Abstract

Temperature-responsive luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have been fabricated in which the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between a donor-acceptor pair in a liquid crystalline solvent can be tuned. At room temperatures, the perylene bisimide (PBI) acceptor is aggregated and FRET is inactive; while after heating to a temperature above the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal solvent, the acceptor PBI completely dissolves and FRET is activated. This unusual temperature control over FRET was used to design a color-tunable LSC. The device has been shown to be highly stable towards consecutive heating and cooling cycles, making it an appealing device for harvesting otherwise unused solar energy.

Abstract

A terpyridine-functionalized perylene bisimide chromophore (TPBI) has been used as a building block in the stepwise, layer-by-layer fabrication of self-assembled Fe-TPBI multilayers on gold, with the assembled supramolecular chains oriented approximately perpendicular to the gold surface. Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements seem to indicate that the energy absorbed by the multilayer is promptly dissipated to the gold surface by ultrafast processes.

Abstract

Nanoassemblies are formed via self-assembly of ZnS capped CdSe quantum dots (QD) and perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes. Upon assembly formation the QD photoluminescence is quenched, as can be detected both via single particle detection and ensemble experiments in solution. Quenching has been assigned to FRET and NON-FRET processes. Analysis of FRET allows for a distinction between different geometries of the QD dye assemblies. Time-resolved single molecule spectroscopy reveals intrinsic fluctuations of the PBI fluorescence lifetime and spectrum, caused by rearrangement of the phenoxy side groups. The distribution of such molecular conformations and their changed dynamics upon assembly formation are discussed in the scope of FRET efficiency and surface ligand density.

Abstract

A bis(trialkoxybenzamide)-functionalized quaterthiophene derivative was synthesized and its self-assembly properties in solution were studied. In non-polar solvents such as cyclohexane, this quaterthiophene ?-system formed fibril aggregates with an H-type molecular arrangement due to synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding and ?-stacking. The self-assembled fibres were found to gelate numerous organic solvents of diverse polarity. The charge transport ability of such elongated fibres of quaterthiophene ?-system was explored by the pulse radiolysis time resolved microwave conductivity (PR-TRMC) technique and moderate mobility values were obtained. Furthermore, initial AFM and UV-vis spectroscopic studies of a mixture of our electron-rich quaterthiophene derivative with the electron acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) revealed a nanoscale segregated assembly of the individual building blocks in the blend., ChemE/Chemical Engineering, Applied Sciences

Abstract

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was applied in combination with optical absorption spectroscopy for studying the anchoring of polypyridine-based supramolecular layers on oxide surfaces, such as quartz or indium tin oxide, by means of a layer-by-layer method involving a self-assembly process relying on coordination interactions that lead to the formation, at the surface, of metal-complex-based layers. ToF-SIMS measurements were crucial in setting up the strategy for the preparation of the above systems, as they allowed a detailed monitoring of each preparation step and provided direct qualitative information on the successful anchoring at the surface. Optical measurements, on the other hand, provided quantitative information on the growth of the multilayers, beyond the thickness sampled by static-SIMS. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
