This study examined the effects of an intervention that integrated peer-mediated instruction (PMI) with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) using speech-generating devices (SGDs). Nine trained peer tutors without disabilities taught science concepts and modeled use of SGDs following a script to three elementary school students with significant cognitive disabilities in Taiwan. Using a multiple baseline across participants design, results showed the PMI with AAC intervention was effective in improving participants' targeted science knowledge. In addition, participants increased their communicative interactions with peers and increased the use of different communication modes during the science experiment activities with the implementation of PMI with AAC, when compared to the communication responses during the general teaching strategy.

This case study describes the processes of functional analysis and modality assessment that were utilized to design a communication intervention for an adolescent with autism who engaged in loud and disruptive vocalizations for most of the school day. The functional analysis suggested that the vocalizations served both tangible and escape functions. The modality assessment suggested that the participant could use a speech-generating device to make requests for a preferred item. Results of the intervention suggested that functional communication training was useful in decreasing the frequency of vocalizations and increasing independent requesting in school and community settings. The results are discussed with regard to their implications for the treatment of stereotypic vocalizations and the limitations of the case study design. We also discuss the importance of international educational efforts related to the dissemination of evidence-based practices such as functional analysis and functional communication training. Abstract Background Hydrogen-rich saline has been reported to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and effectively protect against organ damage. Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to the pathogenesis and/or development of pulmonary hypertension. In this study, we investigated the effects of hydrogen-rich saline on the prevention of pulmonary hypertension induced by monocrotaline in a rat model. Methods In male Sprague-Dawley rats, pulmonary hypertension was induced by subcutaneous administration of monocrotaline at a concentration of 6 mg/100 g body weight. Hydrogen-rich saline (5 ml/kg) or saline was administred intraperitoneally once daily for 2 or 3 weeks. Severity of pulmonary hypertension was assessed by hemodynamic index and histologic analysis. Malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-desoxyguanosine level, and superoxide dismutase activity were measured in the lung tissue and serum. Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6) in serum were determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Hydrogen-rich saline treatment improved hemodynamics and reversed right ventricular hypertrophy. It also decreased malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-desoxyguanosine levels, and increased superoxide dismutase activity in the lung tissue and serum, accompanied by a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusions These results suggest that hydrogen-rich saline ameliorates the progression of pulmonary hypertension induced by monocrotaline in rats, which may be associated with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Chemical investigation of Dendrobium plicatile Lindl resulted in the isolation and identification of one new bibenzyl, 2-chloro-3, 4'-dihydroxy-3',5-dimethoxybibenzyl (1), as well as 15 known stilbenoids. The structures of this new compound was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including HRESIMS, 1H and 13C NMR, DEPT, HMBC, COSY, HMQC, NOESY. Compounds 2, 3 and 5 were obtained from this genus for the first time, compounds 8, 10, 13 and 14 were obtained from this plant for the first time. In addition, the new compound exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against the human breast cancer (MDA-MB231) cell line, the hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell line and the human lung carcinoma (A549) cell line, with IC50 3.41, 3.02, 2.80 μM, respectively.
