6. Effect of Calcium on the Setting Time and Mechanical Property of a Red Mud–Blast Furnace Slag-Based Geopolymer.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the effects of three calcium compounds on the workability, setting time and mechanical properties of red mud (RM)–blast furnace slag (BFS)-based geopolymers. The crystalline phase, hydration process and microstructure of RM-BFS-based geopolymers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), heat evolution, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests. The results showed that an appropriate amount of calcium compounds can improve the flowability and compressive strength of the geopolymers, but the excessiveness causes a decrease in strength due to rapid hardening. Other than calcium carbonate, both calcium oxide and calcium chloride played important roles in accelerating the setting times of RM-BFS-based geopolymers. The acceleration in the setting times of geopolymers could be attributed to the calcium hydroxide produced by the dissolution of the calcium compounds, which also provides nucleation sites for the geopolymerization reaction. Hepatitis E (Hepatitis E, HE) is an acute and chronic infectious hepatitis caused by hepatitis E virus (Hepatitis E Virus, HEV) infection, which is responsible for most acute hepatitis in the world and is a significant public health problem. The pathogen, HEV, has three Open Reading Frames (ORFs) ORF1, ORF2, and ORF3, each of which has a different function. Most of the current research is focused on ORF1 and ORF2, while the research on ORF3 is still relatively small. To provide more ideas for the study of HEV pathogenesis and the prevention and treatment of HE, this paper reviews the effects of ORF3 on the ERK pathway, growth factors, immune response, and virus release. Abstract

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) contains a large number of unhydrated particles which are prone for self-healing in the presence of water. In this work, three-dimensional X-ray microscope was employed to investigate the self-healing degree. To aid in understanding the evolution of self-healing, a hydration model CEMHYD3D was utilized to simulate the distribution of solids and pores phase in a cracked microstructure. Based on the random walk model, the influence of crack self-healing degree on chloride ion transport process was analysed. The results show that the smaller crack width and the longer healing time reflect a lager self-healing degree. According to the rehydration products, it was found that portlandite crystallizes in the middle of the crack while C-S-H gel accumulates only on the crack surface. Moreover, the ions transport depths in cracked UHPC was simulated by finite difference method. As time increases, chloride ions not only transport vertically along the crack, but also propagate in the horizontal direction of the crack. Mixture proportions have little influence on the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion.

Abstract

In this work, emphasis was placed on the design of a novel nanocomposite for thermal energy storage in the field of green building constructions. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the primary product of cement hydration, was firstly introduced as mesoporous accommodations for lauric acid, from an experimental and theoretical prospective. In detail, C-S-H@LA composite was systematically examined through experiments, in terms of Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller gas sorptometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimeter. Results demonstrated C-S-H@LA was one promising composite PCM with 32.04 kJ kg−1 latent heat capacity, 0.514 W m−1 K−1 thermal conductivity and 91.04% energy storage efficiency. No chemical bonds were found between C-S-H and lauric acid. Notably, stability of C-S-H@LA embracing structural, chemical and thermal properties were also verified. Innovatively, molecular simulation was applied to explain the melting behavior of C-S-H@LA that could be divided into three stages, i.e. acceleration period, stationary period and secondary rising period, based on diffusion coefficient. This work has emerged some new design rules for PCMs fabrication.

The interaction between organic molecules and a metal surface has been intensely discussed these days. In this work, the formation and atomic structure of an inhibitive molecular film are revealed in the combination of molecular dynamics simulation and quantum chemical calculations. Adsorption behavior of 2,5-bis(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PAOX) is systematically investigated either in different forms or in different environments. The results indicates that PAOX is a superior corrosion inhibitor, compatible with various environments, for the film effect of protective film formation as well as the solidification effect of aggressive ions binding. Heterocyclic atoms like nitrogen and oxygen are demonstrated to be the reactive sites supported by the Fukui function. Additionally, it shows that the organometallic bond of monomer complex is partly covalent and ionic while N18 in PAOX shares the dominative position in bonding behavior. Abstract

A new type of inhibitor is studied in this paper. Inhibition efficiency and adsorption behavior of an inhibitor film on the steel surface is tested via the electrochemical method and theoretical calculation to establish the adsorption model. Test results confirm that inhibition efficiency is improved with the addition of an inhibitor, and the inhibitor film is formed firmly by comparing the characteristic peaks of S and N. Moreover, the micro-zone corrosion progress of Fe in 3.5% invasive NaCl-simulated seawater environment is studied. The results further show that corrosion is initiated under the zone without the inhibitor film, while it is prevented under the protection of the film. By the experiments, it is shown that inhibitor can be adsorbed on the surface of steel stably and has excellent protection performance for reinforced rebar, which can be widely used in concrete structure.

33. Prevalence and Altered Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury in China: A Nationwide Survey in 2013.

Abstract

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability annually worldwide. However, the epidemiology of TBI had not been established in China. We conducted a nationally representative door-to-door survey in the general population across all age groups in 31 provinces in mainland China in 2013. Methods: All participants were reviewed for a history of physician-diagnosed TBI by trained investigators using a structured questionnaire. TBI survivors were considered as prevalent cases at the prevalent time. The present study also examined the odds of TBI as a function of sex, age, and other demographical variables using logistic regression model. Results: Of 583,870 participants, 2,673 individuals had suffered from a TBI during their past life, yielding a weighted prevalence of being 442.4 (95% CI 342.2–542.6) per 100,000 person. The TBI prevalence increased with increasing age. The present study observed the multiadjusted ORs of TBI were 1.9 (95% CI 1.8–2.1) for the male, 1.9 (95% CI 1.2–3.1) for the farmers, 1.9 (95% CI 1.2–3.3) for the retiree or homemakers, 3.4 (95% CI 1.5–7.7), and 2.8 (95% CI 1.1–6.6) for those whose education were primary school and high school, respectively. The most common external cause was road traffic accidents among those who were aged 18–34 years old and those whose educational levels were middle school in both genders. Conclusions: Our results indicate TBI was substantially prevalent among Chinese population and underscore the need to develop national strategies to improve the safe education on road and traffic of TBI in rural residents and some subgroup population.
