Variation in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration can dictate plant growth and development and shape plant evolution. For paired populations of 31 Arabidopsis accessions, respectively, grown under 100 or 380 ppm CO2, we compared phenotypic traits related to vegetative growth and flowering time. Four accessions showed the least variation in measured growth traits between 100 ppm CO2 and 380 ppm CO2 conditions, though all accessions exhibited a dwarf stature with reduced biomass under low CO2. Our comparison of accessions also incorporated the altitude (indicated in meters) above sea level at which they were originally collected. Notably, An-1 (50 m), Est (50 m), Ws-0 (150 m), and Ler-0 (600 m) showed the least differences (lower decrease or increase) between treatments in flowering time, rosette leaf number, specific leaf weight, stomatal density, and less negative δ13C values. When variations for all traits and seedset were considered together, Ws-0 exhibited the least change between treatments. Our results showed that physiological and phenotypic responses to low CO2 varied among these accessions and did not correlate linearly with altitude, thus suggesting that slower growth or smaller stature under ambient CO2 may potentially belie a fitness advantage for sustainable growth under low CO2 availability.

Research Findings: Pattern creation (PC) is creating a pattern unit based on children's own understanding of the concept of pattern, without being provided with a pattern unit as a reference, and the repetition of this pattern unit to create a complete structure. This study explored the performance and predictors of pattern creation (PC) among Chinese preschoolers at five to six years of age. Altogether 48 children (Mage = 5.44 years, SD = 0.38, 56% girls) from one public kindergarten in Shanghai participated in two experiments designed to test individual PC abilities and cognitive and mathematical skills. The results indicated that: (1) 5 to 6-year-old Chinese preschoolers could create basic patterns of different types (single linear patterns, multiple linear patterns, and circular patterns) and different levels (one-dimensional Pattern, multi-dimensional Pattern, and no Pattern) with various self-designed patterning strategies (e.g., unit extraction, one-to-one appearance matching, counting elements with different colors and shapes, and self-talking); (2) visual working memory and series relations in reasoning ability were significantly related to children's PC performance, among which the visual working memory served as a unique predictor of children's overall PC competence. Practice or Policy: These findings provided empirical evidence and a profound understanding of young children's PC competence and patterning strategies and highlighted the impact of visual working memory and series relations on PC in early learning. Anthurium andraeanum is a tropical ornamental flower. The cost of Anthurium production is higher under low temperature (non-freezing) conditions; therefore, it is important to increase its cold tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of Anthurium to cold stress remain elusive. In this study, comparative physiological and transcriptome sequencing analyses of two cultivars with contrasting cold tolerances were conducted to evaluate the cold stress response at the flowering stage. The activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase and the contents of proline, soluble sugar, and malondialdehyde increased under cold stress in the leaves of the cold tolerant cultivar Elegang (E) and cold susceptible cultivar Menghuang (MH), while the soluble protein content decreased in MH and increased in E. Using RNA sequencing, 24,695 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from comparisons between cultivars under the same conditions or between the treatment and control groups of a single cultivar, 9132 of which were common cold-responsive DEGs. Heat-shock proteins and pectinesterases were upregulated in E and downregulated in MH, indicating that these proteins are essential for Anthurium cold tolerance. Furthermore, four modules related to cold treatment were obtained by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. The expression of the top 20 hub genes in these modules was induced by cold stress in E or MH, suggesting they might be crucial contributors to cold tolerance. DEGs were significantly enriched in plant hormone signal transduction pathways, trehalose metabolism, and ribosomal proteins, suggesting these processes play important roles in Anthurium's cold stress response.
