4. Case Study: Creation of a Degree Program in Computer Security. White Paper.

Abstract

This paper reports on research into the field of computer security, and undergraduate degrees offered in that field. Research described in the paper reveals only one computer security program at the associate's degree level in the entire country. That program, at Texas State Technical College in Waco, is a 71-credit-hour program leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Network Technology degree and focuses heavily on computer networks and operating systems, containing courses that prepare individuals for careers on corporate security teams. The majority of computer security and information security training is offered in master's and doctoral-level programs. The paper proposes Norwalk Community College (NCC) in Norwalk, Connecticut, develop a new degree program at NCC. It also details the process of developing the degree program, starting with advisory committee members' development of a knowledge and skills list for entry-level computer security professionals, identification of the components that could be taught in a formal program of study, and the packaging of knowledge and skills components into logical course delivery units. The paper argues for development of similar programs at other community colleges. (NB)

13. Masculinity, hybridity and nostalgia in French colonial fiction films of the 1930s

Abstract

The present study explores the problematics of race, ethnicity, nation and gender with reference to the relatively neglected body of colonial films produced in France during the 1930s. This troubled period was ushered in by the Wall Street crash of 1929 and by the advent of film sound. It ended with the start of the Second World War which marked what in hindsight can be seen as the beginning of the end of Europe's colonial empires. The first part of the thesis lays the theoretical foundations which underpin this study, it examines the historical and cultural contexts within which these films were inscribed and it attempts a definition of the somewhat nebulous concept of 'colonial cinema'. The second part focuses on a number of colonial 'types' - the 'colonised', the historical figure, the settler and the legionnaire - around which French, masculine and imperial identities were constructed. Conducting both an ideological and semiotic analysis of a number of filmic texts, and making use of various theoretical approaches - such as studies on the nature of myths, post-colonial theory, gender representation studies, and moral and political philosophy - this thesis investigates the discursive positions adopted in the films, which are found to be mostly in tune with the dominant interwoven discourses about empire, the nation and masculinity, whilst also setting out to uncover various slippages and silences which allow for the expression of uncertainties and ambivalences. Particular emphasis is put on two notions which are found to permeate these texts and contribute to unsettling preferred images of Frenchness and masculinity, namely 'nostalgia' and 'hybridity'. This study therefore aims to challenge prevailing notions of French colonial films as dichotomous representations of empire expressing a monolithic sense of French racial superiority and the jingoistic celebration of national achievement and masculine prowess. Close analysis of these films reveals them to be polysemic, multi-layered texts. They tell us less about the reality of the colonial world and more about the mindset of those responsible for its representation, and who were deeply preoccupied with struggles in metropolitan France and wracked by anxieties about masculine, imperial and national identities.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a strong genetic component; however, the underlying pathways are not well understood. Dahl salt-sensitive (SS)/Jr rats spontaneously develop CKD with age and are used to investigate the genetic determinants of CKD. However, there are currently several genetically diverse Dahl SS rats maintained at various institutions and the extent to which some exhibit age-related CKD is unclear. We assessed glomerulosclerosis (GS) and tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF) in 3- and 6-mo-old male and female SS/JrHsdMcwi, BN/NHsd/Mcwi [Brown-Norway (BN)], and consomic SS-Chr 1BN/Mcwi (SS.BN1) rats, in which chromosome 1 from the BN rat was introgressed into the genome of the SS/JrHsdMcwi rat. Rats were fed a 0.4% NaCl diet. GS (31 ± 3% vs. 7 ± 1%) and TIF (2.3 ± 0.2 vs. 0.5 ± 0.1) were significantly greater in 6-mo-old compared with 3-mo-old SS/JrHsdMcwi rats, and CKD was exacerbated in males. GS was minimal in 6- and 3-mo-old BN (3.9 ± 0.6% vs. 1.2 ± 0.4%) and SS.BN1 (2.4 ± 0.5% vs. 1.0 ± 0.3%) rats, and neither exhibited TIF. In SS/JrHsdMcwi and SS.BN1 rats, mean arterial blood pressure was significantly greater in 6-mo-old compared with 3-mo-old SS/JrHsdMcwi (162 ± 4 vs. 131 ± 2 mmHg) but not SS.BN1 (115 ± 2 vs. 116 ± 1 mmHg) rats. In 6-mo-old SS/JrHsdMcwi rats, blood pressure was significantly greater in females. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that inflammatory pathways were upregulated in isolated medullary thick ascending tubules in 7-wk-old SS/JrHsdMcwi rats, before the development of tubule pathology, compared with SS.BN1 rats. In summary, SS/JrHsdMcwi rats exhibit robust age-related progression of medullary thick ascending limb abnormalities, CKD, and hypertension, and gene(s) on chromosome 1 have a major pathogenic role in such changes. Abstract

Monoallelic pathogenic variants in BICD2 are associated with autosomal dominant Spinal Muscular Atrophy Lower Extremity Predominant 2A and 2B (SMALED2A, SMALED2B). As part of the cellular vesicular transport, complex BICD2 facilitates the flow of constitutive secretory cargoes from the trans‐Golgi network, and its dysfunction results in motor neuron loss. The reported phenotypes among patients with SMALED2A and SMALED2B range from a congenital onset disorder of respiratory insufficiency, arthrogryposis, and proximal or distal limb weakness to an adult‐onset disorder of limb weakness and contractures. We report an infant with congenital respiratory insufficiency requiring mechanical ventilation, congenital diaphragmatic paralysis, decreased lung volume, and single finger camptodactyly. The infant displayed appropriate antigravity limb movements but had radiological, electrophysiological, and histopathological evidence of myopathy. Exome sequencing and long‐read whole‐genome sequencing detected a novel de novo BICD2 variant (NM_001003800.1:c.[1543G>A];[=]). This is predicted to encode p.(Glu515Lys); p.Glu515 is located in the coiled‐coil 2 mutation hotspot. We hypothesize that this novel phenotype of diaphragmatic paralysis without clear appendicular muscle weakness and contractures of large joints is a presentation of BICD2‐related disease.
