Gunshot wound analysis is an important part of medicolegal practice, in both autopsies and examinations of living persons. Well-established and studied simulants exist that exhibit both physical and biomechanical properties of soft-tissues and bones. Current research literature on ballistic wounds focuses on the biomechanical properties of skin simulants. In our extensive experimental study, we tested numerous synthetic and natural materials, regarding their macromorphological bullet impact characteristics, and compared these data with those from real bullet injuries gathered from medicolegal practice. Over thirty varieties of potential skin simulants were shot perpendicularly, and at 45°, at a distance of 10 m and 0.3 m, using full metal jacket (FMJ) projectiles (9 × 19 mm Luger). Simulants included ballistic gelatine at various concentrations, dental silicones with several degrees of hardness, alginates, latex, chamois leather, suture trainers for medical training purposes and various material compound models. In addition to complying to the general requirements for a synthetic simulant, results obtained from dental silicones shore hardness 70 (backed with 20 % by mass gelatine), were especially highly comparable to gunshot entry wounds in skin from real cases. Based on these results, particularly focusing on the macroscopically detectable criteria, we can strongly recommend dental silicone shore hardness 70 as a skin simulant for wound ballistics examinations. Ballistic soap blocks are used in wound ballistics to assess the potential damage of the ammunition employed, allowing observation of the energy transfer occurred along the wound channel. The density and viscosity of ballistic soap (also called tissue simulant) simulate, to a good degree of approximation, the effect resulting from the interaction of penetrating bullets with living human soft tissue. Ballistic soap has a "plastic reaction" to bullet penetration, and therefore, unlike ballistic gelatin, the expansion of temporary cavity remains imprinted in the tissue simulant. When the soap blocks are sectioned or divided with nondestructive instrumental techniques (e.g., Compton's scattering tomography), it's possible, therefore, to observe the temporary cavity determined by the penetration of the bullet. This study provides insight into the severity of injuries originated from two different types of bullets of the same caliber by employing ballistic soap as a tissue simulant. In addition, it provides guidance to forensic practitioners on the proper use of ballistic soap for simulating gunshot wounds. The semi-computational approach employed, based on the results obtained from the firing tests, allowed the authors to understand that there is likely a threshold value of projectile energy density, close to 1 J/mm2, beyond which its penetration into the ballistic soap ceases. An original simplified constitutive model is proposed to simulate the effects of ballistic impacts on blocks of synthetic muscle simulant based on mineral oil and styrene ethylene-butylene styrene polymers (SEBS) as a convenient substitute for Fackler ballistic gelatin. The model is based on a quasi-static elastic-plastic model associated with hydrodynamic properties regulated by a polynomial equation of state. The paper illustrates the development and experimental validation of the model to simulate 9x21mm full metal jacket (FMJ) round-nose, 7.62x39 mm FMJ and 5.56x45 mm NATO bullets penetrating 145x145x400 mm gel blocks. All material parameters are provided to be implemented in built-in LS-Dyna keywords. The validation confirms the effectiveness of the model and suggests possible further developments. The work also confirms the tested synthetic gel as a valid and convenient substitute for Fackler 10% ballistic gelatin at 4 �C

The wounding potential of a projectile depends on its kinetic energy. The aim of the study was to investigate the deceleration of non-deforming full metal jacket handgun bullets (FMJ) in gelatine blocks of increasing length. The temporary cavity (TC) was visualized using a SA-X2 Photron camera. 126 test shots in 9 mm nominal calibre were fired under strict temperature control conditions (4°C) at small gelatine blocks ranging from 2 to 12 cm in length. The deposited energy was calculated based on the loss of bullet velocity through high-speed video analysis. The length of the TC was measured, when the TC reached its maximum height. The volume of the TC was approximated by a cylinder. Regression analysis showed a linear correlation between the length of the bullet path and the energy transfer. The constant deceleration of the FMJ bullets in gelatine up to 12 cm bullet path was confirmed across various brands and velocity ranges (270–450 m/s). Higher impact velocities correlated with increased loss of energy in the target medium. The shape of the bullet tip influenced the characteristic of deceleration. The volume of the tubular temporary cavity, derived from high-speed video records, was found to be proportional to the energy transferred. There was made the analysis of wound ballistics of modern expansive bullets in comparison with shell bullets on 25 blocks of ballistic plasticine (ROMA PLASTILINA No. 1, Ballistic Testing Backing Material), made in the USA, in which one shot from an AKS-74 automatic firearm and carbine ZBROYAR Z-10 with an optical sight was fired. The bullet speed was the highest in 5.45x39 caliber cartridge with a V-max bullet. – 1185 m/s, low in the bullet caliber cartridge .308 Win with a bullet SP, – 664 m/s. The difference is significant at the level of significance α=0.05. In terms of the size of the entrance hole, the largest is from the bullet of cartridge .308 Win with a bullet SP – 10.0 cm, the smallest - from the bullet "PS" with a steel core 5.45x39 mm, cartridge sample of the year 1974 (7H6) – 1.2 cm. The difference is significant at the level of significance α=0.05. In the expansive bullet of type "V-Max" of shortgun cartridge of caliber 5.45x39 mm, the size of the entrance hole was 9.1 cm, with asterial shape having radial gaps and turned edges of ballistic plasticine on the outside. All cartridges with expansive bullets did not have an exit hole after the shot. The dimensions of the formed residual cavity were the largest after firing with .308 Win caliber cartridge with a bullet SP – 25.0x5.0 cm., the smallest – bullet of a military caliber cartridge of 5.45x39 mm (7H6) – 6.0x4.0 cm. The difference is significant at significance level α=0.05. The shape and character of the residual cavity in ballistic plasticine was significant for all expansive bullets, in contrast to the bullet of a military cartridge 5.45x39 mm (7H6), where no such changes are detected. The considerable signs of expansion properties and deformation of the bullet in the form of a "flower of death" were identified in the bullet of caliber cartridge .308 Win with a bullet SP, other bullets with expansive properties showed significant fragmentation, with the location of fragments both in the residual cavity and outside its borders at different distances. Expansive bullets differ significantly at the level of significance α=0.05. The low flight speed of bullets (m/s) of .308 Win caliber cartridges with bullets BTHP and SP is due to their structure, weight, and caliber. Bullet of type V-max with cartridge 5.45x39 mm has the highest speed – 1185 m/s, and due to its design has significant expansive properties. Common to expansive bullets is a entrance hole, the blind nature of the lesion with the presence of a large residual cavity, which is due to kinetic energy return 114.37 E, J/mm2 inside the object of lesion. Fragmentation of expansion bullets occurs inside an object with fragments located at different distances. A .308 Win caliber cartridge with SP bullet causes deformation of s bullet by the type of "death flower" causing significant damage.

Firearm injuries are a preventable epidemic in the USA. Extremities are commonly affected in gunshot injuries. Such injuries may be complex with concomitant osseous, soft tissue, and neurovascular components. The maximum wounding potential of a projectile is determined by its kinetic energy and the proportion of the kinetic energy that is transmitted to the target. Accurate assessment of ballistic injuries is dependent on utilizing the principles of wound ballistics, accurate bullet count, and ballistic trajectory analysis. The goals of this article are to review wound ballistics and the imaging evaluation of extremity civilian firearm injuries in the adult population, with emphasis on ballistic trajectory analysis, specific ballistic fracture patterns, and diffuse, secondary soft tissue ballistic injuries. Violence related injuries and deaths mostly caused by firearms are a major problem throughout the world. Understanding the factors that control the extent of hard-soft tissue wound patterns using computer imaging techniques, numerical methods, and machine learning algorithms may help physicians to diagnose and treat those injuries more properly. Here, we investigate the use of computational results coupled with the pattern recognition algorithms to develop an approach for forensic applications. Initially, computer tomography (CT) images of the patient whose leg was shot by a 9 × 19 parabellum bullet are used to construct the FE models of that patient's femoral bone and the surrounding soft tissues. Then, Hounsfield units-based material properties are assigned to elements of the bone. To simulate the full range of loading conditions encountered in ballistic events, a constitutive model that captures the strain-rate dependent response is implemented. The entrance pathway vector of the bullet is directed in accordance with the patient's wound and the simulations are deployed for the cases having various inlet velocities such as 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 m/s. Once the FE results for each case are obtained, they are processed with supervised machine learning algorithms to classify the wound and inlet velocity correspondence. The results demonstrate that they can be diagnosed with a percent accuracy of 97.3, 97.5, and 98.3 for the decision tree (DT), k -nearest neighbors (kNN) and support vector machine (SVM) classifier, respectively. Objective ‒ to develop recommendations for optimization of primary surgical treatment of gunshot penetrating craniocerebral wounds on the basis of theoretical and applied study of one of the sections of wound ballistics ‒ biophysical mechanisms of wound canal formation, concomitant impenetrable wounds and intracranial injuries. Materials and methods. The medical histories of 155 wounded who received a non-pe- netrating craniocerebral injury during the hostilities in the East of Ukraine in 2014‒2020 were studied. All of the wounded were males between 18 and 60 years old (mean age ‒ 35.1 years). To study the biophysical features of the formation of different types of wound canals at a given non-lethal kinetic energy transferred to the head tissues, the type of the wounding projectile, the flight trajectory, the nature of gunshot injuries to the soft tissues of the cranial vault and skull fractures and intracranial injuries were determined according to the data of clinical stu- dies and computed tomography and compared with the results of theoretical studies using the laws of wound ballistics. Results. There were 11 (7.1 %) bullet (only tangential) wounds, and 144 (92.9 %) shrapnel. The formation of wound channels depends on the type of the wounding projectile and its kinetic energy. Non-penetrating firearms bullet and shrapnel tangential craniocerebral wounds are caused by the destructive effect of injuring shells on the tissues, which at the moment of collision with the head have both destructive kinetic energy (>80 J) and less than destructive kinetic energy. Introduction. Modern military conflicts make many challenges for military surgeons associated with the use of new types of weapons – hollow point bullets. The solution to this problem, firstly, depends on studying the characteristics of the terminal ballistics of such ammunition and comparing the data obtained with the characteristics of traditional weapon. The aim of the work is to conduct experimental modeling of the wound canal and residual wound cavity, which is formed due to plastic deformation from hollow point and non-hollow point bullets. Materials and methods. The studies were carried out on 40 blocks of ballistic plasticine, in each of which one shot was fired from an AKS-74 assault rifle and a ZBROYAR Z-10 carbine. Depending on the type of ammunition, the blocks of ballistic plasticine were divided into 4 groups: Group 1 – 10 blocks into which shots were made with 5.45 mm non-hollow point military cartridges with "PS" bullets with a steel core "7N6"; Group 2 (10 blocks) – 5.45x39 mm cartridges with "V-Max" hollow point bullets; Group 3 (10 blocks) – with cartridges 7.62x39 mm; Group 4 (10 blocks) – cartridges 7.62x39 mm with hollow point bullets of the "SP" type. Results and discussion. Only for a 5.45 mm military cartridge with "PS" bullets, both inlet and outlet bullet holes were detected in all 10 observations. When using non-hollow point bullets, the outer area of ​​the bullet inlet correlates with the caliber of the projectile (1.6 times larger when using 7.62 mm bullets). For hollow point bullets, the caliber of the projectile does not significantly affect the area of ​​the inlet (P < 0.05). The expansive properties of the bullet significantly increase the area of ​​the bullet hole by 14.87-31.2 times compared to non-hollow point ammunition. Increasing the caliber of the non-hollow point bullet leads to a significant increase in the area of ​​the sagittal section of the residual wound cavity in 1.59-2.03 times; whereas the expansive properties of the bullet do not significantly affect either the perimeter or the area of ​​the sagittal section of the residual wound cavity. For non-hollow point bullets, the volume of the residual wound cavity is more correlated with the caliber of the bullet (increases by 3.36 times); whereas for an hollow point bullet, its caliber has a smaller effect on the volume of the residual cavity (increases by 1.37 times). The expansive properties of the bullet affect the volume of the residual wound cavity in two ways: for 5.45 mm bullets the residual wound cavity increases 1.49 times, for 7.62 mm bullets it decreases 1.65 times. The use of hollow point bullets of 7.62 mm leads to greater collateral damage (zone of secondary necrosis, molecular shock) due to the scattering of the kinetic energy of the bullet to the elastic deformation of near-woundary tissues compared to non-hollow point analogues. The use of 5.45 mm expansive bullets leads to the formation of a larger volume of irreversible damage due to plastic deformation compared to non-hollow point analogues. Conclusions. The resulting model of plastic deformation of soft tissues, depending on the type of modern small arms, showed the dependence of the spatial configuration of the inlet bullet hole, residual wound cavity and deformation and fragmentation of the bullet on the caliber of the cartridge and its expansive properties.

Current methods used in terminal ballistics to determine the volume of temporary cavities created by projectiles in soft tissue simulants (such as ballistic soap) usually involve silicone-casting to obtain the cavity moulds. However, these methods have important drawbacks including their little sensitivity and precision, besides the fact that they are destructive. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) might not only overcome those limitations but also offer useful tools for digitally reporting the scientific results. This work accomplished the 3D digital reconstruction of the cavities created by different projectiles in ballistic soap blocks. This way, the total volume of the cavities, the projectile penetration depths, and other measurements were determined, rendering better capabilities when compared to the current silicone method. All these features were achieved through the CT analysis and 3D Slicer imaging software. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the method can preserve the evidence by digitally obtaining, signing, and storing the infographic videos displaying the 3D-reconstructed cavities. Backspatter is biological material that is ejected from the entry wound against the line of fire. This phenomenon was also observed in wound ballistic simulations using so called "reference cubes" (12 cm edge length, 10% gelatin, 4 °C, paint pad beneath the cover). High-speed video records from 102 experimental shots to these target models using full metal jacketed bullets in the calibers.32 auto,.38 special, 9 mm Luger and.357 Magnum were analyzed for chronology, morphological appearance and velocity of fluid ejection. Generally, a short tail splashing of surface material occurred when the bullet was penetrating the target. In 51 shots from distance (≥ 5 cm), regardless of caliber and shot range, a linear jet of fluid started in connection with the first collapse of the temporary cavity. The initial velocity of the jet was measured between 6 and 45 m/s. The jet was streaming on for about 60 to 100 ms with a stochastic deviation of ± 13° to the horizontal. Close range and contact shots showed earlier and faster (up to 330 m/s) backspatter depending on the cartridge and the gap between muzzle and target. Gaseous aerosol-like spray and cone-like spatter indicated an increasing influence of muzzle gases with decreasing shot range. Physical models are required to generate the underlying algorithms that populate computer simulations of the effects of explosive fragmenting devices. These models and simulations are used for understanding weapon performance, designing buildings and optimising personal protective equipment. Previous experimental work has investigated the performance of skin and muscle when subjected to fragmentation threats, but limited evidence exists for the performance of bone when impacted by fragments. In the current work, ballistic testing was conducted using two types of internationally recognised steel fragment simulating projectiles (FSPs): (i) 5.5 mm diameter (0.68 g) ball bearing (BBs) and (ii) 1.10 g chisel nosed (CN). These projectiles were fired at isolated swine ribs at impact velocities between 99 and 1265 m/s. Impact events were recorded using a high-speed camera. Selected specimens were analysed post-impact with plain x-radiographs and micro-CT scanning to determine damage to the bone architecture. Bones were perforated with a kinetic energy density (KED) as low as 0.14 J/mm2. Energy transfer to the bone was greater for the CN FSPs, resulting in increased bone damage and the production of secondary bone fragments. The manner in which the bones failed with faster velocity impacts (> 551 m/s; KED > 6.44 J/mm2) was analogous to the behaviour of a brittle material. Slower velocity impacts (< 323 m/s; KED < 1.49 J/mm2) showed a transition in failure mode with the bone displaying the properties of an elastic, plastic and brittle material at various points during the impact. Shot range, the muzzle-target distance, is a crucial parameter for forensic reconstruction of deaths by firearms. In a large number of cases, especially suicides, the forensic pathologist is confronted with contact or near-contact shots, where muzzle gases play an additional role. This study was conducted to systematically investigate the influence of muzzle gases on the temporary cavity (TC). A total of 72 shots were fired using full metal-jacketed bullets in four forensically relevant calibres from 10-, 5-, 3-, 2- and 1-cm distance and in close contact. Target model was the so-called reference cube (10% gelatine at 4 °C) with 12-cm edge length. The TC was recorded using high-speed video (HSV). Cross-sectional analysis was performed by cutting the blocks to 1-cm slices, which were evaluated by applying the polygon method. The TC of shots from 10 and 5 cm distance had a tubular form. This aspect changed depending on the cartridge with decreasing distance (≤ 3 cm) into a pear-like form, which was typical for contact shots. The cumulated heights of the TC increased with decreasing distance below 3 cm. Contact shots approximately doubled the extension of the TC compared with exclusive energy transfer. Whereas HSV documented an increasingly asymmetric profile with ballooning at the entry side, cross-sectional analysis of cracks in gelatine resulted in convex graphs with only slight asymmetry for contact shots. Additional damage in gelatine was detected for 3-cm distance or less in calibre.357 Magnum and ≤ 2 cm for.32 auto,.38 special and 9mm Luger. Overmatching occurs when body armour that has been designed to resist perforation by a specified projectile is perforated by a greater threat. This may result in wounding to the body armour wearer. In this work, overmatching of two types of police body armour was studied using two types of ammunition. The use of a 250-mm-long gelatine block to represent the depth of the human torso combined with armour panels mounted on the anterior and posterior of the block allowed for a more realistic simulation to be completed. There was some evidence to suggest that overmatching events could lead to increased levels of damage during a survivable incident compared with no body armour being present. Since decades, 10% gelatine is used to visualize and estimate the energy transfer of projectiles. The study performed investigates the correlation of the temporary cavity (TC) recorded by high-speed video (HSV) and the cracks in gelatine slices. A total of 36 shots were performed from distance using form-stable bullets (FMJ), 12 using deforming bullets (HP) in the calibres.32 auto,.38 special and 9 mm Luger. The target models were prepared according to Fackler's standard as 10% gelatine cubes with 12 cm edge length doped with a paint pad beneath the front cover ("reference cube"). Scaled images of the TC were recorded with 40.000 fps. The cubes were cut into 1-cm-thick gelatine cross sections, which were scanned. The evaluation of the destruction (cracks) was performed by the mean of image analysis measuring the longest crack, the wound profile according to Fackler and applying the polygon method. The height of the TC was measured each cm along the bullet path. The energy deposited ranged between 54 and 269 J. FMJ caused tubular, HP provoked pear-like TC. The tubular aspect was consistent with the quasi-constant deceleration of FMJ; however, the pear-like TC did not metrically represent the deceleration of HP. The profiles of destruction parameters were convex for both projectile types and did not match the profile of bullet deceleration. The maximum of TC stretching observed in HSV did not coincide with maximum gelatine destruction (crack lengths). The total energy transfer correlated with all considered destruction parameters in their sum; however, the cross-sectional parameters did not reflect the energy transfer per centimetre bullet path. The sum of the TC's heights correlated with the energy deposited, but differently for FMJ and HP. Obviously, the 12-cm reference cube reflects the energy transfer by a bullet as a whole. Semi-jacketed lead-cored or copper-based homogenous rifle bullets are commonly used for hunting big game. Ever since their introduction in the 1990's, copper-based bullets have not been widely accepted by hunters due to limited supply, higher expense, and the perception that they exhibit inferior killing efficiency and correspondingly higher wounding rates. Here, we present data showing that animal flight distances for roe deer, red deer, brown bear, and moose dispatched with lead- or copper-based hunting bullets did not significantly differ from an animal welfare standardized animal flight distance based on body mass. Lead-cored bullets typical fragment on impact, whereas copper-based bullets retain more mass and expand more than their leaden counterparts. Our data demonstrate that the relative killing efficiency of lead and copper bullets is similar in terms of animal flight distance after fatal shots. The wound ballistics focus on the treatment methods of gunshot injuries by developing on the personal ballistic protection equipment and increasing the effectiveness of ammunition. The scientific studies of Dr. Theodor Kocher are the initial origin of the modern wound ballistics, and also he formed the basis for the international the international war law with his studies. The modern wound ballistics is a common field of study of law, ballistics, and medicine. Because of this interdisciplinary structure, the science of wound ballistics works together with working groups which constitutes of various scientific field experts and specialized institutes. In this study, three basic mechanisms of gunshot wounds are emphasized; Penetration, Temporary Cavity (Blast Effect) and Fragmentation. Penetration is the first and basic effect of bullet and shrapnel on the tissues. A projectile must be hit by a velocity that can exceed the elasticity limit of the tissue to penetrate the tissue. This impact velocity is called "Threshold Velocity". In order for the target to be incapacitation, the projectile must penetrate the tissue and open the cavity at least 30 cm in length. The sum of the threshold velocities of each of the tissue is a "Critical Velocity". To calculate the critical velocity, the threshold velocities of each tissue should be calculated separately on the projectile and tissue that is along the cavity. The second important mechanism of gunshot injury is the Temporal Cavity resulting from the Blast effect. The amount of kinetic energy that a projectile transfers to tissues along the cavity determines the scale of the blast effect. Blast effect constitutes the main difference between the high kinetic energy rifle bullet and handgun bullet injuries. This difference is critical in the treatment of gunshot wounds and the design of ballistic protective equipment. The third firearm injury mechanism covered in this study is Fragmentation. The severity of the injury increases due to the fragmentation of the projectile outside the tissue or within the tissue. The velocity of a projectile is of crucial importance to calculate its kinetic energy. The study was performed to investigate if a measurement of the velocity profile of a bullet in gelatine was feasible using high-speed video. More than 50 records captured with a SA-X2 Photron camera at 40,000 fps (40k) and 10 μs exposure time were analysed frame by frame. A measurement accuracy of one pixel could be realised. Records of free flying bullets with known velocity served as a control. In further experimental shots from distance the "12 cm reference cube" was used as target model. 18 full metal jacketed bullets and 20 deforming bullets in forensically relevant calibres were fired. In addition 11 expanding bullets were studied with a close-up setting of the camera and 81,000 fps (81k) at 2.5 μs exposure time. A quasi-constant deceleration of the FMJ bullets in gelatine with a relative loss of velocity of 8.4% (.32 auto) and 13.2% (9 mm Luger) was observed. Expanding bullets showed a much higher deceleration and a relative loss of about 56% for the copper hollow point bullet and 73% for the .32 auto Gold Dot. The targeted analysis of the .32 auto Gold Dot based on 81k videos revealed an abrupt drop of the bullet velocity within the first 75 μs, the time needed for full expansion. The deformation of the Action-4 (9 mm Luger) was completely achieved within the first 2 cm of gelatine. After the deformation of the bullet the final deceleration was approximately constant. This could be demonstrated successfully by separating the deformation process experimentally from the final deceleration of the deformed bullet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of a crime scene, it became necessary to examine whether a direct shot to the head with calibre.223 Rem. could happen without creating an exit wound. A simplified head model consisting of a bone-sphere filled with gelatine was compared with a more realistic model considering the inner bone structure of the human skull. It turned out that both models show significantly different behaviour. While the bullet normally penetrates the simplified model and causes an exit defect, it was found that bullet fragmentation can happen in the more realistic model due to grazing along inner bones. Synthetic models, also called "surrogates", are commonly used in wound ballistics in order to simulate human tissues. Despite several surrogates are worldwide accepted and used; some of them have not been yet fully validated and their limits for forensic reconstructions have not been deeply investigated yet. In this work we present a homicide/suicide case involving three gunshots to the head with bullets retained in the skull or beneath the scalp. Reconstruction of these cases was performed preparing three individual synthetic head models based on post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) measurements. Ballistic soap, polyurethane plates and 10% ballistic gelatine at 4°C were used as simulants in individually adapted thickness. Ballistic tests were performed using the questioned firearm and ammunition type. The damages on the synthetic models have been compared to the findings in PMCT and autopsy of the victims. Although the results highlighted general similarities in terms of injury characteristics, some of the experimental shots overpenetrated. Furthermore, the bullets recovered in the synthetic models did not show the same quality of deformations as the questioned bullets. This lack of bullet deformation in the synthetic models might be mainly attributed to the physical difference between real bones and polyurethane surrogate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In wound ballistics, modeling the penetration-cavitation dynamics will set the basis for evaluating the damaging efficiency of projectiles. In our previous study, a motion model to characterize the behavior of rifle bullets has been established and verified in the gelatin penetration. In order to reveal the cavity production analytically, in combination with parameters obtained from the motion model of rifle bullet, cavity dynamics in gelatin was studied and a motion model of temporary cavity in gelatin penetrations of rifle bullets was proposed and verified by comparison with experimental results in terms of maximum cavity wall radius, radial movement along the penetration trajectory and temporary cavity profiles. It can be concluded that calculated results of the cavity motion model agree well with experiment data for penetration of 7.62 mm and 5.56 mm rifle bullets. And the radial movement of cavity can be characterized by the behavior of bullet and the characteristic velocity. Terrorassoziierte Ereignisse oder Amoklagen gehen, wenn Kriegswaffen und Sprengmittel verwendet werden, mit Schuss- und Explosionsverletzungen einher. Da diese Ereignisse und die typischen Verletzungen in Deutschland trotz einer wahrnehmbaren terroristischen Bedrohungslage selten sind, können die Besonderheiten der Behandlung nicht vollumfänglich vorausgesetzt werden. In der Taktik und Strategie der klinischen Versorgung der Verletzten in einer Schadenslage nach Anschlag oder Amok ist bis zum Vorliegen des kompletten Lagebildes von einer vorübergehenden Mangelsituation auszugehen. In der initialen Phase ist damit zu rechnen, dass zunächst Patienten mit nicht beherrschbaren Blutungen an Körperstamm und Körperhöhlen das erstversorgende Krankenhaus erreichen. Diesen ist nur ein Überleben zu ermöglichen, wenn die chirurgische Versorgung auf das Nötigste fokussiert wird („tactical abbreviated surgical care“). Nach der Stabilisierung dieser Verletzten und Vorliegen aller Lageinformationen kann dann die Versorgung und Rekonstruktion der Schuss- und Explosionsverletzungen nach den klinischen Kriterien des Damage Control Surgery (DCS) erfolgen. After contact shots to the head, biological traces can be found inside the barrel of the firearm. Experimental protocols to generate this sort of staining, using 12 cm gelatin cubes containing thin foil bags filled with acrylic paint, human blood, and radiocontrast agent, have been developed. Previous research on shots fired at a distance has shown the underlay sustaining these gelatin cubes has an influence on experimental results. This study was conducted to investigate the role of the sustaining base of the gelatin blocks during contact shots, and its influence on the staining result inside firearm barrels. Eighteen contact shots were performed using 22 LR, 32 ACP (7.65 Browning) and 9 mm Luger semi-automatic pistols. With each pistol, shots were fired onto six gelatin cubes; three placed upon a rigid platform and three upon an elastic underlay. The shots were recorded by a high-speed video camera as they penetrated the gelatin cube. Any staining present inside the firearm barrels after the shots were fired was documented by endoscopy. Cross sections of the gelatin blocks were then compared to the high-speed video. It was found that the nature of the staining inside the barrel was not influenced by the underlay sustaining the target model. In the experiment using a 9 mm Luger, the rigid counterfort provoked a visible distortion of the temporary cavity, but, cross sectional analysis of the gelatin cubes did not reveal a relevant influence of the sustaining underlay on the crack length in the gelatin. This could be explained by a secondary expansion of the temporary cavity left by the projectile as a consequence of subsequent inflow of muzzle gases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The mechanisms of soft tissue injury by bullets are reviewed, in the belief that the current incidence of firearm injuries in many urban areas necessitates an understanding of wound ballistics on the part of trauma surgeons who may not be familiar with the wounding factors involved. Methods: Review of the literature, with technical information obtained from appropriate non-medical texts. Results: Despite numerous publications concerning the treatment of gunshot wounds, relatively few papers contain details on the mechanisms of ballistic trauma, with the main body of evidence derived from previous laboratory and animal studies which have only recently been systematically appraised. These studies have shown that in rifle injuries the main wound tract is surrounded by an area of damaged tissue as a result of the temporary cavitation induced once the bullet becomes destabilized or deformed. On the other hand, the more commonly encountered non-deforming handgun bullets cause damage limited to the bullet's path, mainly as a result of localized crush injury. Conclusions: The bullet's construction and ballistic behavior within tissue determine to what extent the previously overestimated velocity factor may influence wound severity. The damage produced from temporary cavitation depends on the tensile properties of the tissues involved, and in high-energy injuries may lead to progressive muscle tissue necrosis. An extensive literature review, combined with practical experience of forensic testing, has identified several concerns regarding existing studies into skin simulants. These can be summarised as arising due to human skin being a highly complex, multi-layered and anisotropic material whose mechanical properties depend on many factors such as age and gender of the host. In many studies (and papers) essential information is missing. Although there is some parallelism between the studies, the reported energy density at perforation is very inconsistent (a function of the natural variation of skin properties alluded to above) and differs from 0,113 J/mm2 [1] to 0,239 J/mm2 [2]. Which is, in fact, a more than 100 % variation. Such a variation is arguably insufficient to enable accurate replication with a single simulant material. Combined with the missing common agreement about the energy density threshold between countries, laboratories and researchers, this analysis clearly identifies the need for an adjustable and / or customizable skin simulant. To-date, the most often used simulation material for human skin in ballistic testing is 'Chrome crusted cow hide' [3]. However, this is a natural material and, consequently therefore, inevitably physically variable in nature – both inter and intra hide. Ballistic tests on 10 chrome crusted cow hides using 4,5 mm BB's gave v50% ranging from 113 m/s to 200 m/s, an uncontrolled variability for forensic experiments. Hence, the authors examined a skin analogue that could be produced in-house, enabling tailoring to match the desired properties, and with improved consistency. To this end, a thin, 4 mm thick, layer of gelatine (30 – 45 wt%, increasing per 1 wt%) was studied. The ballistic resistance of the gelatine skin analogue was compared to the v50%'s published values in literature, with good agreement found as the gelatine concentration was varied. In comparison to the chrome crusted cow hides this suggests that this relatively simple and accessible approach has potential to provide a more consistent standard. • A thin slice of gelatine can be used as skin simulant for ballistic testing. • The proposed use of gelatine sheets offer a repeatable and adjustable skin simulant. • By adjusting the gelatine weight percentage, the v50% can be tailored as required. • The gelatine skin simulant matches the v50% velocity as reported in the literature. Civilian gunshot injuries from handgun and rifle ammunition vary in severity depending on the anatomic location involved and the different effects from the ballistic properties of the penetrating projectiles. Ballistic factors such as the impact velocity and energy should not be considered in isolation, as their specific effects are determined by the interaction between the projectile and tissues. Increased tissue damage can result from tumbling of non-deforming rifle bullets and deformation of expanding bullets. Both of these mechanisms increase substantially the energy transfer to the wound and its diameter, also producing a pulsating temporary cavity associated with pressure changes within tissue.
