Abstract

In this paper, we present a detailed study on the phase diagrams of superconducting topological surface states, especially, focusing on the interplay between crystalline symmetry and topology of the effective BdG Hamiltonian. We show that for the $4\times 4$ kinematic Hamiltonian of the normal state, a mirror symmetry $\mathcal{M}$ can be defined, and for the $\mathcal{M}$-odd pairings, the classification of the $8\times8$ BdG Hamiltonian is $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}$, and the time-reversal symmetry is broken intrinsically. The topological non-trivial phase can support chiral Majorana edge modes, and can be realized in the thin films of iron-based superconductor such as FeSeTe., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The warm front end of the PIP2IT accelerator, assem-bled and commissioned at Fermilab, consists of a 15 mA DC, 30 keV H- ion source, a 2 m long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) line, and a 2.1 MeV, 162.5 MHz CW RFQ, followed by a 10 m long Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) line. A part of the commissioning efforts involves operation with the average beam power emulating the operation of the proposed PIP-II accelera-tor, which will have a duty factor of 1.1% or above. Abstract

This review work addresses the recent advances in solving more comprehensive Hamiltonians. The generalized tight-binding model is developed to investigate the feature-rich quantization phenomena in emergent 2D materials. The mutli-orbital bondings, the spin-orbital interactions, the various geometric structures, and the external fields are taken into consideration simultaneously. Specifically, the IV-group layered systems, black phosphorus and MoS$_{2}$ exhibit the unique magnetic quantization. This is clearly indicated in three kinds of Landau levels (LLs), the orbital-, spin- and valley-dependent LL groups, the abnormal LL energy spectra, and the splitting, crossing and anticrossing behaviors. Abstract

Germanene nanoribbons, with buckled structures, exhibit unique electronic properties. The complicated relations among the quantum confinement, the spin-orbital coupling, the magnetic quantization, the electric-field dominated quantum numbers, energy dispersions, energy gap, state degeneracy, and wave functions. Such mechanisms can diversify spatial charge distributions and spin configurations on distinct sublattices. There exist the spin-split quasi-Landau levels and the valley-dependent asymmetric energy spectrum in a composite electric and magnetic field, manly owing to the destruction of z=0 mirror symmetry. The rich electronic structures are revealed in density of states as a lot of special structures. The predicted results could be directly verified by the scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Abstract

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a critical role in cancer initiation and progression, and thus may mediate oncogenic or tumor suppressing effects, as well as be a new class of cancer therapeutic targets. We performed high-throughput sequencing of RNA (RNA-seq) to investigate the expression level of lncRNAs and protein-coding genes in 30 esophageal samples, comprised of 15 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) samples and their 15 paired non-tumor tissues. We further developed an integrative bioinformatics method, denoted URW-LPE, to identify key functional lncRNAs that regulate expression of downstream protein-coding genes in ESCC. A number of known onco-lncRNA and many putative novel ones were effectively identified by URW-LPE. Importantly, we identified lncRNA625 as a novel regulator of ESCC cell proliferation, invasion and migration. ESCC patients with high lncRNA625 expression had significantly shorter survival time than those with low expression. LncRNA625 also showed specific prognostic value for patients with metastatic ESCC. Finally, we identified E1A-binding protein p300 (EP300) as a downstream executor of lncRNA625-induced transcriptional responses. These findings establish a catalog of novel cancer-associated functional lncRNAs, which will promote our understanding of lncRNA-mediated regulation in this malignancy.

Abstract

The Muon (g-2) Experiment, E989 at Fermilab, will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment a factor-of-four more precisely than was done in E821 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. The E821 result appears to be greater than the Standard-Model prediction by more than three standard deviations. When combined with expected improvement in the Standard-Model hadronic contributions, E989 should be able to determine definitively whether or not the E821 result is evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. After a review of the physics motivation and the basic technique, which will use the muon storage ring built at BNL and now relocated to Fermilab, the design of the new experiment is presented. 15. A Mendelian randomization study of the effect of selenium on autoimmune thyroid disease.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The impact of selenium on autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to analyze the causal correlations of selenium with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), autoimmune hyperthyroidism (AIH), and Graves' disease (GD) by Mendelian randomization (MR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms related to selenium, AIT, AIH, and GD were sourced from the IEU Open GWAS project and FinnGen. Exposure-outcome causality was assessed using inverse variance weighted, MR-Egger, and weighted median. Horizontal pleiotropy was examined using the MR-Egger intercept, heterogeneity was evaluated with Cochran's Q test, and the robustness of the results was confirmed via leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: The MR analysis revealed that selenium did not exhibit a causal relationship with AIT (OR 0.993, 95% CI 0.786 to 1.108, p=0.432), AIH (OR 1.066, 95% CI 0.976 to 1.164, p=0.154), or GD (OR 1.052, 95% CI 0.984 to 1.126, p=0.138). Moreover, the MR-Egger intercept and Cochran's Q test demonstrated the absence of horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity in these results (p>0.05). Sensitivity analysis affirmed the robustness of these results. CONCLUSIONS: This MR analysis concluded that selenium was not linked to AIT, AIH, or GD risk. Therefore, indiscriminate selenium supplementation is not advisable for AITD patients without concurrent selenium deficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We summarize the results of two experimental programs at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of BNL to measure the nuclear transparency of nuclei measured in the A(p,2p) quasielastic scattering process near 90 Deg .in the pp center of mass. The incident momenta varied from 5.9 to 14.4 GeV/c, corresponding to 4.8 < Q^2 < 12.7 (GeV/c)^2. First, we describe the measurements with the newer experiment, E850, which had more complete kinematic definition of quasielastic events. In E850 the angular dependence of the nuclear transparency near 90 Deg. c.m., and the nuclear transparency for deuterons was studied. Second, we review the techniques used in an earlier experiment, E834, and show that the two experiments are consistent for the Carbon data. E834 also determines the nuclear transparencies for Li, Al, Cu, and Pb nuclei as well as for C. We find for both E850 and E834 that the A(p,2p) nuclear transparency, unlike that for A(e,e'p) nuclear transparency, is incompatible with a constant value versus energy as predicted by Glauber calculations. The A(p,2p) nuclear transparency for C and Al increases by a factor of two between 5.9 and 9.5 GeV/c incident proton momentum. At its peak the A(p,2p) nuclear transparency is about 80% of the constant A(e,e'p) nuclear transparency. Then the nuclear transparency falls back to the Glauber level again. This oscillating behavior is generally interpreted as an interplay between two components of the pN scattering amplitude; one short ranged and perturbative, and the other long ranged and strongly absorbed in the nuclear medium. 18. Phosphorylation of histone H2AX in response to DNA damage produced by DNA interstrand crosslinking agents

Abstract

Interstrand crosslinking (ICL) agents such as nitrogen mustards and platinum compounds are mainstays of cancer chemotherapy. SJG-136 is a highly potent ICL agent currently in clinical trials. γ-H2AX foci form at the sites of ionizing radiation-induced double strand breaks (DSBs) and their persistence is an indication of radiosensitivity. The aim of this study was to establish if γ-H2AX is a suitable marker of ICL-associated damage. γ-H2AX foci can be detected at pharmacologically relevant doses of ICL agents (0.5 μM HN2, 5 μM cisplatin, 0.01 nM SJG-136), lower than those used to detect ICLs in the modified comet assay (5 μM HN2, 10 μM cisplatin, 1 nM SJG-136). The peak of foci formation followed the peak of ICL formation, and persistence of foci was observed in CHO and human cells defective in either ICL unhooking or homologous recombination (HR). Persistence of foci was also detected in A2780 ovarian cancer cells compared to the paired A2780 cisplatin resistant cells. γ-H2AX was found to be a sensitive marker of ICL-associated damage independent of DSB formation and a potential tool to distinguish ICL-sensitive cells in vitro. γ-H2AX has also been investigated as a pharmacodynamic endpoint in clinical studies. Maximal foci formation was observed at 24 hours post-infusion of SJG-136 in peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from all 16 patients in a phase I clinical trial. Increased foci induction was also detected in two tumour biopsies obtained from patients treated with SJG-136. In contrast to γ-H2AX, a higher level of RAD51 foci was observed in ICL unhooking defective CHO cells compared to the wild type, whereas no foci were observed in HR defective cells following cisplatin treatment. Therefore, both γ-H2AX and RAD51 foci could be useful markers of ICL-associated damage in clinical settings.

Abstract

The reaction 12C(p,2p+n) was measured at beam momenta of 5.9 and 7.5 GeV/c.. We established the quasi-elastic character of the reaction C(p,2p) at $\theta_{cm}\simeq 90^o$, in a kinematically complete measurement. The neutron momentum was measured in triple coincidence with the two emerging high momentum protons. We present the correlation between the momenta of the struck target proton and the neutron. The events are associated with the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. We conclude that two-nucleon short range correlations have been seen experimentally. Abstract

We measured the high-momentum quasi-elastic 12C(p,2p) reaction (at center of mass angle near 90 degrees) for 6 and 7.5 GeV/c incident protons. The three-momentum components of both final state protons were measured and the missing energy and momentum of the target proton in the nucleus were determined. The validity of the quasi-elastic picture was verified up to Fermi momenta of about 450 MeV/c, where it might be questionable. Transverse and longitudinal Fermi momentum distributions of the target proton were measured and compared to independent particle models which do not reproduce the large momentum tails. We also observed that the transverse Fermi distribution gets wider as the longitudinal component increases in the beam direction, in contrast to a simple Fermi gas model., Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures

Abstract

We have compared the decay rates of KL and KS toΠ+ Π- Π0Π0 final states using a subset of the data from the KTeV experiment (E832) at Fermilab. We find that the direct-CP-violation parameter Re (μ’/μ) is equal to [28.0±3.0(stat)±2.8(syst)]×10-4. This result definitively establishes the existence of CP violation in a decay process. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

31. Gender Differences in Online Reading Engagement, Metacognitive Strategies, Navigation Skills and Reading Literacy

Abstract

This study examined how knowledge of metacognitive strategies and navigation skills mediate the relationship between online reading activities and printed reading assessment (PRA) and electronic reading assessment (ERA) across 19 countries using the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2009 database. Participants were 34?104 fifteen-year-old students (female: 50.1%). The results showed that information-seeking activity, knowledge of metacognitive strategies and navigations skills positively predicted ERA and PRA. Social reading activities negatively predicted knowledge of metacognitive strategies and PRA but had no effect on ERA and the navigation skills in most countries. Increased information-seeking reading resulted in higher ERA and PRA as demonstrated by navigation skills and knowledge of metacognitive strategies. Gender differences in online reading engagement were not statistically significant in most countries. However, girls performed better in knowledge of metacognitive strategies, navigation skills and PRA but were not significantly better on ERA. Multiple group comparisons of gender indicated that the hypothesized model held for both boys and girls. Besides the infrastructure of information and communications technology as a tool to access the cyber informational space, students should be empowered to use appropriate strategies and navigation skills to achieve their goals. Implications for teaching and learning practices are discussed.

Abstract

Common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are predicted to collectively explain 40-50% of phenotypic variation in human height, but identifying the specific variants and associated regions requires huge sample sizes1. Here, using data from a genome-wide association study of 5.4 million individuals of diverse ancestries, we show that 12,111 independent SNPs that are significantly associated with height account for nearly all of the common SNP-based heritability. These SNPs are clustered within 7,209 non-overlapping genomic segments with a mean size of around 90 kb, covering about 21% of the genome. The density of independent associations varies across the genome and the regions of increased density are enriched for biologically relevant genes. In out-of-sample estimation and prediction, the 12,111 SNPs (or all SNPs in the HapMap 3 panel2) account for 40% (45%) of phenotypic variance in populations of European ancestry but only around 10-20% (14-24%) in populations of other ancestries. Effect sizes, associated regions and gene prioritization are similar across ancestries, indicating that reduced prediction accuracy is likely to be explained by linkage disequilibrium and differences in allele frequency within associated regions. Finally, we show that the relevant biological pathways are detectable with smaller sample sizes than are needed to implicate causal genes and variants. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive map of specific genomic regions that contain the vast majority of common height-associated variants. Although this map is saturated for populations of European ancestry, further research is needed to achieve equivalent saturation in other ancestries.

Abstract

In this paper, we use the “Family Resemblance Approach” (FRA) as a framework to characterize how scientists view the nature of science (NOS). FRA presents NOS as a “system” that includes clusters or categories of ideas about the cognitive-epistemic and social-institutional aspects of science. For example, the cognitive-epistemic aspects include aims and values such as objectivity and scientific methods such as hypothesis testing. Social-institutional aspects refer to a range of components including social values such as honesty about evidence and institutional contexts of science such as research institutions. Characterized as such, NOS is thus a system of interacting components. The initial account of FRA was proposed by philosophers of science and subsequently adapted and extended for science education including through empirical studies. Yet, there is little understanding of the extent to which FRA coheres with scientists’ own depictions about NOS. Hence, an empirical study was conducted with scientists to investigate their views about FRA as well as their views of NOS using the FRA framework. In so doing, the research sought to explore the utility of FRA from scientists’ point of view. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 17 Taiwanese scientists’ responses to a set of written questions indicates that scientists are in agreement with the FRA account of NOS, and they detail all aspects in their reference to NOS, although the social-institutional aspects are underrepresented in their depiction. Implications for further studies and science education are discussed.
