Wind energy, as an inexhaustible energy source, has become a focal point in the development of new energy for ships. Sail-assisted technology, which leverages wind power, has been successfully applied to ship propulsion. The propulsion performance of sail-assisted ships is affected by the interference characteristics among multiple wingsails. To investigate interference characteristics, an arrangement scheme involving two-element wingsails and considering the relative wind direction angle was established. To obtain the inter-stage interference characteristics of wingsails, the Reynolds average N-S equation was used in the numerical simulation conducted under steady operating conditions. The results indicate that, at the relative wind angles of 30°, 90°, and 120°, the minimum horizontal spacing in a single row arrangement scheme is 1.5c. However, at relative wind angles of 90° and 120°, inter-stage interference may induce stall conditions in the wingsails. In a double-row arrangement scheme, the wake of the upstream wingsail interferes with the flow of the downstream sail at relative wind angles of 90°. An optimal propulsion performance is achieved with a horizontal spacing of 4c and a longitudinal spacing of 10c. Moreover, the interference performance of the two-element wingsails can be enhanced through a horizontal offset arrangement. This study provides a reference for the arrangement of wingsails on ships. Small wind turbines are often sited in more complex environments than in open terrain. These sites include locations near buildings, trees and other obstacles, and in such situations, the wind is normally highly three-dimensional, turbulent, unstable and weak. There is a need to understand the turbulent flow conditions for a small wind turbine in the built environment. This knowledge is crucial for input into the design process of a small wind turbine to accurately predict blade fatigue loads and lifetime and to ensure that it operates safely with a performance that is optimized for the environment. Computational fluid dynamics is a useful method to provide predictions of local wind flow patterns and to investigate turbulent flow conditions at small wind turbine sites, in a manner that requires less time and investment than actual measurements. This article presents the results of combining a computational fluid dynamics package (ANSYS CFX software) with a stochastic simulator (TurbSim) as an approach to investigate the turbulent flow conditions on the rooftop of a building where small wind turbines are sited. The findings of this article suggest that the combination of a computational fluid dynamics package with the TurbSim stochastic simulator is a promising tool to assess turbulent flow conditions for small wind turbines on the roof of buildings. In particular, in the prevailing wind direction, the results show a significant gain in accuracy in using TurbSim to generate wind speed and turbulence kinetic energy profiles for the inlet of the computational fluid dynamics domain rather than using a logarithmic wind-speed profile and a pre-set value of turbulence intensity in the computational fluid dynamics code. The results also show that small wind turbine installers should erect turbines in the middle of the roof of the building and avoid the edges of the roof as well as areas on the roof close to the windward and leeward walls of the building in the prevailing wind direction. The computational fluid dynamics calculation can be accomplished by solving either compressible or incompressible Navier–Stokes equations to determine the flow-field variables of the noise source. The proper assumption depends on both the physical situation and the Mach number. Although in cavitating devices usually we are dealing with low Mach number flow, cavitation is an acoustic phenomenon that can be affected by compressibility. Cavitation behaves acoustically as a monopole and it is mentioned by some researchers that incompressible solution is sufficient to study the dipole sources. However, in order to study the monopole (and quadrupole) sources a compressible solution may be required. In this study, the role of compressibility in computing noise generated at a cavitating single-hole orifice was investigated using large eddy simulation and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings formulation. The fluid zone downstream of the orifice where the cavitation occurs was evaluated as the acoustic source which generates sound. Time-accurate solutions of the flow-field variables on source surfaces were obtained from both compressible and incompressible flow simulations. Three cases of cavitation were studied and the sound pressure signals far downstream of the orifice were computed by the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings formulation. For a developed cavitation regime at low frequencies, there is a big discrepancy between the computed values of sound pressure level from compressible and incompressible simulations, and at higher frequencies greater than 6 kHz, both simulation methods provide almost the same values for sound pressure levels. For a super cavitation regime, both compressible and incompressible simulations provide similar values for sound pressure levels at frequencies greater than 2 kHz. The results of this work demonstrate that the compressibility has a significant role in terms of computing noise generated at a cavitating orifice and cannot be ignored, especially when the noise generated by developed cavitation regimes at low frequencies is investigated.
