Search

We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient, EP240408a, by Einstein Probe (EP) and follow-up studies made with EP, Swift, NICER, GROND, ATCA and other ground-based multi-wavelength telescopes. The new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board EP on April 8th, 2024, manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for 12 seconds. The flare reached a peak flux of 3.9x10^(-9) erg/cm2/s in 0.5-4 keV, about 300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the observation. Rapid and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT, Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new transient. Its X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 keV, with a power-law photon index varying within 1.8-2.5. The X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for about 4 days, followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable about 10 days after the initial detection. Based on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations, an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 days is found for EP240408a, which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term transients. No counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared, with the earliest observation at 17 hours after the initial X-ray detection, suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these bands. We demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far, by comparison with, in particular, jetted tidal disruption events, gamma-ray bursts, X-ray binaries and fast blue optical transients. The nature of EP240408a thus remains an enigma. We suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of about 10 days. The geometrically thick dusty torus structure is believed to exist in the nuclear region of galaxies (especially in active galactic nuclei, AGNs). The debris stream from a tidal disruption event (TDE) will possibly collide with the dusty torus and produce a transient flare. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to model the dynamical evolution of the interaction between unbound debris and dusty torus. During the continuous interaction, the shocked material will be spilled out from the interaction region and form an outflow. We calculate the temporal evolution of synchrotron emission by assuming that the shock accelerates a fraction of electrons in the outflow into a non-thermal distribution. We find that radio emission from the debris-torus collision generates a steep-rise and slow-decline radio light curve due to the sharp edge and dense gas of dusty torus, where the radio outburst delays the main optical/X-ray outburst by several years or even several tens of years. We apply our model to a TDE that happened in a narrow-line Seyfert I (PS16dtm), where both the radio spectrum and the light curve can be roughly reproduced. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. The gravitational wave (GW) event GW190521, likely originating from a binary black hole (BBH) merger within an active galactic nucleus (AGN) disk, is associated with the optical flare ZTF19abanrhr. The remnant BHs from BBH mergers can launch the jet and outflow and then interact with the disk medium, which can be responsible for the associated electromagnetic radiations. In this \textit{letter}, we examine the shock breakout and subsequent cooling emissions from four potential components: the outflow, jet head, jet cocoon, and disk cocoon, all driven by the remnant BH within the AGN disk. Using dynamic models and observational constraints, for GW190521, we identify the parameter space for each component and conclude that either the outflow or the disk cocoon could produce the observed electromagnetic signal, with the disk cocoon requiring more extreme parameters. We present a machine learning search for high-redshift ($5.0 < z < 6.5$) quasars using the combined photometric data from the DESI Imaging Legacy Surveys and the WISE survey. We explore the imputation of missing values for high-redshift quasars, discuss the feature selections, compare different machine learning algorithms, and investigate the selections of class ensemble for the training sample, then we find that the random forest model is very effective in separating the high-redshift quasars from various contaminators. The 11-class random forest model can achieve a precision of $96.43\%$ and a recall of $91.53\%$ for high-redshift quasars for the test set. We demonstrate that the completeness of the high-redshift quasars can reach as high as $82.20\%$. The final catalog consists of 216,949 high-redshift quasar candidates with 476 high probable ones in the entire Legacy Surveys DR9 footprint, and we make the catalog publicly available. Using MUSE and DESI-EDR public spectra, we find that 14 true high-redshift quasars (11 in the training sample) out of 21 candidates are correctly identified for MUSE, and 20 true high-redshift quasars (11 in the training sample) out of 21 candidates are correctly identified for DESI-EDR. The theoretical debris supply rate from a tidal disruption of stars can exceed about one hundred times of the Eddington accretion rate for a $10^{6-7}M_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH). It is believed that a strong wind will be launched from the disk surface due to the radiation pressure in the case of super-Eddington accretion, which may be one of the mechanisms for formation of the envelope as observed in tidal disruption events (TDEs). In this work, we explore the evolution of the envelope that formed from the optical thick winds by solving the global solution of the slim-disk model. Our model can roughly reproduce the typical temperature, luminosity and size of the photosphere for TDEs. Based on \texttt{CLOUDY} modeling, we find that, if only considering the radiation-driven disk wind, the emission line luminosities are normally much lower than the typical observational results due to the limited atmosphere mass outside the envelope. We propose that the ejection of the outflow from the self-collision of the stellar debris during the circularization may provide enough matter outside the disk-wind photosphere. Our calculated spectra can roughly reproduce the main properties of several typical emission lines (e.g., $\rm H\alpha$, $\rm H\beta$ and \ion{He}{2}), which was applied well to a TDE candidate AT2018dyb., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The presence of young stars, aged around several million years and situated within the range of $\sim 0.04-1$ pc from our Galactic center raises a question about their origins and dynamical evolutions. Their kinematics provide an opportunity to explore their formation or possible subsequent dynamical evolution. If Sagittarius A* was active in the past as suggested by several observations, the accretion disk may have a significant impact on the dynamics of stars in the Galactic center. The drag force exerted on stars during star-disk interaction could lead some of them to sink into the accretion disk, and these embedded stars will rapidly migrate inward and eventually be disrupted within $\sim10^5$ yr. This could roughly explain the absence of stars within $2.5 \times 10^4 R_{\rm g}$ ($\sim$ 1000 au). Additionally, Kozai-Lidov oscillations, induced by the gravitational perturbation of the disk, could contribute to the bimodal distribution of S-star inclinations and drive a majority of stars into high eccentricity orbits., Comment: accepted by ApJ, comments are welcome

Changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of AGNs that change their spectral type from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. In recent years, a number of changing-look blazars (CLBs) were also reported, which transition between flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL Lacs. The physical properties of CLBs are still unclear. Using the $mclust$ R package for Gaussian Mixture Modeling, we performed a clustering analysis for a sample of 105 CLBs selected from the literature. Three kinds of analysis found that CLBs lie in between the parameter distributions of FSRQs and BL Lacs: (i) univariate analysis; (ii) bivariate analysis; and (iii) multivariate analysis, carried out with a dimension reduction approach of the physical properties of the three types of blazars. Our results suggest that CLBs belong to a transition type between FSRQs and BL Lacs, which may be regulated by the change of accretion process and may be similar to other changing-look AGNs., Comment: Published in ApJ. 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Weak-line quasars (WLQs) are a notable group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that show unusually weak UV lines even though their optical-UV continuum shapes are similar to those of typical quasars. The physical mechanism for WLQs is an unsolved puzzle in the AGN unified model. We explore the properties of UV emission lines by performing extensive photoionization calculations based on Cloudy simulation with different spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGNs. The AGN continua are built from several observational empirical correlations, where the black-body emission from the cold disk, the power-law emission from the hot corona, and a soft X-ray excess component are considered. We find that the equivalent width (EW) of C {\footnotesize IV} from our models is systematically lower than observational values if the component of soft X-ray excess is neglected. The EW will increase several times and is roughly consistent with the observations after considering the soft X-ray excess component as constrained from normal type I AGNs. We find that the UV lines are weak for QSOs with quite large BH mass (e.g., $M_{\rm BH}>10^9M_{\odot}$) and weak soft X-ray emission due to the deficit of ionizing photons. Tidal disruption events\,(TDEs) provide a valuable probe in studying the dynamics of stars in the nuclear environments of galaxies. Recent observations show that TDEs are strongly overrepresented in post-starburst or "green valley" galaxies, although the underlying physical mechanism remains unclear. Considering the possible interaction between stars and active galactic nucleus\,(AGN) disk, the TDE rates can be greatly changed compared to those in quiescent galactic nuclei. In this work, we revisit TDE rates by incorporating an evolving AGN disk within the framework of the "loss cone" theory. We numerically evolve the Fokker-Planck equations by considering the star-disk interactions, in-situ star formation in the unstable region of the outer AGN disk and the evolution of the accretion process for supermassive black holes\,(SMBHs). We find that the TDE rates are enhanced by about two orders of magnitude shortly after the AGN transitions into a non-active stage. During this phase, the accumulated stars are rapidly scattered into the loss cone due to the disappearance of the inner standard thin disk. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. An equivalent width (EW) based classification may cause the erroneous judgement to the flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacerate objects (BL Lac) due to the diluting the line features by dramatic variations in the jet continuum flux. To help address the issue, the present paper explore the possible intrinsic classification on the bias of a random forest supervised machine learning algorithm. In order to do so, we compile a sample of 1680 Fermi blazars that have both gamma-rays and radio-frequencies data available from the 4LAC-DR2 catalog, which includes 1352 training and validation samples and 328 forecast samples. By studying the results for all of the different combinations of 23 characteristic parameters, we found that there are 178 optimal parameters combinations (OPCs) with the highest accuracy ($\simeq$ 98.89\%). Using the combined classification results from the nine combinations of these OPCs to the 328 forecast samples, we predict that there are 113 true BL Lacs (TBLs) and 157 false BL Lacs (FBLs) that are possible intrinsically FSRQs misclassified as BL Lacs. The FBLs show a clear separation from TBLs and FSRQs in the $\gamma$-ray photon spectral index, $\Gamma_{\rm ph}$, and X-band radio flux, ${\rm log}{F_{R}}$, plot. Phenomenally, existence a BL Lac to FSRQ (B-to-F) transition zone is suggested, where the FBLs are in the stage of transition from BL Lacs to FSRQs. Comparing the LSP Changing-Look Blazars (CLBs) reported in the literatures, the majority of LSP CLBs are located at the B-to-F zone. We explore the timing and spectral properties of GRS 1915+105 based on X-ray observations of NICER and Insight-HXMT during the long outburst from 2017 to 2021. We find a new class of variability in the rising stage of the outburst that differs from the formerly reported patterns of light curves. This new variability pattern, which we name class $\psi$, is characterized by several periodic mini pulses superposed on another longer periodic pulse. The periods are around $\sim$130 seconds and $\sim$10 seconds for the main pulses and mini pulses respectively based on the analysis of power spectrum density (PSD) and step-wise filter correlation (SFC), where the SFC method has an advantage in finding the superimposed periodic components. The mini pulses become weak or disappear when the luminosity increases and the light curves change into the classical class $\kappa$. The class $\psi$ shows a softer spectrum with lower count rates compared to the class $\kappa$ during the main pulse. The new class $\psi$ shows peculiar timing and spectral properties compared to those of classic class $\kappa$, which can help us to explore the class transition mechanism in GRS 1915+105., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The hydrogen Balmer decrement (e.g., $\rm H\alpha/H\beta$) is widely adopted as an indicator of the internal reddening of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This is challenged by some low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) and changing-look AGNs (CLAGNs), which have steep Balmer decrement but without strong evidence for absorption. We compile a sample of normal AGNs and CLAGNs with a wider distribution of bolometric Eddington ratio ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}=L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$) and find a strong negative correlation between $\rm H\alpha/H\beta$ and $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$, which suggests that the Balmer decrement is also accretion-rate dependent. We further explore the Balmer decrement based on the photoionization model using the Cloudy code by considering spectral energy distribution (SED) from the accretion disk with different accretion rates (e.g., disk/corona and truncated disk at high and low Eddington ratios, respectively). Both the standard disk and truncated disk predict a negative correlation of $\rm H\alpha/H\beta-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$, where the relation is steeper in the case of the truncated disk. The negative correlations are also explored in two single CLAGNs. The measured negative correlation of $\rm H\alpha/H\beta$ -- $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ is mainly caused by the lower responsivity $({\rm dlog}L_{\rm line}/{\rm dlog}L_{\rm cont})$ in $\rm H\alpha$ relative to that in $\rm H\beta$, due to the larger optical depth in the former. Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. Gas accretion of embedded stellar-mass black holes\,(sBHs) or stars in the accretion disk of active galactic nuclei\,(AGNs) will modify the mass distribution of these sBHs and stars, which will also affect the migration of the sBHs/stars. With the introduction of the mass accretion effect, we simulate the evolution of the sBH/star distribution function in a consistent way by extending the Fokker-Planck equation of sBH/star distributions to the mass-varying scenario, and explore the mass distribution of sBHs in the nuclear region of the galaxy centre. We find that the sBHs can grow up to several tens solar mass and form heavier sBH binaries, which will be helpful for us to understand the black-hole mass distribution as observed by the current and future ground-based gravitational wave detectors\,(e.g., LIGO/VIRGO, ET and Cosmic Explorer). We further estimate the event rate of extreme mass-ratio inspirals\,(EMRI) for sBH surrounding the massive black hole and calculate the stochastic gravitational wave\,(GW) background of the EMRIs. We find that the background can be detected in future space-borne GW detectors after considering the sBHs embedded in the AGN disk, while the mass accretion has a slight effect on the GW background., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

Recent observations show that the metallicity of the broad line region ($Z_{\rm BLR}$) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is solar-to-supersolar, which is positively correlated with the mass of supermassive black holes ($M_{\rm BH}$) and does not evolve with redshift up to $z \sim 7$. We revisit the $M_{\rm BH}-Z_{\rm BLR}$ correlation with more AGNs with $M_{\rm BH}\sim 10^{6-8} M_{\odot}$ and find that the positive correlation become flat in low-mass range. It is known that outer part of accretion disks is gravitationally unstable and can fragment into stars. Considering the star formation and supernovae (SNe) in the outer AGN disk, we calculate the metal enrichment and find that positive $M_{\rm BH}-Z_{\rm BLR}$ correlation can be roughly reproduced if the stellar mass distribution is ``top-heavy". We find that the observed BLR size is more or less similar to the self-gravity radius of the AGN disk, which suggests that the BLR may be closely correlated with the underlying accretion process., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are found in the center of five galaxies, where a tidal disruption event (TDE)-like event is also reported in GSN 069 that happened a couple of years before the QPEs. We explain the connection of these phenomena based on a model of a highly eccentric white-dwarf (WD)-$10^{4-6}M_{\odot}$ massive black hole (MBH) binary formed by the Hill mechanism. In this system, the tidal induced internal oscillation of WD can heat the WD envelope thereby induces the tidal nova and inflates the WD envelope, which can be captured by the MBH and form a TDE. The tidal stripping of the surviving WD in the eccentric orbit can produce the QPEs. We also apply this model to the other four QPE sources. Based on the estimated fallback rate, we find that the remaining time after the QPE-observed time for these QPEs is only around 1-2 years based on our simple model estimation, and then the WD will be fully disrupted. We also show that the accretion rate can be much higher than Eddington accretion rate in final stage of these QPE sources. Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CLAGNs) show the disappearance and reappearance of broad emission lines in a few years, which challenges the orientation-based AGN unification model. We reduce the X-ray data for five well-studied CLAGNs that show a strong change in broad emission lines in the past several decades. We find that the X-ray photon index, $\Gamma$, and the Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, normally follow negative and positive correlations when the Eddington ratio is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. We find that the CLAGNs observed with broad H$\beta$ emission lines stay in the positive part of the $\Gamma-L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation, while the broad H$\beta$ lines become weak or disappear in the anticorrelation part of the $\Gamma-L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation, which suggests that the evolution of the broad lines should be correlated with the evolution of the underlying accretion process. We further find that the CLAGNs are consistent with the other different types of AGNs in the $L_{\rm bol}-L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation. These results support that the CLAGNs are belong to a special stage of AGNs with a bolometric Eddington ratio $\sim$1\%, where the broad emission lines are easily affected by the strong variation in ionization luminosity that is caused by the transition of accretion modes., Comment: published paper of 2022 ApJ, 930,46

Quasar outflows may play a crucial role in regulating the host galaxy, although the spatial scale of quasar outflows remain a major enigma, with their acceleration mechanism poorly understood. The kinematic information of outflow is the key to understanding its origin and acceleration mechanism. Here, we report the galactocentric distances of different outflow components for both a sample and an individual quasar. We find that the outflow distance increases with velocity, with a typical value from several parsecs to more than one hundred parsecs, providing direct evidence for an acceleration happening at a scale of the order of 10 parsecs. These outflows carry ~1% of the total quasar energy, while their kinematics are consistent with a dust driven model with a launching radius comparable to the scale of a dusty torus, indicating that the coupling between dust and quasar radiation may produce powerful feedback that is crucial to galaxy evolution., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures in main text. Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of active galactic nuclei at millimeter wavelengths have the power to reveal the launching and initial collimation region of extragalactic radio jets, down to $10-100$ gravitational radii ($r_g=GM/c^2$) scales in nearby sources. Centaurus A is the closest radio-loud source to Earth. It bridges the gap in mass and accretion rate between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in Messier 87 and our galactic center. A large southern declination of $-43^{\circ}$ has however prevented VLBI imaging of Centaurus A below ${\lambda}1$cm thus far. Here, we show the millimeter VLBI image of the source, which we obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope at $228$GHz. Compared to previous observations, we image Centaurus A's jet at a tenfold higher frequency and sixteen times sharper resolution and thereby probe sub-lightday structures. We reveal a highly-collimated, asymmetrically edge-brightened jet as well as the fainter counterjet. We find that Centaurus A's source structure resembles the jet in Messier 87 on ${\sim}500r_g$ scales remarkably well. Furthermore, we identify the location of Centaurus A's SMBH with respect to its resolved jet core at ${\lambda}1.3$mm and conclude that the source's event horizon shadow should be visible at THz frequencies. The black-hole images obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) are expected to be variable at the dynamical timescale near their horizons. For the black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, this timescale (5-61 days) is comparable to the 6-day extent of the 2017 EHT observations. Closure phases along baseline triangles are robust interferometric observables that are sensitive to the expected structural changes of the images but are free of station-based atmospheric and instrumental errors. We explored the day-to-day variability in closure phase measurements on all six linearly independent non-trivial baseline triangles that can be formed from the 2017 observations. We showed that three triangles exhibit very low day-to-day variability, with a dispersion of $\sim3-5^\circ$. The only triangles that exhibit substantially higher variability ($\sim90-180^\circ$) are the ones with baselines that cross visibility amplitude minima on the $u-v$ plane, as expected from theoretical modeling. We used two sets of General Relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations to explore the dependence of the predicted variability on various black-hole and accretion-flow parameters. We found that changing the magnetic field configuration, electron temperature model, or black-hole spin has a marginal effect on the model consistency with the observed level of variability. On the other hand, the most discriminating image characteristic of models is the fractional width of the bright ring of emission. Models that best reproduce the observed small level of variability are characterized by thin ring-like images with structures dominated by gravitational lensing effects and thus least affected by turbulence in the accreting plasmas., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

The physical mechanism for triggering the changing-look phenomenon in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is still unclear. We explore this issue based on the multi-wavelength spectral and flux variations for a changing-look AGN Mrk~1018 with long-term observations in the X-ray, optical/ultraviolet(UV), and radio bands. Both the optical and the X-ray emission experience rapid decay in changing-look phase during 2010--2015, where a re-flare appears in the optical/UV and X-ray bands. We find a time lag of $\sim 20 $ days of optical/UV behind X-ray variations in type 1.9 phase. The 5 GHz radio flux decreases by $\sim 20$\% in type 1.9 phase during 2016--2017. We find both X-ray photon index ($\Gamma$) and the optical-to-X-ray spectral index (\alphaox\,) are anti-correlated with the Eddington scaled 2--10~keV X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{X}/L_\mathrm{Edd}$) in the type 1.9 phase. However, the type 1 phase deviates from these two anti-correlations, which suggests that the change of broad emission lines might be regulated by the evolution of accretion disk (e.g., disappearing of the inner cold disk in the type 1.9 phase)., Comment: 12 pages,5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Our understanding of strong gravity near supermassive compact objects has recently improved thanks to the measurements made by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). We use here the M87* shadow size to infer constraints on the physical charges of a large variety of nonrotating or rotating black holes. For example, we show that the quality of the measurements is already sufficient to rule out that M87* is a highly charged dilaton black hole. Synchrotron radiation from hot gas near a black hole results in a polarized image. The image polarization is determined by effects including the orientation of the magnetic field in the emitting region, relativistic motion of the gas, strong gravitational lensing by the black hole, and parallel transport in the curved spacetime. We explore these effects using a simple model of an axisymmetric, equatorial accretion disk around a Schwarzschild black hole. By using an approximate expression for the null geodesics derived by Beloborodov (2002) and conservation of the Walker-Penrose constant, we provide analytic estimates for the image polarization. We test this model using currently favored general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of M87*, using ring parameters given by the simulations. For a subset of these with modest Faraday effects, we show that the ring model broadly reproduces the polarimetric image morphology. Our model also predicts the polarization evolution for compact flaring regions, such as those observed from Sgr A* with GRAVITY. With suitably chosen parameters, our simple model can reproduce the EVPA pattern and relative polarized intensity in Event Horizon Telescope images of M87*. The nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 2617 underwent an unambiguous 'inside-out' multi-wavelength outburst in Spring 2013, and a dramatic Seyfert type change probably between 2010 and 2012, with the emergence of broad optical emission lines. To search for the jet activity associated with this variable accretion activity, we carried out multi-resolution and multi-wavelength radio observations. Using the very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz, we find that NGC 2617 shows a partially synchrotron self-absorbed compact radio core with a significant core shift, and an optically thin steep-spectrum jet extending towards the north up to about two parsecs in projection. We also observed NGC 2617 with the electronic Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) at 1.5 and 5.5 GHz, and revisited the archival data of the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The radio core had a stable flux density of about 1.4 mJy at 5.0 GHz between 2013 June and 2014 January, in agreement with the expectation of a supermassive black hole in the low accretion rate state. The northern jet component is unlikely to be associated with the 'inside-out' outburst of 2013. Moreover, we report that most optically selected changing-look AGN at z<0.83 are sub-mJy radio sources in the existing VLA surveys at 1.4 GHz, and it is unlikely that they are more active than normal AGN at radio frequencies., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The GeV break in spectra of the blazar 3C 454.3 is a special observation feature that has been discovered by the {\it Fermi}-LAT. The origin of the GeV break in the spectra is still under debate. In order to explore the possible source of GeV spectral break in 3C 454.3, a one-zone homogeneous leptonic jet model, as well as the {\it McFit} technique are utilized for fitting the quasi-simultaneous multi-waveband spectral energy distribution (SED) of 3C 454.3. The outside border of the broad-line region (BLR) and inner dust torus are chosen to contribute radiation in the model as external, seed photons to the external-Compton process, considering the observed $\gamma$-ray radiation. The combination of two components, namely the Compton-scattered BLR and dust torus radiation, assuming a broken power-law distribution of emitted particles, provides a proper fitting to the multi-waveband SED of 3C 454.3 detected 2008 Aug 3 - Sept 2 and explains the GeV spectral break. We propose that the spectral break of 3C 454.3 may originate from an inherent break in the energy distribution of the emitted particles and the Klein-Nishina effect. A comparison is performed between the energy density of the 'external' photon field for the whole BLR $U_{\rm BLR}$ achieved via model fitting and that constrained from the BLR data. The distance from the position of the $\gamma$-ray radiation area of 3C 454.3 to the central black hole could be constrained at $\sim 0.78$pc ($\sim 4.00 R_{\rm BLR}$, the size of the BLR)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. The 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the central source in M87 have led to the first measurement of the size of a black-hole shadow. This observation offers a new and clean gravitational test of the black-hole metric in the strong-field regime. We show analytically that spacetimes that deviate from the Kerr metric but satisfy weak-field tests can lead to large deviations in the predicted black-hole shadows that are inconsistent with even the current EHT measurements. We use numerical calculations of regular, parametric, non-Kerr metrics to identify the common characteristic among these different parametrizations that control the predicted shadow size. We show that the shadow-size measurements place significant constraints on deviation parameters that control the second post-Newtonian and higher orders of each metric and are, therefore, inaccessible to weak-field tests. The new constraints are complementary to those imposed by observations of gravitational waves from stellar-mass sources., Comment: Physical Review Letters

In the third catalog of active galactic nuclei detected by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope Clean (3LAC) sample, there are 402 blazars candidates of uncertain type (BCU). The proposed analysis will help to evaluate the potential optical classification flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) versus BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) objects of BCUs, which can help to understand which is the most elusive class of blazar hidden in the Fermi sample. By studying the 3LAC sample, we found some critical values of $\gamma$-ray photon spectral index ($\Gamma_{\rm ph}$), variability index (VI) and radio flux (${\rm F_R}$) of the sources separate known FSRQs and BL Lac objects. We further utilize those values to defined an empirical "high-confidence" candidate zone that can be used to classify the BCUs. Within such a zone ($\Gamma_{\rm ph}<2.187$, log${\rm F_R}<2.258$ and ${ \rm logVI <1.702}$), we found that 120 BCUs can be classified BL Lac candidates with a higher degree of confidence (with a misjudged rate $<1\%$). Our results suggest that an empirical "high confidence" diagnosis is possible to distinguish the BL Lacs from the Fermi observations based on only on the direct observational data of $\Gamma_{\rm ph}$, VI and ${\rm F_R}$., Comment: Published in ApJ, 2020, 891, 87. 11 pages, 1 figures, 5 tables

The discovery of changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL AGNs), with appearance and disappearance of broad emission lines and/or with strong variation of line-of-sight column density within a few years, challenges the AGN unification model. We explore the physical mechanisms based on the X-ray spectral evolution for a sample of 15 CL AGNs. We find that the X-ray photon index, $\Gamma$, and Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, follow negative and positive correlations when $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. This different X-ray spectral evolution is roughly consistent with the prediction of the accretion-mode transition (e.g., clumpy cold gas or cold disk to advection dominated accretion flow, or vice visa). With quasi-simultaneous X-ray and optical spectrum observations within one year, we find that the CL AGNs observed with and without broad emission lines stay in the positive and negative part of the $\Gamma-L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation respectively. The anti- and positive correlations between X-ray photon index and Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity were found in decay phase of X-ray binary outbursts and a sample of active galactic nuclei in former works. We further systematically investigate the evolution of X-ray spectral index, along the X-ray flux and Eddington ratio in eight outbursts of four black-hole X-ray binaries, where all selected outbursts have observational data from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer in both rise and decay phases. In the initial rise phase, the X-ray spectral index is anti-correlated with the flux, and the X-ray spectrum quickly softens when the X-ray flux is approaching the peak value. In the decay phase, the X-ray photon index and the flux follow two different positive correlations, and they become anti-correlated again when the X-ray flux is below a critical value, where the anti-correlation part follow the same trend as that found in the initial rise phase. Compared with other X-ray binaries, GRO J1655-40 has an evident lower critical Eddington ratio for the anti- and positive transition, which suggests that its black-hole mass and distance are not well constrained or its intrinsic physic is different., Comment: MNRAS 2019,487,5335

The recently published fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope source catalog (4FGL) reports 5065 gamma-ray sources in terms of direct observational gamma-ray properties. Among the sources, the largest population is the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), which consists of 3137 blazars, 42 radio galaxies, and 28 other AGNs. The blazar sample comprises 694 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 1131 BL Lac-type objects (BL Lacs), and 1312 blazar candidates of an unknown type (BCUs). The classification of blazars is difficult using optical spectroscopy given the limited knowledge with respect to their intrinsic properties, and the limited availability of astronomical observations. To overcome these challenges, machine learning algorithms are being investigated as alternative approaches. Using the 4FGL catalog, a sample of 3137 Fermi blazars with 23 parameters is systematically selected. Three established supervised machine learning algorithms (random forests (RFs), support vector machines (SVMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs)) are employed to general predictive models to classify the BCUs. We analyze the results for all of the different combinations of parameters. Interestingly, a previously reported trend the use of more parameters leading to higher accuracy is not found. Considering the least number of parameters used, combinations of eight, 12 or 10 parameters in the SVM, ANN, or RF generated models achieve the highest accuracy (Accuracy $\simeq$ 91.8\%, or $\simeq$ 92.9\%). Using the combined classification results from the optimal combinations of parameters, 724 BL Lac type candidates and 332 FSRQ type candidates are predicted; however, 256 remain without a clear prediction., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 14 pages, 2 figures, 6 tables

We construct samples of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with low-frequency radio data from the recent released TGSS AD1 catalog at 150 MHz. With these samples, we compare the properties of jet power for blazars, radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RL-NLS1s), young radio sources (YRSs) and radio galaxies. The jet-disk connection, and the unification of jetted AGNs are explored. On the Eddington ratio --- Eddington-scaled jet power plane, jetted AGNs can be generally divided into two populations. Low power radio galaxies, low excitation FR IIs (LEG/FR IIs), and most YRSs show larger jet power than accretion power, while FSRQs, RL-NLS1s, and high excitation FR IIs (HEG/FR IIs) are on the contrary. LEG/FR IIs share similar jet power properties with HEG/FR IIs, while their accretion properties are different with the latter. These facts suggest an evolutional sequence from HEG/FR IIs, LEG/FR IIs to FR Is, where the accretion and jet activities get dimmed gradually. LEG/FR IIs are the transitional objects that accretion processes have switched off, while jets are still active. After correcting the contribution from radio core of blazars, the unification between blazars and radio galaxies is confirmed with the jet power distributions. The unification involved RL-NLS1s is more complicated than the simple scenarios of black hole growth or orientation effect. In addition, our results manifest that low synchrotron peaked BL Lacs (LBLs) contain two distinct groups on the distribution of jet power, with one group similar with FSRQs and the other similar with intermediate synchrotron peaked BL Lacs. In the third catalog of active galactic nuclei detected by the Fermi-LAT (3LAC) Clean Sample, there are 402 blazars candidates of uncertain type (BCU). Due to the limitations of astronomical observation or intrinsic properties, it is difficult to classify blazars using optical spectroscopy. The potential classification of BCUs using machine learning algorithms is essential. Based on the 3LAC Clean Sample, we collect 1420 Fermi blazars with 8 parameters of {\gamma}-ray photon spectral index, radio flux, flux density, curve significance, the integral photon flux in 100 to 300 MeV, 0.3 to 1 GeV, 10 to 100 GeV and variability index. Here, we apply 4 different supervised machine learning (SML) algorithms (\emph{Decision trees, Random forests, support vector machines and Mclust Gaussian finite mixture models}) to evaluate the classification of BCUs based on the direct observational properties. All the 4 methods can perform exceedingly well with a more accuracy and can effective forecast the classification of Fermi BCUs. The evaluating results show the results of these methods (SML) are valid and robust, where, about 1/4 sources are FSRQs and 3/4 are BL Lacs in 400 BCUs, which are consistent with some other recent results. Although a number of factors influence the accuracy of SML, the results are stable at a fixed ratio 1:3 between FSRQs and BL Lacs, which suggests that the SML can provides an effective method to evaluate the potential classification of BCUs. In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci.
