In this letter, we investigate the security of fluid antenna system (FAS)-reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) communication systems. The base station (BS) employs a single fixed-position antenna, while both the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper are equipped with fluid antennas. By utilizing the block-correlation model and the central limit theorem (CLT), we derive approximate expressions for the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability (SOP). Our analysis, validated by simulation results, demonstrates the effectiveness of the block-correlation model in accurately assessing the security performance. Moreover, simulation results reveal that FAS-RIS system significantly outperforms other systems in terms of security, further underscoring its potential in secure communication applications.

In this paper, we pave the way to six-generation (6G) by investigating the outage probability (OP) of fluid antenna system (FAS)-active reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) communication systems. We consider a FAS-ARIS setup consisting of a base station (BS) with a single fixed-position antenna and a receiver equipped with a fluid antenna (FA). Utilizing the block-correlation model, we derive a closed-form expression for the OP. Our analysis, supported by numerical results, confirms the accuracy and effectiveness of the derivation. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the FAS-ARIS system significantly outperforms other configurations in terms of OP, highlighting its potential to enhance communication performance and reliability in future 6G networks.

In this paper, we conduct a theoretical analysis of how to integrate reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) with cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), considering URLLC. We consider a downlink two-user cooperative NOMA system employing short-packet communications, where the two users are denoted by the central user (CU) and the cell-edge user (CEU), respectively, and an RIS is deployed to enhance signal quality. Specifically, compared to CEU, CU lies nearer from BS and enjoys the higher channel gains. Closed-form expressions for the CU's average block error rate (BLER) are derived. Furthermore, we evaluate the CEU's BLER performance utilizing selective combining (SC) and derive a tight lower bound under maximum ratio combining (MRC). Simulation results are provided to our analyses and demonstrate that the RIS-assisted system significantly outperforms its counterpart without RIS in terms of BLER. Notably, MRC achieves a squared multiple of the diversity gain of the SC, leading to more reliable performance, especially for the CEU. Furthermore, by dividing the RIS into two zones, each dedicated to a specific user, the average BLER can be further reduced, particularly for the CEU.

In this paper, we explore a dual-sniffer passive localization system that detects the timing difference of signals from both commercial base station (eNb) and user equipment (UE) to the sniffers. We design two localization schemes for UE localization: a time of arrival (ToA) based scheme and a time difference of arrival (TDoA) based scheme. In the ToA-based scheme, we derive two ellipse equations from measured arrival times at two sniffers, enabling direct numerical computation of the estimated position. For the TDoA-based scheme, we relocate one sniffer to a different position to obtain two sets of TDoA measurements, resulting in hyperbola equations. We then apply a least squares (LS) algorithm to analytically estimate the UE's position. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed TDoA-based scheme, demonstrating improved accuracy in UE positioning.We build a platform based on the considered localization system and conduct real-world experiments. The experimental results confirm the accuracy and practicality of the TDoA-based dual-sniffer localization scheme, demonstrating improved precision in passive localization.

This correspondence investigates the novel fluid antenna system (FAS) technology, combining with reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for wireless communications, where a base station (BS) communicates with a FAS-enabled user with the assistance of a RIS. To analyze this technology, we derive the outage probability based on the block-diagonal matrix approximation (BDMA) model. With this, we obtain the upper bound, lower bound, and asymptotic approximation of the outage probability to gain more insights. Moreover, we design the phase shift matrix of the RIS in order to minimize the system outage probability. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of our approximations and that the proposed schemes outperform benchmarks significantly.

In this correspondence, we analyze the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system that involves a fluid antenna system (FAS)-enabled receiver. By applying the central limit theorem (CLT), we derive approximate expressions for the system outage probability when the RIS has a large number of elements. Also, we adopt the block-correlation channel model to simplify the outage probability expressions, reducing the computational complexity and shedding light on the impact of the number of ports. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our analysis, especially in scenarios with a large number of RIS elements.

In this paper, we investigate the question of which technology, fluid antenna systems (FAS) or active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (ARIS), plays a more crucial role in FAS-ARIS wireless communication systems. To address this, we develop a comprehensive system model and explore the problem from an optimization perspective. We introduce an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm incorporating majorization-minimization (MM), successive convex approximation (SCA), and sequential rank-one constraint relaxation (SRCR) to tackle the non-convex challenges inherent in these systems. Specifically, for the transmit beamforming of the BS optimization, we propose a closed-form rank-one solution with low-complexity. For the optimization the positions of fluid antennas (FAs) of the BS, the Taylor expansions and MM algorithm are utilized to construct the effective lower bounds and upper bounds of the objective function and constraints, transforming the non-convex optimization problem into a convex one. Furthermore, we use the SCA and SRCR to optimize the reflection coefficient matrix of the ARIS and effectively solve the rank-one constraint. Simulation results reveal that the relative importance of FAS and ARIS varies depending on the scenario: FAS proves more critical in simpler models with fewer reflecting elements or limited transmission paths, while ARIS becomes more significant in complex scenarios with a higher number of reflecting elements or transmission paths. Ultimately, the integration of both FAS and ARIS creates a win-win scenario, resulting in a more robust and efficient communication system. This study underscores the importance of combining FAS with ARIS, as their complementary use provides the most substantial benefits across different communication environments.

This paper examines a fluid antenna (FA)-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Unlike traditional SWIPT systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs), our FA-assisted system enables dynamic reconfiguration of the radio propagation environment by adjusting the positions of FAs. This capability enhances both energy harvesting and communication performance. The system comprises a base station (BS) equipped with multiple FAs that transmit signals to an energy receiver (ER) and an information receiver (IR), both equipped with a single FA. Our objective is to maximize the communication rate between the BS and the IR while satisfying the harvested power requirement of the ER. This involves jointly optimizing the BS's transmit beamforming and the positions of all FAs. To address this complex convex optimization problem, we employ an alternating optimization (AO) approach, decomposing it into three sub-problems and solving them iteratively using first and second-order Taylor expansions. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed FA-assisted SWIPT system, demonstrating significant performance improvements over traditional FPA-based systems.

In this paper, we investigate reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication systems which involve a fixed-antenna base station (BS) and a mobile user (MU) that is equipped with fluid antenna system (FAS). Specifically, the RIS is utilized to enable communication for the user whose direct link from the base station is blocked by obstacles. We propose a comprehensive framework that provides transmission design for both static scenarios with the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) and harsh environments where CSI is hard to acquire. It leads to two approaches: a CSI-based scheme where CSI is available, and a CSI-free scheme when CSI is inaccessible. Given the complex spatial correlations in FAS, we employ block-diagonal matrix approximation and independent antenna equivalent models to simplify the derivation of outage probabilities in both cases. Based on the derived outage probabilities, we then optimize the throughput of the FAS-RIS system. For the CSI-based scheme, we first propose a gradient ascent-based algorithm to obtain a near-optimal solution. Then, to address the possible high computational complexity in the gradient algorithm, we approximate the objective function and confirm a unique optimal solution accessible through a bisection search method. For the CSI-free scheme, we apply the partial gradient ascent algorithm, reducing complexity further than full gradient algorithms. We also approximate the objective function and derive a locally optimal closed-form solution to maximize throughput. In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem for extremely large-scale multi-input and multi-output (XL-MIMO) systems, considering the spherical wavefront effect, spatially non-stationary (SnS) property, and dual-wideband effects. To accurately characterize the XL-MIMO channel, we first derive a novel spatial-and-frequency-domain channel model for XL-MIMO systems and carefully examine the channel characteristics in the angular-and-delay domain. Based on the obtained channel representation, we formulate XL-MIMO channel estimation as a Bayesian inference problem. To fully exploit the clustered sparsity of angular-and-delay channels and capture the inter-antenna and inter-subcarrier correlations, a Markov random field (MRF)-based hierarchical prior model is adopted. Meanwhile, to facilitate efficient channel reconstruction, we propose a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm based on approximate message passing (AMP) with a unitary transformation. Tailored to the MRF-based hierarchical prior model, the message passing equations are reformulated using structured variational inference, belief propagation, and mean-field rules. This paper introduces a novel mobile tracking framework leveraging the high-dimensional signal received from extremely large-scale (XL) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). This received signal, named XL-RIS information, has a much larger data dimension and therefore offers a richer feature set compared to the traditional base station (BS) received signal, i.e., BS information, enabling more accurate tracking of mobile users (MUs). As the first step, we present an XL-RIS information reconstruction (XL-RIS-IR) algorithm to reconstruct the high-dimensional XL-RIS information from the low-dimensional BS information. Building on this, this paper proposes a comprehensive framework for mobile tracking, consisting of a Feature Extraction Module and a Mobile Tracking Module. The Feature Extraction Module incorporates a convolutional neural network (CNN) extractor for spatial features, a time and frequency (T$\&$F) extractor for domain features, and a near-field angles of arrival (AoAs) extractor for capturing AoA features within the XL-RIS. These features are combined into a comprehensive feature vector, forming a time-varying sequence fed into the Mobile Tracking Module, which employs an Auto-encoder (AE) with a stacked bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) encoder and a standard LSTM decoder to predict MUs' positions in the upcoming time slot. Simulation results confirm that the tracking accuracy of our proposed framework is significantly enhanced by using reconstructed XL-RIS information and exhibits substantial robustness to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) variations.

This paper proposes a novel localization algorithm using the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) received signal, i.e., RIS information. Compared with BS received signal, i.e., BS information, RIS information offers higher dimension and richer feature set, thereby providing an enhanced capacity to distinguish positions of the mobile users (MUs). Additionally, we address a practical scenario where RIS contains some unknown (number and places) faulty elements that cannot receive signals. Initially, we employ transfer learning to design a two-phase transfer learning (TPTL) algorithm, designed for accurate detection of faulty elements. Then our objective is to regain the information lost from the faulty elements and reconstruct the complete high-dimensional RIS information for localization. To this end, we propose a transfer-enhanced dual-stage (TEDS) algorithm. In \emph{Stage I}, we integrate the CNN and variational autoencoder (VAE) to obtain the RIS information, which in \emph{Stage II}, is input to the transferred DenseNet 121 to estimate the location of the MU. To gain more insight, we propose an alternative algorithm named transfer-enhanced direct fingerprint (TEDF) algorithm which only requires the BS information. The comparison between TEDS and TEDF reveals the effectiveness of faulty element detection and the benefits of utilizing the high-dimensional RIS information for localization. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems have attracted extensive research attention due to their accuracy enhancement capabilities. However, most studies primarily utilized the base stations (BS) received signal, i.e., BS information, for localization algorithm design, neglecting the potential of RIS received signal, i.e., RIS information. Compared with BS information, RIS information offers higher dimension and richer feature set, thereby significantly improving the ability to extract positions of the mobile users (MUs). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the algorithm design based on the high-dimensional RIS information. Specifically, we first propose a RIS information reconstruction (RIS-IR) algorithm to reconstruct the high-dimensional RIS information from the low-dimensional BS information. The proposed RIS-IR algorithm comprises a data processing module for preprocessing BS information, a convolution neural network (CNN) module for feature extraction, and an output module for outputting the reconstructed RIS information. Then, we propose a transfer learning based fingerprint (TFBF) algorithm that employs the reconstructed high-dimensional RIS information for MU localization. This involves adapting a pre-trained DenseNet-121 model to map the reconstructed RIS signal to the MU's three-dimensional (3D) position. Empirical results affirm that the localization performance is significantly influenced by the high-dimensional RIS information and maintains robustness against unoptimized phase shifts.

This paper investigates covert data transmission within a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) over-the-air computation (AirComp) network, where sensors transmit data to the access point (AP) while guaranteeing covertness to the warden (Willie). Simultaneously, the AP introduces artificial noise (AN) to confuse Willie, meeting the covert requirement. We address the challenge of minimizing mean-square-error (MSE) of the AP, while considering transmit power constraints at both the AP and the sensors, as well as ensuring the covert transmission to Willie with a low detection error probability (DEP). However, obtaining globally optimal solutions for the investigated non-convex problem is challenging due to the interdependence of optimization variables. To tackle this problem, we introduce an exact penalty algorithm and transform the optimization problem into a difference-of-convex (DC) form problem to find a locally optimal solution. Simulation results showcase the superior performance in terms of our proposed scheme in comparison to the benchmark schemes.

This paper addresses the fairness issue within fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) systems, where a single fixed-antenna base station (BS) transmits superposition-coded signals to two users, each with a single fluid antenna. We define fairness through the minimization of the maximum outage probability for the two users, under total resource constraints for both FAS-assisted NOMA and OMA systems. Specifically, in the FAS-assisted NOMA systems, we study both a special case and the general case, deriving a closed-form solution for the former and applying a bisection search method to find the optimal solution for the latter. Moreover, for the general case, we derive a locally optimal closed-form solution to achieve fairness. In the FAS-assisted OMA systems, to deal with the non-convex optimization problem with coupling of the variables in the objective function, we employ an approximation strategy to facilitate a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm, achieving locally optimal solutions for both cases. Empirical analysis validates that our proposed solutions outperform conventional NOMA and OMA benchmarks in terms of fairness.

Fluid Antenna System (FAS) is recognized as a promising technology for enhancing communication performance. In this context, we explored the potential of FAS-assisted wireless powered communication systems. Specifically, the transmitter, equipped with FAS, harvests the radio frequency (RF) signal from a power beacon and utilizes the harvested energy for data transmission to the receiver. To evaluate the performance of the considered systems, we derive both the analytical and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability. Simulation results indicate that the diversity of the considered network closely aligns with the number of ports. Besides, it is also revealed that the port selection criteria based solely on single-hop configurations yield a diversity order of only one.

This work considers a dual-functional radar and communication (DFRC) system with an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and a potential eavesdropper. Our purpose is to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) of the system by jointly designing the beamforming matrix at the DFRC base station (BS) and the reflecting coefficients at the active RIS, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) constraint of the radar echo and the power consumption constraints at the DFRC-BS and active RIS. An alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and majorizationminimization (MM) is applied to solve the SR-maximization problem by alternately optimizing the beamforming matrix and the reflecting coefficients. Specifically, we first apply the SDR and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods to transform the two subproblems into more tractable forms, then the MM method is applied to derive a concave surrogate function and iteratively solve the subproblems. Finally, simulation results indicate that the active RIS can better confront the impact of "multiplicative fading" and outperforms traditional passive RIS in terms of both secure data rate and radar sensing performance., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, we investigate a fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for short-packet communications. The base station (BS) adopts a single fixed antenna, while both the central user (CU) and the cell-edge user (CEU) are equipped with a FAS. Each FAS comprises $N$ flexible positions (also known as ports), linked to $N$ arbitrarily correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We derive expressions for the average block error rate (BLER) of the FAS-assisted NOMA system and provide asymptotic BLER expressions. We determine that the diversity order for CU and CEU is $N$, indicating that the system performance can be considerably improved by increasing $N$. This paper investigates the efficacy of utilizing fluid antenna system (FAS) at a legitimate monitor to oversee suspicious communication. The monitor switches the antenna position to minimize its outage probability for enhancing the monitoring performance. Our objective is to maximize the average monitoring rate, whose expression involves the integral of the first-order Marcum $Q$ function. The optimization problem, as initially posed, is non-convex owing to its objective function. Nevertheless, upon substituting with an upper bound, we provide a theoretical foundation confirming the existence of a unique optimal solution for the modified problem, achievable efficiently by the bisection search method. Furthermore, we also introduce a locally closed-form optimal resolution for maximizing the average monitoring rate. This letter investigates a fluid antenna system (FAS) where multiple ports can be activated for signal combining for enhanced receiver performance. Given $M$ ports at the FAS, the best $K$ ports out of the $M$ available ports are selected before maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used to combine the received signals from the selected ports. The aim of this letter is to study the achievable performance of FAS when more than one ports can be activated. We do so by analyzing the outage probability of this setup in Rayleigh fading channels through the utilization of Gauss-Chebyshev integration, lower bound estimation, and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic approximations. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a novel residual convolution network regression (RCNR) learning algorithm to output the estimated three-dimensional (3D) position of the MU. Specifically, the RCNR learninng algorithm includes a data processing block to process the input STCRV, a normal convolution block to extract the features of STCRV, four residual convolution blocks to further extract the features and protect the integrity of the features, and a regression block to estimate the 3D position. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems are increasingly recognized for enhancing accuracy in internet of things (IoT) networks. However, prevailing studies tend to either assume a Gaussian distribution for angle estimation error (AEE) or directly neglect the impact of the AEE, overlooking its non-Gaussian nature in real-world scenarios, particularly with diverse estimation methods (e.g., 2D-DFT algorithm). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the design and performance analysis of RIS-aided localization systems, specifically tackling non-Gaussian AEE. We adopt the classical two-step three-dimensional (3D) localization scheme to determine the position of mobile user (MU). Initially, we estimate angles of arrival (AoAs) and time differences of arrival (TDoAs) at the RIS using different methods, resulting in non-Gaussian and Gaussian errors, respectively. Subsequently, to accommodate the non-Gaussian nature of AoAs errors and the Gaussian character of TDoA errors, we design a multiple weighted least squares (mWLS) algorithm to accurately localize MU. Besides, our research also includes a unique bias analysis for evaluating the performance of the proposed localization algorithm under both Gaussian and non-Gaussian errors. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework to jointly analyze the angle estimation error and design the three-dimensional (3D) positioning algorithm for a millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning system. First, we estimate the angles of arrival (AoAs) at the anchors by applying the two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT) algorithm. Based on the property of the 2D-DFT algorithm, the angle estimation error is analyzed in terms of probability density functions (PDF). The analysis shows that the derived angle estimation error is non-Gaussian, which is different from the existing work. Second, the intricate expression of the PDF of the AoA estimation error is simplified by employing the first-order linear approximation of triangle functions. Then, we derive a complex expression for the variance based on the derived PDF. Specifically, for the azimuth estimation error, the variance is separately integrated according to the different non-zero intervals of the PDF. Finally, we apply the weighted least square (WLS) algorithm to estimate the 3D position of the MU by using the estimated AoAs and the obtained non-Gaussian variance. In the past as well as present wireless communication systems, the wireless propagation environment is regarded as an uncontrollable black box that impairs the received signal quality, and its negative impacts are compensated for by relying on the design of various sophisticated transmission/reception schemes. However, the improvements through applying such schemes operating at two endpoints (i.e., transmitter and receiver) only are limited even after five generations of wireless systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have emerged as a new and revolutionary technology that can configure the wireless environment in a favorable manner by properly tuning the phase shifts of a large number of quasi passive and low-cost reflecting elements, thus standing out as a promising candidate technology for the next-/sixth-generation (6G) wireless system. However, to reap the performance benefits promised by RIS/IRS, efficient signal processing techniques are crucial, for a variety of purposes such as channel estimation, transmission design, radio localization, and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances on RIS/IRS-aided wireless systems from the signal processing perspective. Symbiotic radio (SR) backscatter systems are possible techniques for the future low-power wireless communications for Internet of Things devices. In this paper, we propose a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) SR backscatter system, where the secondary multi-antenna transmission from the backscatter device (BD) to the receiver is riding on the primary multi-antenna transmission from the transmitter to the receiver. We investigate the beamforming design optimization problem which maximizes the achievable rate of secondary transmission under the achievable rate constraint of primary transmission. In the MIMO SR backscatter system, each antenna of the SR BD reflects its received ambient radio frequency signals from all the transmitting antennas of the transmitter, which causes the globally optimal solution is difficult to obtain. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain the achievable rate upper bound. Furthermore, considering both primary and secondary transmissions, we propose an exact penalty method based locally optimal solution. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed exact penalty method based locally optimal solution performs close to the upper bound.
