9. What Is Beyond Hyperbola Detection and Characterization in Ground-Penetrating Radar Data?—Implications from the Archaeological Site of Goting, Germany.

Abstract

Hyperbolae in radargrams are caused by a variety of small subsurface objects. The analysis of their curvature enables the determination of propagation velocity in the subsurface, which is important for exact time-to-depth conversion and migration and also yields information on the water content of the soil. Using deep learning methods and fitting (DLF) algorithms, it is possible to automatically detect and analyze large numbers of hyperbola in 3D Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) datasets. As a result, a 3D velocity model can be established. Combining the hyperbola locations and the 3D velocity model with reflection depth sections and timeslices leads to improved archaeological interpretation due to (1) correct time-to-depth conversion through migration with the 3D velocity model, (2) creation of depthslices following the topography, (3) evaluation of the spatial distribution of hyperbolae, and (4) derivation of a 3D water content model of the site. In an exemplary study, we applied DLF to a 3D GPR dataset from the multi-phased (2nd to 12th century CE) archaeological site of Goting on the island of Föhr, Northern Germany. Using RetinaNet, we detected 38,490 hyperbolae in an area of 1.76 ha and created a 3D velocity model. The velocities ranged from approximately 0.12 m/ns at the surface to 0.07 m/ns at approx. 3 m depth in the vertical direction; in the lateral direction, the maximum velocity variation was ±0.048 m/ns. The 2D-migrated radargrams and subsequently created depthslices revealed the remains of a longhouse, which was not known beforehand and had not been visible in the unmigrated timeslices. We found hyperbola apex points aligned along linear strong reflections. They can be interpreted as stones contained in ditch fills. The hyperbola points help to differentiate between ditches and processing artifacts that have a similar appearance as the ditches in time-/depthslices. From the derived 3D water content model, we could identify the thickness of the archaeologically relevant layer across the whole site. The layer contains a lot of humus and has a high water retention capability, leading to a higher water content compared to the underlying glacial moraine sand, which is well-drained. Abstract

The Lieth Moor area, located in the district of Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is a hotspot of Late Palaeolithic settlement activity. The exceptional abundance of archaeological sites is commonly attributed to the presence of a large palaeolake. However, in the Weichselian Late glacial, there were numerous large lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. Thus, a well-founded explanation for the find concentration in Lieth Moor is still lacking, and forming a research desideratum until today. To improve our understanding of this Late Pleistocene landscape and its appeal to hunter–gatherer groups of that time, we conducted a large-scale archaeogeophysical study focusing on a possible ford of the potential palaeolake. We employed Ground-Penetrating Radar and Electromagnetic Induction measurements, supplemented by existing legacy drill-probing data, to identify and map limnic gyttja (organic lake mud) sediments and their spatial distribution within the area. The findings of our study indicate that during the Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene, the Lieth Moor area comprised a cluster of small ponds rather than a continuous lake. These ponds likely interconnected during periods of increased water levels. The presence of dry islands within the region corresponds with archaeological evidence, suggesting that Late Palaeolithic communities visited some of these islands. The absence of the previously postulated palaeolake places the known findings within a completely new palaeoenvironmental context: instead of the previously suspected ford, we assume that the proximity to the Elbe Palaeovalley played a decisive role in the repeated habitation of Lieth Moor. This area, rich in fresh water and fish, along with the dune chain situated to the west, serving as both a vantage point and windbreak, presented an ideal location for awaiting animals migrating along the river Elbe and/or as a resting place within the settlement system of mobile hunter–fisher–gatherer groups. Abstract

An investigation of the Magdalenian occupation at Étiolles-Les Coudray (France) was conducted using geophysical methods. Based on ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), electromagnetic induction (EMI), and stratigraphic information, we present a reconstruction of the main sediment interfaces carrying the Magdalenian occupation. Étiolles-Les Coudray is one of the most important open-air campsites in the Paris Basin, where consecutive settlements distributed along the Hauldres stream were preserved by silts. The geoarchaeological goals were, in particular, the reconstruction of the ancient environment in which hunter–gatherers settled, providing spatialized known stratigraphies able to find an echo in the Seine Valley. Moreover, a focus on the capability of geophysical methods to detect archaeological features is also presented and discussed. We observed that the major reflections in the GPR records were generated from interfaces that have grain size variation: (1) the bottom of the Holocene colluvium and (2) the bottom of the upper Late Glacial silt. EMI and ERT show a very clear horizon associated with the upper Late Glacial silt, in some places even more clearly defined than with GPR. We confirmed the presence of a channel along the slope, placed under Locus 1, and a second channel of the same type globally following the paleotopography of Locus 2. We created a thickness map of the "beige sandy silt" and hypothesized a high probability of good preservation conditions of Magdalenian evidence. Finally, the detection of several localized diffraction hyperbolas in the GPR record offers the possibility to obtain the ground truth of the geophysical results in the near future and verify the nature (archaeological or geological) of these features. International audience; Pendant les trois derniers millénaires, Ainos (moderne Enez, dans la province turqued’Edirne, en Europe) a été un des carrefours commerciaux de la Méditerranée orientale, entrel’Asie Mineure, l’Europe du Sud et les Balkans. Située sur une île qui est définitivementdevenue, au Néolithique, une presqu’île, entre les embouchures du fleuve Hèbre (en turcMeriç) et la mer Égée, Ainos/Enez a contrôlé tout le trafic Ouest-Est le long de la côteégéenne, mais aussi Nord-Sud, le long de la vallée du fleuve et de ses affluents. À l’époqueantique et médiévale, le delta de l’Hèbre n’avait pas encore atteint la ville elle-même, qui étaitentourée par la mer. Des bancs de sable ont progressivement fermé les golfes autour de lapresqu’île, donnant naissance à des lagunes propices à l’installation des ports, des salines etdes pêcheries. Cette importance stratégique d’Ainos est confirmée par les auteurs anciens etmodernes, mais aussi par les découvertes archéologiques extrêmement riches, surtout dans lesnécropoles fouillées par Sait Başaran autour de la ville.Dans cet exposé, nous évoquerons l’histoire d’Ainos, reconstituée à partir de sourceslittéraires confrontées à la documentation archéologique et géoarchéologique. Dans lapremière partie, nous nous concentrons sur l’espace urbain (l’« Acropole » et l’espace habitéautour), depuis le VI e siècle av. J.-C. à l’époque ottomane. Dans la seconde partie, nousprésentons les espaces frontaliers : les fortifications et quelques découvertes des nécropoles,actuellement à l’étude au Musée d’Edirne. Dans la dernière partie, nous synthétisons nosrésultats sur les ports urbains et extra-urbains, et sur les routes reliant Ainos (et Gala Gölü) aureste du monde.

Νησί των Νεολιθικών χρόνων, χερσόνησος από την Εποχή του Χαλκού, η πόλη του Αίνουυπήρξε ένα από τα κύρια εμπορικά σταυροδρόμια του Βορείου Αιγαίου, στις εκβολές τουΈβρου, μεταξύ της ελληνικής θάλασσας και της θρακικής ενδοχώρας. Οι ετήσιες τουρκικέςαρχαιολογικές ανασκαφές (ξεκίνησαν το 1973, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Sait Başaran για σχεδόν40 χρόνια, έως το 2019) έχουν αποκαλύψει αρκετά στοιχεία της χώρας (νεκροπόλεις, δρόμοι,οχυρώσεις). Η γεωαρχαιολογική έρευνα, που ξεκίνησε από τους Helmut Brückner, WolfgangRabbel και Thomas Schmidts στο 2011-2012, συνεχίστηκε τώρα στο πλαίσιο μιας γαλλικήςδιεθνούς αποστολής που συντονίστηκε από την Anca Dan, παρήγαγε δεδομένα για τη θέσηκαι την χρονολογίαν των λιμανιών της πόλης και για τις περιβαλλοντικές αλλαγές στηνεπικράτεια. Annual Turkish archaeological excavations and surveys (started in 1973,directed by Sait Bașaran for nearly 40 years, until 2019) have revealed several components ofthe chora (necropoleis, roads, fortifications). The geoarchaeological research, initiated byHelmut Brückner, Wolfgang Rabbel and Thomas Schmidts in 2011-2012, now continued inthe frame of a French international mission coordinated by Anca Dan, produced data for thelocation and evolution of the city’s lagoonal harbours as well as for the environmentalchanges in the territory. In this paper, we will present the main results of our joint projectsabout the natural evolution of the Ainos promontory and Hebros delta, as well as about thehuman impact in the region.

33. Inverse Filtering of Magnetic Prospection Data - A Gateway to the Social Structure of Cucuteni-Tripolye Settlements?

Abstract

Magnetic mapping is a common method for investigating archaeological sites. Typically, the magnetic field data are treated with basic signal improving processing followed by image interpretation to derive the location and outline of archaeological objects. However, the magnetic maps can yield more information; we present a two-step automatized interpretation scheme that enables us to infer the social structure from the magnetic map. First, we derive the magnetization distribution via inverse filtering by assuming a constant depth range for the building remains. Second, we quantify the building remains in terms of their total magnetic moment. In our field example, we consider this quantity as a proxy of household prosperity and its distribution as a social indicator. The inverse filtering approach is tested on synthetic data and cross-checked with a least-squares inversion. An extensive modeling study highlights the influence of depth and thickness of the layer for the filter construction. We deduce the rule of thumb that by choosing a rather too deep and too thick a layer, errors are smaller than for layers too low and too thin. The interpretation scheme is applied to the magnetic gradiometry map of the Chalcolithic Cucuteni–Tripolye site Maidanetske (Ukraine) that comprises the anomalies of about 2300 burned clay buildings. The buildings are arranged along concentric ellipses around an inner vacant space and a vacant ring. Buildings along this ring corridor have increased total magnetic moments. The total magnetic moment indicates the remaining building material and therefore the architecture. Lastly, architecture can reflect economic or social status. Consequently, the increased magnetic moment of buildings along the ring corridor indicates a higher economic or social status. The example of Maidanetske provides convincing evidence that the inversion of magnetic data and the quantification of buildings in terms of their magnetic moments enables the investigation of

Abstract

Manors are an important component of the cultural-economic history of Northern Germany and Southern Scandinavia. We present the results of a geophysical prospection that led to the identification of a previously unknown manor near the village of Noer, Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. Although magnetic gradiometry provides a fast way to cover large areas, it does not provide accurate depth estimates, is affected by magnetic blanking and is unable to detect differences in water content. Therefore, we applied a combination of different geophysical methods to optimize the non-invasive reconstruction of the target and its surroundings not only with respect to building structures but also in relation to the surrounding landscape. In particular, a combination of magnetics, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic induction (EMI), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and soil samples were carried out to determine: (1) the object's exact location; (2) the building structure and state of preservation; and (3) any additional structures in the surrounding area. We detected a tripartite building of 22 by 27 m, with several inner walls, which was located underneath a topographic high on the surveyed field. The bulk structure is identifiable most clearly in the magnetic and EMI inphase component maps. GPR profiles and soil samples indicate flooring or foundations in part of the building. Their shallow depths of less than 2 m below the surface and debris clusters close to the surface indicate at least partial demolition. A surrounding wall was found about 5 m outside the building. The area in between shows no magnetic anomalies, lower resistivities in EMI and ERT, and low GPR reflection amplitudes. Soil samples suggest a moat or other water feature. Archaeological artifacts found at the location characterize the building as a 16th to 17th century brick manor. Other objects, like a suspected farmyard and access path could not be found. Abstract

International audience; The archaeological research started in Ainos in 1971-1972, under the direction of Arfif Erzen;it continued during 1978-1993, with the participation of Sait Bașaran, who directed theresearch from 1994 until 2019. During these decades, Ainos transformed itself from a simpletoponym, known from some ancient literary and epigraphic texts, published from the 19 thcentury onwards, to one of the best known archaeological sites in European Turkey. Thenearby Hoça Keșme, discovered by Sait Bașaran and his family and excavated by MehmetÖzdoğan, is now the most important Neolithic site in SE Europe. Ainos’ Greek, Roman andEarly Byzantine funerary zones (the so-called Çakıllık, the Su Terazisi and the Taşaltınecropoleis), excavated in very difficult conditions, due to the rising water table, have filledtwo rooms with exceptional finds in the Edirne Museum. Enez’s Kale (“Acropolis”) revealedthe traces of the oldest Greek habitation and is now open to the public, with a fully restored“Fatih” or “Hagia Sophia” Mosque.Sait Bașaran put Ainos on the map of the studies on Thrace, publishing or co-publishingnearly all the important historical and archaeological studies about this area. He opened hisexcavation to international and interdisciplinary projects, supported by the DeutscheForschungsgemeinschaft (SPP Häfen; 2012-2017) and by the French National ResearchFoundation and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mission d’Ainos; 2017-2021), whichmade significant progress in identifying Ainos’ topography, in particular the harbours andtheir chronology, from Greek Antiquity to late Ottoman times. Geoelectric profiles combinedwith geomagnetic and georadar surveys gave hints for the shape of two ancient harbourbasins, besides several other anchoring points. The sediment cores in the basins as well as onformer beaches show the evolution of the ancient maritime gulf south of Ainos into the Taşaltıand Dalyan lagoons. Through geochemical analyses, combined with the study of pollen andmicrofauna, our team was able to reconstruct the ecological history of these lagoons, and toidentify and date the human actions which transformed them first into harbours and later intosimple fishing basins.In this paper, we present a survey of the most important archaeological and geoarchaeologicalfinds and hypotheses concerning Ainos: after a general presentation of the historical andarchaeological data about the city (with a particular focus on the Roman time), we try toreconstruct the city’s connectivity, by discussing the Roman roads and harbour evidence,including the preliminary results of the 2021 campaign.

Abstract

The determination of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of archaeological features can be used for magnetic modelling, joining of shards, archaeomagnetic dating or the investigation of the firing–cooling–collapsing order of ancient buildings. The measurement of NRM is normally conducted on cylindrical or cubic samples in the laboratory. Nevertheless, archaeological finds should preferably not be destroyed, and laboratory instruments are high in costs. Therefore, we propose a lightweight and portable measurement set‐up including already available field magnetometers (preferably caesium magnetometers) in which the archaeological sample of arbitrary shape, in our case a piece of daub, is mounted inside a gimbal to be rotated in all directions. The magnetic field of the sample is measured at a large number of rotational positions with the magnetometer kept at fixed position. In these measurements, the unknown direction of the NRM vector of the sample is rotated, whereas the average magnetic susceptibility of the sample and the ambient magnetic field are constant and known. Hence, the vector of NRM can be determined through least‐squares inversion. For the inversion computation, the sample volume is discretized either as voxel model or approximated as an equivalent sphere. Under certain conditions depending on sample–sensor distance, dipole moment and radius of the sample, the approximation by a sphere is valid without effect on the accuracy of results. Empirically determined functions quantifying these conditions for different sensor sensitivities and noise levels are provided. Validation with laboratory measurements on palaeomagnetic subsamples from the destroyed daub samples indicate that the NRM can be determined by our proposed method with a maximum error in inclination of 2°, in declination of 20° and in magnetization of ±0.6 A/m. Abstract

Before the closing of its lagoons and the progradation of the Hebros delta, Ainos took advantage of an almost insulate position, which made it one of the main hubs between the Greek Aegean and the Thracian hinterland. Annual Turkish archaeological excavations (since 1973) and international geoarchaeological research (since 2011) have revealed several components of the polis’ territory (necropoleis, roads, anchoring sites, fortifications) and offered information about the ecological impact of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman occupation on the natural environment. The campaigns of the last three years – organized through the cooperation of the German Universities of Cologne and Kiel with the French CNRS and the Turkish Ministry of Culture in the project LEGECARTAS (Lectures géoarchéologiques des cartes anciennes) – brought more light on the use of the city’s shores. We are now able to point to a precise location for the main harbour of the city (based on literary sources, geomorphological and geophysical evidence). We can also formulate scenarios for the use of the lagoons at the SE and NE of the city as fisheries and salines (by comparing them with other sites, studied by archaeologists on the shores of the Mediterranean and of the Atlantic, and by suggesting identifications with the names transmitted by ancient and medieval sources). This paper will present a short synthesis of these recent hypotheses, which can serve as a basis for the reconstruction of Ainos’ environmental history.
