We develop a general Ginzburg-Landau theory which describes the effect of a Zeeman field on the superconducting order parameter in triplet superconductors. Starting from Ginzburg-Landau theories that describe fully gapped time-reversal symmetric triplet superconductors, we show that the Zeeman field has dramatic effects on the topological properties of the superconductors. In particular, in the vicinity of a critical chemical potential separating two topologically distinct phases, it is possible to induce a phase transition to a topologically nontrivial phase which supports chiral edge modes. Moreover, for specific directions of the Zeeman field, we obtain nodal superconducting phases with an emerging chiral symmetry, and with Majorana flat bands at the edge. The Ginzburg-Landau theory is microscopically supported by a self-consistent mean-field theory of the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model.

We consider two interacting quantum dots coupled by standard superconductors. We derive an effective Hamiltonian, and show that over a wide parameter range a degenerate ground state can be obtained. An exotique form of Majorana bound states are supported at these degeneracies, and the system can be adiabatically tuned to a limit in which it is equivalent to the one-dimensional wire model of Kitaev. We give the form of a Majorana bound state in this system in the strong interaction limit in the many-particle picture. We also study the Josephson current in this system, and demonstrate that a double slit-like pattern emerges in the presence of an extra magnetic field. This pattern is shown to disappear with increasing interaction strength, which is able to be explained as the current being carried by chargeless Majorana modes., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We show that in a layered metal, the angle dependent, finite frequency, interlayer magnetoresistance is altered due to the presence of a non-zero Berry curvature at the Fermi surface. At zero frequency, we find a conservation law which demands that the `magic angle' condition for interlayer magnetoresistance extrema as a function of magnetic field tilt angle is essentially both field and Berry curvature independent. In the finite frequency case, however, we find that surprisingly large signatures of a finite Berry curvature occur in the periodic orbit resonances. We outline a method whereby the presence and magnitude of the Berry curvature at the Fermi surface can be extracted., Comment: We corrected an error in the original preprint. A term in the equations of motion was overlooked which leads to a cancellation of terms involving the Berry curvature in the magic angle condition. We introduce the concept of spinful many-particle Majorana modes with local odd operator products, thereby preserving their local statistics. We consider a superconductor-double-quantum-dot system where these modes can arise with negligible Zeeman splitting when Coulomb interactions are present. We find a reverse Mott-insulator transition, where the even- and odd-parity bands become degenerate. Above this transition, Majorana operators move the system between the odd-parity ground state, associated with elastic cotunneling, and the even-parity ground state, associated with crossed Andreev reflection. These Majorana modes are described in terms of one, three, and five operator products. The Chern insulator displays a quantum Hall effect with no net magnetic field. Proposed by Haldane over 20 years ago, it laid the foundation for the fields of topological order, unconventional quantum Hall effects, and topological insulators. Despite enormous impact over two decades, Haldane's original vision of a staggered magnetic field within a crystal lattice has been prohibitively difficult to realise. In fact, in the original paper Haldane stresses his idea is probably merely a toy model. I show that buckled lattices with only simple hopping terms, within in-plane magnetic fields, can realise these models, requiring no exotic interactions or experimental parameters. As a concrete example of this very broad, and remarkably simple principle, I consider silicene, a honeycomb lattice with out-of-plane sublattice anisotropy, in an in-plane magnetic field, and show that it is a Chern insulator, even at negligibly small magnetic fields, which is analogous to Haldane's original model., Comment: Final published version

A peculiar feature of the majority of three dimensional topological insulator surface states studied experimentally thus far, namely their particle-hole asymmetry, makes quantum oscillations (Shubnikov de Haas and de Haas van Alphen oscillations) in these materials particularly rich. I show that this peculiarity can be exploited to measure the Chern number, and detect topological phase transitions in topological insulator surface states from the quantum spin Hall phase to the quantum anomalous Hall phase. I consider the behaviour of quantum oscillations in topological insulator thin film surface states in the presence of a topological exciton condensate, or hybridisation between the two surfaces. As a function of Zeeman field, the Chern number and phase transition from a quantum spin Hall to a quantum anomalous Hall phase can be measured using standard techniques. This effect relies necessarily on the particle-hole asymmetry which is ubiquitous in currently know materials that exhibit topological insulator surface states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantum oscillations can be used to determine properties of the Fermi surface of metals by varying the magnitude and orientation of an external magnetic field. Topological insulator surface states are an unusual mix of normal and Dirac fermions. Unlike in graphene and simple metals, Berry's geometric phase in topological insulator surface states is not necessarily quantised. We show that reliably extracting this geometric phase from the phase offset associated with the quantum oscillations is subtle. This is especially so in the presence of a Dirac gap such as that associated with the Zeeman splitting or interlayer tunneling. We develop a semi-classical theory for general mixed normal-Dirac systems in the presence of a gap, and in doing so clarify the role of topology and broken particle-hole symmetry. The competition between Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions away from half filling is studied for the the hole-doped Kitaev-Heisenberg $t$-$J_K$-$J_H$ model on a honeycomb lattice. While the isotropic Heisenberg coupling supports a time-reversal violating d-wave singlet state, we find that the Kitaev interaction favors a time-reversal invariant p-wave superconducting phase, which obeys the rotational symmetries of the microscopic model, and is robust for $J_H\mu_c$., Comment: published version, 4.5 pages, 5 figures

We calculate the dynamical structure factor of the \nu=5/2 non-abelian quantum Hall state in the dipole approximation, valid for large momenta. Due to the fact that both quasi-particles (qps) and quasi-holes (qhs) have an internal Majorana degree of freedom, a qp-qh pair has a fermionic degree of freedom which can be either empty or occupied, and leads to a splitting of the roton mode. Observation of this splitting by means of finite wavelength optical spectroscopy could provide evidence for Majorana modes in the \nu=5/2 quantum Hall state., Comment: 8 pages including Supp. Mat., 3 figures

We demonstrate the topological properties of the band-gap of armchair graphene nanoribbons in a spatially varying staggered sublattice potential. Several general scaling laws are presented to quantify the band gap variation. It is found that all armchair nanoribbons are described by one of three distinct classes depending on their width, one of which is the well known massless Dirac condition, and the other two we call potentially gapless, and gapless-superlattice. We construct an effective theory which faithfully reproduces these results, and makes explicit the nature of the competing masses and overlap integrals across a particular sample. We show that lattice mismatched bilayer graphene can realize robust one-dimensional wires. By considering a single domain wall where the masses of the Dirac electrons change their sign, we establish a general projection principle. This determines how the existence of topological zero-energy domain wall states depends on the direction of the domain wall and locations of the massive Dirac cones inside the bulk Brillouin zone. We generalize this idea for arbitrary patterns of domain walls, showing that the topologically protected states exist only in the presence of an odd number of topological domain walls., Comment: 8 preprint pages, 3 figures
