Gauge fields are ubiquitous in modern quantum physics. In superfluids, quantized vortices can be induced by gauge fields. Here we demonstrate the first experimental observation of vortex nucleations in spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates under radially-localized synthetic magnetic fields. The associated gauge potentials $\vec{A}$ are azimuthal and created by light-induced spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling, generating circulating azimuthal velocity fields $\propto \vec{p}-\vec{A}$ even when the canonical momentum $\vec{p}= 0$. A sufficiently large azimuthal velocity peaked near the condensate center results in a dynamically unstable localized excitation that initiates vortex nucleations. This excitation appears as a spontaneously-formed vortex-antivortex pair near the cloud center. Following the initially developed instability, the dynamics is governed by the asymmetry and dissipation, where the atomic orbital angular momentum evolves and can reach the value of the ground state. Our system exhibits dynamical and Landau instabilities and agrees reasonably with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii simulations.

To date, various formation channels of merging events have been heavily explored with the detection of nearly 100 double black hole (BH) merger events reported by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) Collaboration. We here systematically investigate an alternative formation scenario, i.e., binary BHs (BBHs) formed through double helium stars (hereafter double-core evolution channel). In this scenario, the two helium stars (He-rich stars) could be the outcome of the classical isolated binary evolution scenario involving with and without common-envelope phase (i.e., CE channel and stable mass transfer channel), or alternatively of massive close binaries evolving chemically homogeneously (i.e., CHE channel). We perform detailed stellar structure and binary evolution calculations that take into account internal differential rotation and mass loss of He-rich stars, as well as tidal interactions in binaries. For double He-rich stars with equal masses in binaries, we find that tides start to be at work on the Zero Age Helium Main Sequence (ZAHeMS: the time when a He-rich star starts to burn helium in the core, which is analogous to ZAMS for core hydrogen burning) for initial orbital periods not longer than 1.0 day, depending on the initial metallicities. Besides the stellar mass loss rate and tidal interactions in binaries, we find that the role of the angular momentum transport efficiency in determining the resulting BH spins, becomes stronger when considering BH progenitors originated from a higher metal-metallicity environment. The noncentrosymmetric transition metal monopnictides NbP, TaP, NbAs and TaAs are a family of Weyl semimetals in which pairs of protected linear crossings of spin-resolved bands occur. These so-called Weyl nodes are characterized by integer topological charges of opposite sign associated with singular points of Berry curvature in momentum space. In such a system anomalous magnetoelectric responses are predicted, which should only occur if the crossing points are close to the Fermi level and enclosed by Fermi surface pockets penetrated by an integer flux of Berry curvature, dubbed Weyl pockets. TaAs was shown to possess Weyl pockets whereas TaP and NbP have trivial pockets enclosing zero net flux of Berry curvature. Here, via measurements of the magnetic torque, resistivity and magnetisation, we present a comprehensive quantum oscillation study of NbAs, the last member of this family where the precise shape and nature of the Fermi surface pockets is still unknown. We detect six distinct frequency branches, two of which have not been observed before. A comparison to density functional theory calculations suggests that the two largest pockets are topologically trivial, whereas the low frequencies might stem from tiny Weyl pockets. The enclosed Weyl nodes are within a few meV of the Fermi energy.

Recently, HfSiS was found to be a new type of Dirac semimetal with a line of Dirac nodes in the band structure. Meanwhile, Rashba-split surface states are also pronounced in this compound. Here we report a systematic study of HfSiS by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at low temperature and high magnetic field. The Rashba-split surface states are characterized by measuring Landau quantization and standing waves, which reveal a quasi-linear dispersive band structure. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory are conducted and compared with the experimental results. Based on these investigations, the properties of the Rashba-split surface states and their interplay with defects and collective modes are discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We employ {\it ab-initio} fully-relativistic electronic structure calculations to study the stability of the Weyl points in the momentum space within the class of the half-metallic ferromagnetic full Heusler materials, by focusing on Co$_2$TiAl as a well-established prototype compound. Here we show that both the number of the Weyl points together with their $k$-space coordinates can be controlled by the orientation of the magnetization. This alternative degree of freedom, which is absent in other topological materials (e.g. in Weyl semimetals), introduces novel functionalities, specific for the class of half-metallic ferromagnets. Of special interest are Weyl points which are preserved irrespectively of any arbitrary rotation of the magnetization axis.

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) represent a new state of quantum matter recently discovered that offers a platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. A TDS is characterized by the linear touching of bulk (conduction and valance) bands at discrete points in the momentum space (i.e. 3D Dirac points), such as in Na3Bi and Cd3As2. More recently, new types of Dirac semimetals with robust Dirac line-nodes (with non-trivial topology or near the critical point between topological phase transitions) have been proposed that extends the bulk linear touching from discrete points to 1D lines. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we explored the electronic structure of the non-symmorphic crystals MSiS (M=Hf, Zr). Remarkably, by mapping out the band structure in the full 3D Brillouin Zone (BZ), we observed two sets of Dirac line-nodes in parallel with the kz-axis and their dispersions. Interestingly, along directions other than the line-nodes in the 3D BZ, the bulk degeneracy is lifted by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in both compounds with larger magnitude in HfSiS. Our work not only experimentally confirms a new Dirac line-node semimetal family protected by non-symmorphic symmetry, but also helps understanding and further exploring the exotic properties as well as practical applications of the MSiS family of compounds., Comment: 5 figures

We report on the pressure evolution of the Fermi surface topology of the Weyl semimetal NbP, probed by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance combined with ab-initio calculations of the band-structure. Although we observe a drastic effect on the amplitudes of the quantum oscillations, the frequencies only exhibit a weak pressure dependence up to 2.8 GPa. The pressure-induce variations in the oscillation frequencies are consistent with our band-structure calculations. Furthermore, we can relate the changes in the amplitudes to small modifications in the shape of the Fermi surface. Our findings evidenced the stability of the electronic band structure of NbP and demonstrate the power of combining quantum-oscillation studies and band-structure calculations to investigate pressure effects on the Fermi-surface topology in Weyl semimetals., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report a study of the magnetic and electronic properties of the non-centrosymmetric half-Heusler antiferromagnet HoPdBi ($T_N = 2.0$ K). Magnetotransport measurements show HoPdBi has a semimetallic behaviour with a carrier concentration $n=3.7 \times 10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ extracted from the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The magnetic phase diagram in the field-temperature plane has been determined by transport, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements: magnetic order is suppressed at $B_M\sim 3.6$ T for $T \rightarrow 0$. Superconductivity with $T_c \sim 1.9$ K is found in the antiferromagnetic phase. Ac-susceptibility measurements provide solid evidence for bulk superconductivity below $T_c = 0.75$ K with a screening signal close to a volume fraction of 100 %. The upper critical field shows an unusual linear temperature variation with $B_{c2}(T \rightarrow 0) = 1.1$ T. We also report electronic structure calculations that classify HoPdBi as a new topological semimetal, with a non-trivial band inversion of 0.25 eV., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The enrichment formulation of double-interpolation finite element method (DFEM) is developed in this paper. DFEM is first proposed by Zheng \emph{et al} (2011) and it requires two stages of interpolation to construct the trial function. The first stage of interpolation is the same as the standard finite element interpolation. Then the interpolation is reproduced by an additional procedure using the nodal values and nodal gradients which are derived from the first stage as interpolants. The re-constructed trial functions are now able to produce continuous nodal gradients, smooth nodal stress without post-processing and higher order basis without increasing the total degrees of freedom. Several benchmark numerical examples are performed to investigate accuracy and efficiency of DFEM and enriched DFEM. When compared with standard FEM, super-convergence rate and better accuracy are obtained by DFEM. For the numerical simulation of crack propagation, better accuracy is obtained in the evaluation of displacement norm, energy norm and the stress intensity factor.

There are recent interests with CsI(Tl) scintillating crystals for Dark Matter experiments. The key merit is the capability to differentiate nuclear recoil (nr) signatures from the background $\beta / \gamma$-events due to ambient radioactivity on the basis of their different pulse shapes. One of the major experimental challenges is to perform such pulse shape analysis in the statistics-limited domain where the light output is close to the detection threshold. Using data derived from measurements with low energy $\gamma$'s and nuclear recoils due to neutron elastic scatterings, it was verified that the pulse shapes between $\beta / \gamma$-events are different. Several methods of pulse shape discrimination are studied, and their relative merits are compared. Full digitization of the pulse shapes is crucial to achieve good discrimination. Advanced software techniques with mean time, neural network and likelihood ratios give rise to satisfactory performance, and are superior to the conventional Double Charge method commonly applied at higher energies. Pulse shape discrimination becomes effective starting at a light yield of about 20 photo-electrons. This corresponds to a detection threshold of about 5 keV electron-equivalence energy, or 40$-$50 keV recoil kinetic energy, in realistic experiments., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures
