Ceramic components often fail by a brittle fracture mode during the service process. Various factors can affect the fracture properties of ceramics. Experimental methods are usually used to investigate fracture behaviors. However, they give a composite result and the contribution to fracture from each factor is not clear. In the present work, a micromechanical model is developed to quantitatively characterize the fracture properties of ceramics at elevated temperatures. The control method for the microstructures of ceramics is proposed based on the Voronoi diagram. The temperature‐dependent surface energy model of ceramics is revised by considering the effects of thermal decomposition and phase transformation. The interface energies at different temperatures are obtained by the inversion method. The criterion for crack propagation of ceramics at elevated temperatures is developed based on the G‐criterion. The effects of temperature, grain size, grain size distribution, and grain boundary phase thickness on the fracture behaviors of silicon nitride are studied numerically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The PISA 2022 literacy assessment highlights a significant decline in math performance among most OECD countries, with the magnitude of this decline being approximately three times that of the previous round. Remarkably, Hong Kong, Macao, Taipei, Singapore, Japan, and Korea ranked in the top six among all participating countries or economies, with Taipei, Singapore, Japan, and Korea also demonstrating improved performance. Given the widespread concern about the factors influencing secondary-school students' mathematical literacy, this paper adopts machine learning and the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method to analyze 34,968 samples and 151 features from six East Asian education systems within the PISA 2022 dataset, aiming to pinpoint the crucial factors that affect middle-school students' mathematical literacy. First, the XGBoost model has the highest prediction accuracy for math literacy performance. Second, 15 variables were identified as significant predictors of mathematical literacy across the student population, particularly variables such as mathematics self-efficacy (MATHEFF) and expected occupational status (BSMJ). Third, mathematics self-efficacy was determined to be the most influential factor. Fourth, the factors influencing mathematical literacy vary among individual students, including the key influencing factors, the direction (positive or negative) of their impact, and the extent of this influence. Finally, based on our findings, four recommendations are proffered to enhance the mathematical literacy performance of secondary-school students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To observe the effect of moxibustion on the protein and mRNA expressions of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1 (CRFR1) in hypothalamus of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced experimental colitis rats, and to explore the central mechanisms of moxibustion in improving visceral pain and the pain-related emotions in experimental colitis rats. Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a normal group (NG), a model group (MG), a herb-partitioned moxibustion group (HPMG) and a sham herb-partitioned moxibustion group (SHPMG). Except the NG, rats in the remaining three groups all received TNBS enema to establish experimental colitis models. The HPMG received herb-partitioned moxibustion (HPM) at bilateral Tianshu (ST 25) and Qihai (CV 6) for intervention; for the SHPMG, the herbal cakes and moxa cones were only placed on the acupoints but not ignited; rats in the MG and NG were only fixed in the same way as those in the HPMG but did not receive any treatment. At the end of the intervention, the abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) score, the open field test (OFT) score and the elevated plus maze (EPM) score were observed to measure the changes in visceral pain and pain-related emotions of the rats. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to examine the expressions of CRF and CRFR1 proteins in hypothalamus; the fluorescence-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the expressions of CRF and CRFR1 mRNAs in hypothalamus. Compared with the NG, the AWR score increased significantly and the OFT and EPM scores dropped significantly in the MG (all P 0.05). HPM can down-regulate the abnormally increased expressions of CRF and CRFR1 proteins and mRNAs in hypothalamus of the TNBS-induced experimental colitis rats, which is plausibly one of its action mechanisms in mitigating visceral pain and the pain-related emotions in the experimental colitis rats.

Aim: To discuss the immunological mechanism in electroacupuncture (EA) treatment of dry eye syndrome (DES) by targeting the changes in conjunctival cytokine expression profile.Method: Eligible DES patients were randomized into an EA group (EAG) or an acupuncture group (AG). The ocular surface disease index (OSDI), amount of tear production, and tear film break-up time (BUT) were observed to evaluate the efficacy. Conjunctival cells were collected from both effective and invalid cases to observe the expressions of cytokines by protein microarray. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were used for functional cluster and signaling pathway analysis of the differentially expressed proteins. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to verify the specific differential proteins.Result: After treatment, OSDI dropped and BUT extended in both groups, and the tear production increased only in the EAG (all P < .01). Compared with the AG, the improvement in tear production was more significant in the EAG (P < .01). There were 17 differentially expressed conjunctival cytokines between the effective and invalid cases in the EAG, and those expressed higher than the limit of detection (LOD) included monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), regulated on activation in normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1). GO analysis showed that the differential cytokines were mainly involved in cellular interaction, signaling pathways and reactions to stimuli. KEGG analysis revealed that the signaling pathways of these cytokines were mainly responsible for interactions between cytokines or between cytokines and their receptors, such as Jak-STAT signaling pathway, chemokine signaling pathway, and tumor necrosis factor signaling pathway. Conclusion: EA can effectively treat DES by improving the symptoms, increasing tear secretion and extending BUT, which is possibly related to its regulation on the conjunctival cytokine expressions.

Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) treatment has been found to ameliorate clinical symptoms in patients with dry eye, but its mechanisms are still not entirely clear. Objective: To study the regulation of EA on ocular surface function and the corneal reactive oxygen species (ROS)/thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP)/Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammatory signaling pathway in dry eye syndrome (DES) model rats. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into five groups: Normal, Model, Model + EA, Model + NAC (N-actetylcysteine) and Model + NS (normal saline). The DES model was developed by subcutaneous injection of scopolamine hydrobromide with exposure to an air draft in the latter four groups. After intervention, the Schirmer I test (SIT), tear film break-up time (BUT) and ROS content were measured, the histopathological changes of corneal tissues were observed, and the mRNA and protein expression levels of TXNIP, NLRP3, apoptosis-associated Speck-like protein containing CARD (ASC), caspase-1, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18 were detected. Results: Compared with the Model group, the SIT and BUT increased significantly in the Model + EA group after intervention (p < 0.05), and the corneal injury was improved. Corneal ROS content declined in both Model + EA and Model + NAC groups (p < 0.05), and mRNA expression of TXNIP, NLRP3, ASC and caspase-1 also decreased (p < 0.01). Corneal protein expression of TXNIP, NLRP3, IL-1β and IL-18 decreased significantly in the Model + EA group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Inhibiting the ROS/TXNIP/NLRP3 signaling pathway may be the mechanism underlying the role of EA in improving corneal injury in DES model rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. This systematic review aims to critically evaluate the efficacy of manual acupuncture for optic atrophy. Eight English and Chinese databases, including Cochrane Library, EMbase, PubMed, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), as well as ongoing trials registered with the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, were searched to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) studying manual acupuncture for optic atrophy compared to medication alone. The quality of evidence was assessed using Cochrane Collaboration’s risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager version 5.3. Nine studies were identified and included for meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed significant differences in favor of manual acupuncture or manual acupuncture plus medication compared with medication alone in the following outcome measures: visual acuity (MD = 0.18, 95% CI [0.17, 0.20], P < 0.00001), mean sensitivity of visual field (MD = 2.11, 95% CI [1.90, 2.32], P < 0.00001), the latent period of P-VEP100 (MD = -6.80, 95% CI [-8.94, -4.66], P < 0.00001), the total effectiveness (264 eyes) (OR = 3.22, 95% CI [1.88, 5.51], P P < 0.00001). Despite statistical advantages of manual acupuncture in the literature, due to serious methodological flaws in study design, it cannot be concluded that manual acupuncture is more effective than medicine alone. It is essential that a properly controlled clinical trial is designed and controls are established to exclude placebo effects.

- Abstract
Motivation analysis is significant in inspecting illegal power consumption behavior. Based on enterprise life cycle theory, this study proposes enterprise electricity consumption life cycle to conceptually aid the analysis of motives for enterprise illegal power consumption behavior. The identification of the aforementioned life cycle is achieved by clustering. We propose a deep clustering model based on the joint optimization of Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) autoencoder and an improved K-prototypes algorithm. The proposed model utilizes GRU autoencoder to learn the latent features of high-dimensional enterprise electricity data and dynamically adjust the distance metric in K-prototypes algorithm based on the reconstruction error of GRU autoencoder. By jointly optimizing the two components, the proposed model can effectively cluster the enterprise electricity consumers and enterprises’ electricity consumption life cycle is identified based on the features and patterns of enterprises in each cluster. Experiment demonstrates that the proposed model can effectively capture the non-linear transformation from electricity data to its latent space and yield superior clustering results, and can provide data support for the identification of enterprise electricity consumption life cycle.

- Abstract
Yersinia enterocoliticais a foodborne pathogen that can infect food not only in its planktonic state but also as a biofilm on contact surfaces, making recurrent infections difficult to control. This article discusses various ways in which cinnamaldehyde can combat Y. enterocolitica. These include its effects on the permeability, integrity, and amino acid structure of cell membranes as well as on intracellular energy metabolism. We also investigated the effects of cinnamaldehyde on the formation of biofilms by Y. enterocolitica, including interference with quorum-sensing pathways, bacterial motility and adhesion, extracellular polymer production, and metabolic activity within the biofilm. Our results demonstrated that the minimum concentration of cinnamaldehyde required to effectively inhibit Y. enterocoliticais 0.625 mg/mL. It causes cell death by damaging the membrane, disrupting oxidative respiratory processes, interfering with cellular homeostasis, and disrupting cell function. Correspondingly, a concentration of 0.078 mg/mL cinnamaldehyde can suppress the production of biofilm and signalling molecules. This research aims to explore the mechanism by which cinnamaldehyde inhibits the activity of Y. enterocoliticaand its biofilm, with the goal of providing more insight into whether cinnamaldehyde can be used as a natural, plant-based preservative and anti-biofilm agent.
