Describes a project to assess the impact of teacher unemployment in the United Kingdom and the United States on teachers' attitudes toward the political system and on perceptions of the political self. Findings indicate that status deprivation results in awareness of political forces and tends to make unemployed individuals somewhat more conservative. (Author/DB)

If the political socialization of young people is not sex specific, it must be asked why women are apolitical. It is suggested that an explanation be sought in women's acute perception of structural constraints which make them decide against active participation in an area designated a "man's world." (RM)
