This article is a thorough study of a scarce sub-type of the C. L. CAESARES denarii, RIC (2nd edition) Augustus 208, currently known from 26 specimens. These coins bear the well-known Augustan types and legends, but metallurgical analyses as well as observations on typological details make it clear that we are in fact dealing with an unsigned restoration issue, for which an attribution to the reign of Hadrian is proposed.

This article provides a detailed iconographic analysis of the reverse of the denarii signed by P. Crassus and struck at the mint of Rome in 55 BC. This coin image has been causing a lot of controversy in scholarship since the start of the 18th century. According to the new interpretation provided here, it shows a female warrior probably wearing an animal skin headdress, with her arms and armour, standing in front of her horse. This coin type may be interpreted in the light of passages in the ancient literary sources (especially in Plutarch and Appianus) exceptionally mentioning women among the troops of the Albani and Iberi in a battle fought by the army of Pompey the Great in the Caucasus region. Some of these female warriors were captured and paraded in Rome in Pompey’s triumph of 61 BC. Since the denarii do not show a double axe or Amazon shield among the woman’s arms, they do not seem to depict an Amazon from classical mythology.

This article presents and discusses two letters of recommendation by Christian Gottlob Heyne: one written to Franz de Paula Neumann in Viennaon behalf of Georg Zoëga, and another one written to a professor in Leipzig, presumably to Ernst Platner, on behalf of Christian Ramus and Niels Schow.

This is the first in-depth analysis of the various printings of Joseph Eckhel’s eight-volume Doctrina numorum veterum: the first Vienna edition (1792–1798), the second Vienna edition (published in the first half of the nineteenth century), and a nineteenth-century edition bearing a Leipzig imprint. Eckhel’s Elementa rei numariae veterum, a little-known related book first published in 1841, provides complementary evidence for the printing history of the latter two editions. The vicissitudes of the Doctrina’s publication are reconstructed on the basis of unpublished and published letters, as well as other contemporary documents.

The article presents a die study and interpretation of the Hadrianic sestertius type RIC II.3, nos 104-5.

The article provides a detailed analysis of Joseph Eckhel's contactswith the Dutch collector and dealer in coins and rare books, Pieter van Damme. It also containsthe first ever bibliographic analysis of the infamous "Recueil des medailles des Rois, du Cabinet de Mr. P. van Damme", of which he purportedly had only twelve copies produced. While van Damme claimed this book to be a publication of his collection of coins of Greek (mostly Hellenistic) kings, it is in fact aconcoction mostly of plates from a never-published book on the subject by the Dutch classicist Sigebert Havercamp. The contribution also contains various appendices on van Damme’s portrait, his memberships in learned societies, and his (few) real publications.

This article provides the first ever study of thecomplex genesis of Eckhel's Doctrina numorum veterum. A key aspect of the contribution is the presentation of rediscovered numismatic papers of the Danish archaeologist Georg Zoëga at the Royal Library in Copenhagen: these manuscripts could be identified as the notes that Zoëga took while studying numismatics in Vienna with Eckhel in 1782. Since we know that Zoëga directly copied Eckhel’s manuscripts, they represent a most precious (because precisely dated) source for the progress Eckhel had made with his work up to 1782. Further aspects of the contribution concern Eckhel’s scholarly practice: an analysis of Eckhel’s various notebooks and preparatory manuscripts for the Doctrina (and other works) kept in Vienna allows for a look over the author’s shoulder while he was penning his works. One of the results of this study is that only very few quires of the final manuscript from which the Doctrina was typeset are preserved, and that the vast majority of the Doctrina-related manuscripts that have come down to us belong to earlier phases of the work’s redaction. In one of these phases, the section on Greek coins was headlined Geographia numaria – a title that does not appear in the Doctrina.

This is the concluding essay of a major collected volume on the life and work of the Austrian numismatist Joseph Eckhel (1737-1798), often referred to as the 'father of ancient numismatics'. Which aspects of Joseph Eckhel’s legacy qualify as a contribution to numismatic method? Dieser Beitrag analysiert und kontextualisiert eine zwar bereits 1913 belegte, jedoch in den Standardzitierwerken bis heute nicht verzeichnete Variante eines Denartyps des Augustus aus einer westlichen Münzstätte. Die drei bekannten Exemplare zeigen auf der Rückseite ein Standbild des jugendlichen nackten Mars mit vexillum und parazonium. Im Unterschied zu den bisher diskutierten Stücken des Typs (RIC I2 Augustus 153) ist auf den hier untersuchten Münzen das letzte Wort der vierzeiligen Reverslegende ausgeschrieben, was die Gesamtrekonstruktion der Münzinschrift ermöglicht: VOT(um) P(ublice) SVSC(eptum) PRO SAL(ute) ET RED(itu) I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) SACRVM. Diese Münzen stehen im Avers-Stempelverbund mit Denaren desselben Grundtyps, deren Reversinschrift aber auf SACR endet, weshalb ihr Wortlaut bisher unterschiedlich ergänzt wurde. Die neue Evidenz gibt Anlaß zu einer Neubewertung des historischen und numismatischen Kontexts der gesamten Münzgruppe. Die Reverslegende dieser Stücke kommemoriert ein bei Cassius Dio (54, 19, 7) erwähntes Gelübde, das anläßlich des Aufbruchs des Princeps in den Westen unmittelbar nach der Niederlage des Lollius 16 v. Chr. in Rom abgelegt und ebendort 13 v. Chr. durch die Veranstaltung von Votivspielen für Iuppiter Optimus Maximus eingelöst wurde (CIL VI 386). Die auf den westlichen Münzen gezeigte Marsstatue weist große Ähnlichkeiten zu jenem Standbild des Gottes auf, das 16 v. Chr. auf stadtrömischen Denaren des Münzmeisters L. Mescinius Rufus erscheint (RIC I2 Augustus 351–353, 356); dort steht es auf einer Basis, deren Inschrift dasselbe Gelübde dokumentiert: SPQR V(otum) P(ublice) S(usceptum) PR(o) S(alute) ET / RED(itu) AVG(usti). Das städtische Münzbild stellt offenbar eine Statue des Kriegsgottes dar, die anläßlich des Auszuges des Augustus nach der clades Lolliana im Zusammenhang mit der Ablegung des Gelübdes in Rom errichtet wurde. Die Wahl des Mars erklärt sich mit der allgemeinen Erwartung, daß der Kaiser einen Rachefeldzug gegen die Germanen führen würde., Chiron. In diesem Beitrag wird die Entwicklung des schriftlichen Elements im römischen numismatischen Material ‒ vor allem in der Reichsprägung, aber auch auf Provinzialmünzen ‒ diachron von Grund auf neu untersucht. Es ergibt sich, daß die auf Münzen stehende Textmenge in der Übergangsphase zwischen Republik und Kaiserzeit und dann vor allem unter Augustus stark anstieg, und daß zum Teil der Text das Bild als hauptsächliches Gestaltungselement der Münzen ablöste, häufig in Zeilenform; parallel dazu wuchs natürlich auch die Bedeutung der Münzlegenden in kommunikationstechnischer Hinsicht. Das Vorbild des ersten Princeps blieb diesbezüglich für die Kaiserzeit vielfach verbindlich. Unter Augustus kam es vor allem in der Münzstätte Rom auch wiederholt zur Abbildung epigraphischer Monumente auf Münzen, was ein absolutes Novum darstellte. Diese Entwicklungen spiegeln den tiefgreifenden Wandel der epigraphischen Kultur der Römer in den Jahrzehnten um die Zeitenwende, den Géza Alföldy prägnant als «die Geburt der imperialen Epigraphik» angesprochen hat., Chiron. Obituary of the eminent German numismatist Peter Robert Franke (1926-2018).

In this article, early modern aurei featuring portraits of the deified Julius Caesar and Octavian, identified by the legends DIVOS IVLIVS and DIVI FILIVS respectively, are published. These coins were struck from a die today kept in the Louvre, compareA. Suspène and M. Blet-Lemarquand, Un coin augustéen d’époque moderne conservé au Louvre, Bulletin de la Société Française de Numismatique 71/2, 2016, pp. 34–40. The pieces probably date from the 17th century and fooled collectors and scholars well into the 20th century. Additionally, further related forgeries in silver and bronze are discussed.

This paper presents three previously unpublished Roman bronze coins belonging to the group of the so-called “coins of the mines” (nummi metallorum): Hadrianic semisses bearing the reverse legend AELIANA PINCENSIA, one of which is pierced, with a hook still attached. The three coins surfaced in the coin trade and are currently kept in the National Museum of Veliko Gradište. Despite the fact that the original find context of the coins remains unknown, the circumstances surrounding their acquisition by the museum suggest that they originate from the wider territory of the Roman mining district referenced on their reverses.

This paper presents 18 semisses of Hadrian that surfaced as a group in 2001; they were presumably found together. Apart from 16 mostly die-linked specimens from the imperial ʻmainstream’ coinage with SC, the assemblage comprises one semis of the mines (AELIANA PINCENSIA) as well as one ʻprovincial’ coin featuring the head of Jupiter Ammon on the reverse. Ten of the imperial coins from the same die-pair (rev. prize table) belong to a variety unattested in the reference works.

Publication of an early modern imitation of an aureus with the portrait and legend ofemperor Caligula on the obverse andPegasus on the reverse. The type seems to have been created in the 17th or at the beginning of the 18th century. A bronze coin of the same type was published in 1739 by the child prodigy Jean-Philippe Baratier (1721‒1740), in an article entitled'Historische Betrachtung über eine besondere Müntze des Käysers C. Caligulae'.

The paper provides an new treatment of theenigmatic use of the term “old Ptolemaic coinage” (παλαιὸν Πτολεμαϊκὸν νόμισμα) in some papyrus documents mentioning monetary transactions from 3rd-c. AD Roman Egypt.

A paper dealing with several technical aspects of Roman coin production, complementing the article on "System and Product in Roman Mints from the Late Republic to the High Principate: Some Current Problems", Revue Belge de Numismatique 158, 2012, pp. 85‒122.

Publication of an early modern aureus of the type RIC Nerva 32; the piece is kept at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Florence. Additionally, the paper provides a discussion of an early modern coin type in the name of Sertorius, which has been produced by overstriking an ancient Roman victoriatus.
