15. Detection of Field Coil Short-Circuit Fault in Synchronous Generators Based on Magnetic Bypass Shunt Effect

Abstract

The field coil short-circuit (FCSC) fault is a crucial factor that contributes to the severe vibration of the synchronous generators. The accurate detection of FCSC is of great significance as it facilitates a quicker confirmation and processing, and the key is to adopt a feasible real-time acquisition scheme for fault characteristics. According to the structural characteristics of the synchronous generator, we studied the magnetic bypass and shunt effect resulting from the structural components utilized to fix the stator core. A scheme of installing a magnetic flux detection coil on the back of the stator core of the synchronous generator was proposed. By analyzing the characteristic harmonics in the induced voltage of the detection coil, our proposed method is capable of detecting FCSC faults in the synchronous generator in real-time. A finite-element simulation model was established for a 334 MVA salient pole synchronous generator for method verification. The characteristic harmonic amplitudes of the induced voltages in the flux detection coil under different FCSC degrees were obtained. Also, several tests were conducted on a prototype synchronous generator with the type of MJF-30-6. The FCSC with varying fault degrees were simulated and the induced voltage signals of the flux detection coil were collected. Both simulation and test results validate our method in detecting the FCSC faults in synchronous generators. Additionally, our method also addresses the security concerns associated with sensor layout and offers a feasible solution for FCSC fault detection in synchronous generators.

Abstract

LaFe11.8Si1.2/10 wt%Ce60Co40composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering and subsequent diffusion annealing. A novel core–shell structure is observed with the LaFe11.8Si1.2particles as the core and the (La,Ce)2(Fe,Co,Si)17(2:17) phase as the shell. As diffusion annealing time (ta) increases, this core–shell structure is replaced by the formation of the (La,Ce)1(Fe,Co,Si)13phase. Annealing at 1323 K for 12 h results in samples with (−ΔSM)maxof 9.30 J/(kg·K) (Δμ0H = 2 T), good mechanical properties ((σbc)max = 402 MPa, ε = 4.21%) and thermal conductivity of 8.7 W/(m·K). Thus, bulk composites with excellent comprehensive properties for magnetic refrigeration are obtained in this work.

Abstract

The online monitoring of inter‐turn short‐circuit (ITSC) faults in excitation windings of pumped storage units is easily affected by static air‐gap eccentricity (SAGE) and armature response, and the early fault characteristics cannot be easily identified effectively. To address these problems, this study proposes a frequency‐resolved circulation spectrum (FRCS) fault diagnosis method for ITSC faults in excitation windings. Firstly, the equation for the same phase multi‐branch circulation under SAGE compound ITSC conditions is derived based on the structural characteristics of pumped storage units and electromagnetic induction relations, and obtains the characteristic harmonics of the loop current caused by ITSC faults. Secondly, this study introduces the implementation method of FRCS, considering a pumped storage unit with a generation capacity of 334 MVA as the research object. This study develops a two‐dimensional finite element simulation model, calculates the magnitude of the in‐phase branch circulation at different fault levels, extracts the corresponding time and frequency domain spectrum and FRCS, and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method based on comparative experiments. Finally, based on the MJF‐30‐6 Synchronous Generator Experimental Platform in the Power System Dynamic Simulation Laboratory, ITSC operation at different fault levels is simulated, and the corresponding in‐phase branch current data are collected for FRCS analysis. The experimental results demonstrate that the method can effectively eliminate SAGE and armature reaction interference, identify early weak ITSC faults and visualise the severity of faults in the form of pixel dots. Abstract

A series of LaFe11.8Si1.2/La65Co35bulk composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) followed by diffusion annealing. The effect of sintering temperature (1073–1223 K) on the magnetocaloric and other properties of LaFe11.8Si1.2/La65Co35bulk composites were investigated. The 1:13 phase content in all the annealed samples was ∼90 wt%. The mechanical and magnetocaloric properties of these annealed bulk composites could be improved by tuning the sintering temperature. The Curie temperature (TC) and maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM)maxof the annealed samples varied in the range of 211–228 K and 5.56–9.33 J kg−1 K−1, respectively. Selected samples exhibited excellent mechanical and magnetocaloric properties. The (−ΔSM)maxvalue was 9.33 J kg−1 K−1at TCof 217.8 K. Its maximum compressive strength (σbc)maxvalue was 540 MPa at a strain of 3.48%, which exceeded the mechanical properties of most La–Fe–Si based bulk composites prepared by hot-pressing sintering (HPS). Thus, La–Fe–Si based bulk composites with good comprehensive properties could be obtained by combining SPS and diffusion annealing.

Abstract

The rotating rectifier is prone to be damaged in the exciter of the brushless excitation system, wherein a diode open-circuit fault which is common can affect the normal and safe operations of a generator. On the basis of the structure of the brushless exciter, this study, analysed the effect that an open-circuit in one and two diodes had on armature current and armature field, and put forward a new online detection method for diode open-circuit fault. In this method, two magnetic field detection coils are installed on the stator iron yoke of the brushless exciter, and the open-circuit fault of the diodes can be reflected by the induced voltage difference of the two detection coils. Using a 16-pole, three-phase brushless exciter as an example, the performance of this new diagnosis method was verified by using a finite element simulation.
