2. Spin noise spectroscopy of optical light shifts

Abstract

Light induced non-equilibrium spin noise spectroscopy is theoretically and experimentally shown to be an efficient technique to reveal the structure and the coherent effects in the probed transition. Indeed, using metastable helium, the spin noise spectrum is shown to exhibit a dual-peak structure around the Larmor frequency. This previously unobserved feature is due to the light shifts of the involved levels and strongly depends on the probe power, detuning, and polarization orientation. Both numerical and analytical models reproduce very well the details of the split spin noise spectra: this technique thus allows a simple and direct measurement of the light shifts, and its polarization dependence permits to reveal the level structure in a non ambiguous manner.

We perform spin noise spectroscopy experiments in metastable helium atoms at room temperature, with a probe light whose frequency is blue detuned from the D0 line. Both circular birefringence fluctuations (Faraday noise) and linear birefringence fluctuations (ellipticity noise) are explored theoretically and experimentally. In particular, it is shown that in both cases but for different optical detunings, two noise resonances are isolated at the Larmor frequency and at twice the Larmor frequency with a behaviour, which strongly depends on the orientation of the probe field polarization. The simple structure of metastable helium allows us to probe, model and explain the changes in the behavior of these peaks in terms of circular and linear dichroisms and birefringences as well as in terms of spin oscillation modes., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

PD treatment patterns were described for the subset of patients who had no previously observed PD treatments or diagnoses (ie, the incident cohort). HRU and healthcare costs associated with PD symptoms were assessed for all patients with PD (ie, the overall cohort) and that associated with treatment-related AEs were assessed for the subset of patients who received PD treatments after PD diagnosis (ie, the active treatment cohort), using longitudinal models with repeated measures.Results: Overall, 318,582 patients were included (mean age at PD diagnosis: 77.4 years; 53.3% female). Among patients in the incident cohort (N=214,829), 51.1% initiated levodopa monotherapy and 5.9% initiated dopamine agonists (DAs) monotherapy as first-line treatment. The proportion of incident patients treated with DAs and other PD therapies generally increased from post-diagnosis years 1 to 10. The median time from diagnosis to PD treatment initiation was 2.0 months; the median time to treatment discontinuation was the longest with levodopa (18.7 months), followed by DAs (9.5 months). In the overall cohort, PD symptoms, especially motor symptoms and severe motor symptoms, were associated with significantly higher rates of HRU and costs. In the active treatment cohort (N=234,298), treatment-related AEs were associated with significantly higher rates of HRU and medical costs.Conclusion: While levodopa is still the mainstay of PD management, considerable heterogeneity exists in real-world treatment patterns. Overall, PD symptoms and AEs were associated with significantly higher HRU and healthcare costs, suggesting unmet medical needs for PD treatments with better tolerability profiles.Keywords: Parkinson’s disease, treatment patterns, adverse events, healthcare resource utilization, healthcare costs

13. Single photon wavefront-splitting interference: An illustration of the light quantum in action

Abstract

We present a new realization of the textbook experiment consisting in single-photon interference based on the pulsed, optically excited photoluminescence of a single colour centre in a diamond nanocrystal. Interferences are created by wavefront-splitting with a Fresnel's biprism and observed by registering the "single-photon clicks" with an intensified CCD camera. This imaging detector provides also a real-time movie of the build-up of the single-photon fringes. We perform a second experiment with two detectors sensitive to photons that follow either one or the other interference path. 14. Precise Unbiased Estimation in Randomized Experiments Using Auxiliary Observational Data

Abstract

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) admit unconfounded design-based inference--randomization largely justifies the assumptions underlying statistical effect estimates--but often have limited sample sizes. However, researchers may have access to big observational data on covariates and outcomes from RCT non-participants. For example, data from A/B tests conducted within an educational technology platform exist alongside historical observational data drawn from student logs. We outline a design-based approach to using such observational data for variance reduction in RCTs. First, we use the observational data to train a machine learning algorithm predicting potential outcomes using covariates, and use that algorithm to generate predictions for RCT participants. Then, we use those predictions, perhaps alongside other covariates, to adjust causal effect estimates with a flexible, design-based covariate-adjustment routine. In this way there is no danger of biases from the observational data leaking into the experimental estimates, which are guaranteed to be exactly unbiased regardless of whether the machine learning models are "correct" in any sense or whether the observational samples closely resemble RCT samples. We demonstrate the method in analyzing 33 randomized A/B tests, and show that it decreases standard errors relative to other estimators, sometimes substantially. 16. Nanofiber based displacement sensor

Abstract

We report on the realization of a displacement sensor based on an optical nanofiber. A single gold nano-sphere is deposited on top of a nanofiber and the system is placed within a standing wave which serves as a position ruler. Scattered light collected within the guided mode of the fiber gives a direct measure of the nanofiber displacement. We calibrated our device and found a sensitivity up to 1.2~nm/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. A mechanical model based on the Mie scattering theory is then used to evaluate the optically induced force on the nanofiber by an external laser. With our sensing system, we demonstrate that an external force of 1~pN applied at the nanofiber waist can be detected.

Abstract

We report on a versatile method to compensate the linear attenuation in a medium, independently of its microscopic origin. The method exploits diffraction-limited Bessel beams and tailored on-axis intensity profiles which are generated using a phase-only spatial light modulator. This technique for compensating one of the most fundamental limiting processes in linear optics is shown to be efficient for a wide range of experimental conditions (modifying the refractive index and the attenuation coefficient). Finally, we explain how this method can be advantageously exploited in applications ranging from bio-imaging light sheet microscopy to quantum memories for future quantum communication networks.

Abstract

We report the fabrication and characterization of photonic structures using tapered optical nanofibers. Thanks to the extension of the evanescent electromagnetic field outside of the nanofiber two types of devices can be built: a ring interferometer and a knot resonator. We propose a general approach to predict the properties of these structures using the linear coupling theory. In addition, we describe a new source of birefringence due to the ovalization of a nanofiber under strong bending, known in mechanical engineering as the Brazier effect.

20. Operational solar forecasting for the real-time market

Abstract

Despite the significant progress made in solar forecasting over the last decade, most of the proposed models cannot be readily used by independent system operators (ISOs). This article proposes an operational solar forecasting algorithm that is closely aligned with the real-time market (RTM) forecasting requirements of the California ISO (CAISO). The algorithm first uses the North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast system to generate hourly forecasts for a 5-h period that are issued 12 h before the actual operating hour, satisfying the lead-time requirement. Subsequently, the world's fastest similarity search algorithm is adopted to downscale the hourly forecasts generated by NAM to a 15-min resolution, satisfying the forecast-resolution requirement. The 5-h-ahead forecasts are repeated every hour, following the actual rolling update rate of CAISO. Both deterministic and probabilistic forecasts generated using the proposed algorithm are empirically evaluated over a period of 2 years at 7 locations in 5 climate zones.

Abstract

Optical polarization has attracted considerable research attention by extra detection dimension in angular space, flourishing modern optoelectronic applications. Nonetheless, purposive polarization controlling at nanoscales and even at the single-particle level constitutes a challenge. Plasmonic nanoantenna opens up new perspectives in polarization state modification. Herein, we report angular-dependent upconversion luminescence (UCL) of rare-earth ions doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in both emission and excitation polarization via constructing angularly anisotropic plasmonic local-field distributions in gold nanorods (Au NRs) antennae with different configurations at a single-particle level. The UCL of UCNP tailored by plasmonic Au NRs nanoantennae is enhanced and exhibits linear polarization. The highest enhancement factor of 138 is obtained in the collinear Au NR-UCNP-Au NR configuration under parallel excitation. Simultaneously, the maximum degree of linear polarization (DOLP) of UCL with factors of 85% and 81% are achieved in the same structure in emission and excitation polarization measurements, respectively. The observed linear polarizations and UCL enhancements are due to varied resonant responses at 660 nm and the anisotropic near-field enhancement in different nanoantennae-load UCNP. The theoretical simulations reveal the periodic changing of near-field enhancement factors of nanoantennae in angular space with the incident light polarization angles and are well-matched with the experimental results.

Abstract

Synchronous laser beam scanning is a common technique used in single-photon imaging where the spatial resolution is primarily determined by the beam divergence angle. In this context, Bessel beams have been investigated as they can overcome the diffraction limit associated with traditional Gaussian beams. Notably, the central spot of a Bessel beam retains its size almost unchanged within a non-diffractive distance. However, the presence of sidelobes in the Bessel beam can negatively impact spatial resolution. To address this challenge, we have developed a single-photon imaging system with high-depth resolution, which allows for the suppression of echo photons from the sidelobe light in the depth image, particularly when their flight time differs from that of the central spot. In our LiDAR setup, we successfully achieved high-resolution scanning imaging with a spatial resolution of approximately 0.5 mm while also demonstrating a high-depth resolution of 12 mm. Abstract

Conditional preparation is a well-established technique for quantum state engineering of light. A general trend is to increase the number of heralding detection events in such realization to reach larger photon-number states or their arbitrary superpositions. In contrast to pulsed implementations, where detections only occur within the pulse window, for continuous-wave light the temporal separation of the conditioning detections is an additional degree of freedom and a critical parameter. Based on the theoretical study by A.E.B. Nielsen and K. Molmer and on a continuous-wave two-mode squeezed vacuum from a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator, we experimentally investigate the generation of two-photon state with tunable delay between the heralding events. The present work illustrates the temporal multimode features in play for conditional state generation based on continuous-wave light sources.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a second tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) versus a non‐TNFi biologic following discontinuation of a TNFi for patients with polyarticular‐course juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA). Using the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Registry, patients with pJIA who started receiving a second biologic following a first TNFi were identified. Patients were required to have no active uveitis on the index date and a visit six months after the index date. Outcome measures included Clinical Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score with a maximum of 10 active joints (cJADAS10), cJADAS10 inactive disease (ID; ≤2.5) and cJADAS10 minimal disease activity (MiDA; ≤5). Multiple imputation was used to account for missing data. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were calculated using propensity score quintiles to compare outcomes at six months following second biologic initiation. There were 216 patients included, 84% initially received etanercept, and most patients stopped receiving it because of its ineffectiveness (74%). A total of 183 (85%) started receiving a second TNFi, and 33 (15%) started receiving a non‐TNFi. Adalimumab was the most common second biologic received (71% overall, 84% of second TNFi), and tocilizumab was the most common non‐TNFi second biologic received (9% overall, 58% of non‐TNFi). There was no difference between receiving TNFi versus non‐TNFi in cJADAS10 ID (29% vs 25%; aOR 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.47–3.20) or at least MiDA (43% vs 39%; aOR 1.11, 95% CI 0.47–2.62) at six months. Most patients with pJIA started receiving TNFi rather than non‐TNFi as their second biologic, and there were no differences in disease activity at six months.

Abstract

We propose and experimentally realize a novel versatile protocol that allows the quantum state engineering of heralded optical coherent-state superpositions. This scheme relies on a two-mode squeezed state, linear mixing and a $n$-photon detection. It is optimally using expensive non-Gaussian resources to build up only the key non-Gaussian part of the targeted state. In the experimental case of a two-photon detection based on high-efficiency superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, the freely propagating state exhibits a 67% fidelity with a squeezed even coherent-state superposition with a size $|\alpha|^2$=3. The demonstrated procedure and the achieved rate will facilitate the use of such superpositions in subsequent protocols, including fundamental tests and optical hybrid quantum information implementations.

Abstract

Sensitive mid‐infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is highly demanded in various fields ranging from industrial inspection, biomedical diagnosis to astronomical observation. However, the detection sensitivity of conventional MIR spectrometers is severely limited by excessive noises for existing infrared sensors, which hinders widespread use in photon‐scarce scenarios. Here, a broadband MIR single‐photon time‐stretch spectrometer is devised and implemented based on high‐fidelity spectral upconversion and time‐correlated coincidence counting. Specifically, a nanophotonic supercontinuum illumination covering 2.4–4.2 µm is nonlinearly converted to the near‐infrared band, where low‐loss single‐mode fiber and high‐performance silicon detector can be leveraged to facilitate dispersive operation and sensitive detection, respectively. The arrival time for the dispersed upconversion photons is precisely registered with a low‐timing‐jitter photon counter, which enables us to obtain a high spectral resolution about 0.5 cm−1 under a low‐light‐level illumination down to 0.14 photons/nm/pulse. In comparison to previous MIR upconversion spectrometers, the presented time‐stretch architecture favors single‐pixel simplicity and high‐throughput acquisition for the single‐photon spectral measurement. The achieved MIR spectroscopic features of broadband spectral coverage, sub‐wavenumber resolution, single‐photon sensitivity, and room‐temperature operation would stimulate immediate applications in material and life sciences. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Obesity induces insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, impacting human health. The relationship between obesity, gut microbiota, and regulatory mechanisms has been studied extensively. Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, potentially reduces insulin resistance. However, the mechanism through which DOP affects gut microbiota and alleviates obesity‐induced insulin resistance in rats requires further investigation. RESULTS: The current study aimed to assess the impact of DOP on gut microbiota and insulin resistance in rats on a high‐fat diet. The results revealed that DOP effectively reduced blood lipids, glucose disorders, oxidative stress, and inflammatory infiltration in the liver of obese Sprague Dawley rats. This was achieved by downregulating SOCS3 expression and upregulating insulin receptor substrate‐1 (IRS‐1) by regulating the JAK/STAT/SOCS3 signaling pathway. Notably, DOP intervention enhanced the abundance of beneficial gut microbiota and reduced harmful microbiota. Correlation analysis demonstrated significant associations among intestinal microbiota, SOCS3‐mediated IRS‐1 expression, and inflammatory factors. CONCLUSION: Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide regulated the gut microbiota, enhanced IRS‐1 expression, and mitigated liver injury and insulin resistance due to a high‐fat diet. These findings depict the potential anti‐insulin resistance properties of DOP and offer further evidence for addressing obesity and its complications. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
