Search

Cooling of atomic motion is a crucial tool for many branches of atomic physics, ranging from fundamental physics explorations to quantum information and sensing. For trapped ions, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) cooling has received attention for the relative speed, low laser power requirements, and broad cooling bandwidth of the technique. However, in applications where the ion used for cooling has hyperfine structure to enable long coherence times, it is difficult to find a closed three-level system in which to perform standard EIT cooling. Here, we demonstrate successful EIT cooling on 25Mg+ by the addition of an extra laser frequency; this method can be applied to any ion with non-zero nuclear spin. Furthermore, we demonstrate simultaneous EIT cooling of all axial modes in mixed-species crystals 9Be+ - 25Mg+ and 9Be+ - 25Mg+ - 9Be+ through the 25Mg+ ion., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Inspired by the recent findings of $Z_{cs}$ and $P_{cs}$ states, we investigate the strong interactions of the systems with open strangeness(es) from the light sector to the heavy sector (no beauty quark), where the interaction potential is derived from the vector meson exchange mechanism in $t$- and $u$-channels. In the current work, we discuss all of single channel cases for the open strangeness in the systemic framework, where the resonances $X_0(2866)$, $D^*_{s0}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ are dynamically generated. Recent BESIII data on radiative $J/\psi$ decays from $\sim 10^{10}$ $J/\psi$ samples should significantly advance our understanding of the controversial nature of $\eta(1405/1475)$. This motivates us to develop a three-body unitary coupled-channel model for radiative $J/\psi$ decays to three-meson final states of any partial wave ($J^{PC}$). Basic building blocks of the model are bare resonance states such as $\eta(1405/1475)$ and $f_1(1420)$, and $\pi K$, $K\bar{K}$, and $\pi\eta$ two-body interactions that generate resonances such as $K^*(892)$, $K^*_0(700)$, and $a_0(980)$. This model reasonably fits $K_SK_S\pi^0$ Dalitz plot pseudo data generated from the BESIII's $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$ amplitude for $J/\psi\to\gamma K_SK_S\pi^0$. The experimental branching ratios of $\eta(1405/1475)\to\eta\pi\pi$ and $\eta(1405/1475)\to\gamma\rho$ relative to that of $\eta(1405/1475)\to K\bar{K}\pi$ are simultaneously fitted. Our $0^{-+}$ amplitude is analytically continued to find three poles, two of which correspond to $\eta(1405)$ on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, and the third one for $\eta(1475)$. This is the first pole determination of $\eta(1405/1475)$ and, furthermore, the first-ever pole determination from analyzing experimental Dalitz plot distributions with a manifestly three-body unitary coupled-channel framework. Process-dependent $\eta\pi\pi$, $\gamma\pi^+\pi^-$, and $\pi\pi\pi$ lineshapes of $J/\psi\to\gamma(0^{-+})\to \gamma(\eta\pi\pi)$, $\gamma(\gamma\rho)$, and $\gamma(\pi\pi\pi)$ are predicted, and are in reasonable agreement with data. The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

The recent BESIII data on $J/\psi\to\gamma(K_SK_S\pi^0)$, which is significantly more precise than earlier $\eta(1405/1475)$-related data, enables quantitative discussions on $\eta(1405/1475)$ at the previously unreachable level. We conduct a three-body unitary coupled-channel analysis of experimental Monte-Carlo outputs for radiative $J/\psi$ decays via $\eta(1405/1475)$: $K_SK_S\pi^0$ Dalitz plot distributions from the BESIII, and branching ratios of $\gamma(\eta\pi^+\pi^-)$ and $\gamma(\gamma\pi^+\pi^-)$ final states relative to that of $\gamma(K\bar{K}\pi)$. Our model systematically considers (multi-)loop diagrams and an associated triangle singularity, which is critical in making excellent predictions on $\eta(1405/1475)\to \pi\pi\pi$ lineshapes and branching ratios. The $\eta(1405/1475)$ pole locations are revealed for the first time. Two poles for $\eta(1405)$ are found on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, while one pole for $\eta(1475)$. The $\eta(1405/1475)$ states are described with two bare states dressed by continuum states. The lower bare state would be an excited $\eta^\prime$, while the higher one could be an excited $\eta^{(\prime)}$, hybrid, glueball, or their mixture. First hidden-charm pentaquark candidate with strangeness, $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$, was recently discovered in $B^-\to J/\psi\Lambda\bar{p}$ by the LHCb Collaboration. $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ shows up as a bump at the $\Xi_c\bar{D}$ threshold in the $J/\psi\Lambda$ invariant mass ($M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$) distribution. The $M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$ distribution also shows a large fluctuation at the $\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ threshold, hinting the existence of a possible $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$. In this work, we determine the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ and $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ pole positions for the first time. For this purpose, we fit a $B^-\to J/\psi\Lambda\bar{p}$ model to the $M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$, $M_{J/\psi\bar{p}}$, $M_{\Lambda\bar{p}}$, and $\cos\theta_{K^*}$ distributions from the LHCb simultaneously; $\chi^2/{\rm ndf}\sim 1.21$. Then we extract $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda$ poles from a unitary $\Xi_c\bar{D}$-$\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ coupled-channel scattering amplitude built in the model. In our default fit, the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ pole is found at $( 4338.2\pm 1.4)-( 1.9\pm 0.5 )\,i$ MeV while the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ pole at $4254.7\pm 0.4$ MeV. The $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ and $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ are mostly $\Xi_c \bar{D}$ bound and $\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ virtual states, respectively. Through our analysis, the data disfavors a hypothesis of $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ as merely a kinematical effect. Inspired by the observation of the $P_{cs} (4459)$ state by LHCb recently, we reexamine the results of the interaction of the $J/\psi \Lambda$ channel with its coupled channels, exploiting the coupled channel unitary approach combined with heavy quark spin and local hidden gauge symmetries. By tuning the only free parameter, we find a pole of $(4459.07+i6.89)$ MeV below the $\bar D^* \Xi_c$ threshold, which was consistent well with the mass and width of the $P_{cs} (4459)$ state. Thus, we assume the $P_{cs} (4459)$ state to be a $\bar D^* \Xi_c$ bound state with the uncertainties on its degeneracy with $J^P = \frac{1}{2}^-$ and $J^P = \frac{3}{2}^-$. For the degeneracy, it would have two-poles structure, like $P_c (4450)$ before. There is another pole in the $J^P = \frac{1}{2}^-$ sector, $(4310.53+i8.23)$ MeV, corresponding to a deep bound state of $\bar D \Xi_c$. Furthermore, the previously predicted loose bound states of $\bar D \Xi'_c$, $\bar D^* \Xi'_c$, $\bar D^* \Xi^*_c$ with $J=1/2,~I=0$ and $\bar D^* \Xi'_c$, $\bar D \Xi^*_c$, $\bar D^* \Xi_c^*$ with $J=3/2,~I=0$ may exist as either bound states or unbound virtual states. We hope that future experiments can search for the $\bar D^{(*)} \Xi_c$ molecular states in their dominant decay channels of $\bar D^{(*)}_s \Lambda_c$, also in the $J/\psi \Lambda$ and $\eta_c \Lambda$ channels to reveal their different nature., Comment: Some comments and corrections have been made

Engineering composite materials and devices with desired topological properties is accelerating the development of topological physics and its applications. Approaches of realizing novel topological hybrids, including in-situ epitaxy growth, planar/layered superlattices, and assembled (artificial) atom/dot arrays, etc., endow the topological systems with a substantial degree of control and tunability. Here, we propose a framework for realizing a field-programmable topological array (FPTA) that enables the implementation of dynamically reconfigurable topological platforms. FPTA allows for the independent, simultaneous, and local programmability of the various platform properties, such as the electromagnetic field, the spin-orbit field, and the superconducting order parameter. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the FPTA in rendering the system topologically-nontrivial and implementing non-Abelian manipulations, we simulate their operation in various case-studies. Our framework provides a playground for unearthing novel topological phases using components of high feasibility and sets the guidelines for run-time dynamic reconfiguration which is crucial for high-performance topological electronic circuits and quantum computing., Comment: 15 pages,6 figures

Within the chiral unitary approach and with the constraints of heavy quark spin symmetry, we study the coupled channel interactions of ${\bar D}^{(*)}\Sigma_c^{(*)}$ channels, close to whose thresholds three pentaquark-like $P_c$ states have been reported by the LHCb Collaboration. In the present work, we take into account the contributions of pion exchanges via box diagrams to the interaction potentials, and therefore lift the degeneracy in the masses of ${\bar D}^*\Sigma_c^{(*)}$ spin multiplets. Fitting the $J/\psi p$ invariant mass distributions in the $\Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi K^- p$ decay, we find that the LHCb pentaquark states can not be reproduced in the direct $J/\psi p$ production in the $\Lambda_b^0$ decay, and can only be indirectly produced in the final state interactions of the $\Lambda_b^0$ decay products, ${\bar D}^*\Sigma_c^{(*)}$, which further supports the nature of these states as $\bar{D}\Sigma_c$ molecules. Based on the fit results obtained, we study the partial decay widths/branching ratios to other decay channels, $\bar{D}^* \Lambda_c$, $\bar{D} \Lambda_c$, and $\eta_c N$, and the corresponding invariant mass distributions. The resonances with $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^-$, $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and the one of $\bar{D}^* \Sigma_c^*$ around 4500 MeV, have large partial decay width into $\eta_c N$, and thus, can be easily seen in the $\eta_c N$ invariant mass distributions. By contrast, the states with $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^-$, $P_c(4457)$, the (predicted) narrow $P_c(4380)$ and the bound state of $\bar{D}^* \Sigma_c^*$ with a mass of about 4520 MeV, do not decay into $\eta_c N$. Therefore, the $\eta_c N$ channel should be studied in future to provide further insights into the nature of these states, especially that of the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$., Comment: Updated with more comments, and welcome to comment

Weakly bound states often occur in nuclear physics. To precisely understand their properties, the coupling to the continuum should be worked out explicitely. Scaling quantum information processors is a challenging task, requiring manipulation of a large number of qubits with high fidelity and a high degree of connectivity. For trapped ions, this could be realized in a two-dimensional array of interconnected traps in which ions are separated, transported and recombined to carry out quantum operations on small subsets of ions. Here, we use a junction connecting orthogonal linear segments in a two-dimensional (2D) trap array to reorder a two-ion crystal. The secular motion of the ions experiences low energy gain and the internal qubit levels maintain coherence during the reordering process, therefore demonstrating a promising method for providing all-to-all connectivity in a large-scale, two- or three-dimensional trapped-ion quantum information processor.

We present our piggyback search for fast radio bursts using the Nanshan 26m Radio Telescope and the Kunming 40m Radio Telescope. The observations are performed in the L-band from 1380 MHz to 1700 MHz at Nanshan and S-band from 2170 MHz to 2310 MHz at Kunming. We built the \textsc{Roach2}-based FFT spectrometer and developed the real-time transient search software. We introduce a new radio interference mitigation technique named \emph{zero-DM matched filter} and give the formula of the signal-to-noise ratio loss in the transient search. Though we have no positive detection of bursts in about 1600 and 2400 hours data at Nanshan and Kunming respectively, an intriguing peryton was detected at Nanshan, from which hundreds of bursts were recorded. Perytons are terrestrial radio signals that mimic celestial fast radio bursts. They were first reported at Parkes and identified as microwave oven interferences later. The bursts detected at Nanshan show similar frequency swept emission and have double-peaked profiles. They appeared in different sky regions in about tens of minutes observations and the dispersion measure index is not exactly 2, which indicates the terrestrial origin. The peryton differs drastically from the known perytons detected at Parkes, because it appeared in a precise period of $p=1.71287\pm 0.00004$ s. A mixed-species geometric phase gate has been proposed for implementing quantum logic spectroscopy on trapped ions that combines probe and information transfer from the spectroscopy to the logic ion in a single pulse. We experimentally realize this method, show how it can be applied as a technique for identifying transitions in currently intractable atoms or molecules, demonstrate its reduced temperature sensitivity, and observe quantum-enhanced frequency sensitivity when it is applied to multi-ion chains. A novel stochastic technique combining a dilute source grid of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ noise with iterative momentum-smearing is used to study the proton correlation function at rest and in boosted frames on two lattice volumes. The technique makes use of the baryonic version of the so-called one-end trick, and the decomposition into signal and noise terms of the resulting stochastic proton correlation function is made explicit. The number and location of the source points in the dilute grid should be chosen so that the benefits of averaging over many locations overcomes the additional statistical error introduced by the noise terms in the desired fitting region. At all nontrivial momentum values considered we find that the choice of $N=4$--$8$ maximally separated source locations is shown to be optimal, providing a reduced statistical error when compared with a single point source. This enables us to successfully fit the proton energy at momentum values as high as $|\vec{p}| \simeq 3.75$ GeV and $|\vec{p}| \simeq 2.82$ GeV on the small and large volume respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The fast development of superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) in the past decade has enabled many advances in quantum information technology. The best system detection efficiency (SDE) record at 1550 nm wavelength was 93% obtained from SNSPD made of amorphous WSi which usually operated at sub-kelvin temperatures. We first demonstrate SNSPD made of polycrystalline NbN with SDE of 90.2% for 1550 nm wavelength at 2.1K, accessible with a compact cryocooler. The SDE saturated to 92.1% when the temperature was lowered to 1.8K. The results lighten the practical and high performance SNSPD to quantum information and other high-end applications., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

We develop single-photon detectors comprising single-mode fiber-coupled superconducting nanowires, with high system detection efficiencies at a wavelength of 940 nm. The detector comprises a 6.5-nm-thick, 110-nm-wide NbN nanowire meander fabricated onto a Si substrate with a distributed Bragg reflector for enhancing the optical absorptance. We demonstrate that, via the design of a low filling factor (1/3) and active area ({\Phi} = 10 {\mu}m), the system reaches a detection efficiency of ~60% with a dark count rate of 10 Hz, a recovery time <12 ns, and a timing jitter of ~50 ps., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Counting rate is a key parameter of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPD) and is determined by the current recovery time of an SNSPD after a detection event. We propose a new method to study the transient detection efficiency (DE) and pulse amplitude during the current recovery process by statistically analyzing the single photon response of an SNSPD under photon illumination with a high repetition rate. The transient DE results match well with the DEs deduced from the static current dependence of DE combined with the waveform of a single-photon detection event. This proves that the static measurement results can be used to analyze the transient current recovery process after a detection event. The results are relevant for understanding the current recovery process of SNSPDs after a detection event and for determining the counting rate of SNSPDs., Comment: 11 pages,4 figures

After some short introductory remarks on particular issues on the vector mesons in nuclei, in this paper we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei from a modern perspective using the local hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons. We present results for the vector baryon interaction and in particular for the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons, taking also the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons into account. We then venture into the charm sector, reporting on hidden charm baryon states around 4400 MeV, generated from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, which have a strong repercussion on the properties of the $J/\Psi N$ interaction. We also address the interaction of $K^*$ with nuclei and make suggestions to measure the predicted huge width in the medium by means of the transparency ratio. We make a theoretical study of the $\eta(1405) \to \pi^{0} f_0(980)$ and $\eta(1405) \to \pi^{0} a_0(980)$ reactions with an aim to determine the isospin violation and the mixing of the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ resonances. We make use of the chiral unitary approach where these two resonances appear as composite states of two mesons, dynamically generated by the meson-meson interaction provided by chiral Lagrangians. We obtain a very narrow shape for the $f_0(980)$ production in agreement with a BES experiment. As to the amount of isospin violation, or $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ mixing, assuming constant vertices for the primary $\eta(1405)\rightarrow \pi^{0}K\bar{K}$ and $\eta(1405)\rightarrow \pi^{0}\pi^{0}\eta$ production, we find results which are much smaller than found in the recent experimental BES paper, but consistent with results found in two other related BES experiments. We have tried to understand this anomaly by assuming an I=1 mixture in the $\eta(1405)$ wave function, but this leads to a much bigger width of the $f_0(980)$ mass distribution than observed experimentally. The problem is solved by using the primary production driven by $\eta' \to K^* \bar K$ followed by $K^* \to K \pi$, which induces an extra singularity in the loop functions needed to produce the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ resonances. Improving upon earlier work along the same lines, and using the chiral unitary approach, we can now predict absolute values for the ratio $\Gamma(\pi^0, \pi^+ \pi^-)/\Gamma(\pi^0, \pi^0 \eta)$ which are in fair agreement with experiment. We also show that the same results hold if we had the $\eta(1475)$ resonance or a mixture of these two states, as seems to be the case in the BES experiment.
