Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a high performance four-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), enabled by a figure-8 compound-ring-cavity (F8-CRC) filter for single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) selection and a polarization-managed four-channel filter (PM-FCF) for defining four lasing wavelengths. We introduce a novel methodology utilizing signal-flow graph combined with Mason's rule to analyze a CRC filter in general and apply it to obtain the important design parameters for the F8-CRC filter used in this paper. By combining the functions of the F8-CRC filter and the PM-FCF filter assisted by the enhanced polarization hole-burning and polarization dependent loss, we achieve the EDFL with fifteen lasing states, including four single-, six dual-, four tri- and one quad-wavelength lasing operations. In particular, all the four single-wavelength operations are in stable SLM oscillation, typically with a linewidth of <600 Hz, a RIN of <=-154.58 dB/Hz@>=3 MHz and an output power fluctuation of <=+/-3.45%. In addition, all the six dual-wavelength operations have very similar performances, with the performance parameters close to those of the single-wavelength lasing operations. Finally, we achieve the wavelength spacing tuning of the dual-wavelength operations for the photonic generation of tunable microwave signals, and successfully obtain a signal at 23.10 GHz as a demonstration., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

10. Compact, Scalable and Flexible Multi-Mode-Converting Model Employing Subwavelength Gratings

Abstract

Orthogonal eigenmodes in multimode waveguides are an indispensable physical dimension for enhancing the capacity of optical communications, and efficient mode converters are therefore of vital functional significance. However, the conventional single-pair mode conversion in a single device is having difficulty meeting the ever-increasing demand for optical capacity. By contrast, the multi-pair mode converter can improve the multiplexing capacity and be further applied in spatial-mode-oriented passive signal switching and permutation cipher. Here, a scalable multi-mode converting model, combing the multimode interference and beam shaping by exploiting subwavelength metamaterials, is firstly reported to enable simultaneous multi-spatial-mode manipulation and break its polarization-dependency limit. Based on this model, five proof-of-concept converters are designed, realizing polarization-independent, and multi-mode conversions, or a combination of both within compact lengths (&lt; 17.436 μm). For the first time, TE0/TM0-to-TE2/TM2, TE0/TE1/TE2-to-TE2/TE3/ TE4, TE0/TE1/TM0/TM1-to-TE2/TE3/TM2/TM3, and TE0/TE1-to-TE1/TE2 converters are reported and experimentally demonstrated, covering a double/triple/quadruple-mode manipulation in a single device. From measurements, these converters exhibit low insertion losses (0.72 to 1.65 dB) and intermodal crosstalks (−30.26 to −12.19 dB) at 1550 nm, and have a 56-nm/30-nm bandwidth of loss &lt; 1.4 dB/1.9 dB and crosstalk &lt; −13 dB/−10.5 dB, for the best/worst case. The proposed multi-mode converting model can manipulate multiple input modes in parallel and beak the polarization-dependency limit for multi-spatial-mode conversion, which holds great potential for spatial-mode-oriented nanophotonic systems.

Abstract

A wavelength-tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) narrow-linewidth thulium/holmium co-doped fiber laser (THDFL) was developed in this study. The lasing wavelength was determined by combining a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) and a uniform FBG (UFBG). SLM oscillation was achieved by incorporating a dual-coupler ring filter with the PS-FBG. At a pump power of 2.0 W, the THDFL exhibited excellent SLM lasing performance with a stable optical spectrum. It operated at an output wavelength of ~2050 nm with an optical signal-to-noise ratio of >81 dB, an output power fluctuation of 0.15 dB, a linewidth of 8.468 kHz, a relative intensity noise of ≤−140.32 dB/Hz@≥5 MHz, a slope efficiency of 2.15%, and a threshold power of 436 mW. The lasing wavelength tunability was validated experimentally by stretching the PS-FBG and UFBG simultaneously. The proposed THDFL had significant potential for application in many fields, including free-space optical communication, LiDAR, and high-precision spectral measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
