1. Chemical Interface Damping by Electrochemical Gold Oxidation

Abstract

Chemical interface damping is a change in the effective collision frequency of conduction band electrons in metal originating from a chemical change of the metal interface. In this work, we present in-situ ellipsometric measurements that reveal the chemical interface damping effect from electrochemical oxidation of single crystal and polycrystalline gold films. We observe an increase in collision frequency of up to 21 meV for single-crystalline gold. To compare to results obtained with thiols and metal-oxides on gold nanoparticles, we normalize the collision frequency by the electron mean free path to the surface of the structure. We show that electrochemical gold oxidation provides a stronger effect on collision frequency than these coatings. Similar ellipsometric experiments have previously been conducted to investigate the optical properties of gold oxide, but without taking chemical interface damping into account. The change in reflection from oxidation of gold was solely attributed to the oxide coating. We also show that the chemical interface damping effect saturates at a larger effective oxide thickness, which is attributed to the stabilization of the gold-oxide interface.

Abstract

The generation and utilization of hot charge carriers in plasmonic materials have emerged as a topic of significant importance, with profound implications across multiple disciplines, including optoelectronics, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and sensing. In this study, we investigate the hot electron transfer from nanoporous gold (npAu) in dependence of the structure size, utilizing both the nanoscale feature size and the interconnected nature of this material. We employ photoelectron injection from nanoporous gold into the electrolyte under UV illumination as a test electron transfer process. Nanoporous gold thin films with sub-10 nm initial ligament diameter are stepwise coarsened by potential cycles in a photoelectrochemical setup, thereby allowing us to precisely probe the influence of ligament diameter on the photocurrent response. The resulting ligament diameter variations are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. As the ligament diameter increased from 8 to 16 nm, there was a corresponding decrease in quantum efficiency proportional to the inverse ligament diameter squared. Such dependency is expected for electrons excited by surface collisions. For the small ligament diameter of 10 nm we estimate an emission efficiency of excited 6sp electrons as 3.14%, reaching 23% for the surface excited electrons., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

BackgroundCancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the most important components of tumor stroma and play a key role in modulating tumor growth. However, a mechanistic understanding of how CAFs communicate with tumor cells to promote their proliferation and invasion is far from complete. A major reason for this is that most current techniques and model systems do not capture the complexity of signal transduction that occurs between CAFs and tumor cells.MethodsIn this study, we employed a stable isotope labeling with amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) strategy to label invasive breast cancer cells, MDA-MB-231, and breast cancer patient-derived CAF this has already been defined above cells. We used an antibody-based phosphotyrosine peptide enrichment method coupled to LC-MS/MS to catalog and quantify tyrosine phosphorylation-mediated signal transduction events induced by the bidirectional communication between patient-derived CAFs and tumor cells.ResultsWe discovered that distinct signaling events were activated in CAFs and in tumor epithelial cells during the crosstalk between these two cell types. We identified reciprocal activation of a number of receptor tyrosine kinases including EGFR, FGFR1 and EPHA2 induced by this bidirectional communication.ConclusionsOur study not only provides insights into the mechanisms of the interaction between CAFs and tumor cells, but the model system described here could be used as a prototype for analysis of intercellular communication in many different tumor microenvironments.

38. Deep Learning Bridged Bioactivity, Structure, and GC-HRMS-Readable Evidence to Decipher Nontarget Toxicants in Sediments

Abstract

Identifying causative toxicants in mixtures is critical, but this task is challenging when mixtures contain multiple chemical classes. Effect-based methods are used to complement chemical analyses to identify toxicants, yet conventional bioassays typically rely on an apical and/or single endpoint, providing limited diagnostic potential to guide chemical prioritization. We proposed an event-driven taxonomy framework for mixture risk assessment that relied on high-throughput screening bioassays and toxicant identification integrated by deep learning. In this work, the framework was evaluated using chemical mixtures in sediments eliciting aryl-hydrocarbon receptor activation and oxidative stress response. Mixture prediction using target analysis explained <10% of observed sediment bioactivity. To identify additional contaminants, two deep learning models were developed to predict fingerprints of a pool of bioactive substances (event driver fingerprint, EDFP) and convert these candidates to MS-readable information (event driver ion, EDION) for nontarget analysis. Two libraries with 121 and 118 fingerprints were established, and 247 bioactive compounds were identified at confidence level 2 or 3 in sediment extract using GC-qToF-MS. Among them, 12 toxicants were analytically confirmed using reference standards. Collectively, we present a “bioactivity-signature-toxicant” strategy to deconvolute mixtures and to connect patchy data sets and guide nontarget analysis for diverse chemicals that elicit the same bioactivity.

Abstract

Thiahexaphyrinone 1 and thia-dipyrrin-appended corrorin 2 have been synthesized. Surprisingly, further oxidation of compound 2 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in dichloromethane afforded dimer 3 with two molecules of compound 2 linked at the alpha-carbon atoms of the thienyl units. Treatment of compound 3 with DDQ in MeOH and SnCl2 in tetrahydrofuran/H2O afforded the dimethoxy-attached dimer 4 and hydrogenated dihydroxy-attached dimer 5, respectively. 40. Mono- and bis-Pd(II) complexes of N-confused dithiahexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) with the absorption and aromaticity modulated by Pd(II) coordination, macrocycle contraction and ancillary ligands

Abstract

To further enrich the coordination chemistry of hexaphyrins and probe the underlying property-structural correlations, N-confused dithiahexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) (1) with 26 pi-electron H & uuml;ckel aromaticity was synthesized. Based on its unprecedented two unsymmetrical cavities, five palladium complexes 2, 3, 4-Ph, 4-Cl and 5 have been successfully synthesized under various coordinations. Thus, two mono-Pd(II) complexes 2 and 3 with the Pd(II) atom coordinated in the two different cavities were obtained by treating 1 with palladium reagents PdCl2, and (PPh3)(2)PdCl2 respectively. On this basis, bis-Pd(II) complexes 4-Ph and 4-Cl were synthesized by treating 2 and 3 with (PPh3)(2)PdCl2 and PdCl2, respectively. As a result, both 4-Ph and 4-Cl contain two Pd(II) atoms coordinated within the two cavities, with one of the Pd(II) atoms further coordinated to a triphenylphosphine ligand in addition to an anionic ancillary ligand of Ph- and Cl-, respectively. Notably, a further contracted mono-Pd(II) complex 5 was synthesized by treating 1 with Pd(PPh3)(4) by eliminating one of the meso-carbon atoms together with the corresponding C6F5 moiety. These complexes present tunable 26 pi aromaticity and NIR absorption up to 1060 nm.
