Search

Topological insulators are materials with an insulating bulk interior while maintaining gapless boundary states against back scattering. Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is a prototypical topological insulator with a Dirac-cone surface state around $\Gamma$. Here, we present a controlled methodology to gradually remove Se atoms from the surface Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se quintuple layers, eventually forming bilayer-Bi on top of the quintuple bulk. Our method allows us to track the topological surface state and confirm its robustness throughout the surface modification. Importantly, we report a relocation of the topological Dirac cone in both real space and momentum space, as the top surface layer transitions from quintuple Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se to bilayer-Bi. Additionally, charge transfer among different surface layers is identified. Superconducting qubits are a key contender for quantum computing elements, but they often face challenges like noise and decoherence from two-level systems (TLS). Tantalum (Ta) qubits are notable for their long T$_1$ coherence times nearing milliseconds, mainly due to fewer TLS, though the cause was unclear. Our research explored this by analyzing the air-oxide interface with density functional theory, particularly comparing Nb oxide (Nb$_2$O$_5$) and Ta oxide (Ta$_2$O$_5$). We discovered that Ta$_2$O$_5$ forms a smoother surface with fewer dangling O atoms and TLS than Nb$_2$O$_5$. The greater atomic mass of Ta also lowers the TLS tunnel splittings below the qubit's operating frequency. Furthermore, using external electric fields or SO$_2$ passivation can significantly reduce TLS on Nb surfaces, potentially improving their coherence times.

Manipulating thermal properties in materials has been of fundamental importance for advancing innovative technologies. Heat carriers such as phonons are impeded by breaking crystal symmetry or periodicity. Notable methods of impeding the phonon propagation include varying the density of defects, interfaces, and nanostructures, as well as changing composition. However, a robust link between the individual nanoscale defect structures, phonon states, and macroscopic thermal conductivity is lacking. Here we reveal from nanoscale structure-phonon mechanisms on how the grain boundary (GB) tilt and twist angles fundamentally drive the changes in atom rearrangements, exotic vibrational states, and finally macroscopic heat transport at different bicrystal strontium titanate GBs using emerging atomic resolution vibrational spectroscopy. The 10 deg and 22 deg tilt GBs exhibit reduced phonon populations by 54% and 16% compared to the bulk value, respectively, consistent with measured thermal conductivities. A tiny twist angle further introduces a fine and local tunning of thermal conductivity by introducing twist induced defects periodically embedded with the tilt induced GB defects. Our results demonstrate that varying the tilt angle coarsely modifies the phonon population along entire GB while varying the twist angle incurs a finer adjustment at periodic locations on the GB. Our study offers a systematic approach to understanding and manipulating cross GB thermal transport of arbitrary GBs predictably and precisely.

Single photon emitters (SPEs) hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are essential elementary building blocks for enabling future on-chip quantum photonic technologies that operate at room temperature. However, fundamental challenges, such as managing non-radiative decay, competing incoherent processes, as well as engineering difficulties in achieving deterministic placement and scaling of the emitters, limit their full potential. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate large-area arrays of plasmonic nanoresonators for Purcell-induced site-controlled SPEs by engineering emitter-cavity coupling and enhancing radiative emission at room temperature. The plasmonic nanoresonator architecture consists of gold-coated silicon pillars capped with an alumina spacer layer, enabling a 10-fold local field enhancement in the emission band of native hBN defects. Confocal photoluminescence and second-order autocorrelation measurements show bright SPEs with sub-30 meV bandwidth and a saturated emission rate of more than 3.8 million counts per second. We measure a Purcell factor of 4.9, enabling average SPE lifetimes of 480 ps, a five-fold reduction as compared to emission from gold-free devices, along with an overall SPE yield of 21%. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the beneficial role of an alumina spacer between defected hBN and gold, as an insulating layer can mitigate the electronic broadening of emission from defects proximal to gold. Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) show great promise as quantum bits (qubits) but continue to be hindered by flux noise. The flux noise power spectra of SQUIDs go as $1/f^\alpha$, where $\alpha$ is the temperature-dependent noise exponent. Experiments find $0.5 \lesssim \alpha \lesssim 1$. Furthermore, experiments find that the noise power spectra versus frequency at different temperatures pivot about or cross at a common point for each SQUID. To try to better understand the results and motivated by experimental evidence that magnetic moments on the surface of SQUIDS produce flux noise, we present the results of our Monte Carlo simulations of various spin systems on 2D lattices. We find that only spin glasses produce $\alpha \sim 1$ at low temperature. We find that aliasing of the noise power spectra at high frequencies can lead to spectral pivoting if it is in proximity to a knee at a slightly lower frequency. We show that the pivot frequency depends on the method of site selection and how often the magnetization is recorded. Magnetic skyrmions, topologically nontrivial whirling spin textures at nanometer scales, have emerged as potential information carriers for spintronic devices. The ability to efficiently create and erase magnetic skyrmions is vital yet challenging for such applications. Based on first-principles studies, we find that switching between intrinsic magnetic skyrmion and high-temperature ferromagnetic states can be achieved in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) multiferroic heterostructure CrSeI/In2Te3 by reversing the ferroelectric polarization of In2Te3. The core mechanism of this switching is traced to the controllable magnetic anisotropy of CrSeI influenced by the ferroelectric polarization of In2Te3. We propose a useful descriptor linking the presence of magnetic skyrmions to magnetic parameters, and validate this connection through studies of a variety of similar vdW multiferroic heterostructures. Topological and valleytronic materials are promising for spintronic and quantum applications due to their unique properties. Using first principles calculations, we demonstrate that germanene (Ge)-based ferromagnetic heterostructures can exhibit multiple quantum states such as quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) with Chern numbers of C=-1 or C=-2, quantum valley Hall effect (QVHE) with a valley Chern number of C$v$=2, valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect (VP-QAHE) with two Chern numbers of C=-1 and C$v$=-1 as well as time-reversal symmetry broken quantum spin Hall effect (T-broken QSHE) with a spin Chern number of C$s$~1. Furthermore, we find that the transitions between different quantum states can occur by changing the magnetic orientation of ferromagnetic layers through applying a magnetic field. We explore the inelastic electron scattering in SrTiO3, PbTiO3, and SiC in their phonon energy range, challenging the assumption that phonon polaritons are excluded at large angles in high-resolution transmission electron energy-loss spectroscopy. We demonstrate that through multiple scattering, the electron beam can excite both phonons and phonon polaritons, and the relative proportion of each varies depending on the structure factor and scattering angle. Integrating dielectric theory, density functional theory, and multi-slice simulations, we provide a comprehensive framework for understanding these interactions in materials with polar optical phonons.

The underlying dielectric properties of materials, intertwined with intriguing phenomena such as topological polariton modes and anisotropic thermal conductivities, stem from the anisotropy in atomic vibrations. Conventionally, X-ray diffraction techniques have been employed to estimate thermal ellipsoids of distinct elements, albeit lacking the desired spatial and energy resolutions. Here we introduce a novel approach utilizing the dark-field monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy for momentum-selective vibrational spectroscopy, enabling the cartographic delineation of variations of phonon polarization vectors. By applying this technique to centrosymmetric cubic-phase strontium titanate, we successfully discern two types of oxygen atoms exhibiting contrasting vibrational anisotropies below and above 60 meV due to their frequency-linked thermal ellipsoids. This method establishes a new pathway to visualize phonon eigenvectors at specific crystalline sites for diverse elements, thus delving into uncharted realms of dielectric, optical, and thermal property investigations with unprecedented spatial resolutions.

Low-symmetry van der Waals materials have enabled strong confinement of mid-infrared light through hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) at the nanoscale. Yet, the bottleneck persists in manipulating the intrinsic polaritonic dispersion to drive further progress in phonon-polaritonics. Here, we present a thermomechanical strategy to manipulate the HPhPs in $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ using high pressure and temperature treatment. The hot pressing engineers the stoichiometry of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ by controllably introducing oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs), which cause a semiconductor-to-semimetal transition. Our density functional theory and finite-difference time-domain results, combined with experimental studies show that the OVDs induce a metastable metallic state by reducing the bandgap while modifying the intrinsic dielectric permittivity of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$. Photo-induced force microscopy confirms an average dielectric permittivity tunability of $|\Delta\varepsilon/\varepsilon|\approx0.35$ within a Reststrahlen band of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$, resulting in drastic shifts in the HPhP dispersion. The polariton lifetimes for pristine and hot-pressed flakes were measured as $0.92 \pm 0.06$ and $0.86 \pm 0.11$ ps, respectively, exhibiting a loss of only 7%, while the group velocity exhibited an increase of $38.8 \pm 0.2$%. The OVDs in $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ provide a low-loss platform that enables active tuning of mid-infrared HPhPs and have a profound impact on applications in super-resolution imaging, nanoscale thermal manipulation, boosted molecular sensing, and on-chip photonic circuits., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures, supporting information

Magnetic hysteresis has become a crucial aspect for characterizing single-molecule magnets, but the comprehension of the coercivity mechanism is still a challenge. By using analytical derivation and quantum dynamical simulations, we reveal fundamental rules that govern magnetic relaxation of single molecule magnets under the influence of external magnetic fields, which in turn dictates the hysteresis behavior. Specifically, we find that energy level crossing induced by magnetic fields can drastically increase the relaxation rate and set a coercivity limit. The activation of optical-phonon-mediated quantum tunneling accelerates the relaxation and largely determines the coercivity. Intra-molecular exchange interaction in multi-ion compounds may enhance the coercivity by suppressing key relaxation processes. Unpaired bonding electrons in mixed-valence complexes bear a pre-spin-flip process, which may facilitate magnetization reversal. This study aims to investigate the interplay between chiral-induced spin-orbit coupling along the screw axis and antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) in the normal plane within a chiral crystal, using both general model analysis and first-principles simulations of InSeI, a chiral van der Waals crystal. While chiral molecules of light atoms typically exhibit spin selectivity only along the screw axis, chiral crystals with heavier atoms can have strong ASOC effects that influence spin-momentum locking in all directions. The resulting phase diagram of spin texture shows the potential for controlling phase transition and flipping spin by reducing symmetry through surface cleavage, thickness reduction or strain. We also experimentally synthesized high-quality InSeI crystals of the thermodynamically stable achiral analogue which showed exposed (110) facets corresponding to single-handed helices to demonstrate the potential of material realization for higher-dimensional spin selectivity in the development of spintronic devices.

Controlling materials to create and tune topological phases of matter could potentially be used to explore new phases of topological quantum matter and to create novel devices where the carriers are topologically protected. It has been demonstrated that a trivial insulator can be converted into a topological state by modulating the spin-orbit interaction or the crystal lattice. However, there are limited methods to controllably and efficiently tune the crystal lattice and at the same time perform electronic measurements at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we use large controllable strain to demonstrate the topological phase transition from a weak topological insulator phase to a strong topological insulator phase in high-quality HfTe5 samples. After applying high strain to HfTe5 and converting it into a strong topological insulator, we found that the sample's resistivity increased by more than two orders of magnitude (24,000%) and that the electronic transport is dominated by the topological surface states at cryogenic temperatures. Our findings show that HfTe5 is an ideal material for engineering topological properties, and it could be generalized to study topological phase transitions in van der Waals materials and heterostructures. These results can pave the way to create novel devices with applications ranging from spintronics to fault-tolerant topologically protected quantum computers.

Intrinsic topological superconducting materials are exotic and vital to develop the next-generation topological superconducting devices, topological quantum calculations, and quantum information technologies. Here, we predict the topological and nodal superconductivity of MS (M = Nb and Ta) transition-metal sulfides by using the density functional theory for superconductors combining with the symmetry indicators. We reveal their higher-order topology nature with an index of Z4 = 2. These materials have a higher Tc than the Nb or Ta metal superconductors due to their flat-band and strong electron-phonon coupling nature. Electron doping and lighter isotopes can effectively enhance the Tc. Our findings show that the MS (M = Nb and Ta) systems can be new platforms to study exotic physics in the higher-order topological superconductors, and provide a theoretical support to utilize them as the topological superconducting devices in the field of advanced topological quantum calculations and information technologies., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has unique advantages in topotronic applications, but it is still challenging to realize the QAHE with tunable magnetic and topological properties for building functional devices. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we predict that the in-plane magnetization induced QAHE with Chern numbers C = $\pm$1 and the out-of-plane magnetization induced QAHE with high Chern numbers C = $\pm$3 can be realized in a single material candidate, which is composed of van der Waals (vdW) coupled Bi and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ monolayers. The switching between different phases of QAHE can be controllable by multiple ways, such as applying strain or (weak) magnetic field or twisting the vdW materials. The prediction of an experimentally available material system hosting robust, highly tunable QAHE will stimulate great research interest in the field. Confining materials to two-dimensional forms changes the behavior of electrons and enables new devices. However, most materials are challenging to produce as uniform thin crystals. Here, we present a new synthesis approach where crystals are grown in a nanoscale mold defined by atomically-flat van der Waals (vdW) materials. By heating and compressing bismuth in a vdW mold made of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), we grow ultraflat bismuth crystals less than 10 nanometers thick. Due to quantum confinement, the bismuth bulk states are gapped, isolating intrinsic Rashba surface states for transport studies. The vdW-molded bismuth shows exceptional electronic transport, enabling the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations originating from the (111) surface state Landau levels, which have eluded previous studies. By measuring the gate-dependent magnetoresistance, we observe multi-carrier quantum oscillations and Landau level splitting, with features originating from both the top and bottom surfaces. Our vdW-mold growth technique establishes a platform for electronic studies and control of bismuth's Rashba surface states and topological boundary modes. Beyond bismuth, the vdW-molding approach provides a low-cost way to synthesize ultrathin crystals and directly integrate them into a vdW heterostructure.

Recently the kagome compounds have inspired enormous interest and made some great progress such as in the field of superconductivity and topology. Here we predict a different kagome magnesium triboride (MgB3) superconductor with a calculated Tc ~12.2 K and Tc ~15.4 K by external stress, the potentially highest among the reported diverse kagome-type superconductors. We reveal its various exotic physical properties including the van Hove singularity, flat-band, multiple Dirac points, and nontrivial topology. The system can be described by a two-band model with highly anisotropic superconducting gaps on Fermi surfaces. Its topological and nodal superconducting nature is unveiled by a recently developed symmetry indicators method. Our results suggest that MgB3 can be a new platform to study exotic physics in the kagome structure, and pave a way to seek for more superconductors and topological materials with XY3-type kagome lattice., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus materials and their heterostructures offer fertile platforms for designing fascinating functionalities. Here, by means of systematic first-principles studies on van der Waals Janus monolayer Cr-based dichalcogenide halides CrYX (Y=S, Se, Te; X=Cl, Br, I), we find that CrSX (X=Cl, Br, I) are the very desirable high TC ferromagnetic semiconductors with an out-of-plane magnetization. Excitingly, by the benefit of the large magnetic moments on ligand S2- anions, the sought-after large-gap quantum anomalous Hall effect and sizable valley splitting can be achieved through the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructures CrSBr/Bi2Se3/CrSBr and MoTe2/CrSBr, respectively. Additionally, we show that large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions give rise to skyrmion states in CrTeX (X=Cl, Br, I) under external magnetic fields. Oxide solid electrolytes (OSEs) have the potential to achieve improved safety and energy density for lithium-ion batteries, but their high grain-boundary (GB) resistance is a general bottleneck. In the most well studied perovskite OSE, Li3xLa2/3-xTiO3 (LLTO), the ionic conductivity of GBs is about three orders of magnitude lower than that of the bulk. In contrast, the related Li0.375Sr0.4375Ta0.75Zr0.25O3 (LSTZ0.75) perovskite exhibits low GB resistance for reasons yet unknown. Here, we used aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy, along with an active learning moment tensor potential, to reveal the atomic scale structure and composition of LSTZ0.75 GBs. Vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy is applied for the first time to characterize the otherwise unmeasurable Li distribution in GBs of LSTZ0.75. We found that Li depletion, which is a major reason for the low GB ionic conductivity of LLTO, is absent for the GBs of LSTZ0.75. Instead, the low GB resistivity of LSTZ0.75 is attributed to the formation of a unique defective cubic perovskite interfacial structure that contained abundant vacancies. Our study provides insights into the atomic scale mechanisms of low GB resistivity and sheds light on possible paths for designing OSEs with high total ionic conductivity.

In two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators, the corner states are separated by a non-negligible distance. The crystalline symmetries protect the robustness of their corner states with long-range entanglement, which are robust against time-reversal breaking perturbations. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of direct control of the topological corner states by introducing the spin degree of freedom in a rhombus-shaped Kekul\'{e} nanostructure with local magnetization and local electric potential. By applying a local magnetization on one corner, the other corner can also be strongly spin polarized. By further applying a local electric potential at the same corner, the sign of the spin polarization can be reversed at both corners. We demonstrate the material realization in a $\gamma$-graphyne nanostructure with Mn adsorption and Si replacement at one corner by using the first-principles calculations. Our studies give a showcase of the remote correlation of quantum states in higher-order topological materials for spintronic and quantum applications.

Using the density functional theory calculations, we studied the ferroelectric, electrical and optical properties of series of bias-controllable endohedral fullerenes (TM@C28, TM= Ti-Ni). The important finding is that Cr@C28 has a large electric dipole moment and an appropriate bandgap (~1.2eV) as building blocks for ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials. By sandwiching Cr@C28 molecules between two van der Waals layers, e.g., graphene or transition metal dichalcogenides, the heterostructures may have exotic ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties with high tunability and performance.

Searching for novel two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial for the development of the next generation technologies such as electronics, optoelectronics, electrochemistry and biomedicine. In this work, we designed a series of 2D materials based on endohedral fullerenes, and revealed that many of them integrate different functions in a single system, such as ferroelectricity with large electric dipole moments, multiple magnetic phases with both strong magnetic anisotropy and high Curie temperature, quantum spin Hall effect or quantum anomalous Hall effect with robust topologically protected edge states. We further proposed a new style topological field-effect transistor. These findings provide a strategy of using fullerenes as building blocks for the synthesis of novel 2D materials which can be easily controlled with a local electric field.

We report a comprehensive high-pressure study on the antiferromagnetic topological insulator EuSn2As2 up to 21.1 GPa through measurements of synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, magnetic resistance, and Hall transports combined with first-principles calculations. No evident trace of a structural phase transition is detected. The Neel temperatures determined from resistance are increased from 24 to 77 K under pressure, which is resulted from the enhanced magnetic exchange couplings between Eu2+ ions yielded by our first-principles calculations. The negative magnetoresistance of EuSn2As2 persists to higher temperatures accordantly. However, the enhancement of the observed N\'eel temperatures deviates from the calculations obviously above 10.0 GPa. In addition, the magnitude of the magnetoresistance, the Hall coefficients, and the charge carrier densities show abrupt changes between 6.9 to 10.0 GPa. The abrupt changes probably originate from a pressure induced valence change of Eu ions from a divalent state to a divalent and trivalent mixed state. In transport, the topological Hall effect (THE) presents itself as non-monotonic features (or humps and dips) in the Hall signal and is widely interpreted as a sign of chiral spin textures, like magnetic skyrmions. However, when anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is also present, the co-existence of two AHEs could give rise to similar artifacts, making it difficult to distinguish between genuine THE with AHE and two-component AHE. Here we confirm genuine THE with AHE by means of transport and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy, in which magnetic skyrmions are directly observed, and find that genuine THE occurs in the transition region of the AHE. In sharp contrast, the artifact "THE", or two-component AHE occurs well beyond the saturation of the "AHE component" (under the false assumption of THE+AHE). Furthermore, we distinguish artifact "THE" from genuine THE by three methods: 1. Minor loops, 2. Temperature dependence, 3. Gate dependence. Minor loops of genuine THE with AHE are always within the full loop, while minor loops of the artifact "THE" may reveal a single loop that cannot fit into the "AHE component". Besides, the temperature or gate dependence of the artifact "THE" may also be accompanied by a polarity change of the "AHE component", as the non-monotonic features vanish, while the temperature dependence of genuine THE with AHE reveals no such change. Our work may help future researchers to exercise cautions and use these methods to examine carefully in order to ascertain genuine THE.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are essential for the development of the next-generation spintronic technologies. Recently, layered van der Waals (vdW) compound MnBi2Te4 (MBT) has attracted great interest, and its 2D structure has been reported to host coexisting magnetism and topology. Here, we design several conceptual nanodevices based on MBT monolayer (MBT-ML) and reveal their spin-dependent transport properties by means of the first-principles calculations. The pn-junction diodes and sub-3-nm pin-junction field-effect transistors (FETs) show a strong rectifying effect and a spin filtering effect, with an ideality factor n close to 1 even at a reasonably high temperature. In addition, the pip- and nin-junction FETs give an interesting negative differential resistive (NDR) effect. The gate voltages can tune currents through these FETs in a large range. Furthermore, the MBT-ML has a strong response to light. A new multifunctional 2D material is theoretically predicted based on systematic ab-initio calculations and model simulations for the honeycomb lattice of endohedral fullerene W@C28 molecules. It has structural bistability, ferroelectricity, multiple magnetic phases, and excellent valley characters and can be easily functionalized by the proximity effect with magnetic isolators such as MnTiO3. Furthermore, we may also manipulate the valley Hall and spin transport properties by selectively switch a few W@C28 molecules to the metastable phase. These findings pave a new way in integrate different functions in a single 2D material for technological innovations.

Well-protected magnetization, tunable quantum states and long coherence time are desired for the use of magnetic molecules in spintronics and quantum information technologies. In this work, endohedral fullerene molecules M@C28 with different transition metal cores were explored through systematic first-principles calculations and spin dynamics analyses. Many of them have stable magnetization, giant magnetic anisotropy energy and bias-tunable structure. In particular, some of them may have coherence time up to several milliseconds for their quantum spin states at high temperature (~10K) after full consideration of spin-vibration couplings. These results suggest that these M@C28 provide a rich pool for the development of single-molecule magnets, magnetic molecular junctions, and molecular qubits.

Finding new two-dimensional (2D) materials with novel quantum properties is highly desirable for technological innovations. In this work, we studied a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal cores and discovered various attractive properties, such as room-temperature magnetic ordering, strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, huge topological band gap (>200meV), and excellent spin-filtering performance. As many MOFs have been successfully synthesized in experiments, our results suggest realistic new 2D functional materials for the design of spintronic nanodevices.

The Raman exponent of single-molecular magnetic relaxation may take various unexpected values because of rich phonon spectrum and spin-phonon coupling of molecular crystals. We systematically examine the origins of different abnormalities, and clarify misunderstandings in the past, particularly the appropriateness of the fitting procedures for the exponents. We find that exponential laws raised by optical phonons can yield spurious power laws with low exponents. This observation indicates long-standing misunderstandings for origins of low Raman exponents in a large bulk of single-molecule magnets. Resulting from spin-lattice coupling with optical modes, presence of these exponents suggests the importance of the local dynamical environment for the magnetic relaxation in this regime., Comment: Published version

Nanomagnets with giant magnetic anisotropy energy and long coherence time are desired for various technological innovations such as quantum information procession and storage. Based on the first-principles calculations and model analyses, we demonstrate that a single uranium atom substituting Al on the Al2O3(0001) surface may have high structural stability and large magnetic anisotropy energy up to 48 meV per uranium atom. As the magnetization resides in the localized f-shell and is not much involved in chemical bonding with neighbors, long coherence time up to ~1.6 mS can be achieved for the quantum spin states. These results suggest a new strategy for the search of ultrasmall magnetic units for diverse applications in the quantum information era.

The spin-selective transport through helical molecules has been a hot topic in condensed matter physics, because it develops a new research direction in spintronics, \emph{i.e.}, chiro-spintronics. Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) molecules have been considered as promising candidates to study this topic, since the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in dsDNA was observed in experiment. Considering that the dsDNA molecules are usually flexible in mechanical properties, vibration may be one of important factors to influence the CISS effect. Here, we investigate the influences of electron-vibration interaction (EVI) on the spin-selective transport in dsDNA molecules. We uncover that the EVI not only enhances the CISS effect and the spin polarization ($P_s$) in dsDNA, but also induces a series of new spin-splitting transmission modes. More interesting, these vibration-induced transmission spectra tend to host the same $P_s$ values as those of the original spin-splitting transmission modes, making the $P_s$ spectra to display as a continuous platform even in the energy gap. Our work not only provides us a deep understanding into the influence of vibrations on the CISS effect in helical molecules, {but also puts forwards a feasible route to detect the vibration-induced spin-polarized transport in low-dimensional molecular systems, Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The intrinsic spin-dependent transport properties of two types of lateral VS2|MoS2 heterojunctions are systematically investigated using first-principles calculations, and their various nanodevices with novel properties are designed. The lateral VS2|MoS2 heterojunction diodes show a perfect rectifying effect and are promising for the applications of Schottky diodes. A large spin-polarization ratio is observed for the A-type device and pure spin-mediated current is then realized. The gate voltage significantly tunes the current and rectification ratio of their field-effect transistors (FETs). In addition, they all have sensitive photoresponse to blue light, and could be used as photodetector and photovoltaic device. Moreover, they generate the effective thermally-driven current when a temperature gratitude appears between the two terminals, suggesting them as potential thermoelectric materials. Hence, the lateral VS2|MoS2 heterojunctions show a multifunctional nature and have various potential applications in spintronics, optoelectronics, and spin caloritronics.

Exponential and power law temperature dependences are widely used to fit experimental data of magnetic relaxation time in single molecular magnets. We derived a theory to show how these rules arise from the underling relaxation mechanisms and to clarify the conditions for their occurrence. The theory solves the puzzle of lower-than-expected Orbach barriers found in recent experiments, and elucidates it as a result of the Raman process in disguise. Our results highlight the importance of reducing the rate of direct tunneling between the ground state doublet so as to achieve long time coherence in magnetic molecules. To this end, large spin and small transverse magnetic anisotropy can reduce magnitude of the transition operator, and rigid ligands may weaken the spin-phonon coupling in that they raise the energy of vibrational modes and better screen the acoustic phonons., Comment: Published version

Previous methods for the evaluation of the exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have drawbacks in computational efficiency and are unable to describe cases with semi-infinite substrates. Based on a Green's function surface (GFS) model, here we develop a new approach to efficiently determine the tendency of exfoliation of 2D materials from their bulk crystals or semi-infinite substrates. By constructing appropriate surface configurations, we may calculate the exfoliation energy more precisely and quickly than the traditional way with the slab model. Furthermore, the GFS approach can provide angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of surface systems for direct comparison with experimental data. To explore new materials for the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), we studied electronic, magnetic and topological properties of transition-metal phthalocyanine (TMPc) monolayers in a square lattice. Many of them have large topologically nontrivial band gaps and integer Chern numbers. In particular, the Fermi level of MoPc lies right in the band gap (Eg=8.1 meV) and has large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE=2.0 meV per Mo atom) and a Curie temperature of 16 K, showing its usefulness for applications. The presence of topologically protected edge state in a MoPc nanoribbon further confirms it as a new two-dimensional topological insulator. Several layered transition metal borides can now be realized by a simple and general fabrication method [Fokwa et al.,Adv. Mater. 2018, 30, 1704181],inspiring our interest to transition metal borides monolayer. Here, we predict a new two-dimensional (2D) transition metal diboride MoB2 monolayer (ML) and study its intrinsic mechanical, thermal, electronic, and transport properties. The MoB2 ML has isotropic mechanic properties along the zigzag and armchair directions with a large Young's stiffness, and has an ultralow room-temperature thermal conductivity. The Mo atoms dominate the metallic nature of MoB2 ML. It shows an obvious electrical anisotropy and a current-limiting behavior. Our findings suggest that MoB2 ML is a promising multifunctional material used in ultrathin high-strength mechanical materials, heat insulating materials, electrical-anisotropy-based materials, and current limiters. Among the recently widely studied van der Waals layered magnets CrX3 (X=Cl, Br, I), CrCl3 monolayer (ML) is particularly puzzling as it is solely shown by experiments to have an in-plane magnetic easy axis and, furthermore, all of previous first-principles calculation results contradict this. Through systematical first-principles calculations,we unveil that its in-plane shape anisotropy that dominates over its weak perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy is responsible for the in-plane magnetic easy axis of CrCl3 ML. To tune the in-plane ferromagnetism of CrCl3 ML into the desirable perpendicular one, we propose substituting Cr with isovalent tungsten (W). We find that CrWCl6 has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature up to 76 K. Our work not only gives insight into understanding the two-dimensional ferromagnetism of van der Waals MLs but also sheds new light on engineering their performances for nanodevices., Comment: 4 figures and 12 pages

The electronic transport and photoelectric properties of hydrogenated borophene B4H4, which was realized in a recent experiment by Nishino [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 139, 13761 (2017)], are systematically investigated using the density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function methods. We find that B4H4 exhibits a perfect current-limiting effect and has high (along the zigzag direction) and low (along the armchair one) optional levels due to its strong electrical anisotropy. Moreover, B4H4 can generate sizable photocurrents under illumination, with strong photoelectronic response to blue/green light along the zigzag/armchair direction. Our work demonstrates that B4H4 is promising for the applications of current limiter and photodetectors.
