Abstract

A toy model for ferroic orders through entropy. As the rod/spin concentration (or the volume enclosing the ferroic rods) is variable by a tunable force conjugate to the order parameter, the model exhibits hysteresis associated to some discontinuous isotropic-nematic transitions explained essentially by Onsager's hard-rod model. The uniaxial anisotropy and nonperiodicity by construction is reminiscent of Stoner-Wohlfarth's single-domain magnet, and the toy model may ultimately be seen as a minimalistic for hard ferroics with some possible self-averaging disorders. 4. Malignant hyperthermia: Report on a successful rescue of a case with the highest temperature of 44.2°C

Abstract

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an inherited skeletal muscle disorder caused primarily by a genetic mutation, usually in the calcium channel gene of the muscle. This mutation can lead to muscle hypersensitivity to volatile anesthetics (such as sevoflurane) and the depolarizing muscle relaxant succinylcholine, resulting in hyperthermia, muscle stiffness, metabolic disturbances, and other severe physiological reactions. This condition may prove fatal unless it is recognized in its early stages and treatment is administered promptly and aggressively. We report a 13-year-old adolescent who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy and developed MH after the use of inhalational anesthetics, manifested by unremitting hyperthermia with a maximum temperature of 44.2°C, muscle rigidity, tachycardia, hypercapnia; and malignant arrhythmias, cardiogenic shock, hyperkalemia, metabolic, and respiratory acidosis. After early and timely recognition, multidisciplinary management and administration of dantrolene, the case was successfully treated. Exome sequencing revealed a point mutation (amino acid change) on the RYR1 gene: c.12700G>C(p.Val4234Leu). Due to the lack of ready-made dantrolene in our hospital, the patient in this case received dantrolene treatment only 6 h after the first observation of high body temperature. We review the development of the disease and summarize the success of treatment and what can be done to improve the chances of saving the patient’s life if dantrolene is not available in time.

Abstract

We consider the Palatini formulation of $f(R,T)$ gravity theory, in which a nonminimal coupling between the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor is introduced, by considering the metric and the affine connection as independent field variables. The field equations and the equations of motion for massive test particles are derived, and we show that the independent connection can be expressed as the Levi-Civita connection of an auxiliary, energy-momentum trace dependent metric, related to the physical metric by a conformal transformation. Similarly to the metric case, the field equations impose the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor. We obtain the explicit form of the equations of motion for massive test particles in the case of a perfect fluid, and the expression of the extra-force, which is identical to the one obtained in the metric case. The thermodynamic interpretation of the theory is also briefly discussed. We investigate in detail the cosmological implications of the theory, and we obtain the generalized Friedmann equations of the $f(R,T)$ gravity in the Palatini formulation. Cosmological models with Lagrangians of the type $f=R-\alpha ^2/R+g(T)$ and $f=R+\alpha ^2R^2+g(T)$ are investigated. Abstract

The vascular endothelium dynamically responds to environmental cues and plays a pivotal role in maintaining vascular homeostasis by regulating vasomotor tone, blood cell trafficking, permeability and immune responses. However, endothelial dysfunction results in various pathological conditions. Inflammasomes are large intracellular multimeric complexes activated by pathogens or cellular damage. Inflammasomes in vascular endothelial cells (ECs) initiate innate immune responses, which have emerged as significant mediators in endothelial dysfunction, contributing to the pathophysiology of an array of diseases. This review summarizes the mechanisms and ramifications of inflammasomes in ECs and related vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, stroke, and lung and kidney diseases. We also discuss potential drugs targeting EC inflammasomes and their applications in treating vascular diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BackgroundEpendymomas are rare CNS tumors. Previous studies describing the clinical course of ependymoma patients were restricted to small sample sizes, often with patients at a specific institution.MethodsClinically annotated ependymoma tissue samples from 19 institutions were centrally reviewed. Patients were all adults aged 18 years or older at the time of diagnosis. Potential prognostic clinical factors identified on univariate analysis were included in a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model with backwards selection to model progression-free survival.ResultsThe 282 adult ependymoma patients were equally male and female with a mean age of 43 years (range, 18-80y) at diagnosis. The majority were grade II (78%) with the tumor grade for 20 cases being reclassified on central review (half to higher grade). Tumor locations were spine (46%), infratentorial (35%), and supratentorial (19%). Tumor recurrence occurred in 26% (n = 74) of patients with a median time to progression of 14 years. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model identified supratentorial location (P < .01), grade III (anaplastic; P < .01), and subtotal resection, followed or not by radiation (P < .01), as significantly increasing risk of early progression.ConclusionsWe report findings from an ongoing, multicenter collaboration from a collection of clinically annotated adult ependymoma tumor samples demonstrating distinct predictors of progression-free survival. This unique resource provides the opportunity to better define the clinical course of ependymoma for clinical and translational studies.

To apply lattice QCD in the calculation of glueball spectrum it is needed firstly to know associated operators acting on vacuum. We show how to find all the independent representations and operators, of group $SO(3)^{PC}$ at different dimension, since the work is not trivial. Then, we decompose these representation into irreducible representation of $O^{PC}$ group, which are listed in the note. Recently BES2 collaboration observed an enhancement near the $p\bar p$ invariant mass spectrum. Using the covariant tensor formalism, here we provide theoretical formulae for the partial wave analysis (PWA) of the $\psi$ radiative decay channels $\psi \to \gamma p\bar p, \gamma\Lambda\bar \Lambda, \gamma\Sigma \bar\Sigma, \gamma\Xi\bar \Xi$ . By performing the Monte Carlo simulation, we give the angular distributions for the photon and proton in the process of $J/\psi \to \gamma p\bar p$, which may serve as a useful reference for the future PWA on these channels., Comment: 13 pages,5 figures
