They were divided into the long duration group (n = 57) and short duration group (n = 28) based on postoperative medication duration. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed and compared between the cohorts.Results: No significant difference in RFS or OS was found between the two groups [RFS: hazard ratio (HR) = 0.486; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.229– 1.034, P = 0.061; OS: HR = 0.377; 95% CI, 0.119– 1.196, P = 0.098]. Patients without major pathologic response (MPR) in the long duration group had better RFS and OS results compared to those in the short duration group (RFS: HR = 0.242; 95% CI, 0.092– 0.634, P = 0.004; OS: HR = 0.264; 95% CI, 0.079– 0.882, P = 0.031). No significant difference was detected in RFS or OS between the two groups in patients with MPR (RFS: HR = 1.250; 95% CI, 0.373– 4.183, P = 0.718; OS: HR = 7.389; 95% CI, 0.147– 372.4, P = 0.317). After propensity score matching, 25 pairs of patients were selected and the results remained consistent.Conclusion: At least 6 months of adjuvant therapy may be beneficial for patients without MPR after conversion surgery. However, in patients with MPR, the effect of adjuvant therapy remains unclear. Melanoma is the most malignant tumor of all skin cancers; it is the most metastatic and, therefore, the most difficult to treat. The main purpose of this study is to develop nanovesicles with tumor cell membrane secretion properties to encapsulate target substances to enhance the therapeutic effect of cancer.Methods: Astaxanthin was selected as an anticancer drug due to our previous research finding that astaxanthin has extremely high antioxidant, anti-ultraviolet damage, and anti-tumor properties. The manufacturing method of the astaxanthin nanovesicle carrier is to mix melanoma cells and astaxanthin in an appropriate ratio and then remove the genetic material and inflammatory factors of cancer cells by extrusion.Results: In terms of results, after the co-culture of astaxanthin nanovesicles and melanoma cancer cells, it was confirmed that the ability of astaxanthin nanovesicles to inhibit the growth and metastasis of melanoma cancer cells was significantly better than the same amount of astaxanthin alone, and it had no effect on normal Human cells are also effective. There was no apparent harm on normal cells, indicating the ability of the vesicles to be selectively transported.Conclusion: Our findings illustrated the potential of astaxanthin nanovesicles as an anticancer drug. One-to-one propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to minimize the influence of potential confounders. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were compared between the surgical group and the non-surgical group.Results: Before PSM, 45 patients received salvage hepatectomy, and 29 patients received nonsurgical treatment. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year DFS rates were 77.8%, 61.5%, and 61.5% in the surgical group and 81.2%, 60.9%, and 60.9% in the non-surgical group, respectively. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS rates were 92.9%, 92.9%, and 69.7% in the surgical group and 100%, 70%, and 70% in the non-surgical group, respectively. There were no statistical differences in DFS and OS between groups [hazard ratio (HR)=0.715, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.250– 2.043, p=0.531; HR=0.980, 95% CI: 0.177– 5.418, p=0.982, respectively]. After PSM, 26 pairs of patents were selected; there remained no significant differences in DFS and OS between these two groups (HR=1.547, 95% CI: 0.512– 4.669, p=0.439; HR=1.024, 95% CI: 0.168– 6.242, p=0.979, respectively).Conclusion: Through the study, it tend to show that salvage hepatectomy may be not essential for uHCC patients with cCR, especially for patients with a high risk of surgical complications. Prospective trials with long term follow-up are warranted to evaluate this treatment option.Plain Language Summary: To date, there is limited evidence on the prognosis of the unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) patients with clinical complete response (cCR), and the necessity of salvage surgery remains controversial. In this study, they compare and evaluate therapeutic benefits of salvage hepatectomy and nonsurgical treatment in the management of uHCC patients with cCR after conversion therapy. Finally, a total of 74 consecutive uHCC patients with cCR after conversion therapy at seven major cancer centers in China were included. There were no statistically significant differences for disease-free survival and overall survival were observed before and after propensity score matching. They revealed that cCR after conversion therapy led to a good prognosis for patients with uHCC. However, the benefits of this triple therapy remain unclear. Thus, this study evaluated whether the combination of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), lenvatinib, and programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors (triple therapy) was effective and safe for unresectable HCC with main trunk portal vein tumor thrombus (Vp4).Patients and Methods: This study enrolled patients receiving triple therapy at four institutions between August 2018 and April 2022. Patient characteristics and course of treatment were extracted from patient records. Tumors and tumor thrombus response were evaluated using an HCC-specific modified RECIST. Kaplan–Meier curve analysis demonstrated overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Adverse events (AEs) were evaluated according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 5.0.Results: Median follow-up duration was 18 (4.0– 26.3) months. Overall, 41 patients with HCC and Vp4 receiving first-line triple therapy were enrolled. The intrahepatic tumor objective response rate was 68.3%. The median OS was 21.7 (range, 2.8– 30.5) months, whereas the median PFS was 14.5 (range, 1.3– 27.6) months. Twelve patients received sequential resections. Resection was independently associated with favorable OS and PFS. Fever (31.7%), hypertension (26.8%), fatigue (24.4%), abnormal liver function (63.4%) and decreased appetite (21.9%) were the AEs frequently associated with treatment. No treatment-related mortality occurred.Conclusion: TACE plus lenvatinib and PD-1 inhibition was effective and tolerable for treating unresectable HCC with Vp4, with a high tumor response rate and favorable prognosis.Keywords: transarterial chemoembolization, lenvatinib, programmed death 1 inhibitor, hepatic cellular carcinoma, main trunk portal vein, triple therapy

This study explored the prognostic role of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin (DCP) levels in patients with uHCC receiving triple therapy.Patients and Methods: This retrospective study included 93 patients with uHCC who received triple therapy at Fujian Provincial Hospital between August 2020 and November 2022. Depending on the respective baseline levels, the patients were divided into high-AFP and high-DCP groups. An early response was defined as an AFP or DCP concentration > 50% less than the baseline concentration after 6 weeks of triple therapy. The primary endpoint was the objective response rate (ORR). The secondary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).Results: After 6 weeks of triple therapy, 75.3% (58/77) and 78.9% (60/76) of patients in the high-AFP and high-DCP groups achieved an objective response. Early AFP and DCP responses were positively associated with ORR (high-AFP group: odds ratio [OR]: 13.542; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.991– 45.950, p< 0.001; high-DCP group: OR: 17.853; 95% CI: 4.478– 71.179, p< 0.001). In the high-AFP group, the 6-month, 12-month, and 18-month PFS and OS rates were higher in the AFP responders than those in the non-responders (PFS: 66.4%, 59.6%, 48.2% vs 42.3%, 19.3%, 0%, p< 0.001; OS: 94.5%, 90.4%, 77.3% vs 75.6%, 66.2%, 49.6%, p=0.006). In the high-DCP group, the 6-month, 12-month, and 18-month PFS and OS rates were higher in the DCP responders than those in the non-responders (PFS: 67.4%, 57.7%, 39.0% vs 38.9%, 8.1%, 0%, p< 0.001; OS: 94.7%, 94.7%, 83.3% vs 77.0%, 53.9%, 36.0%, p< 0.001).Conclusion: After 6 weeks of triple therapy, an AFP or DCP reduction of > 50% predicts better treatment outcomes in uHCC patients.Keywords: unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, alpha-fetoprotein, des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin, combination therapy, tumor response

However, the association between psychological resilience and mental health in NGNSs is less explored.Purpose: The current study was designed to determine mental health profiles measured by the Kessler 10 scale (K10) and evaluate the non-linear association between psychological resilience and mental health in NGNSs.Methods: A total of 472 NGNSs from the Be Resilient to Nursing Career program were assessed using the K10 and ten-item Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10). Latent profile analysis and generalized additive model analysis were performed.Results: A four-class model based on the K10 was identified: lowest (28.0%), lower-middle (36.4%), upper-middle (26.1%), and highest (9.5%) subgroups. Academic degree and psychological resilience were significant indicators of mental health profiles. Psychological resilience was negatively and nonlinearly correlated with mental health when the CD-RISC 10 score was > 17.Conclusion: There exists heterogeneity in NGNSs’ mental health. The negative and nonlinear association between psychological resilience and mental health can only be confirmed in NGNSs with moderate and high resilience levels.Keywords: psychological resilience, mental health, latent profile analysis, generalized additive model analysis, newly graduated nursing students

We assessed the safety and clinical efficacy of triple therapy [LEN+PD-1+transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE)] in uHCC.Methods: uHCC patients with an ECOG PS score of 0– 1 and Child–Pugh class A who underwent triple therapy were included. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) based on mRECIST. Secondary endpoints were conversion rate to liver resection and treatment-related adverse events.Results: Between November 2018 and December 2020, 62 uHCC patients who underwent triple therapy at four major cancer centers in China were analyzed, including 35 in BCLC-C, 21 in BCLC-B, and 6 in BCLC-A. With a median follow-up of 12.2 months (range, 7.6– 33.3 months), the investigator and blinded independent central review-assessed ORR were 80.6% and 77.4%, respectively. A total of 33 patients (53.2%) reached the standard of conversion to resectable HCC and 29 patients underwent resection. The median interval between start of triple therapy and resection was 123 days (range, 55– 372 days). Pathological complete response and major pathological response were observed in 16 and 24 patients, respectively. Median overall survival and progression-free survival were not reached. Treatment-related adverse events occurred in 74.2% of the patients (grade ≥ 3, 14.5%; grade ≥ 4, 4.8%).Conclusion: Combination of LEN, PD-1 and TACE showed a high rate of tumor response and convert resection in uHCC patients, with manageable toxicity.Keywords: unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, tumor response, adverse events, combination therapy, monotherapy

To improve the pharmaceutical properties of BTM, BTM loaded PEG-PE micelles (BTM@PEG-PE) were fabricated and its anti-cancer efficacy against colon cancer was evaluated.Methods: BTM@PEG-PE micelles were prepared by the solvent evaporation method and were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), size, zeta potential, polymer disperse index (PDI) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cellular uptake, cell viability assay, caspase-3 activity assay and flow cytometry were performed to evaluate the cell internalization and anti-cancer efficacy of BTM@PEG-PE micelles in vitro. Pharmacokinetic profiles of BTM and BTM@PEG-PE micelles were compared and in vivo anti-cancer therapeutic efficacy and safety of BTM@PEG-PE micelles on CT26 xenograft mice were evaluated.Results: BTM was successfully embedded in the core of PEG-PE micelles, with a drug loading capacity of 5.62±0.80%. PEG-PE micelles facilitated BTM entering to the CT26 cells and BTM@PEG-PE micelles exerted enhanced anti-cancer efficacy against CT26 cells. BTM@PEG-PE micelles showed prolonged half-life and increased bioavailability. The 10-year CVD risk was also estimated by applying the Chinese model recommended by the Chinese Guidelines for Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases.Results: The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia among older adults was 56.8%. The prevalence of high total cholesterol (TC), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and high triglyceride (TG) were 8.4%, 13.9%, 23.1% and 11.4%, respectively. The mean levels of TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were 5.12±1.18, 3.37±0.81, 1.03±0.27 and 1.65±0.76 mmol/L, respectively. Older adults had low risk, moderate risk and high risk for CVD, which were 49.7%, 36.8% and 13.5%, respectively. Age, body mass index and abdominal obesity were significantly associated with the risk of increasing LDL-C levels and were positively correlated to CVD risk.Conclusion: The prevalence of high TC, high LDL-C, low HDL-C and high TG was relatively low among older adults in Quanzhou, but their lipid levels were high. Approximately half of the elderly adults had moderate or high CVD risk. Both water-in-oil (W/O) IPC-NE and oil-in-water (O/W) IPC-NE were formulated and evaluated for comparison.Results: The obtained W/O IPC-NE and O/W IPC-NE were both spherical in shape with a mean particle size of 18.6±0.79 nm and 27.3±1.25 nm, respectively. While both IPC-NEs exhibited enhanced Caco-2 cell monolayers permeability than IPC and insulin solution, W/O IPC-NE showed relatively greater protective effects against enzymatic degradation than O/W IPC-NE. Moreover, oral administration of W/O IPC-NE exhibited significant hypoglycemic effects, with 12.4-fold and 1.5-fold higher oral bioavailability compared with insulin solution and O/W IPC-NE, respectively.Conclusion: IPC-NEs, especially the W/O IPC-NE showed promising efficiency in vitro and in vivo, thus could be a potential strategy for oral insulin delivery.Keywords: insulin, phospholipid complex, oral drug delivery, nanoemulsion, hypoglycemic effect

Methods: Microemulsions (MEs) and chitosan derivative-coated 8-MOP MEs were developed and compared for dermal delivery of 8-MOP. Ex vivo skin retention/permeation study was performed to select the ME formulation with the highest retention:permeation ratio. Four different chitosan-coated MEs were prepared and compared with the ME formulation for their ability to distribute 8-MOP in the skin.Results: Among various ME formulations developed, a formulation containing 2.9% ethyl oleate, 17.2% Cromophor EL35, 8.6% ethanol and 71.3% water showed the highest ex vivo skin retention:permeation ratio (1.98). Of four chitosan-coated MEs prepared, carboxymethyl chitosan-coated MEs (CC-MEs) and hydroxypropyl chitosan-coated MEs (HC-MEs) showed higher ex vivo skin retention:permeation ratio (1.46 and 1.84). and were selected for in vivo pharmacokinetic study. AUCskin (0–12 h) for 8-MOP MEs (4578.56 h·ng·mL-1) was higher than HC-MEs (3422.47 h·ng·mL-1), CC-MEs (2808.51 h·ng·mL-1) and tincture (1500.16 h·ng·mL-1). Also, AUCplasma (0–12 h) for MEs (39.35±13.90 h·ng·mL-1) was significantly lower than HC-MEs (66.32 h·ng·mL-1), CC-MEs (59.70 h·ng·mL-1) and tincture (73.02 h·ng·mL-1).Conclusion: These combined results suggested that the MEs developed could be a promising and safe alternative for targeted skin delivery of 8-MOP. All subjects completed self-reported self-perception of mental illness questionnaires (Birchwood Insight Scale [BIS], Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness [ISMI]), subjective cognitive functioning (Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia [SSTICS]) and objective cognitive functioning (Luria Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery [LNNB]).Results: Spearman’s rank analysis showed that awareness of illness (domain of insight) was positively associated with most domains of SSTICS and ISMI. Total insight was positively correlated with alienation (domain of ISMI). Need for treatment (domain of insight) was negatively correlated with stigma resistance (domain of ISMI). Awareness of symptoms (domain of insight) and total insight were negatively associated with receptive speech and arithmetic (LNNB subtest), respectively. ISMI was positively correlated with most domains of SSTICS, but not with LNNB. The group with good insight had higher scores in attention (domain of SSTICS) and total SSTICS and alienation, stereotype endorsement, social withdrawal (domains of ISMI) and total ISMI than the group with poor insight. The group with mild to moderate internalized stigma had higher scores in explicit memory, attention, language, praxia (domains of SSTICS) and total SSTICS than the group with no internalized stigma.Conclusion: We identified that awareness of illness (domain of insight), internalized stigma were significantly associated with most domains of SSTICS, but not with LNNB. Total insight and awareness of symptoms (domain of insight) were significantly associated with receptive speech and arithmetic (LNNB subtest), respectively. Schizophrenia with higher insight or more internalized stigma reported more subjective cognitive impairment. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association of LN with management and pregnancy outcomes in SLE patients.Methods: Embase, Medline, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov were carefully searched for relevant English and Chinese language studies. A total of 2,987 articles were reviewed. Data were extracted that compared management and pregnancy outcomes in SLE pregnant women with LN vs without LN. Risk of bias was assessed by a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the STROBE checklist. Combined odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained and sensitivity analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software.Results: Sixteen studies, including 1,760 pregnant patients with SLE, were included. Gestational hypertension (OR=5.65, 95% CI=2.94–10.84), preeclampsia (OR=2.84, 95% CI=1.87–4.30), SLE flare (OR=2.66, 95% CI=1.51–4.70), renal flare (OR=15.18, 95% CI=5.89–39.14), proteinuria (OR=8.86, 95% CI=4.75–16.52), and hypocomplementemia (OR=2.86, 95% CI=1.68–4.87) were significantly affected in pregnant women with LN. Anti-Sjögren’s syndrome-related antigen A/Ro autoantibodies were negatively associated with pregnant women with LN (OR=0.57, 95% CI=0.33–0.98). Pregnant women with LN presented a significant decrease in live births (OR=0.62, 95% CI=0.49–0.80) and a significant increase in preterm births (OR=1.92, 95% CI=1.49–2.49) and fetal growth restriction (OR=1.43, 95% CI=1.08–1.91). Regarding antenatal management, steroids (OR=2.48, 95% CI=1.59–3.87) and immunosuppressant treatment (OR=6.77, 95% CI=3.30–13.89) were more frequently used in women with LN.Conclusion: This review identified a significant association between the aforementioned outcomes and SLE pregnant patients with LN. In patients with SLE, LN increased the risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes and the use of medication. Therefore, special treatment and close monitoring should be allocated to pregnant women with LN. Although it was recently confirmed that FTY720 inhibits cancer cell proliferation, FTY720 can also induce protective autophagy and reduce cytotoxicity. Blocking autophagy with Beclin 1 siRNA after treatment with FTY720 promotes apoptosis. The objective of this study was to enhance the anticancer effect of FTY720 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by targeted co-delivery of FTY720 and Beclin 1 siRNA using calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles (NPs).Materials and methods: First, the siRNA was encapsulated within the CaP core. To form an asymmetric lipid bilayer structure, we then used an anionic lipid for the inner leaflet and a cationic lipid for the outer leaflet; after removing chloroform by rotary evaporation, these lipids were dispersed in a saline solution with FTY720. The NPs were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry. Cancer cell viability and cell death were analyzed by MTT assays, fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis and Western blotting. In addition, the in vivo effects of the NPs were investigated using an athymic nude mouse subcutaneous transplantation tumor model.Results: When the CaP NPs, called LCP-II NPs, were loaded with FTY720 and siRNA, they exhibited the expected size and were internalized by cells. These NPs were stable in systemic circulation. Furthermore, co-delivery of FTY720 and Beclin 1 siRNA significantly increased cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo compared with that caused by treatment with the free drug alone.Conclusion: The CaP NP system can be further developed for co-delivery of FTY720 and Beclin 1 siRNA to treat HCC, enhancing the anticancer efficacy of FTY720. Our findings provide a new insight into HCC treatment with co-delivered small molecules and siRNA, and these results can be readily translated into cancer clinical trials. The effect of each SLA-treated surface decorated with nanotubes (SLA + 30 nm, SLA + 50 nm, and SLA + 80 nm) on osteogenesis was studied in vitro and in vivo. The human MG63 osteosarcoma cell line was used for cytocompatibility evaluation, which showed that cell adhesion and proliferation were dramatically enhanced on SLA + 30 nm. In comparison with cells grown on the other tested surfaces, those grown on SLA + 80 nm showed an enhanced expression of osteogenesis-related genes. Cell spread was also enhanced on SLA + 80 nm. A canine model was used for in vivo evaluation of bone bonding. Histological examination demonstrated that new bone was formed more rapidly on SLA-treated surfaces with nanotubes (especially SLA + 80 nm) than on those without nanotubes. Similarly, although we have previously reported the increased in vitro uricolytic activity (about 2.2 times higher than that of free uricase, or three times higher than that of PEGylated uricase, Puricase®, under physiological pH and temperature) and improved stability of the novel alkaline enzymosomes (functional lipid vesicles encapsulating uricase from Candida utilis: uricase-containing lipid vesicles, UOXLVs), it is still necessary to study the biological properties and hypouricemic effects of UOXLVs in vivo.Methods: The enzyme kinetics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, immunogenicity, and preliminary safety of UOXLVs were evaluated.Results: The Michaelis constant (Km) value of the UOXLVs was slightly lower than that of the free enzyme. The enzyme release from the UOXLVs lasted over 12 hours and their circulation half-life was about sevenfold longer than that of the free uricase. Meanwhile, the UOXLVs had a 22-fold increase in the area under the curve compared with the free uricase. Furthermore, it took less than 3 hours for the UOXLVs to lower the plasma uric acid concentration from a high to a normal level, compared with 6 hours for the free uricase. In addition, the UOXLVs had much less immunogenicity than free uricase and were well tolerated by all animals throughout the observation period.Conclusion: The UOXLVs markedly improved the biological properties and enhanced the hypouricemic effects of uricase in vivo.Keywords: biological properties, hypouricemic effect, uricase, alkaline enzymosomes, in vivo

The steady rise in carbon emissions has significantly exacerbated the global climate crisis, posing a severe threat to ecosystems due to the greenhouse gas effect. As one of the most pressing challenges of our time, the need for an immediate transition to renewable energy is imperative to meet the carbon reduction targets set by the Paris Agreement. Buildings, as major contributors to global energy consumption, play a pivotal role in climate change. This study diverges from previous research by employing multi-task deep learning techniques to develop a predictive model for electricity load in commercial buildings, incorporating auxiliary tasks such as temperature and cloud coverage. Using real data from a commercial building in Taiwan, this study explores the effects of varying batch sizes (100, 125, 150, and 200) on the model's performance. The findings reveal that the multi-task deep learning model consistently surpasses single-task models in predicting electricity load, demonstrating superior accuracy and stability. These insights are crucial for companies aiming to enhance energy efficiency and formulate effective renewable energy procurement strategies, contributing to broader sustainability efforts and aligning with global climate action goals. We have compared the decay rates of KL and KS toΠ+ Π- Π0Π0 final states using a subset of the data from the KTeV experiment (E832) at Fermilab. We find that the direct-CP-violation parameter Re (μ’/μ) is equal to [28.0±3.0(stat)±2.8(syst)]×10-4. This result definitively establishes the existence of CP violation in a decay process. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

The effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on methane oxidation in landfill cover soils were examined. The batch experiments were conducted using single and mixed VOCs, such as, dichloromethane (DCM), trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and benzene. The results from all combinations showed a decrease in methane oxidation rate with increase in VOC concentrations. Moreover, inhibition effects of TCE and DCM were found higher than benzene and PCE. The reduction of methane oxidation by benzene and PCE could be attributed to the toxicity effect, whereas TCE and DCM were found to exhibit the competitive-inhibition effect. When the soil was mixed with DCM, no methane oxidation was found. Damage to the cell’s internal membrane was found in a methanotrophic culture exposed to VOC gases which is the attachment site of a key enzyme needed for methane oxidationOs efeitos dos compostos orgânicos voláteis (VOCs) na oxidação do metano em camadas superficiais do solo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos usando somente VOCs ou mistura do mesmo, como, diclorometano (DCM), tricloroetileno (TCE), tetracloroetileno (PCE), e benzeno. Os resultados de todas as combinações mostraram uma diminuição na taxa da oxidação do metano com aumento nas concentrações de VOC. Além disso, os efeitos da inibição de TCE e de DCM foram mais elevados do que do benzeno e PCE. A redução da oxidação do metano pelo benzeno e PCE poderia ser atribuída ao efeito da toxicidade, visto que TCE e DCM exibiram o efeito de competição-inibição. Quando o solo foi misturado com o DCM, nenhuma oxidação do metano foi encontrada. Three highway segments typical of urban, semiurban, and rural settings in the Piedmont region of North Carolina were monitored to characterize the respective runoff constituent concentrations and pollutant discharge or export loadings. Runoff from the impervious bridge deck (Site I) carried total suspended solids (TSSs) concentrations and loadings that are relatively higher than typical urban highways, whereas nitrogen and phosphorus loadings are similar to agricultural runoff. Site II included a pervious roadside shoulder with traffic volume equal to that of Site I. Site III was a nonurban highway having lower traffic counts and imperviousness due to the presence of a roadside median. The existing roadside shoulder and median appeared to attain at least 10-20% hydrologic attenuation of peak runoff discharges, more than 60% reduction of event mean concentration of TSSs, and attenuation of the first-flush concentrations for most pollutant constituents. Bulk precipitation data collected at the bridge deck site indicated that 20% of TSS loadings, 70-90% of nitrogen loadings, and 10-50% of other constituent exports from the roadway corridors might have originated from atmospheric deposition during dry and wet weather conditions. The long-term highway pollutant loadings have been derived to provide a basis for comparing highway runoff with other categories of nonpoint sources (NPSs).

The biological treatability of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) in drinking water was investigated under oligotrophic conditions. AOC of the simulated feed was provided with model compounds such as glucose, acetate, or glycerol at 1 mg[center dot]C/L. The bioreactors were initially inoculated with Pseudomonas fluorescens strain P17, an indigenous organism isolated from water-distribution systems, to initiate biological activity. Cell-immobilization techniques investigated consisted of entrapment in calcium (Ca) alginate beads and carrier-binding with Type-Z carrier. It was found that reactors packed with either alginate beads or Type-Z carrier were operational at stable conditions over a period of two years without any loss of metabolic functionality. Excellent removal of influent substrates was obtained by all reactor types at hydraulic retention times ranging from 6 to 30 min. Type-Z carrier appears to be the preferred choice of biocarrier because of its inorganic structure and simplicity of immobilization. The steady-state, average effluent AOC and total organic carbon (TOC) from bioreactors packed with Type-Z carrier ranged from 9 to 28 I[[micro]gram][center dot]C/L and from 0.23 to 0.32 mg[center dot]C/L, respectively, when the operating hydraulic retention times varied from 20 to 30 min. Maintaining a low level of AOC in finished water helps minimize microbial regrowth in a water-distribution system.

Three urban wet detention ponds in the Piedmont of North Carolina were monitored to investigate long-term pollutant removal as a function of surface to area ratios. Eleven storm events were monitored over a sampling period of 13 months. Urban runoff originating from the study area was characterized by event-mean concentrations for total suspended solids (135 mg/L), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (0.88 mg/L), total iron (6.11 mg/L), and total zinc (66 ug/L). Concentrations of copper and lead were consistently below the detection limits of 30 ug/L and 100 ug/L, respectively. The observed event-mean concentrations were generally lower than the national values reported by the Nationwide Urban Runoff Program. Particle sizes of sediment discharged in runoff were much finer than the national averages due to the predominant clayey soils in the region. This study demonstrates that surface to area ratio can be a useful predictor of wet pond performance. Utilizing 1-2% of the watershed area for the development of wet detention ponds at strategic locations could reduce pollutant loadings to meet targeted requirements of water quality improvement.

The maintenance and recovery of mental health in people with mental disorder is considered a sign of coping with adverse conditions. The purpose of the present meta-analysis was to examine the association between resilience and quality of life in individuals with mental disorders.Methods: Studies were included if research reported measures of association with resilience, as assessed using self-reported resilience scale and quality of life. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and PsycINFO.Results: Eight studies involving a total of 1439 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Assuming a random-effects model, the weighted mean Pearson correlation between resilience and quality of life was r = 0.551 (95% confidence interval [0.370; 0.691], p < 0.001). This association was moderate, although the heterogeneity among individual effect sizes was substantial (I2 = 93.35%).Conclusion: Despite substantial heterogeneity across included studies, the findings suggest a strong association between resilience and quality of life in people with mental disorders. In clinical practice, the promotion of resilience is important to enhance the quality of life among people with mental illness.Keywords: resilience, quality of life, mental health
