With the rapid advancement of large language models, there has been a growing interest in their capabilities in mathematical reasoning. However, existing research has primarily focused on text-based algebra problems, neglecting the study of geometry due to the lack of high-quality geometric datasets. To address this gap, this paper introduces AutoGeo, a novel approach for automatically generating mathematical geometric images to fulfill the demand for large-scale and diverse geometric datasets. AutoGeo facilitates the creation of AutoGeo-100k, an extensive repository comprising 100k high-quality geometry image-text pairs. By leveraging precisely defined geometric clauses, AutoGeo-100k contains a wide variety of geometric shapes, including lines, polygons, circles, and complex spatial relationships, etc. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates the efficacy of AutoGeo-100k in enhancing the performance of multimodal large language models through fine-tuning. Experimental results indicate significant improvements in the model's ability in handling geometric images, as evidenced by enhanced accuracy in tasks such as geometric captioning and mathematical reasoning. This research not only fills a critical gap in the availability of geometric datasets but also paves the way for the advancement of sophisticated AI-driven tools in education and research. Customized video generation aims to generate high-quality videos guided by text prompts and subject's reference images. However, since it is only trained on static images, the fine-tuning process of subject learning disrupts abilities of video diffusion models (VDMs) to combine concepts and generate motions. To restore these abilities, some methods use additional video similar to the prompt to fine-tune or guide the model. This requires frequent changes of guiding videos and even re-tuning of the model when generating different motions, which is very inconvenient for users. In this paper, we propose CustomCrafter, a novel framework that preserves the model's motion generation and conceptual combination abilities without additional video and fine-tuning to recovery. For preserving conceptual combination ability, we design a plug-and-play module to update few parameters in VDMs, enhancing the model's ability to capture the appearance details and the ability of concept combinations for new subjects. For motion generation, we observed that VDMs tend to restore the motion of video in the early stage of denoising, while focusing on the recovery of subject details in the later stage. Therefore, we propose Dynamic Weighted Video Sampling Strategy. Using the pluggability of our subject learning modules, we reduce the impact of this module on motion generation in the early stage of denoising, preserving the ability to generate motion of VDMs. In the later stage of denoising, we restore this module to repair the appearance details of the specified subject, thereby ensuring the fidelity of the subject's appearance. Research on Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) towards the multi-image cross-modal instruction has received increasing attention and made significant progress, particularly in scenarios involving closely resembling images (e.g., change captioning). Existing MLLMs typically follow a two-step process in their pipelines: first, extracting visual tokens independently for each input image, and then aligning these visual tokens from different images with the Large Language Model (LLM) in its textual feature space. However, the independent extraction of visual tokens for each image may result in different semantics being prioritized for different images in the first step, leading to a lack of preservation of linking information among images for subsequent LLM analysis. This issue becomes more serious in scenarios where significant variations exist among the images (e.g., visual storytelling). To address this challenge, we introduce Semantic Alignment for Multi-modal large language models (SAM). By involving the bidirectional semantic guidance between different images in the visual-token extraction process, SAM aims to enhance the preservation of linking information for coherent analysis and align the semantics of different images before feeding them into LLM. As the test bed, we propose a large-scale dataset named MmLINK consisting of 69K samples. Different from most existing datasets for MLLMs fine-tuning, our MmLINK dataset comprises multi-modal instructions with significantly diverse images. Extensive experiments on the group captioning task and the storytelling task prove the effectiveness of our SAM model, surpassing the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin (+37% for group captioning and +22% for storytelling on CIDEr score). Semantic segmentation involves assigning a specific category to each pixel in an image. While Vision Transformer-based models have made significant progress, current semantic segmentation methods often struggle with precise predictions in localized areas like object boundaries. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a new semantic segmentation architecture, ``MacFormer'', which features two key components. Firstly, using learnable agent tokens, a Mutual Agent Cross-Attention (MACA) mechanism effectively facilitates the bidirectional integration of features across encoder and decoder layers. This enables better preservation of low-level features, such as elementary edges, during decoding. Secondly, a Frequency Enhancement Module (FEM) in the decoder leverages high-frequency and low-frequency components to boost features in the frequency domain, benefiting object boundaries with minimal computational complexity increase. Both Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformers have shown great success in semantic segmentation tasks. Efforts have been made to integrate CNNs with Transformer models to capture both local and global context interactions. However, there is still room for enhancement, particularly when considering constraints on computational resources. In this paper, we introduce HAFormer, a model that combines the hierarchical features extraction ability of CNNs with the global dependency modeling capability of Transformers to tackle lightweight semantic segmentation challenges. Specifically, we design a Hierarchy-Aware Pixel-Excitation (HAPE) module for adaptive multi-scale local feature extraction. During the global perception modeling, we devise an Efficient Transformer (ET) module streamlining the quadratic calculations associated with traditional Transformers. Moreover, a correlation-weighted Fusion (cwF) module selectively merges diverse feature representations, significantly enhancing predictive accuracy. HAFormer achieves high performance with minimal computational overhead and compact model size, achieving 74.2% mIoU on Cityscapes and 71.1% mIoU on CamVid test datasets, with frame rates of 105FPS and 118FPS on a single 2080Ti GPU. This paper investigates equivalence of square multivariate polynomial matrices with the determinant being some power of a univariate irreducible polynomial. We first generalized a global-local theorem of Vaserstein. Then we proved these matrices are equivalent to their Smith forms by the generalized global-local theorem.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated significant application potential in various fields. However, GNNs are still vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Numerous adversarial defense methods on GNNs are proposed to address the problem of adversarial attacks. However, these methods can only serve as a defense before poisoning, but cannot repair poisoned GNN. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a method to repair poisoned GNN. In this paper, we address this gap by introducing the novel concept of model repair for GNNs. We propose a repair framework, Repairing Robustness of Graph Neural Networks via Machine Unlearning (GraphMU), which aims to fine-tune poisoned GNN to forget adversarial samples without the need for complete retraining. We also introduce a unlearning validation method to ensure that our approach effectively forget specified poisoned data. To evaluate the effectiveness of GraphMU, we explore three fine-tuned subgraph construction scenarios based on the available perturbation information: (i) Known Perturbation Ratios, (ii) Known Complete Knowledge of Perturbations, and (iii) Unknown any Knowledge of Perturbations. Our extensive experiments, conducted across four citation datasets and four adversarial attack scenarios, demonstrate that GraphMU can effectively restore the performance of poisoned GNN.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved tremendous success, but recent studies have shown that GNNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which significantly hinders their use in safety-critical scenarios. Therefore, the design of robust GNNs has attracted increasing attention. However, existing research has mainly been conducted via experimental trial and error, and thus far, there remains a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the vulnerability of GNNs. To address this limitation, we systematically investigate the adversarial robustness of GNNs by considering graph data patterns, model-specific factors, and the transferability of adversarial examples. Through extensive experiments, a set of principled guidelines is obtained for improving the adversarial robustness of GNNs, for example: (i) rather than highly regular graphs, the training graph data with diverse structural patterns is crucial for model robustness, which is consistent with the concept of adversarial training; (ii) the large model capacity of GNNs with sufficient training data has a positive effect on model robustness, and only a small percentage of neurons in GNNs are affected by adversarial attacks; (iii) adversarial transfer is not symmetric and the adversarial examples produced by the small-capacity model have stronger adversarial transferability. This work illuminates the vulnerabilities of GNNs and opens many promising avenues for designing robust GNNs.

This review provides a comprehensive overview of current research on the structural, electronic, and magnetic characteristics of the recently discovered high-temperature superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressures. We present the experimental results for synthesizing and characterizing this material, derived from measurements of transport, thermodynamics, and various spectroscopic techniques, and discuss their physical implications. We also explore theoretical models proposed to describe the electronic structures and superconducting pairing symmetry in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, highlighting the intricate interplay between electronic correlations and magnetic interactions. Despite these advances, challenges remain in growing high-quality samples free of extrinsic phases and oxygen deficiencies and in developing reliable measurement tools for determining diamagnetism and other physical quantities under high pressures. Further investigations in these areas are essential to deepening our understanding of the physical properties of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and unlocking its superconducting pairing mechanism., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Scandium-doped aluminum nitride (AlScN) with an asymmetric hexagonal wurtzite structure exhibits enhanced second-order nonlinear and piezoelectric properties compared to aluminum nitride (AlN), while maintaining a relatively large bandgap. It provides a promising platform for photonic integration and facilitates the seamless integration of passive and active functional devices. Here, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of AlScN EO micro-ring modulators, introducing active functionalities to the chip-scale AlScN platform. These waveguide-integrated EO modulators employ sputtered AlScN thin films as the light-guiding medium, and the entire fabrication process is compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. We characterize the high-frequency performance of an AlScN modulator for the first time, extracting a maximum in-device effective EO coefficient of 2.86 pm/V at 12 GHz. The devices show a minimum half-wave voltage-length product of 3.12 V*cm and a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of approximately 22 GHz. Our work provides a promising modulation scheme for cost-effective silicon-integrated photonics systems.

Spatio-temporal action detection (STAD) is an important fine-grained video understanding task. Current methods require box and label supervision for all action classes in advance. However, in real-world applications, it is very likely to come across new action classes not seen in training because the action category space is large and hard to enumerate. Also, the cost of data annotation and model training for new classes is extremely high for traditional methods, as we need to perform detailed box annotations and re-train the whole network from scratch. In this paper, we propose a new challenging setting by performing open-vocabulary STAD to better mimic the situation of action detection in an open world. Open-vocabulary spatio-temporal action detection (OV-STAD) requires training a model on a limited set of base classes with box and label supervision, which is expected to yield good generalization performance on novel action classes. For OV-STAD, we build two benchmarks based on the existing STAD datasets and propose a simple but effective method based on pretrained video-language models (VLM). To better adapt the holistic VLM for the fine-grained action detection task, we carefully fine-tune it on the localized video region-text pairs. This customized fine-tuning endows the VLM with better motion understanding, thus contributing to a more accurate alignment between video regions and texts. Local region feature and global video feature fusion before alignment is adopted to further improve the action detection performance by providing global context. Our method achieves a promising performance on novel classes.

Traditional video action detectors typically adopt the two-stage pipeline, where a person detector is first employed to generate actor boxes and then 3D RoIAlign is used to extract actor-specific features for classification. This detection paradigm requires multi-stage training and inference, and the feature sampling is constrained inside the box, failing to effectively leverage richer context information outside. Recently, a few query-based action detectors have been proposed to predict action instances in an end-to-end manner. However, they still lack adaptability in feature sampling and decoding, thus suffering from the issues of inferior performance or slower convergence. In this paper, we propose two core designs for a more flexible one-stage sparse action detector. First, we present a query-based adaptive feature sampling module, which endows the detector with the flexibility of mining a group of discriminative features from the entire spatio-temporal domain. Second, we devise a decoupled feature mixing module, which dynamically attends to and mixes video features along the spatial and temporal dimensions respectively for better feature decoding. Based on these designs, we instantiate two detection pipelines, that is, STMixer-K for keyframe action detection and STMixer-T for action tubelet detection. Video-based visual relation detection tasks, such as video scene graph generation, play important roles in fine-grained video understanding. However, current video visual relation detection datasets have two main limitations that hinder the progress of research in this area. First, they do not explore complex human-human interactions in multi-person scenarios. Second, the relation types of existing datasets have relatively low-level semantics and can be often recognized by appearance or simple prior information, without the need for detailed spatio-temporal context reasoning. Nevertheless, comprehending high-level interactions between humans is crucial for understanding complex multi-person videos, such as sports and surveillance videos. To address this issue, we propose a new video visual relation detection task: video human-human interaction detection, and build a dataset named SportsHHI for it. SportsHHI contains 34 high-level interaction classes from basketball and volleyball sports. 118,075 human bounding boxes and 50,649 interaction instances are annotated on 11,398 keyframes. To benchmark this, we propose a two-stage baseline method and conduct extensive experiments to reveal the key factors for a successful human-human interaction detector. As a quasi-layered ferrimagnetic material, Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ nanoflakes exhibit magnetoresistance behaviour that is fundamentally different from their bulk crystal counterparts. They offer three key properties crucial for spintronics. Firstly, at least 10^6 times faster response comparing to that exhibited by bulk crystals has been observed in current-controlled resistance and magnetoresistance. Secondly, ultra-low current density is required for resistance modulation (~ 5 A/cm$^2$). Thirdly, electrically gate-tunable magnetoresistance has been realized. Theoretical calculations reveal that the unique magnetoresistance behaviour in the Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ nanoflakes arises from a magnetic field induced band gap shift across the Fermi level. The rapid current induced resistance variation is attributed to spin-orbit torque, an intrinsically ultra-fast process (~nanoseconds). This study suggests promising avenues for spintronic applications. Controllable spherical panoramic image generation holds substantial applicative potential across a variety of domains.However, it remains a challenging task due to the inherent spherical distortion and geometry characteristics, resulting in low-quality content generation.In this paper, we introduce a novel framework of SphereDiffusion to address these unique challenges, for better generating high-quality and precisely controllable spherical panoramic images.For the spherical distortion characteristic, we embed the semantics of the distorted object with text encoding, then explicitly construct the relationship with text-object correspondence to better use the pre-trained knowledge of the planar images.Meanwhile, we employ a deformable technique to mitigate the semantic deviation in latent space caused by spherical distortion.For the spherical geometry characteristic, in virtue of spherical rotation invariance, we improve the data diversity and optimization objectives in the training process, enabling the model to better learn the spherical geometry characteristic.Furthermore, we enhance the denoising process of the diffusion model, enabling it to effectively use the learned geometric characteristic to ensure the boundary continuity of the generated images.With these specific techniques, experiments on Structured3D dataset show that SphereDiffusion significantly improves the quality of controllable spherical image generation and relatively reduces around 35% FID on average., Comment: Accepted by AAAI2024

We present ZSL-RPPO, an improved zero-shot learning architecture that overcomes the limitations of teacher-student neural networks and enables generating robust, reliable, and versatile locomotion for quadrupedal robots in challenging terrains. We propose a new algorithm RPPO (Recurrent Proximal Policy Optimization) that directly trains recurrent neural network in partially observable environments and results in more robust training using domain randomization. Our locomotion controller supports extensive perturbation across simulation-to-reality transfer for both intrinsic and extrinsic physical parameters without further fine-tuning. This can avoid the significant decline of student's performance during simulation-to-reality transfer and therefore enhance the robustness and generalization of the locomotion controller. We deployed our controller on the Unitree A1 and Aliengo robots in real environment and exteroceptive perception is provided by either a solid-state Lidar or a depth camera. Our locomotion controller was tested in various challenging terrains like slippery surfaces, Grassy Terrain, and stairs. Our experiment results and comparison show that our approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art.

The intimate connection between magnetism and superconducting pairing routinely plays a central role in determining the occurrence of unconventional superconducting states. In high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) stripe-ordered cuprate superconductors and a magnetically ordered iron-based superconductor, the coupling between magnetism and superconductivity gives birth to novel phases of matter with modulation of the superconducting pairing in the real space. Further exploration of these phases can shed light on the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. Here we report on the discovery of a peculiar spatially-varying superconducting state residing at the interface between (110)-oriented KTaO3 and ferromagnetic EuO. Electrical transport measurements reveal different Tc and upper critical fields (Hc2) with current applied along the two orthogonal in-plane directions. Such anisotropy persistently occurs in the low-carrier-density samples that are characterized by strong coupling between Ta 5d and Eu 4f electrons, whereas in the high-carrier-density samples the coupling is weakened and Tc and Hc2 becomes isotropic. Complemented by local imaging of diamagnetism and theoretical analysis, our observations imply an unprecedented emergence of superconducting stripes wherein the phase coherence is established ahead of the rest of the interface, arising from a band-filling-dependent ferromagnetic proximity. Stellar flares are critical phenomena on stellar surfaces, which are closely tied to stellar magnetism. While extensively studied in main-sequence (MS) stars, their occurrence in evolved compact stars, specifically hot subdwarfs and white dwarfs (WDs), remains scarcely explored. Based on Cycles 1-5 of TESS photometry, we conducted a pioneering survey of flare events in $\sim12,000$ compact stars, corresponding to $\sim38,000$ light curves with 2-minute cadence. Through dedicated techniques for detrending light curves, identifying preliminary flare candidates, and validating them via machine learning, we established a catalog of 1016 flares from 193 compact stars, including 182 from 58 sdB/sdO stars and 834 from 135 WDs, respectively. However, all flaring compact stars showed signs of contamination from nearby objects or companion stars, preventing sole attribution of the detected flares. For WDs, it is highly probable that the flares originated from their cool MS companions. In contrast, the higher luminosities of sdB/sdO stars diminish companion contributions, suggesting that detected flares originated from sdB/sdO stars themselves or through close magnetic interactions with companions. Focusing on a refined sample of 23 flares from 13 sdB/sdO stars, we found their flare frequency distributions were slightly divergent from those of cool MS stars; instead, they resemble those of hot B/A-type MS stars having radiative envelopes. This similarity implies the flares on sdB/sdO stars, if these flares did originate from them, may share underlying mechanisms with hot MS stars, which warrants further investigation., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

In this study, we examine the effects of bubble collisions and coalescence on electrolysis performance using micro-electrodes in a 0.5 M H2SO4. We observe that the addition of electrolytes such as HClO4, despite increasing conductivity, significantly reduces energy conversion efficiency by inhibiting bubble coalescence. A phase diagram illustrates the trade-off between improved conductivity and inhibition of coalescence with varying concentrations of supporting electrolytes (HClO4 or Na2SO4) at different electrolysis current. Contrary to conventional understanding, we find that larger bubbles resulting from coalescence enhance efficiency. This can be attributed to the early release of smaller bubbles, approximately 10 micron in size, facilitated by the coalescence of the surface microbubble and the just-detached large bubble. Additionally, the merge of two bubbles, at a critical velocity of ~2 m/s, enhances agitation at the electrode surface that significantly improves electrolyte transport within the stagnant layer. These findings challenge conventional perspectives on bubble detachment size and suggest innovative approaches to optimize energy consumption in electrolysis, especially in systems where the bubble coalescence is inhibited, such as alkaline water electrolysis and the chlor-alkali industry., Comment: 10 pages and 4 figures

Recently, a signature of high-temperature superconductivity above the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) was reported for La3Ni2O7 under pressure. This finding immediately stimulates intense interest in the possible high-Tc superconducting mechanism in double-layer nickelates. Interestingly, the pressure-dependent phase diagram inferred from transport measurements indicates that superconductivity under high pressure emerges from the suppression of a density-wave-like transition at ambient pressure, which is similar to high-temperature superconductors. Therefore, clarifying the exact nature of the density-wave-like transition is important for determining the mechanism of superconductivity in double-layer nickelates. Here, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of 139La nuclei was performed to study the density-wave-like transition in a single crystal of La3Ni2O7. The temperature-dependent 139La NMR spectrum and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) provide unambiguous evidence for a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition with a transition temperature TSDW of ~ 150 K. Furthermore, the anisotropic splitting of the NMR spectrum suggests a possible double spin stripe with magnetic moments along the c axis. In addition, the present NMR measurements also revealed spatial inhomogeneity of magnetism due to inner apical oxygen vacancies. The transferability of adversarial examples is of central importance to transfer-based black-box adversarial attacks. Previous works for generating transferable adversarial examples focus on attacking \emph{given} pretrained surrogate models while the connections between surrogate models and adversarial trasferability have been overlooked. In this paper, we propose {\em Lipschitz Regularized Surrogate} (LRS) for transfer-based black-box attacks, a novel approach that transforms surrogate models towards favorable adversarial transferability. Using such transformed surrogate models, any existing transfer-based black-box attack can run without any change, yet achieving much better performance. Specifically, we impose Lipschitz regularization on the loss landscape of surrogate models to enable a smoother and more controlled optimization process for generating more transferable adversarial examples. In addition, this paper also sheds light on the connection between the inner properties of surrogate models and adversarial transferability, where three factors are identified: smaller local Lipschitz constant, smoother loss landscape, and stronger adversarial robustness. We evaluate our proposed LRS approach by attacking state-of-the-art standard deep neural networks and defense models. The capacity to generalize to future unseen data stands as one of the utmost crucial attributes of deep neural networks. Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) aims to enhance the generalizability by minimizing worst-case loss using one-step gradient ascent as an approximation. However, as training progresses, the non-linearity of the loss landscape increases, rendering one-step gradient ascent less effective. On the other hand, multi-step gradient ascent will incur higher training cost. In this paper, we introduce a normalized Hessian trace to accurately measure the curvature of loss landscape on {\em both} training and test sets. In particular, to counter excessive non-linearity of loss landscape, we propose Curvature Regularized SAM (CR-SAM), integrating the normalized Hessian trace as a SAM regularizer. Additionally, we present an efficient way to compute the trace via finite differences with parallelism. Our theoretical analysis based on PAC-Bayes bounds establishes the regularizer's efficacy in reducing generalization error. Empirical evaluation on CIFAR and ImageNet datasets shows that CR-SAM consistently enhances classification performance for ResNet and Vision Transformer (ViT) models across various datasets. Revealing the role of Coulomb interaction in topological semimetals with Dirac/Weyl-like band dispersion shapes a new frontier in condensed matter physics. Topological node-line semimetals (TNLSMs), anticipated as a fertile ground for exploring electronic correlation effects due to the anisotropy associated with their node-line structure, have recently attracted considerable attention. In this study, we report an experimental observation for correlation effects in TNLSMs realized by black phosphorus (BP) under hydrostatic pressure. By performing a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and band calculations on compressed BP, a magnetic-field-induced electronic instability of Weyl-like fermions is identified under an external magnetic field parallel to the so-called nodal ring in the reciprocal space. Anomalous spin fluctuations serving as the fingerprint of electronic instability are observed at low temperatures, and they are observed to maximize at approximately 1.0 GPa.
