We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantitatively assess the association between DR-TB and tobacco smoking.Methods: We searched for relevant studies in the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WANFANG, and WEIPU databases from inception to September 1, 2017. Results were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with accompanying 95% CIs, and subgroup analyses were performed by study design, smoking type, DR-TB type, and multivariate analysis.Results: Thirty-three studies related to tobacco smoking and DR-TB were included. We found substantial evidence that tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk of DR-TB (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.33–1.86). Associations were also found in subgroup analyses: for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.19–1.86) and for any DR-TB (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.3–2.23); the pooled OR was 1.45 (95% CI 1.11–1.90) for current smoking, 2.25 (95% CI 1.46–3.47) for past smoking, and 1.56 (95% CI 1.22–1.98) for smoking history; and similar ORs were also observed in study design and multivariate analysis subgroup analysis.Conclusion: This study demonstrated that tobacco smoking is an independent risk factor for DR-TB. Objective: Sialic acids frequently occur at the terminal positions of glycoprotein N-glycans present at chondrocyte surfaces or in the cartilage matrix. Sialic acids are transferred to glycoproteins in either alpha-2,3 or alpha-2,6 linkage by specific sialyltransferases (SiaTs) and can potentially affect cell functions and cell-matrix interactions. The present study aimed to assess the relationship between the expression of the human chondrocyte phenotype and the sialylation of chondrocyte glycoprotein N-glycans.Methods: The transcription of 5 SiaT was quantified using real-time Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays. N-glycan analysis was performed using LC-ESI-MS. Primary human chondrocytes were cultured in monolayer or alginate beads and compared to the chondrocyte cell lines C-28/I2 and SW1353. In addition, effects of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) or tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) on primary cells were assessed.Results: Primary human chondrocytes predominantly express alpha-2,6-specific SiaTs and accordingly, alpha-2,6-linked sialic acid residues in glycoprotein N-glycans. In contrast, the preponderance of alpha-2,3-linked sialyl residues and, correspondingly, reduced levels of alpha-2,6-specific SiaTs are associated with the altered chondrocyte phenotype of C-28/I2 and SW1353 cells. Importantly, a considerable shift towards alpha-2,3-linked sialic acids and alpha-2,3-specific SiaT mRNA levels occurred in primary chondrocytes treated with IL-1beta or tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha).Conclusion: The expression of the differentiated chondrocyte phenotype is linked to the ratio of alpha-2,6- to alpha-2,3-linked sialic acids in chondrocyte glycoprotein N-glycans. Objective: To compare the effects of glucosamine (GlcN), curcumin, and diacerein in immortalized human C-28/I2 chondrocytes at the cellular and the gene expression level. This study aimed to provide insights into the proposed beneficial effects of these agents and to assess the applicability of the C-28/I2 cell line as a model for the evaluation of chondroprotective action.Methods: Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta)-stimulated C-28/I2 cells were cultured in the presence of GlcN, curcumin, and diacerein prior to the evaluation of parameters such as viability, morphology and proliferation. The impact of GlcN, curcumin, and diacerein on gene expression was determined using quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qPCR).Results: At the transcriptional level, 5 mM GlcN and 50 microM diacerein increased the expression of cartilage-specific genes such as aggrecan (AGC) and collagen type II (COL2), while reducing collagen type I (COL1) mRNA levels. Moreover, the IL-1beta-mediated shift in gene expression pattern was antagonized by GlcN and diacerein. These effects were associated with a significant reduction in cellular proliferation and the development of chondrocyte-specific cell morphology. In contrast, curcumin was not effective at lower concentrations but even damaged the cells at higher amounts.Conclusions: Both GlcN and diacerein promoted a differentiated chondrocytic phenotype of immortalized human C-28/I2 chondrocytes by altering proliferation, morphology, and COL2/COL1 mRNA ratios. Moreover, both agents antagonized inhibitory effects of IL-1beta by enhancing AGC and COL2 as well as by reducing COL1 mRNA levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pro-form of caspase-8 prevents necroptosis by functioning in a proteolytically active complex with its catalytic-dead homolog, FLICE (FADD [Fas-associated death domain]-like interleukin 1β-converting enzyme)-like inhibitory protein long-form (FLIP L ). However, how FLIP L imparts caspase-8 the catalytic activity to suppress necroptosis remains elusive. Here, we show that the protease-like domain of FLIP L is essential for the activity of the caspase-8-FLIP L heterodimer in blocking necroptosis. While substitution of two amino acids whose difference may contribute to the pseudo-caspase property of FLIP L with the corresponding amino acids in caspase-8 does not restore the protease activity of FLIP L , one of the amino acid replacements, tyrosine (Y) 362 to cysteine (C), is sufficient to completely abolish the activity of the caspase-8-FLIP L heterodimer in cleaving receptor-interacting protein 1 (RIP1), thus releasing the necroptosis blockade. Unconstrained necroptosis is observed in embryonic day (E)10.5-E11.5 embryos of FLIP L -Y362C knockin mice. Persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) can achieve autofluorescence-free afterglow imaging, while near-infrared (NIR) emission realizes deep tissue imaging. Nanozymes integrate the merits of nanomaterials and enzyme-mimicking activities with simple preparation. Here PLNPs are prepared of Zn 1.2 Ga 1.6 Ge 0.2 O 4 :Cr 0.0075 with NIR emission at 700 nm. The PLNPs are then incubated with IrCl 3 solution, and the nanoparticles are collected and annealed at 750 °C to obtain iridium@PLNPs. Iridium is observed on the PLNPs at the atomic level as a single-atom nanozyme with peroxidase-like catalytic activity, photothermal conversion, and computed tomography (CT) contrast capability. After coating with exosome membrane (EM), the Ir@PLNPs@EM composite exhibits long-lasting NIR luminescence, peroxidase-like catalytic activity, photothermal conversion, and CT contrast capability, with the targeting capability and biocompatibility from EM. Thus, NIR afterglow/photothermal/CT trimodal imaging-guided photothermal-chemodynamic combination therapy is realized as validated with the in vitro and in vivo inhibition of tumor growth, while toxicity and side effects are avoided as drug-free treatment. The design of molecular functional materials with multi-step magnetic transitions has attracted considerable attention. However, the development of such materials is still infrequent and challenging. Here, a cyano-bridged square Prussian blue complex that exhibits a thermally induced four-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) is reported. The magnetic and spectroscopic analyses confirm this multi-step transition. Variable-temperature infrared spectrum suggested the electronic structures in each phase and a four-step transition model is proposed.

As a remote and non-contact stimulus, light offers the potential for manipulating the polarization of ferroelectric materials without physical contact. However, in current research, the non-contact write-read (erase) process lacks direct observation through the stable current as output signal. To address this limitation, we investigated the photoinduced polarization switching capabilities of the cyanide-bridged compound [Fe 2 Co] using visible light, leading to the achievement of rewritable polarization. By subjecting [Fe 2 Co] crystals to alternating irradiation with 785 nm and 532 nm light, the polarization changes exhibited a distinct square wave pattern, confirming the reliability of the writing and erasing processes. Initialization involved exposing specific crystal units to 532 nm light for storing "1" or "0" information, while reading was accomplished by scanning the units with 785 nm light, resulting in brief current pulses for "1" states and no current signal for "0" states. This research unveils new possibilities for optical storage systems, paving the way for efficient and rewritable data storage and retrieval technologies, such as the next-generation memories., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Formic acid (HCOOH) is a highly energy efficient product of the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Bismuth-based catalysts have shown promise in the conversion of CO 2 to formic acid, but there is still a great need for further improvement in selectivity and activity. Herein, we report the preparation of Bi nanosheets decorated by cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO x ) with high Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio and rich oxygen vacancies. The CeO x nanoparticles affect the electronic structures of bismuth, enhance CO 2 adsorption, and thus promote the CO 2 RR properties of Bi nanosheets. Compared with elemental Bi nanosheets, the hetero-structured CeO x /Bi nanosheets exhibit much higher activity over a wide potential window, showing a current density of 16.1 mA cm -2 with a Faradaic efficiency of 91.1% at -0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Coagulation disorders are common in Kawasaki disease (KD). The main objectives of the present study were to probe the associations of coagulation profiles with clinical classification, IVIG responsiveness, coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) in the acute episode of KD. A total of 313 KD children were recruited and divided into six subgroups, including complete KD (n = 217), incomplete KD (n = 96), IVIG-responsive KD (n = 293), IVIG-nonresponsive KD (n = 20), coronary artery noninvolvement KD (n = 284) and coronary artery involvement KD (n = 29). Blood samples were collected within 24-h pre-IVIG therapy and 48-h post-IVIG therapy. Coagulation profiles, conventional inflammatory mediators and blood cell counts were detected. Echocardiography was performed during the period from 2- to 14-day post-IVIG infusion. In addition, 315 sex- and age-matched healthy children were enrolled as the controls. (1) Before IVIG therapy, coagulation disorders were more prone to appear in KD patients than in healthy controls, and could be overcome by IVIG therapy. FIB and DD significantly increased in the acute phase of KD, whereas reduced to normal levels after IVIG therapy. (2) PT and APTT were significantly longer in patients with complete KD when compared with their incomplete counterparts after IVIG therapy. (3) The larger δDD, δFDP and the smaller δPT, δINR predicted IVIG nonresponsiveness. (4) The higher δDD and δFDP correlated with a higher risk for CAAs (DD: r = -0.72, FDP: r = -0.54). Superconductivity in a highly correlated kagome system has been theoretically proposed for years (refs.  1-5 ), yet the experimental realization is hard to achieve 6,7 . The recently discovered vanadium-based kagome materials 8 , which exhibit both superconductivity 9-11 and charge-density-wave orders 12-14 , are nonmagnetic 8,9 and weakly correlated 15,16 . Thus these materials are unlikely to host the exotic superconductivity theoretically proposed. Here we report the discovery of a chromium-based kagome metal, CsCr 3 Sb 5 , which is contrastingly featured with strong electron correlations, frustrated magnetism and characteristic flat bands close to the Fermi level. Under ambient pressure, this kagome metal undergoes a concurrent structural and magnetic phase transition at 55 K, with a stripe-like 4a 0 structural modulation. At high pressure, the phase transition evolves into two transitions, possibly associated with charge-density-wave and antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave orderings. These density-wave-like orders are gradually suppressed with pressure and, remarkably, a superconducting dome emerges at 3.65-8.0 GPa. The maximum of the superconducting transition temperature, T c max  = 6.4 K, appears when the density-wave-like orders are completely suppressed at 4.2 GPa, and the normal state exhibits a non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, reminiscent of unconventional superconductivity and quantum criticality in iron-based superconductors 17,18 . Diversity, a hallmark of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling, partly stems from alternative splicing of a single gene generating more than one isoform for a receptor. Additionally, receptor responses to ligands can be attenuated by desensitization upon prolonged or repeated ligand exposure. Both phenomena have been demonstrated and exemplified by the deuterostome tachykinin signaling system, although the role of phosphorylation in desensitization remains a subject of debate. Here, we describe the signaling system for tachykinin-related peptides (TKRPs) in a protostome, mollusk Aplysia. We cloned the Aplysia TKRP precursor, which encodes three TKRPs (apTKRP-1, apTKRP-2a, and apTKRP-2b) containing the FXGXR-amide motif. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry showed predominant expression of TKRP mRNA and peptide in the cerebral ganglia. TKRPs and their posttranslational modifications were observed in extracts of central nervous system ganglia using mass spectrometry. We identified two Aplysia TKRP receptors (apTKRPRs), named apTKRPR-A and apTKRPR-B. These receptors are two isoforms generated through alternative splicing of the same gene and differ only in their intracellular C termini. Structure-activity relationship analysis of apTKRP-2b revealed that both C-terminal amidation and conserved residues of the ligand are critical for receptor activation. C-terminal truncates and mutants of apTKRPRs suggested that there is a C-terminal phosphorylation-independent desensitization for both receptors. Moreover, apTKRPR-B also exhibits phosphorylation-dependent desensitization through the phosphorylation of C-terminal Ser/Thr residues. Purpose: This study aims to assess the accuracy of three parameters (white-to-white distance [WTW], angle-to-angle [ATA], and sulcus-to-sulcus [STS]) in predicting postoperative vault and to formulate an optimized predictive model., Methods: In this retrospective study, a cohort of 465 patients (comprising 769 eyes) who underwent the implantation of the V4c implantable Collamer lens with a central port (ICL) for myopia correction was examined. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and classification models were used to predict postoperative vault. The influences of WTW, ATA, and STS on predicting the postoperative vault and ICL size were analyzed and compared., Results: The dataset was randomly divided into training (80%) and test (20%) sets, with no significant differences observed between them. The screened variables included only seven variables which conferred the largest signal in the model, namely, lens thickness (LT, estimated coefficients for logistic least absolute shrinkage of -0.20), STS (-0.04), size (0.08), flat K (-0.006), anterior chamber depth (0.15), spherical error (-0.006), and cylindrical error (-0.0008). The optimal prediction model depended on STS (R 2 =0.419, RMSE=0.139), whereas the least effective prediction model relied on WTW (R 2 =0.395, RMSE=0.142). In the classified prediction models of the vault, classification prediction of the vault based on STS exhibited superior accuracy compared to ATA or WTW., Conclusions: This study compared the capabilities of WTW, ATA, and STS in predicting postoperative vault, demonstrating that STS exhibits a stronger correlation than the other two parameters., (© 2024. Topological band theory has conventionally been concerned with the topology of bands around a single gap. Only recently non-Abelian topologies that thrive on involving multiple gaps were studied, unveiling a new horizon in topological physics beyond the conventional paradigm. Here, we report on the first experimental realization of a topological Euler insulator phase with unique meronic characterization in an acoustic metamaterial. We demonstrate that this topological phase has several nontrivial features: First, the system cannot be described by conventional topological band theory, but has a nontrivial Euler class that captures the unconventional geometry of the Bloch bands in the Brillouin zone. Second, we uncover in theory and probe in experiments a meronic configuration of the bulk Bloch states for the first time. Third, using a detailed symmetry analysis, we show that the topological Euler insulator evolves from a non-Abelian topological semimetal phase via. the annihilation of Dirac points in pairs in one of the band gaps. With these nontrivial properties, we establish concretely an unconventional bulk-edge correspondence which is confirmed by directly measuring the edge states via. pump-probe techniques. Our work thus unveils a nontrivial topological Euler insulator phase with a unique meronic pattern and paves the way as a platform for non-Abelian topological phenomena., (Copyright © 2024 Science China Press. We have experimentally investigated the mechanism of the exchange bias in 2D van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets by means of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) together with the dynamical magnetization property. The temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility with its frequency response indicates a glassy transition of the magnetic property for the Te-rich FeGeTe vdW ferromagnet. We also found that the irreversible temperature dependence in the anomalous Hall voltage follows the de Almeida-Thouless line. Moreover, the freezing temperature of the spin-glass-like phase is found to correlate with the disappearance temperature of the exchange bias. These important signatures suggest that the emergence of magnetic exchange bias in the 2D van der Waals ferromagnets is induced by the presence of the spin-glass-like state in FeGeTe. The unprecedented insights gained from these findings shed light on the underlying principles governing exchange bias in vdW ferromagnets, contributing to the advancement of our understanding.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) have the characteristics of resistance to environmental degradation, bioaccumulation and long-distance migration potential. Maternal exposure to POPs during pregnancy can enter the fetal blood circulation through the placental barrier, and have a potential impact on the functional development of the nervous system of the offspring. This in turn leads to the occurrence and development of neurological defects and diseases in adulthood. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the effects of exposure to three major POPs (organochlorine compounds, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) during pregnancy on the functional development of the nervous system (social emotions, cognition, language, exercise, and adaptability) in children, and to provide reference for subsequent studies.

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) including famous catenanes show switchable physical properties and attract continuous research interest due to their potential application in molecular devices. The advantages of using spin crossover (SCO) materials here are enormous, allowing for control through diverse stimuli and highly specific functions, and enabling the transfer of the internal dynamics of MIMs from solution to solid state, leading to macroscopic applications. Herein, we report the efficient self-assembly of catenated metal-organic frameworks (termed catena-MOFs) induced by stacking interactions, through the combination of rationally selected flexible and conjugated naphthalene diimide-based bis-pyridyl ligand (BPND), [M I (CN) 2 ] - (M = Ag or Au) and Fe 2+ in a one-step strategy. The obtained bimetallic Hofmann-type SCO-MOFs [Fe II (BPND){Ag(CN) 2 } 2 ]·3CHCl 3 (1Ag) and [Fe II (BPND{Au(CN) 2 } 2 ]·2CHCl 3 ·2H 2 O (1Au) possess a unique three-dimensional (3D) catena-MOF constructed from the polycatenation of two-dimensional (2D) layers with hxl topology. Both complexes undergo thermal- and light-induced SCO. Significantly, abnormal increases in the maximum emission intensity and dielectric constant can be detected simultaneously with the switching of spin states. Objective: To examine the efficacy and experience of staged and segmented two hybrid surgeries for total repair of Debakey type Ⅰ aortic dissection (TIAD). Methods: This study was a retrospective case series. The clinic data of 10 patients with acute TIAD who were admitted to the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Second Hospital of Lanzhou University or the First People's Hospital of Lanzhou, between January 2016 and August 2022, were retrospectively studied. Ten patients underwent hybrid surgeries in two hospitalizations (stages), including 7 males and 3 females with an age of (60±7) years (range: 49 to 71 years). In stage 1, the first type Ⅱ hybrid arch repair was performed to treat the ascending, total arch, and descending thoracic aorta for acute TIAD without circulatory arrest. In stage 2, the second hybrid surgery including infrarenal abdominal aorta replacement, visceral arteries bypass and endovascular thoracoabdominal aortic repair was performed to treat residual thoracoabdominal aortic dissection after the first hybrid operation (segmented). Basic data, preoperative concomitant diseases, high-risk factors, surgical approaches and postoperative complications of all important organs, as well as CT imaging were analyzed. Results: There was no death in the 20 hybrid surgical procedures. In stage 1 type Ⅱ hybrid surgery, 4 cases underwent reconstruction of the aortic sinutubular junction, while Bentall and David surgery was performed for 3 cases, respectively. A patient received coronary artery bypass grafting. Then all patients were sequentially treated with arch debranching and thoracic aortic endovascular repair. Postoperative complications included renal insufficiency (4/10), hemofiltration (1/10), hypoxemia (4/10), neurologic event (1/10) and type Ⅱ endoleak (1/10). Complete false lumen thrombosis occurred in 9/10 of the patients. All complications recovered successfully at discharge and the average hospital stay was (21±4) days (range: 16 to 28 days) in the first hospitalization. At stage 2, the second hybrid surgery was successfully performed in all patients. No paraplegia, hepatic or renal insufficiency, or endoleak occurred. However, branch graft embolism of the left renal artery was found in one patient 3 days after laparotomy, as well as of superior mesenteric artery in another. Superior mesenteric artery occlusion was successfully treated by endovascular recanalization. Complete false lumen thrombosis occurred in all patients. Although all patients had different degrees of intestinal dysfunction, they were gradually relieved at discharge, and the average hospital stay was (19±2)days (range:16 to 21 days) in the second hospitalization. During follow-up, CT angiography showed aortic remodeling in all patients. Conclusion: Staged and segmented two hybrid surgeries are safe and feasible for total repair of Debakey type Ⅰ aortic dissection and are associated with acceptable early and midterm outcomes.

Topological materials and metamaterials opened new paradigms to create and manipulate phases of matter with unconventional properties. Topological D-class phases (TDPs) are archetypes of the ten-fold classification of topological phases with particle-hole symmetry. In two dimensions, TDPs support propagating topological edge modes that simulate the elusive Majorana elementary particles. Furthermore, a piercing of π-flux Dirac-solenoids in TDPs stabilizes localized Majorana excitations that can be braided for the purpose of topological quantum computation. Such two-dimensional (2D) TDPs have been a focus in the research frontier, but their experimental realizations are still under debate. Here, with a novel design scheme, we realize 2D TDPs in an acoustic crystal by synthesizing both the particle-hole and fermion-like time reversal symmetries for a wide range of frequencies. The design scheme leverages an enriched unit cell structure with real-valued couplings that emulate the targeted Hamiltonian of TDPs with complex hoppings: A technique that could unlock the realization of all topological classes with passive metamaterials. In our experiments, we realize a pair of TDPs with opposite Chern numbers in two independent sectors that are connected by an intrinsic fermion-like time-reversal symmetry built in the system. We measure the acoustic Majorana-like helical edge modes and visualize their robust topological transport, thus revealing the unprecedented D and DIII class topologies with direct evidence. Our study opens up a new pathway for the experimental realization of two fundamental classes of topological phases and may offer new insights in fundamental physics, materials science, and phononic information processing., (Copyright © 2024 Science China Press. Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands ( SS -cth and RR -cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS -cth ligand and those with the RR -cth ligand are canceled out. To obtain a polar compound, the Co valence tautomeric complex with SS -cth in the homo metal Co crystal is replaced with the Ga complex with SS -cth by mixing Co valence tautomeric complexes with RR -cth and Ga complexes with SS -cth. The CoGa crystal exhibits polarization switching between the pseudononpolar state at a low temperature and the polar state at a high temperature because only Co complexes exhibit changes in electric dipole moment due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Following the same strategy, the polarization-switchable CoZn complex was synthesized. The CoZn crystal exhibits polarization switching between the polar state at a low temperature and the pseudononpolar state at a high temperature, which is the opposite temperature dependence to that of the CoGa crystal. These results revealed that the polar crystal can be synthesized by design, using a chiral ligand. Moreover, our method allows for the control of temperature-dependent polarization changes, which contrasts with typical ferroelectric compounds, in which the polar ferroelectric phase typically occurs at low temperatures.

Thiram is a toxic fungicide extensively used for the management of pathogens in fruits. Although it is known that thiram degrades in plant tissues, the key enzymes involved in this process remain unexplored. In this study, we report that a tau class glutathione S-transferase (GST) from Carica papaya can degrade thiram. This enzyme was easily obtained by heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, showed low promiscuity toward other thiuram disulfides, and catalyzed thiram degradation under physiological reaction conditions. Site-directed mutagenesis indicated that G-site residue S67 shows a key influence for the enzymatic activity toward thiram, while mutation of residue S13, which reduced the GSH oxidase activity, did not significantly affect the thiram-degrading activity. The formation of dimethyl dithiocarbamate, which was subsequently converted into carbon disulfide, and dimethyl dithiocarbamoylsulfenic acid as the thiram degradation products suggested that thiram undergoes an alkaline hydrolysis that involves the rupture of the disulfide bond. Application of the GST selective inhibitor 4-chloro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole reduced papaya peel thiram-degrading activity by 95%, indicating that this is the main degradation route of thiram in papaya. GST from Carica papaya also catalyzed the degradation of the fungicides chlorothalonil and thiabendazole, with residue S67 showing again a key influence for the enzymatic activity. We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of a novel ternary compound, Th 2 Cu 4 As 5 . The material crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 4.0639(3) Å and c = 24.8221(17) Å. Its structure can be described as an alternating stacking of fluorite-type Th 2 As 2 layers with antifluorite-type double-layered Cu 4 As 3 slabs. The measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat reveals that Th 2 Cu 4 As 5 undergoes bulk superconducting transition at 4.2 K. Additionally, all these physical quantities exhibit anomalies at 48 K, accompanied by a sign change in the Hall coefficient, suggesting a charge-density-wave-like (CDW) phase transition. Drawing from both experimental data and band calculations, we propose that the superconducting and CDW-like phase transitions are, respectively, associated with the Cu 4 As 3 slabs and the As plane in the Th 2 As 2 layers.

Spin-crossover (SCO) materials exhibit remarkable potential as bistable switches in molecular devices. However, the spin transition temperatures ( T c ) of known compounds are unable to cover the entire ambient temperature spectrum, largely limiting their practical utility. This study reports an exemplary two-dimensional SCO solid solution system, [Fe III (H 0.5 L Cl ) 2 - 2 x (H 0.5 L F ) 2 x ]·H 2 O (H 0.5 L X = 5- X -2-hydroxybenzylidene-hydrazinecarbothioamide, X = F or Cl, x = 0 to 1), in which the adjacent layers are adhered via hydrogen bonding. Notably, the T c of this system can be fine-tuned across 90 K (227-316 K) in a linear manner by modulating the fraction x of the L F ligand. Elevating x results in strengthened hydrogen bonding between adjacent layers, which leads to enhanced intermolecular interactions between adjacent SCO molecules. Single-crystal diffraction analysis and periodic density functional theory calculations revealed that such a special kind of alteration in interlayer interactions strengthens the Fe III N 2 O 2 S 2 ligand field and corresponding SCO energy barrier, consequently resulting in increased T c . This work provides a new pathway for tuning the T c of SCO materials through delicate manipulation of molecular interactions, which could expand the application of bistable molecular solids to a much wider temperature regime.

Purpose: To use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to accurately predict vault and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) size., Methods: The methodology focused on enhancing predictive capabilities through the fusion of machine-learning algorithms. Specifically, AdaBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Support Vector Regression, LightGBM, and XGBoost were integrated into a majority-vote model. The performance of each model was evaluated using appropriate metrics such as accuracy, precision, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC)., Results: The majority-vote model exhibited the highest performance among the classification models, with an accuracy of 81.9% area under the curve (AUC) of 0.807. Notably, LightGBM (accuracy = 0.788, AUC = 0.803) and XGBoost (ACC = 0.790, AUC = 0.801) demonstrated competitive results. For the ICL size prediction, the Random Forest model achieved an impressive accuracy of 85.3% (AUC = 0.973), whereas XG-Boost (accuracy = 0.834, AUC = 0.961) and LightGBM (accuracy = 0.816, AUC = 0.961) maintained their compatibility., Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of diverse machine learning algorithms to enhance postoperative vault and ICL size prediction, ultimately contributing to the safety of ICL implantation procedures. Furthermore, the introduction of the novel majority-vote model demonstrates its capability to combine the advantages of multiple models, yielding superior accuracy. Importantly, this study will empower ophthalmologists to use a precise tool for vault prediction, facilitating informed ICL size selection in clinical practice. Background: Correction of the crooked nose, especially the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, has the potential to cause skull base injury. At present, the safe and effective method for perpendicular plate resection has not been clearly defined through biomechanics., Method: CT scan data of 48 patients with crooked nose and deviated nasal septum were divided into C-type, angular deformity-type, and S-type based on the morphology of the 3D model. Different types of finite element models of the nasal bony septum and skull base were established. The osteotomy depth, angle, and force mode of the PPE resection were simulated by assembling different working conditions for the models. The von Mises stress of the anterior cranial fossa was observed., Results: When the osteotomy line length was 0.5 cm, the angle was at 30° to the Frankfurt plane, and 50 N·mm torque was applied, the von Mises stress of the skull base was minimal in the four models, showing 0.049 MPa (C-type), 0.082 MPa (S-type), 0.128 MPa (angular deformity-type), and 0.021 MPa (control model). The maximum von Mises stress values were found at the skull base when the osteotomy line was 1.5 cm, the angle was 50°, and the force was 10 N along the X-axis, showing 0.349 MPa (C-type), 0.698 MPa (S-type), 0.451 MPa (angular deformity-type), and 0.149 MPa (control model)., Conclusion: The use of smaller resection angle with the Frankfurt plane, conservative resection depth, and torsion force can better reduce the stress value at the skull base and reduce the risk of basicranial fracture. ITA and Beast methods were used to quantitatively analyze the nonlinear process of a PM 2.5 concentration time series based on the PM 2.5 concentration data of the three major urban agglomerations in China. The results showed that： ① the degree of the PM 2.5 pollution in the three major urban agglomerations had decreased， and the high-concentration areas had noticeably shrunk. The degree of spatial polarization of PM 2.5 concentration was reduced， and the spatial difference was narrowed. The PM 2.5 concentration in most areas showed downward trends， but the degree of change was not the same. Compared with the YRD and PRD， the concentration of PM 2.5 in the BTH was still at a relatively high level. ② The concentration of PM 2.5 in the three major urban agglomerations had seasonal variation characteristics that were high in winter and spring and low in summer and autumn. There were obvious differences in PM 2.5 concentration between winter and summer， and the convergence of PM 2.5 concentration in summer was greater than that in winter. Areas with high PM 2.5 concentration also had obvious downward trends， but the downward trends of PM 2.5 concentration in the PRD were not obvious compared with those in the YRD and BTH. ③ The PM 2.5 concentration time series of the three major urban agglomerations all had significant downward trends： Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei （BTH） > the Yangtze River Delta （YRD） > the Pearl River Delta （PRD）. The PM 2.5 concentration had the largest downward trends in winter. The higher the PM 2.5 pollution level， the greater the downward trends. ④ The trend component of the PM 2.5 concentration time series in the BTH had two change points， and there was one change point in the seasonal component. The trend and seasonal components of the PM 2.5 concentration time series in the YRD had no change point. There was no change point in the seasonal component but one change point in the trend component of the PM 2.5 concentration time series in the PRD. These results can provide scientific references for regional air pollution control.

Light-induced polarization switchable molecular materials have attracted attention for decades owing to their potential remote manipulation and ultrafast responsiveness. Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

Background: The scarcity of drugs targeting AML cells poses a significant challenge in AML management. Z-Ligustilide (Z-LIG), a phthalide compound, shows promising pharmacological potential as a candidate for AML therapy. However, its precise selective mechanism remains unclear., Purpose: In order to assess the selective inducement effects of Z-LIG on ferroptosis in AML cells and explore the possible involvement of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in the regulation of ferroptosis., Methods: Through in vitro cell proliferation and in vivo tumor growth tests, the evaluation of Z-LIG's anticancer activity was conducted. Ferroptosis was determined by the measurement of ROS and lipid peroxide levels using flow cytometry, as well as the observation of mitochondrial morphology. To analyze the iron-related factors, western blot analysis was employed. The up-regulation of the Nrf2/HO-1 axis was confirmed through various experimental techniques, including CRISPR/Cas9 gene knockout, fluorescent probe staining, and flow cytometry. The efficacy of Z-LIG in inducing ferroptosis was further validated in a xenograft nude mouse model., Results: Our study revealed that Z-LIG specifically triggered lipid peroxidation-driven cell death in AML cells. Z-LIG downregulated the total protein and nuclear entrance levels of IRP2, resulting in upregulation of FTH1 and downregulation of TFR1. Z-LIG significantly increased the susceptibility to ferroptosis by upregulating ACSL4 levels and simultaneously suppressing the activity of GPX4. Notably, the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway displayed a twofold impact in the ferroptosis induced by Z-LIG. Mild activation suppressed ferroptosis, while excessive activation promoted it, mainly driven by ROS-induced labile iron pool (LIP) accumulation in AML cells, which was not observed in normal human cells. Additionally, Nrf2 knockout and HO-1 knockdown reversed iron imbalance and mitochondrial damage induced by Z-LIG in HL-60 cells. Background: Pyroptosis is an inflammatory type of programmed cell death, and could overcome the drug-resistance induced by anti-apoptotic effect of cancers. Carvedilol (CVL), a β-adrenergic receptors antagonist, has shown anti-inflammatory response and anti-cancer effect. The aim of this study is to investigate whether pyroptosis can be activated by CVL in prostate cancer (PCa)., Methods and Results: Datasets were used to analyze the expressions of pyroptosis-related proteins. Intracellular morphological change, cell viability, LDH and Il-1β release by cells,, and Hoechst/PI staining were used to detect the occurrence of pyroptosis. Realtime-PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to investigate the expressions of pyroptosis-related proteins. Datasets analyze showed the expressions of NLRP3, Caspase 1, ASC and GSDMD were all decreased in PCa comparing with normal tissues, but without prognostic significance. CVL treatment weakened the viabilities of PCa cells. Cell morphology changing, cytoplasmic vacuole formation, membrane integrity loss, LDH and IL-1β release and PI positive cells increasing were observed. NLRP3, Caspase 1, ASC, GSDMD and N-GSDMD expressions were elevated after CVL treatment, accompanied by a tendency of NF-κB transferring into nucleus. In vivo, CVL inhibited the growth of subcutaneous transplanted tumor. IHC showed CVL increased the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, and GSDMD, and decreased the expression of Ki-67 in transplanted tumor tissues., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that CVL could induce pyroptosis in PCa cells through NLRP3-caspase1-ASC inflammasome by promoting nuclear translocation of NF-κB, which would lay a foundation for the application of adrenergic receptor antagonist in PCa., (© 2024. Light, a nondestructive and remotely controllable external stimulus, effectively triggers a variety of electron-transfer phenomena in metal complexes. One prime example includes using light in molecular cyanide-bridged [FeCo] bimetallic Prussian blue analogues, where it switches the system between the electron-transferred metastable state and the system's ground state. If this process is coupled to a ferroelectric-type phase transition, the generation and disappearance of macroscopic polarization, entirely under light control, become possible. In this research, we successfully executed a nonpolar-to-polar phase transition in a trinuclear cyanide-bridged [Fe 2 Co] complex crystal via directional electron transfer. Intriguingly, by exposing the crystal to the wavelength of light─785 nm─without any electric field─we can drive this ferroelectric phase transition to completely depolarize the crystal, during which a measurable electric current response can be detected. These discoveries signify an important step toward the realization of fully light-controlled ferroelectric memory devices.

Thirteen new Euphorbia diterpenoids, euphylonanes A-M ( 1 - 13 ), and eight known ones were isolated from the whole plants of Euphorbia hylonoma . Compounds 1 and 2 are two rearranged ingenanes bearing a rare 6/6/7/3-fused ring system. Compound 3 represents the first example of a 9,10-epoxy tigliane, while 4 - 21 are typical ingenanes varying with substituents. Structures were elucidated using a combination of spectroscopic, computational, and chemical methods. Most ingenanes exerted a significant antiadipogenic effect in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, among which 4 was the most active with an EC 50 value of 0.60 ± 0.27 μM. Mechanistic study revealed that 4 inhibited the adipogenesis and lipogenesis in adipocytes via activation of the AMPK signaling pathway.

Based on the PM 2.5 concentration and meteorological data of "2+26" cities, the variations in PM 2.5 time series were analyzed by the continuous wavelet transform(CWT) and discrete wavelet transform(DWT). Wavelet coherence(WTC) and multiple wavelet coherence(MWC) were used to quantify the response relationship between PM 2.5 and single/multiple meteorological factors in the time-frequency domain. Partial wavelet coherence(PWC) was used to quantitatively evaluate the influence of atmospheric teleconnection factors on the response relationship. The results showed that:① the concentration of PM 2.5 in the "2+26" cities had the spatial distribution characteristics of high in the middle area and low in the peripheral area. The PM 2.5 mutation events were mainly concentrated before 2018 and mostly occurred in winter when the meteorological conditions were stable. The annual scale period of 256-512 d was relatively stable, and it was also the dominant period of the PM 2.5 time series. ② The coherences between PM 2.5 and meteorological factors depended on the time-frequency scale and variable combination. At all time-frequency scales, PM 2.5 had strong coherences with relative humidity and temperature. At small and medium time-frequency scales, PM 2.5 had strong coherences with wind speed. At large scales, PM 2.5 had strong coherences with temperature. The combination of precipitation, temperature, and relative humidity could explain the variation in PM 2.5 at all time-frequency scales. ③ At different time-frequency scales, the enhancement/weakening effects of atmospheric teleconnection factors on the response relationship were not the same. At all time-frequency scales, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) had a greater impact on the response relationship between PM 2.5 and precipitation/temperature, and the Pacific decadal oscillation(PDO) had a greater impact on the response relationship between PM 2.5 and relative humidity/wind speed. These results provide reference for regional air pollution control.

Purpose: To compare astigmatic correction among cross-assisted small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (transPRK)., Setting: The Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Zhejiang, China., Design: Prospective comparison study., Methods: 154 right eyes of 154 patients with astigmatism of -1.00 to -2.75 diopters (D) were included in this study. 64 eyes, 42 eyes, and 48 eyes were receiving SMILE, FS-LASIK, and transPRK, respectively. The SMILE group used cross-axial alignment for head positioning for astigmatism correction. In the FS-LASIK and transPRK groups, static and dynamic cyclotorsion control were used. Changes in ocular parameters and vector analysis were assessed at 6 months postoperatively., Results: The safety and efficacy indices were comparable among the 3 groups at 6 months postoperatively. Residual astigmatism was smallest in the SMILE group (-0.23 ± 0.25 D) compared with that in FS-LASIK (-0.40 ± 0.28 D, P = .009) and transPRK groups (-0.42 ± 0.32 D, P = .001). 53 (82.8%), 36 (85.7%), and 37 (77.1%) eyes achieved an angle of error within ±5 degrees, respectively ( P = .55). Notably, vector analysis showed that the difference vector, the magnitude of the error, and its absolute value were significantly smaller in the SMILE group than those in the other groups ( P < .05). In addition, the higher-order aberrations, especially coma, were significantly induced postoperatively in each group ( P < .001)., Conclusions: Residual astigmatism magnitude was smallest by cross-assisted SMILE, followed by FS-LASIK and transPRK, and the astigmatism axial correction was comparable among groups., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). A pair of undescribed dihydrobenzofuran neolignan enantiomers, (+/-)-phybrenan A ( 1a / 1b ), two new benzofuran neolignans, phybrenan B and C ( 2 and 3 ), along with four known neolignans ( 4  -  7 ) were obtained from the plants of Phyllanthodendron breynioides P. T. Li. The planar structures of all isolates were demonstrated by the analysis of detailed spectroscopic evidence (NMR, HRMS, and IR), and the absolute configurations of novel neolignans were elucidated by combined calculated and experimental ECD data analysis. The neuroprotective activities of all benzofuran neolignans against sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced cell death were examined in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. The results exhibited that three compounds ( 4  -  6 ) possessed remarkable neuroprotective activities at 10  µ M, better than the positive drug edaravone.

Dendrobium huoshanense is an important Traditional Chinese medicine that thickens the stomach and intestines. Its active ingredient Dendrobium huoshanense polysaccharide (DHP), was revealed to relieve the symptoms of liver injury. However, its mechanism of action remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of DHP in protecting the liver. The effects of DHP on lipid levels, liver function, and intestinal barrier function were investigated in mice with high-fat diet-induced liver damage. Changes in the gut flora and their metabolites were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics. The results showed that DHP reduced lipid levels, liver injury, and intestinal permeability. DHP altered the intestinal flora structure and increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium animalis and Clostridium disporicum. Furthermore, fecal metabolomics revealed that DHP altered fecal metabolites and significantly increased levels of gut-derived metabolites, spermidine, and indole, which have been reported to inhibit liver injury and improve lipid metabolism and the intestinal barrier. Correlation analysis showed that spermidine and indole levels were significantly negatively correlated with liver injury-related parameters and positively correlated with the intestinal species B. animalis enriched by DHP. Overall, this study confirmed that DHP prevented liver injury by regulating intestinal microbiota dysbiosis and fecal metabolites., (© 2023 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

To coordinate the contradiction between economic development and environmental pollution and achieve the sustainable development of the economy and society, the spatio-temporal variations in PM 2.5 were analyzed based on PM 2.5 concentration and meteorological data of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) urban agglomeration. Wavelet transform coherence (WTC), partial wavelet coherence (PWC), and multiple wavelet coherence (MWC) were used to analyze the multi-scale coupling oscillation between PM 2.5 and meteorological factors in the time-frequency domain. The results showed that:① the concentration of PM 2.5 in the YRD decreased from northwest to southeast, and the spatial range with high PM 2.5 concentration decreased annually. The spatial distribution characteristics of the seasonal average PM 2.5 concentration were similar to those of the annual average PM 2.5 concentration. PM 2.5 concentration exhibited the seasonal variation characteristics of high in winter, low in summer, and transitioning between spring and autumn. ② PM 2.5 concentration decreased from 2015 to 2021, and the compliance rate increased. The difference in annual average PM 2.5 concentration was decreased with dynamic convergence characteristics. The convergence of PM 2.5 concentration in summer was greater than that in winter. During the whole study period, the daily average PM 2.5 concentration showed a "U" distribution, and the proportion of days with excellent and good PM 2.5 levels were 49.72% and 41.45%, respectively. ③ The wavelet coherence between PM 2.5 and meteorological factors was different in different time-frequency domains. The main factors affecting PM 2.5 were different in different time-frequency scales. At all time-frequency scales, WTC and PWC showed that wind speed and temperature were the best explanatory variables of PM 2.5 variation, respectively. ④ The larger the time-frequency scale, the stronger the interaction of multi-factor combinations to explain PM 2.5 variations. The synergistic effect of temperature and wind speed could better explain the variation in PM 2.5 . These results can provide reference for air pollution control in the YRD.

Ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric compounds whose electric polarization properties can be controlled by external stimuli such as electric field, temperature, and pressure have various applications, including ferroelectric memory materials, sensors, and thermal energy-conversion devices. Numerous polarization switching compounds, particularly molecular ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics, have been developed. In these materials, the polarization switching usually proceeds via ion displacement and reorientation of polar molecules, which are responsible for the change in ionic polarization and orientational polarization, respectively. Recently, the development of electronic ferroelectrics, in which the mechanism of polarization change is charge ordering and electron transfer, has attracted great attention. In this article, representative examples of electronic ferroelectrics are summarized, including (TMTTF) 2 X (TMTTF = tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene, X = anion), α -(BEDT-TTF) 2 I 3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene), TTF-CA (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, CA = p -chloranil), and [( n -C 3 H 7 ) 4 N][Fe III Fe II (dto) 3 ] (dto = 1,2-dithiooxalate = C 2 O 2 S 2 ). Molecular-based magnetoelectric materials are among the most promising materials for next-generation magnetoelectric memory devices. However, practical application of existing molecular systems has proven difficult largely because the polarization change is far lower than the practical threshold of the ME memory devices. Herein, we successfully obtained an [FeCo] dinuclear complex that exhibits a magnetic field-induced spin crossover process, resulting in a significant polarization change of 0.45 μC cm -2 . Mössbauer spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that the asymmetric structural change, coupled with electron redistribution, leads to the observed polarization change. Our approach provides a new strategy toward rationally enhancing the polarization change.

To alleviate the energy and environmental crisis, in the last decades, energy harvesting by utilizing optical control has emerged as a promising solution. Here we report a polar crystal that exhibits photoenergy conversion and energy storage upon light irradiation. The polar crystal consists of dinuclear [CoGa] molecules, which are oriented in a uniform direction inside the crystal lattice. Irradiation with green light induces a directional intramolecular electron transfer from the ligand to a low-spin Co III centre, and the resultant light-induced high-spin Co II excited state is trapped at low temperature, realizing energy storage. Additionally, electric current release is observed during relaxation from the trapped light-induced metastable state to the ground state, because the intramolecular electron transfer in the relaxation process is accompanied with macroscopic polarization switching at the single-crystal level. It demonstrates that energy storage and conversion to electrical energy is realized in the [CoGa] crystals, which is different from typical polar pyroelectric compounds that exhibit the conversion of thermal energy into electricity., (© 2023. The application of single-crystal neutron diffraction (SCND) to observe proton-transfer phenomena in crystalline compounds exhibiting unusual protonation states or proton dynamics has garnered significant research interest in recent years. However, proton tautomerism, which results in different protonation states before and after proton transfer, has never been observed using the SCND technique. Thus, to observe the proton tautomerism phenomenon by SCND measurements, we developed an iron(II) complex that forms a large crystal and exhibits a proton-transfer-coupled spin transition (PCST). The presence of the two types of proton tautomers was determined by conventional analysis of the proton position by X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Finally, our results confirmed that proton tautomerism was successfully observed for the first time using variable-temperature SCND measurements.
