal modulus M and shear modulus G as function of frequency in the range 1-5 MHz and of temperature in the range 5-40 °C. M is determined from the measurement of the transmission of longitudinal, plane waves by a slab of PU immersed in water. G is determined by contact measurements from the transmission and reflection of transverse, plane waves by a slab of PU. This determination of G for such a soft and viscous material as PU is made possible by the use of thin slabs and the implementation of an original signal analysis. M, G and bulk modulus K are found to obey the time-temperature superposition principle and to be accurately described by a fractional derivative rheological model. We report on numerical simulation of fluid interface deformations induced by either acoustic or optical radiation pressure. This is done by solving simultaneously the scalar wave propagation equation and the two-phase flow equations using the boundary element method. Using dimensional analysis, we show that interface deformation morphogenesis is universal, i.e., depends on the same dimensionless parameters in acoustics and electromagnetics. We numerically investigate a few selected phenomena-in particular the shape of large deformations and the slenderness transition and its hysteresis-and compare with existing and novel experimental observations. Qualitative agreement between the numerical simulations and experiments is found when the mutual interaction between wave propagation and wave-induced deformations is taken into account. Our results demonstrate the leading role of the radiation pressure in morphogenesis of fluid interface deformations and the importance of the propagation-deformation interplay.

We measure the reflection and transmission of shear waves by slabs of random dispersions of hard, dense spheres in a viscoelastic matrix. By modeling the slab as a Fabry-Pérot interferometer, we determine the effective wave number of coherent shear waves in this scattering medium and its effective mass density. We evidence the effect of the resonant rigid-body translation and rotation of the spheres on the propagation. We validate a vectorial model of multiple scattering for volume fractions of spheres up to 10%, revealing the signature of two modes of propagation.

One of the classical limitations for the investigation of the local rheology of small scale soft objects and/or confined fluids is related to the difficulty to control mechanical contact and its consequences. In order to overcome these issues, we implement a new local, active, fast and contactless optical strategy, called optorheology, which is based on both the optical radiation pressure of a laser wave to dynamically deform a fluid interface and interferometry to probe this deformation with nanometric resolution. This optical approach is first validated by measuring the surface tension and the viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids. We also show how non-equilibrium situations, such as continuous evaporation, can be used to deduce the thickness dependence of the rheology of thin films and the concentration dependence of the viscosity of binary liquid mixtures and suspensions. We further extend the investigation to elasticity and viscoelasticity measurements of polymer solutions. Finally, since liquids may absorb light, we discuss the influence of a weak laser heating and the triggering of interface deformations by thermocapillary tangential stresses that could represent a complementary approach to probe the rheology at small scale.

The popping sound of a bursting soap bubble is acquired using microphone arrays and analyzed using spherical harmonics decomposition. Using the theoretical framework of aeroacoustics, we demonstrate that this acoustic emission originates mainly from the capillary stresses exerted by the liquid soap film on the air and that it quantitatively reflects the out-of-equilibrium evolution of the flowing liquid film. This constitutes the proof of concept that the acoustic signature of violent events of physical or biological origin could be used to measure the forces at play during these events.

This paper presents a technique for measuring the complex shear modulus of thin slabs of viscoelastic solids based on the measurement of the reflection and transmission of plane shear waves through a sample inserted between two delays lines. Reproducible shear wave transmission through the sample is achieved by inserting bond layers with controlled thickness between the delay lines and the sample and by characterizing beforehand the bond rheology. The frequency dependent complex shear modulus is quantitatively evaluated from the transmission and reflection coefficients using an exact model of interferences within the delay line-bond-sample-bond-delay line sandwich and by selecting the solution among the muliple solutions of the inverse problem from considerations on time of flight and sample thickness. Thanks to its reproducibility and accuracy, this method appears as an original and efficient technique for quantitatively characterizing the high frequency shear modulus of attenuating materials.

Acoustofluidics is acknowledged as a powerful tool offering a contactless and label-free manipulation of fluids, micro-beads, and living cells. To date, most techniques rely on the use of propagating acoustic waves and take advantage of the associated acoustic radiation force in standing or progressive fields. Here, we present a new approach based on the generation of an evanescent acoustic field above a substrate. This field is obtained by means of subsonic interfacial waves giving rise to a well-defined standing wave pattern. By both imaging and probing the evanescent acoustic field, we show that these interfacial waves are guided waves known as quasi-Scholte acoustic waves. Scholte waves present very interesting features for applications in acoustofluidics. Namely, they confine the acoustic energy to the vicinity of the surface, they are nearly lossless and thus can propagate over long distances along the substrate, and finally they do not require any particular material for the substrate. With a very simple and low-cost device we show several examples of applications including patterning lines or arrays of cells, triggering spinning of living cells, and separating plasma from RBC in a whole blood microdroplet.

The effective velocity and attenuation of longitudinal waves through random dispersions of rigid, tungsten-carbide beads in an elastic matrix made of epoxy resin in the range of beads volume fraction 2%-10% are determined experimentally. The multiple scattering model proposed by Luppé, Conoir, and Norris [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131(2), 1113-1120 (2012)], which fully takes into account the elastic nature of the matrix and the associated mode conversions, accurately describes the measurements. Theoretical calculations show that the rigid particles display a local, dipolar resonance which shares several features with Minnaert resonance of bubbly liquids and with the dipolar resonance of core-shell particles. Moreover, for the samples under study, the main cause of smoothing of the dipolar resonance of the scatterers and the associated variations of the effective mass density of the dispersions is elastic relaxation, i.e., the finite time required for the shear stresses associated to the translational motion of the scatterers to propagate through the matrix. It is shown that its influence is governed solely by the value of the particle to matrix mass density contrast.

We report on the first quantitative test of acoustic orbital angular momentum transfer to a sound absorbing object immersed in a viscous liquid. This is done by realizing an original experiment that is to spin a millimeter-size target disk using an ultrasonic vortex beam. We demonstrate the balance between the acoustic radiation torque calculated from the Brillouin stress tensor and the viscous torque evaluated from the steady state spinning frequency. Moreover, we unveil a rotational acoustic streaming phenomenon that results from the acoustic angular momentum transfer to the host fluid. We show that it lowers the viscous torque, thereby restoring the torque balance.
