Abstract

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22\theta_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. Abstract

The new beam position monitor (BPM) system of the injector at the upgrade project of Hefei Light Source (HLS II) has 19 stripline beam position monitors. Most consist of four orthogonal symmetric stripline electrodes. The differences in electronic gain and mismachining tolerance can cause the change of the beam response of the BPM electrodes. This variation will couple the two measured horizontal positions in order to bring the measuring error. To alleviate this effect, a new technique to measure the relative response of the four electrodes has been developed. It is irrelevant to the beam charge and the related coefficient can be theoretical calculated. The effect of electrodes coupling on this technique is analyzed. The calibration data is used to fit the gain for all 19 injector beam position monitors. Abstract

The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle theta13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its nonzero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of 300 - 2000m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. Abstract

We describe the automated calibration system for the antineutrino detectors in the Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment. This system consists of 24 identical units instrumented on 8 identical 20-ton liquid scintillator detectors. Each unit is a fully automated robotic system capable of deploying an LED and various radioactive sources into the detector along given vertical axes. Selected results from performance studies of the calibration system are reported.

Abstract

We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is $0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.})$. An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.})$ in a three-neutrino framework., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures. Abstract

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is $R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$. A rate-only analysis finds $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst})$ in a three-neutrino framework., Comment: 5 figures. Version to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin$^22\theta_{13}$ at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements., Comment: 24 pages, 36 figures

Abstract

A systematic study on the fracture surface of brittle Mg-, Fe-, and Co-based metallic glasses under compressive loading is approached and a fracture mechanism is proposed. Experimentally, the metallic glass samples are compressed into many small fragments, displaying an explosion fracture feature. Therefore, an energy equilibrium model is employed to describe the fracture processes of those brittle metallic glasses. Furthermore, some regular nanoscale steps, which were scarcely discovered, are found on the mirror region on their fracture surfaces. It is suggested that such nanoscale steps are associated with the energy distribution in metallic glasses and are created by the shear waves generated by the instability of crack propagation during the explosion rupture processes. Based on the comparison of experimental observations with numerical calculations, we recommend a novel model for interpreting the development of nanoscale steps on the dynamic fracture surfaces of these brittle metallic glasses, which appropriately describes the experimental findings. Abstract

The new beam position monitor (BPM) system of the injector at the upgrade project of Hefei Light Source (HLS II) has 19 stripline beam position monitors. Most consist of four orthogonal symmetric stripline electrodes. The differences in electronic gain and mismachining tolerance can cause the change of the beam response of the BPM electrodes. This variation will couple the two measured horizontal positions in order to bring the measuring error. To alleviate this effect, a new technique to measure the relative response of the four electrodes has been developed. It is irrelevant to the beam charge and the related coefficient can be theoretical calculated. The effect of electrodes coupling on this technique is analyzed. The calibration data is used to fit the gain for all 19 injector beam position monitors. Abstract

Pollutants discharge from coal combustion is one of the main causes of smog and haze. Many countries focus on research and development of clean combustion, waste heat utilization and removal of pollutants (e.g. Dust, NOx and SOx) and other key technology and equipment considering the whole process of coal-fired industrial boiler emissions and energy efficiency. In this paper, we make a comparative analysis of domestic and foreign coal-fired industrial boilers ultra-low emissions technology, and points out the research breakthroughs and achievements our country may get in the future. Abstract

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) bands that distinguish Meloidogyne hapla and M. chitwoodi from each other, and from other root-knot nematode species, were identified using a series of random octamer primers. The species-specific amplified DNA fragments were cloned and sequenced, and then the sequences were used to design 20-mer primer pairs that specifically amplified a DNA fragment from each species. Using the primer pairs, successful amplifications from single juveniles were readily attained. A mixture of four primers in a single PCR reaction mixture was shown to identify single juveniles of M. hapla and M. chitwoodi. To confirm specificity, the primers were used to amplify DNA from several isolates of M. hapla that originated from different crops and locations in North America and also from isolates of M. chitwoodi that differed in host range. In characterizing the M. hapla isolates, it was noted that there was a mitochondrial DNA polymorphism among isolates for cleavage by the restriction endonuclease DraI.
