In the first part of the article, the author describes in detail the life and scientific, research and professional work of Dr. Milan Piskernik, and in the second part is collected a chronology of all his publications and available manuscripts. The research of the flora and vegetation of the Mt. Notranjski Snežnik (1796 m), the highest mountain of Slovenia outside the Alps, contributed also in theperiod after 1993 some floristic novelties worthy of notice. As new for theflora of Slovenia turned out Asperula beckiana and Euphrasia hirtella, which will be full discussed in other place. The finds ofArabis pumila subsp. stellulata, Omalotheca hoppeana, Potentilla brauniana, Sagina saginoides, Saxifraga exarata subsp. moschata and S. sedoides on the Mt. Snežnik are in Slovenia the first known localities discovered outside the Alps. These and others in the article treated taxa (Achillea clavennae var. intercedens f. velebitica, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Campanula cespitosa, Carex pilosa, Crocusvernus subsp. albiflorus, Orobanche reticulata, Pleurospermum austriacum, Potentilla caulescens, Rhamnus pumilus, Saxifraga paniculata, Serratula macrocephala, Streptopus amplexifolius) improve the knowledge of the floristicinventory of this phytogeographically and consequently for the conservation of nature interesting and important territory. The new localities, recorded in the upper region of the Mt. Snežnik (from the upper limit of the "subalpine" beech forest to the very top of the mountain), are situated in the quadrant 0452/2 of the Middle-Europe mapping grid. Floristično-vegetacijske raziskave na ovršju Notranjskega Snežnika (1796 m), najvišjega vrha Slovenije zunaj Alp, so tudi v obdobju po letu 1993 prinesle nekaj omembe vrednih florističnih novosti. Kot novi vrsti slovenske flore sta se izkazali Asperula beckiana in Euphrasia hirtella. Prvič so bile v Slovenijizunaj svojega alpskega areala odkrite vrste Arabis pumila subsp. stellulatu, Omalotheca hoppeana, Potentilla brauniana, Sagina saginoides, Saxifraga exarata subsp. moschata in S. sedoides; doslej naštete in druge v članku obravnavane vrste (Achillea clavennae var. intercedens f. velebitica, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Campanula cespitosa, Carex pilosa, Crocus vernus subsp. albiflorus, Orobanche reticulata, Pleurospermum austriacum, Potentilla caulescens, Rhamnus puntilus, Saxifraga paniculata, Serratula macrocephala, Streptopus amplexifolius) večajo vednost o flornem inventarju tega fitogeografsko in zato tudi naravoohranjevalno zanimivega in pomembnega območja. Vsa nova nahajališča, ki jih navajamo na ovršju Snežnika, leže v kvadrantu srednjeevropskega kartiranja 0452/2.

SOME NEW OR RARE SPECIES IN THE FLORA OF THE JULIAN ALPS (IV). The Author communicates the presence of 5 species in the Julian Alps: Bupleurum longifolium, Festuca pulchella var. angustifolia, Potentilla Arenaria and Pulsatilla alba are new for the flora of the territory: for Androsace Helvetica a second locality is given. The sociological value of these species and their distribution in Slovenija are discussed.

Valantia hispida L. is a circummediterranean species distributed only in areas with arid and hot climate. Despite of wide area of its distribution, the plant is rare with relatively few known localities. For the flora of Croatia the species was discovered as early as in 1975 on the island of Svetac (Sv. Andrija) in the Central Adriatic. In 2002 the species was found on the small island of Sušac and further in 2003 it was also discovered in the archipelago of Vela and Mala Palagruža, the most pelagic of all Croatian islands. During floristic investigations on the Island of Vis in 2004, further localities were discovered. The species was found in extreme termophyllous scree and on rocky habitats near the town of Komiža. On the first locality V. hispida was growing in vegetation of summer deciduous shrubs with Euphorbia dendroides as dominant edificator species and with prevalence of therophytes and geophytes. The second locality was characterised by degraded form of maquis with Rosmarinus officinalis, Erica manipuliflora and Brachypodium retusum as dominant species. Conclusively can be said that the species V. hispida in Croatia is limited only on the most arid and hot part of Croatian coast i.e. on xeromediterranean zone, which encompasses the most remote Eastern Adriatic islands.

Chorological data on the stenoendemic aggregate Waldsteiniana are presented. The Aggregate consists of only two closely related species, Campanula waldsteiniana Schult. and C. tommasiniana C. Koch, clearly separated by their corolla shape, which is quite distinct and unique among the taxa of the family Campanulaceae. The Waldsteinianas most probably evolved in the outer (Adriatic) Dinarids from yet unknown ancestor, considered to be close to both Campanula Isophylla and Heterophylla-groups of the amphi-Adriatic and western Balkan area. A Liburnian-mountainous endemic Campanula tommasiniana is centred in the Mt. Učka plateau (Istria peninsula, Croatia), where it most abundantly grows in the stands of endemic, rock crevice association Campanuletum tommasinianae-justinianae Trinajstić prov., but inhabits as well the rock crevices within the stands of the forest association Seslerio autumnalis-Fagetum s. lat. on the Mediterrarnean-montainous belt at the altitudes up to 1400 m. Campanula waldsteiniana is mainly connected to the diverse limestone-fissure plant communities (i.e. Asplenietum fissi, Potentilletum clusianae, both from the alliance Micromerion croaticae) at the altitudes between 700 and 1650 m in the Velebit, Velika Kapela and Gola Plješivica Mts (Croatia), with several localities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mts Ilica, Osječnica and Ljubična– Vjetrenica). Here we present the first report on the recent discovery of C. waldsteiniana in south-western Slovenia (Mt Snežnik, Liburnian karst), which is the northern-most known habitat of that species. According to some older literature data, C. waldsteniana was also observed in the continental part of the northern Croatia (Ivančica Mt). Unfortunately, recent investigation did not confirm those observations. The ecology, phytosociology and taxonomic position of the Waldsteiniana aggregate are briefly discussed, together with the statutory protection requirements.

Beech forest with fescue (Festuco drymeiae-Fagetum) grows in illimerized and brown illimerized soils in northern Croatia, particularly in hilly and sub-mountainous positions of the Slavonian mountain range. This forest differs fundamentally from beech forests of the alliance Aremonio-Fagion as it shows independence in the floral composition, ecological conditions and physiognomy. The cover with a very small number of Illyrian species makes it subordinate to the Central European alliance Fagion. In hilly positions on slopes towards ditches and on north-facing sides the community is predominantly azonal, whereas in higher positions and on the ribs of lower hills it may be considered zonal. The tree layer, dominated by the beech, frequently contains hornbeam and sessile oak, while the shrub layer is undeveloped or very poor. Festuca drymeia and Carex pilosa prevail in the ground layer, whereas Rubus hirtus sporadically constitutes entire facieses. Of Illyrian species, only Ruscus hypoglossum is more permanently represented, and so are Knautia drymeia and Vicia oroboides with a small cover. Cyclamen purpurascens, Epimedium alpinum, Erythronium dens canis and species of the genus Hellborus occur only in some places. The forest of beech and fescue is a very interesting subject of research ; for this reason the paper also analyses the previously described communities in Croatia (Pelcer in Cestar et al. 1978, 1983, Regula-Bevilacqua 1978, Trinajstić and Franjić 1999, Vukelić and Baričević 2002, 2004, Baričević 2002). The community has been meticulously compared with the related stands in the neighbouring areas in Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Vojvodina (A. O. Horvat 1973, Janković and Mišić 1980, Cimperšek 1988, Zupančič, Žagar and Surina 2000 and others). A detailed description, range, floral composition, and synecological and syntaxonomic characteristics are also given.

So far, the association Castaneo-Fagetum Marinček & Zupančič 1995 was documented only in south and eastern Slovenia and in south Styria. It represents illyric variation of the association Melampyro-Fagetum, but it is warmer and more humid. This association is located exclusively on non-carbonated, acid, moderate deep to deep brown soil. Although physiognomical aspect of beech prevails, sessile oak and chestnut are regularly found either as trees or group of trees. Transformation zone between acidophilic sessile forests to acidophilic beech forests contributes to specific ecology characterized by common appearance of very acidophilic species from the class Vaccinio-Piceetea and the order Quercetalia roboris-petraeae, as well as thermophilic species from the order Quercetalia pubescentis. In the area of north-western Croatia the association Castaneo-Fagetum appears as a special geographic variation with common fir. Physiognomy of these forests formed by common fir and sweet chestnut together with beech and sessile oak is the result of anthropogenic influence. In the layer of ground vegetation, aside from beech species, the most often and abundant is Festuca drymeia, a species that comes in beech and sessile oak forests. Thermophilic and acidophilic elements like Melampyrum pratense, Lathyrus niger, Genista tinctoria are abundant only on localities with less common fir, with favorable light conditions. Preliminary research of acidophilic beech forests in Medvednica shows that some acidophilic beech forests, previously classified in the association Luzulo-Fagetum, have large part of thermophilic elements (especially Castanea sativa and Melampyrum pratense). Therefore, these forests deserve different classification: the association of sweet chestnut and beech (Castaneo-Fagetum).

We have studied the vascular pasture flora at the locality of the family owned agricultural farm which breeds sheep. It is located in Istria (Croatia), in the areas surrounding the small village of Slum (45°25'35''N, 14°0'43''E). The pasture lies at 594 m a.s.l. - 650 m a.s.l. and covers area of 7 ha. Phytosociologically, this pasture belongs to the submediterranean vegetation of dry meadows and rocky pastures (Scorzonero - Chrysopogonetalia). During 2003, a total of 99 taxa (89 species and 10 subspecies) of vascular plants were found, distributed into 79 genera and 30 families. The most dominant families are: Compositae with 16 species and 1 subspecies, followed by Gramineae with 12 species, Labiatae with 8 species and 3 subspecies and Leguminosae with 6 species and 2 subspecies. By the analysis of life forms it has been determined that the most numerous life forms are hemicryptophytes (64.64%), followed by chemaephytes (15.15%). We also established the presence of the endemic species Leucanthemum atratum (Jacq.) DC. subsp. platylepis (Borbás) Heywood and Knautia illyrica Beck, and two taxa which were listed in the Red list of threatened plants of Croatia: Asparagus tenuifolius Lam. and Orchis morio L.

Stupnik is located in the northwest Croatia, 10 km southwest from the city of Zagreb. The total surface of the researched area is 19.2 km2 and it is bordered with the &laquo ; Stara Karlovačka&raquo ; road, railway Zagreb-Rijeka and motorway Zagreb-Karlovac. The area includes villages Gornji Stupnik and Donji Stupnik, as well as smaller parts of the village Kalinovica and Lučko. According to the climate classification by Koppen, researched area belongs to the temperate C climate (warm-temperate rainy climate). The area has been floristically researched in the period of two years (2002 and 2003) during vegetational seasons. According to these researches 454 taxa of higher plants from 81 families were found. The most abundant families are Asteraceae s.l. (11.5%), Poaceae (8.4%), Fabaceae (5.9%), Lamiaceae (5.7%) and Rosaceae (4.6%). In the life form spectrum hemicriptophyta are dominant (49%), therophyta are also numerous (24%), followed by phanerophyta (10.8%), geophyta (10.3%) and several chamaephyta (3.4%) and hydrophyta (2.5%). Phytogeographical analysis showed that Euroasiatic element is predominant, with 33.4% of taxa, widespread plants encompasses 27.1% taxa, Europaean plants 11.7%, Southeuropaean plants 9.8% and Cicrumholartic plants 7.4%. Middleeuropaean plants are represented with 3.7% of taxa, Easteuropaean-pontic plants with 0.9%, Atlantic with 0.4% and Illyrian-Balcan plants with 0.2% of taxa. Cultivated and adventive plants encompass 3.4% of taxa. Although there are no endemic taxa in the researched area, the floristical diversity is great, mostly because of its habitat diversity and human influence.
