4. Catalysis and corrosion studies using PGM oxides

Abstract

The dissolution kinetics of metal oxide particles of homogeneous composition follow a simple inverse cubic rate law. In chapter 3 the soft-centre kinetic model is developed which describes the dissolution of a monodispersion of particles, comprising two materials A and B, the former being more corrosion resistant than the latter. The particles are assumed to be richer in A at the surface and richer in B at the core thus leading to two phase dissolution kinetics. In chapter 4 this work is extended to analyse the dissolution kinetics of a range of samples of RuO2.xH2O with different water contents using bromate ions as the oxidant. The soft-centre model is used to analyse the kinetics of dissolution yielding valuable information about the nature of the particles and the process of thermal activation. In addition a study into the kinetics of oxygen catalysis that accompany the corrosion is presented. The kinetics of oxygen catalysis are found to be rapid during the initial region of slowest corrosion and vice versa; a modified version of the soft-centre model is used to simulate the kinetics of catalysis. In chapter 5 the effects of power ultrasound on the kinetics of RuO2.xH2O corrosion by bromate ions are discussed. The ultrasound permanently alters the nature of the particles, giving them increased initial corrosion resistance and a version of the soft centre model is developed to simulate the kinetics. A wide range of new catalysts suitable for mediating the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions are discussed in chapter 6. The catalysts are based on ruthenium and iridium oxides; different preparation methods and the use of inert supports are explored as a route to minimize PGM use. An electrochemical model is used to interpret results of the kinetic study as a function of diffrent experimental parameters.

11. Eustatic sea-level patterns from the Lower Silurian (Llandovery Series) of southern Norway and Estonia

Abstract

This study demonstrates the utility of checking for eustatic sea-level events correlated between passive epicontinental seas and those on the margin of orogenic activity. Bathymetric profiles interpreted on the basis of stratigraphic data from the Lower Silurian (Llandovery Series) in five districts of the Oslo region of southern Norway are compared with similar data derived from five bore-hole sites in the Baltic region of Estonia. These regions preserve extensive marine strata deposited on the Silurian continent Baltica. The data are tested for intra-regional and inter-regional conformity. Despite the fact that the Oslo region was affected by the Caledonide Orogeny, the same four highstands in sea level were recorded there as on Estonia's comparatively stable platform. Expressed in terms of the established geochronologic standard and its faunal zones, coeval highstands in sea level occurred across Baltica during latest Rhuddanian time, in mid-Aeronian time (as marked by the basal Monograptus sedgwickii or Stricklandia lens progressa zones), in early Telychian time (M. turriculatus or S. laevis zones), and in late Telychian time near the Llandovery-Wenlock boundary. This timing corresponds to four highstands in sea level previously documented in North America and to at least three highstands found in South China. Claims for Early Silurian eustasy now rest on data collected from three independent paleocontinents. If the Llandovery Epoch lasted 10 m.y., then sea-level cyclicity was on the order of 2.5 m.y. A combination of tectono-eustastic and glacioeustatic causes probably was responsible for these cycles.

24. Access to urgent dental care: a scoping review.

Abstract

Objective: To summarise the literature on urgent dental care and to identify research priorities on the organisation and delivery of urgent dental services. Basic research design: Scoping review using Andersen's behavioural model of health service utilisation for a framework analysis of the data. Main outcome measures: Gaps in the literature, defined as those factors and interactions identified by Andersen's model as having a contributory role in access to health services that were not evident in the source papers. Results: Fifty-six papers met the inclusion criteria for the review. The factors most often considered were; demographic, socioeconomic, perceived and evaluated need, and health behaviours. Patient outcomes of evaluated health and quality of life following urgent dental care were the least studied variables, with the exception of patient satisfaction. No studies were identified on community values/norms of people accessing urgent dental care, on health economic evaluations or on studies of how urgent dental services mitigate use of other medical services. No studies were identified on urgent need for populations living in water fluoridated areas or on the relationship between service design and efficient or effective access as measured by patient outcomes. Conclusion: Future research on patient outcomes and the comparison of different service models for urgent dental care through measures of equity, effectiveness and efficiency of access are needed to inform future policy and organisation of these services. Abstract

Developments in the field of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite based solar cells have metaphorically opened the door to an exciting new solid state photovoltaic technology that retains the low cost and processability benefits of dye sensitised solar cells (DSCs). Encouraging device efficiencies of greater than 10% on both titania and alumina, and as a planar device, have been reported in the literature. Here we report the characteristics of a series of lead iodide/bromide perovskites. As one might expect, changing the halide(s) alters the crystal structure and band gap of the perovskite which results in the possibility of vivid and colourful solar cells; a characteristic which is seen as one of the main benefits of DSCs. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with elemental mapping via energy dispersive X-ray analysis has been used to characterise perovskites on sensitised thin films. UV-vis and diffuse reflectance has been used to study the optical characteristics of crystallised perovskite thin films. Finally device performance is evaluated and suitability for use in photovoltaic devices is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
