Using first-principles transport calculations, we predict that the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of single-crystal Co$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$ alloys is strongly dependent on the current orientation and alloy concentration. An intrinsic mechanism for AMR is found to arise from the band crossing due to magnetization-dependent symmetry protection. These special $k$-points can be shifted towards or away from the Fermi energy by varying the alloy composition and hence the exchange splitting, thus allowing AMR tunability. The prediction is confirmed by delicate transport measurements, which further reveal a reciprocal relationship of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities along different crystal axes., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental Materials available

Magnetic vortex, as one of the most interesting magnetic solitons, has attracted great interests in the past two decades. A fast and reliable method to switch vortex polarity and chirality is one of the key issues for various applications. Based on micromagnetic simulation, here we report a fast, low energy cost and deterministic switching of vortex core, through the designing of a notch structure in disks and the use of out-of-plane current geometry. We demonstrate that with such design, the multiple switching problems found in notch disk system can be avoided. Furthermore, the switching time can be reduced by more than 50% compared with disks without notch.

Magnetic vortices are characterized by the senses of in-plane magnetization chirality and by the polarity of the vortex core. The electrical control of vortex polarity and chirality is highly demanded not only for fundamental understanding on spin dynamics in nano-disks under different circumstances, but also for technological applications, such as magnetic non-volatile memories and spin torque oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Here we report a novel approach that enables one to electrically control both the vortex chirality and polarity with low energy consumption. Thorough micromagnetic simulations, we show that in thin nano-disks of diameter larger than 160 nm, with the presence of current-induced Oersted field, the dynamic transformation of the edge solitons is able to efficiently switch both vortex chirality and polarity with low current under certain circumstances. We then developed an approach to directly write any of the four vortex states by electrical current pulses from a random state. We further investigated the switching phase diagram as a function of disk diameters. The results show that the switching process is highly size-dependent. As disk diameter is smaller than 160 nm, the switch of VC chirality and polarity always takes place at the same time, resulting in an unchanged handedness before and after switch. Furthermore, the critical switch current can be as low as 3 x 10^6 A/cm^2 , indicating a possible way for low current switch of vortex chirality in small disks.

Novel mechanisms for electromagnetic wave emission in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime emerging at the nanometer scale have recently attracted intense attention for the purpose of searching next-generation broadband THz emitters. Here, we report a new mechanism for broadband THz emission, utilizing the interface inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect. By engineering the symmetry of the Ag/Bi Rashba interface, we demonstrate a controllable THz radiation (~0.1-5 THz) waveform emitted from metallic Fe/Ag/Bi heterostructures following photo-excitation. We further reveal that this type of THz radiation can be selectively superimposed on the emission discovered recently due to the inverse Spin Hall effect, yielding a unique film thickness dependent emission pattern. Our results thus offer new opportunities for versatile broadband THz radiation using the interface quantum effects.

Magnetization reversal of interconnected Kagome artificial spin ice was studied by the first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoresistance measurements. The magnetization reversal exhibits a distinct six-fold symmetry with the external field orientation. When the field is parallel to one of the nano-bar branches, the domain nucleation/propagation and annihilation processes sensitively depend on the field cycling history and the maximum field applied. When the field is nearly perpendicular to one of the branches, the FORC measurement reveals the magnetic interaction between the Dirac strings and orthogonal branches during the magnetization reversal process. Our results demonstrate that the FORC approach provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the magnetic interaction in the magnetization reversal processes of spin-frustrated systems.

The Large sky Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) General Survey is a spectroscopic survey that will eventually cover approximately half of the celestial sphere and collect 10 million spectra of stars, galaxies and QSOs. Objects both in the pilot survey and the first year general survey are included in the LAMOST First Data Release (DR1). The pilot survey started in October 2011 and ended in June 2012, and the data have been released to the public as the LAMOST Pilot Data Release in August 2012. The general survey started in September 2012, and completed its first year of operation in June 2013. The LAMOST DR1 includes a total of 1202 plates containing 2,955,336 spectra, of which 1,790,879 spectra have observed signal-to-noise S/N >10. All data with S/N>2 are formally released as LAMOST DR1 under the LAMOST data policy. This data release contains a total of 2,204,696 spectra, of which 1,944,329 are stellar spectra, 12,082 are galaxy spectra and 5,017 are quasars. The DR1 includes not only spectra, but also three stellar catalogues with measured parameters: AFGK-type stars with high quality spectra (1,061,918 entries), A-type stars (100,073 entries), and M stars (121,522 entries). This paper introduces the survey design, the observational and instrumental limitations, data reduction and analysis, and some caveats. Spin rectification in a single crystal Fe/Au/Fe sandwich is electrically detected for collinear and non-collinear magnetization and external magnetic field configurations. The line shape, line width and signal polarity are analysed. The spin rectication theory has been much extended by taking the magneto-crystalline anisotropy and shape anisotropy into account, which explained non-collinear resonances and agrees very well with experimental data. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of spin rectification in ferromagnetic metal was demonstrated in this work.

The effect of the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on the vortex in magnetic microdisk was investigated by micro magnetic simulation based on the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation. Our results show that the DM interaction modifies the size of the vortex core, and also induces an out of plane magnetization component at the edge and inside the disk. The DM interaction can destabilizes one vortex handedness, generate a bias field to the vortex core and couple the vortex polarity and chirality. This DM-interaction-induced coupling can therefore provide a new way to control vortex polarity and chirality.

We studied the angular dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and Planar Hall effect (PHE) at various temperatures in high quality epitaxial Fe3O4 films grown on MgO(001) substrates. The PHE contains only a twofold angular dependence, but the AMR below 200K is constituted with both twofold and fourfold symmetric terms. A quantitative fitting based on a phenomenological model indicates the nonmonotonics temperature dependence of the twofold component of AMR can be ascribed to the competition between the term and the term. A unidirectional component was observed in the angular dependent AMR. The fourfold symmetric AMR also existed for the magnetic field rotating in the plane perpendicular to the current. Our results indicate the AMR and PHE in single crystalline films have different origins, and also prove that the origin of the four-fold symmetry of AMR is related to the lattice symmetry rather than the spin scattering near the antiphase boundaries., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

Magnetoelectroluminescence (MEL) of organic semiconductor has been experimentally tuned by adopting blended emitting layer consisting of both hole and electron transporting materials. A theoretical model considering intermolecular quantum correlation is proposed to demonstrate two fundamental issues: (1) two mechanisms, spin scattering and spin mixing, dominate the two different steps respectively in the process of the magnetic field modulated generation of exciton; (2) the hopping rate of carriers determines the intensity of MEL. The spin dependent reflection at the interface is the key element to understand the spin transport. By completely solving the scattering problem based on first principles method, we obtained the spin resolved reflectivity spectra. The comparison of our theoretical results with experiment is good in a large energy scale from Fermi level to energy above vacuum level. It is found that interfacial distortion is crucial for understanding the spin dependence of the phase gain at the Cu$|$Co interface. The first normal emission experiment result on bcc Ni ultrathin film is presented in comparison with the one on fcc Ni.
