Publication prototype: A computational publishing and AI assisted writing course unit with students of the Open Knowledge class – at Hochschule Hannover with the Open Science Lab, TIB. The prototype publication exercise involves creating a fictional ‘exhibition catalogue’ drawing on Wikidata based cataloguing of seventeenth century painting deposited by the Bavarian State Painting Collections. The prototype demostrates how computational publishing can be used to bring together different distributed linked open data (LOD) sources. Additionally AI tools are used for assisted essay writing. Then both are encapsulated in a multi-format computational publication — allowing for asynchronous collaborative working. Distributed LOD sources include: Wikidata/base, Nextcloud, Thoth, Semantic Kompakkt, and TIB AV Portal. AI tools used for essay writing are — OpenAI and Perplexity. Eleven students completed the class unit which was carried out over March to April 2023. An open access OER guide to running the class, a template publication for use in the class are online on GitHub and designed for OER reuse. Full class information and resources are on Wikiversity. The open source software used is brought together in the ADA Pipeline.

Der Aufgabenbereich TA4 „Datenpublikation und Langzeitarchivierung” der NFDI4Culture untersucht, welche Initiativen ihre Publikationen für Open Scholarship verbessern. Ziel ist es, Guidelines für Wissenschaftler:innen zu erstellen, um digitale Publikationen samt Forschungsdaten mit Schwerpunkt digitale Langzeitarchivierung zu veröffentlichen. Um ein umfassendes Verständnis der bestehenden Enhanced Publications in der NFDI4Culture Community zu erhalten, wurde eine Online-Umfrage durchgeführt. Ihr Ziel war es, weitere repräsentative Beispiele zu sammeln. Die Umfrage diente auch dazu, ein besseres Verständnis dafür zu erlangen, was die NFDI4Culture Community unter einer Enhanced Publication versteht und welche Merkmale sie damit assoziiert. Task Area 4 of the NFDI4Culture is looking at which initiatives are enhancing their publications for open scholarship. Its aim is to establish a guideline for scholars to create publications and their associated data with a focus on long-term digital preservation. In order to get a full understanding of existing enhanced publications in the NFDI4Culture community an online survey was conducted. Its aim was to gather further representative examples. The survey was also used to get a better understanding of what the NFDI4Culture community considers to be an enhanced publication and what features they associate with it. The survey has shown a variety of examples and contexts which go beyond standard research publications or digital collections. Computational publishing allows executable code, visualisations, and advanced media objects to coexist alongside conventional text in a document. The focus of the project is to access a variety of distributed linked open data sources and media using Jupyter Notebooks stored on a Git repository, and then to render the publication as multi-format, as: web, PDF, eBook, Paged Media CSS, as executables, and as interoperable sources. The remote LOD and media sources are: Wikidata, Wikibase, Fidus Writer, Nextcloud, Semantic Kompakkt, TIB AV Portal, Thoth, and ORCiD. Made with free and open source software. Presentation of the publication 'The Open Science Guide of Guides' for OAT21 Open Science has become an indispensable part of modern science. There are several definitions of "openness" in relation to different aspects of science - the Open Definition sets out principles as follows “Open means anyone can freely access, use, modify, and share for any purpose (subject, at most, to requirements that preserve provenance and openness).” Practical guides for the implementation of those principles in different areas such as research data or publishing are of great importance because they can be used right away. What is X-Sketchbook? It’s a book! It’s an experimental workflow! Released in sections during ‘21, this publication will be a view on the state of the art of experimentation in architectural publishing. The publication will be realised in the context of architectural cultural infrastructural research at TIB for the ‘Consortium for Research Data on Material and Immaterial Cultural Heritage’ (NFDI4Culture).

What is software citation and how should libraries help to support it? This talk for the British Library Digital Scholarship Training Programme's 21st Century Curatorship Talk Series presents the current status of software citation in the researcher and publishing communities. summarising how libraries can build on the available guidance and showcasing existing efforts. It will also give insights into how research libraries can collaborate with research software engineering groups and research computing groups, to provide broader support for Open Research, FAIR research objects, reproducibility, and software preservation.

A perspective on future publishing I am approaching collaborative authoring from the experiences of being the director of a small publishing company. It is these experiences that inform my research of ‘future publishing’. This means caring about the integrity of all parts of a publication and over its complete life and being aware of the hidden labor and skills involved in a publication production. What is important to Open Science now is to take on board that the transformation to ‘semantic/computational publishing’ is not only desirable/inevitable but it is now happening at an accelerated rate. Finally after 80+ years of the universal machine we can start writing again.

Advanced Document Architecture (ADA), a software paper. An interoperable framework for microservices in scholarly publishing to introduce a P2P economy in research publishing for institutional takeback of infrastructures. The motivation behind the ADA software is to enable technological approaches to support research publications and related artifacts in the research cycle to become interoperable and free from restrictions placed on ‘use’ by systems provided by large scholarly publishers. ADA is a publishing microservices framework intended to lower the costs of publishing by automating publishing processes and drastically speed up software development. The technology employed for the ADA microservices are automatic deployment using Kubernetes clusters and content distribution using Apache Kafka data streaming. Microservices are a cornerstone of DevOps in commercial computing, where the FOSS suppliers have come to dominate business IT infrastructure provision, driving out closed source providers on price and innovation. ADA has a mission to support a similar change over in academe, with a vision that institutions use such cost savings to take back service provision and infrastructure in-house. ADA also aims to accelerate P2P networking of the wide array of existing FOSS publishing platforms to disintermediate the publishing market away from existing scholarly publishers who are not in the business of innovation. To support this P2P approach ADA proposes a metering service to allow for the payment for service provision by platforms. The ADA partners are building a working example of the microservice system as a proof-of-concept for community handover as a Kubenetes cluster and cloud deployment on Google Cloud Product (GCP). Example core components would be: services connector; multi-format document transformer; document validator; pipelines; metering and billing of services; and cryptographic IDs. Final Report of the Project "Aufbau eines europäischen Akademienportals", coordinated from October 2015 to June 2017 by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The final report comprises a conceptual exposé for the projected portal, including recommendations for technical and organizational aspects, user and outreach concepts, as well as for sustainability and the planning of estimated resources.

Open infrastructures for publishing Dynamic publishing offers publishers one of the few routes to audience growth and financial sustainability in an age of digital disruption. Dynamic publishing is a digital workflow where the publication processes are automated (layout, multi-format conversion, distribution, rights clearance, translation workflows and payments) and made available on request for reuse, to give access to new audiences and revenues. Currently, the majority of publishers are excluded from the dynamic publishing arena. The software systems on offer are either too expensive on the high-end of the product range or not ‘fit for purpose’ on the low-end. The objective of the Hybrid Publishing Consortium (HPC) is to significantly lower the price of professional digital publishing systems through the creation of open infrastructure for publishing based on free software and open standards. The infrastructure would be supported as a variety of industry partners, open source communities and research groups. HPC’s contribution to this network is to connect the scholarly publishing community with the long standing work on open standards in digital publishing by the industry and the open source community.

A practical guide designed to assist those organising and participating in a citizen science project to get the most out of the experience. The guide will enable you to have the skills to ensure a project is well set up from the start, is able to communicate to its stakeholders and citizens, manage its data and outputs, and overall ensure research benefits. The guide has been compiled by the LIBER Citizen Science Working Group and pulls on the generous contributions of the open science community.
